Exhibition: American Indian Dress: Illustrations by Oscar Howe<br />

“American Indian Dress” was co-curated by M.F.A. candidates<br />

Michelle St. Vrain and Nicole Geary and features illustrations created<br />

by Oscar Howe in 1948 for the publication “American Indian Dress”<br />

(1956). <strong>The</strong> illustrations reflect Oscar Howe’s early career as a commercial<br />

artist as well as his training at the Santa Fe Indian School<br />

(1935-1938). To make a special appointment or for a special docent<br />

Exhibition: Laleh Mehran: How to Catch a Moth’s Shadow<br />

Site-Specific installation artist Laleh Mehran will exhibit “How to<br />

Catch a Moth’s Shadow” in the John A. Day Gallery. Mehran’s<br />

unique upbringing, influenced by a combination <strong>of</strong> scientific, theological,<br />

and political concepts, informs her creative process. <strong>The</strong> installations<br />

she produces are interactive, <strong>of</strong>ten including performative pieces,<br />

where viewers can help direct the expansion <strong>of</strong> the installation.<br />

Exhibition: Elements <strong>of</strong> Memory<br />

Nicole Geary, a graduate student at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong>,<br />

will present an exhibition entitled, “Elements <strong>of</strong> Memory.” <strong>The</strong> show<br />

will feature work that investigates relationships between the artist's<br />

body and the effects <strong>of</strong> place upon memory.<br />

Music Concert: <strong>The</strong> SOUND <strong>of</strong> USD’s Year End Spectacular<br />

USD’s amazing marching band, <strong>The</strong> SOUND OF USD, presents their<br />

SPECTACULAR concert, open to the public at no charge.<br />

Peter Schultz is Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Art History and Department Chair<br />

at Concordia College. He is the co-editor <strong>of</strong> Aspects <strong>of</strong> Ancient Greek<br />

Culture: Ritual, Context, Iconography and the author <strong>of</strong> several articles on<br />

Athenian sculpture. He will be presenting two lectures at USD. <strong>The</strong> first<br />

will be Monday, November 26 at 7:30 pm in Farber Hall and the second<br />

will be Tuesday, November 27 at 2 pm in the CFA room 172.<br />

Music Concert: <strong>South</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong> Brass Quintet presents Music From Around<br />

the World<br />

<strong>The</strong> USD Department <strong>of</strong> Music presents the <strong>South</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong> Brass Quintet:<br />

Music From Around the World, open to the public at no charge. <strong>The</strong><br />

SDBQ is made up <strong>of</strong> USD music faculty Rolf Olson, trumpet; Gary<br />

Reeves, horn; Jonathan Alvis, trombone; and Chuck Dibley, tuba. Clayton<br />

Lehmann, USD history faculty joins music faculty on trumpet.<br />

<strong>The</strong>atre: Brigadoon—lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner—music by Frederick Loewe<br />

When two American tourists stumble upon Brigadoon, a fantastical Scottish<br />

town that disappears into the Highland mist and returns for only one<br />

day every one hundred years, they discover an idyllic world (and love)<br />

hidden from the ordinary traveler. High-spirited folk dancing and musical<br />

theatre standards like “Waitin’ for My Dearie” and “Almost Like Being in<br />

Exhibition: Picturing Native: photographs from Edward Curtis, Horace<br />

Poolaw and Zig Jackson<br />

Picturing Native features the relationship between the photographic medium<br />

and the portrayal <strong>of</strong> the American Indian subjects in the past 100<br />

years. <strong>The</strong> exhibition will feature photogravures by Edward Curtis. <strong>The</strong>se<br />

photogravures, created in the early 20th century, are housed in the <strong>University</strong><br />

Libraries Special Collections at USD. In addition to Curtis’s photogravures,<br />

the exhibition will feature work by Kiowa photographer, Horace<br />

Poolaw, and the contemporary photography <strong>of</strong> Zig Jackson.<br />
