NEW ORDERS
Achieved 6 Trillion Won In New Orders
Samsung Engineering won approximately 6 trillion won in new orders during
2008 thanks to aggressive overseas business development and marketing
leveraging that helped distinguish its competitive edge. The Hydrocarbon
Plant Division won a number of mega contracts domestically and overseas
including the BAPCO Lube Oil Project (Bahrain), ONGC Ethylene Project
(India), S-Oil Aromatics Plant Project (Korea), and CFE LNG Terminal Project
(Mexico). The Industrial Plant Division won the SAIL IISCO Project (India) and
the Environmental & Infrastructure Plant Division won the National Army
Corps Relocation Project and Yongsan Train Depot Relocation Project.
NEW MARKETS, NEW CLIENTS, NEW BUSINESSES
Diversification of markets, clients and businesses
In 2008, Samsung Engineering succeeded in broadening its markets and
clients and diversifying its business. It became the first Korean engineering
firm to enter the Bahrain market by winning the BAPCO refinery plant
contract, widening its geographical market. Also, Samsung Engineering won
the IISCO contract in India and with it acquired the foundation needed to
develop steel plant engineering and construction as one of the company’s
core business fields. In addition, the IISCO contract helped Samsung
Engineering expand its presence in steel plant markets throughout the
Middle Eastern region, in countries like Bahrain and UAE. Following its
success of adding ARAMCO, BOROUGE, HCSEZ and INTEL to its client base in
2007, Samsung Engineering has solidified relationships with many state-oil
companies and government organizations in 2008 and they include
ONGC(India), PDVSA(Venezuela), BAPCO(Venezuela), and CFE(Mexico).
Success was also achieved by winning a new type of business contract for the
LNG Terminal project in Mexico. This project is especially significant in that it
marks the first lump-sum turnkey EPC contract for a Korean company to
deliver a LNG terminal overseas.
HYDROCARBON PLANTS
With extensive project experience and outstanding project execution capabilities, Samsung
Engineering will emerge as a global leader in the Hydrocarbon plant sector.
Samsung Engineering has developed its expertise in the petrochemical plant, oil refinery and gas plant industries, after playing a key
role in the advancement of the national heavy chemical industry. In the 1990s Samsung Engineering actively began exploring and
executing major EPC projects in overseas markets such as the Middle East, India, Southeast Asia and Latin America, establishing a
strong reputation in the global EPC plant market. The company aims to maintain its expertise and competitiveness in the
petrochemical sector (such as ethylene, gas processing, EG and refining) while striving to expand its services in new business fields
such as LNG and FPSO. Samsung Engineering will continue to grow as a leader in the global hydrocarbon plant market.
Petrochemical
Since the 1970s, Samsung Engineering has been an active player in the petrochemical industry. The
company has been involved in major domestic petrochemical complex projects in Ulsan, Yeocheon and
Daesan and has successfully delivered core plants for Samsung Petrochemical and other major Korean
firms. Using these experiences as a strong foundation, from the early 1990's Samsung Engineering has
successfully executed lump sum turn-key projects that include engineering, procurement, construction
and commissioning and has expanded and penetrated into overseas petrochemical plant markets such
as China, Thailand, Egypt, India, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Iran. In 2008, Samsung Engineering was
recognized for its business performance in Saudi Arabia by successfully carrying out five large-scale
projects including the APPC PDH/PP, TASNEE Ethylene, SHARQ EG, IBN ZAHR PP and OCT plants. In
addition, the company succeeded in winning the largest ethylene plant contract in India from the Indian
state oil corporation, ONGC. The current focus for the company is to expand deeper into the GCC, CIS,
Australia, Latin America and North Africa.
Refinery
Samsung Engineering has accumulated extensive refinery experience across the globe by successfully
completing the IOCL Refinery Plant in India, BST Unleaded Gasoline Additive Plant in Thailand, Tula and
Salamanca refinery plants for PEMEX in Mexico, building a continuing partnership with the clients.
Currently, Samsung Engineering is constructing the PEMEX Minatitlan Refinery Plant in Mexico,
PETROTRIN NHT & CCR Platformer Refinery Plant in Trinidad & Tobago and SAUDI ARAMCO DHT plant
in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In 2008, the company won a Lube Oil plant contract from BAPCO in
Bahrain, laying the groundwork to expand into the whole MENA (Middle East & North Africa) countries.
In the same year the company succeeded in getting the S-OIL Aromatics plant contract in Korea.
Success continued in 2009 with the Skikda refinery project from SONATRACH in Algeria and the
Aromatics plant project and Delayed coker plant project from SATORP in Saudi Arabia. Samsung
Engineering plans to specialize in the refinery business by securing clean energy refining capabilities
and by penetrating into offshore businesses such as FPSO.
Gas / LNG
Gas plants are Samsung Engineering’s sustained activities in the hydrocarbon sector and Samsung
Engineering has built project track records in Asia, mainly in Thailand, Vietnam and India. In Thailand, a
gas separation plant was successfully delivered to PTT, while accumulating technological knowhow and
strengthening its competitiveness in the overseas gas plant industry. Other notable gas plant projects
include the IPCL Gas Plant in India, KHALDA Gas Plant in Egypt and Petrovietnam Gas Plant in Vietnam.
Also it successfully completed the TTM GSP-1 Gas Plant and PTT GSP-5 Plant in Thailand, proving its
technological strength across the world. Currently the PTT Ethane Separation Plant and GSP-6 Plant are
underway in Thailand. In 2008, Samsung Engineering not only successfully entered new product business
with the awarding of LNG terminal contract from Mexico's power agency, CFE but also became the first
Korean company to provide EPC turnkey service for an overseas LNG terminal. The company plans to
develop the LNG business and further expand its opportunities in Southeast Asia and Latin America.
Fertilizers & Chemicals
Samsung Engineering has enjoyed success not only in petrochemicals, refineries, and gas processing
plant projects, but also in fertilizer projects, like Vietnam’s Phu My Fertilizer plant project as well as
general and fine chemical plant projects at home and abroad.
