Some CCTV features explained...
CCTV is a far less expensive consideration than it used to be, as such more people are buying
CCTV for domestic security solutions. But also as technology progresses the features that CCTV
offers get wider and greater. It’s not easy to understand what all these things do, so we’ll try to
cover a few terms here to give you a better understanding.
Nightvision explained
When a camera, or complete system,
mentions nightvision this means the
system is fitted with a lighting system
that is visible to the camera and not to
the human eye. Most nightvision
capable cameras feature an array of
infrared LEDs that are active in the
dark. The camera’s sensor is sensitive
to that light so you see an output that
looks floodlit. Differences between

usually are the number and power of
these LEDs, cameras are usually rated
in terms of how many metres they will
illuminate. Nightvision is a great extra
for your CCTV as it gives you the ability
to view and capture footage in the dark
without the need to light the monitored
area.
DVRs?
A DVR is a very important part of a
CCTV set-up. It’s simply an acronym for
Digital Video Recorder. It processes
and converts one or more CCTV
signals into a digital format and stores
it onto a digital storage medium most
commonly an internal hard drive,
external USB storage or flash/SD
memory. The DVR is a modern
replacement for the video recorder part
of a CCTV setup. They usually perform
other functions too, such as the ability
to backup/store the footage or even to
access the footage while you are not
near the system.
If you have one, the DVR is at the
centre of your system and is your point
of control over the whole system.
Smartphone access to CCTV
Most DVRs available today often
contain the ability to view the footage
remotely on your smartphone and with
some you can actually control the
system. Once you’re set up with your
CCTV this can be done very simply via
a free App for your particular type of
smartphone.
Depending on the type of features your
system offers you will be able to do a
range of things. View live footage,
review recent recordings, move the
cameras and more. This is quite a
recent innovation in the CCTV
marketplace and different kits can
have some quite big differences in
features. Check them and make sure
you are getting the best one for you.
