The absorbent inner layer of the diaper is referred to as the soaker. 

Diaper Covers 

The he outer liner that goes over an absorbent inner layer (soaker). Diaper covers are usually waterproof, however they 

can be made of wool or polar fleece, which are water resistant, not waterproof. Some diapers have the cover built built-in built or 

securely attached to the inner liner with snaps, while others are completely separ separate. ate. Diaper covers are usually 

fastened with snaps or Velcro. 

Doublers 

Doublers are thick pads that can be inserted between your baby's bottom and the diaper to provide extra absorbency. 

These are great for heavy wetters or for night night-time use. 

Liners 

Liners are thin material used between a baby's bottom and the diaper itself. Most liners are used to keep stool away 

from diapers for easy clean up. Flushable biodegradable liners are the most popular. Polar fleece liners are also 

available. They help to wick moisture away and keep the baby's bottom dry. 

Snappi 

A plastic fastener used instead of a pin to keep the fabric inner layer together together.

Alternatively, some diapers come in a variety of sizes, such as small, medium, and large. One One-size size diapers are usually us a

Prefolds 

Prefold diapers are a variation of the traditional flat diaper. They are a rectangular fabric square that has more layers in 

the middle and fewer layers at the sides. You (“pre”) fold the rectangle to fit the size, gender, and elimination habits of 

your child. You then place a waterproof outer cover over top. Some covers require a separate closure to hold them on, 

others use Velcro or snaps sewn in to the cover. 

Prefold diapers are versatile, absorbent, long lasting, easy to clean, and quick to dry. Prefold diapers can also be used as 

doublers and pocket stuffers in other diapering systems (see Doublers and Pocket Diaper sections). 

Prefolds are the least expensive choice in cloth diapers. 

Advantages of Prefold Diapers 

• Very absorbent 

• Very economical 

• Easy to launder and fast to dry 

• Can be washed at high temperatures, separate from covers 

• Can be used as diapers, doublers, pocket stuffers, burp cloths, or even cleaning rags 

• Can be embroidered very easily 

• Customizable fit on any baby, just by folding 

Disadvantages of Prefold Diapers 

• A cover is required to make the diaper function 

• Must take the time to fold 

• Not as convenient to put on as other styles 

• Harder to use on squirmy babies 

• Pins and/or a Snappi can be hard to use 

• Runny messes are harder to contain with these diapers

All-in-Ones (AIO) 

All-in-Ones (AIO) are fitted diapers that have the absorbent inner layer and waterproof outer layer sewn together. 

There are no additional covers or fasteners. 

AIOs are very convenient in that you don’t need to put diapers together in advance, search for covers, or struggle with 

putting multiple layers on a squirmy baby. Everything you need is all in one place. They’re great for grandparents who 

aren’t familiar with the other multiple-part systems and save space when traveling. However, they aren’t very practical 

for daily use since frequent washing and drying reduces the effectiveness of the waterproof outer layer and they can 

take longer to dry. 

Advantages of AIO Cloth Diapers 

• Functions like a disposable, except you don't throw it away!

All-in-Twos (AI2) 

In All-in-Twos the absorbent inner layer and waterproof outer layer are separate, however you attach them together to 

make a single diaper before putting the diaper on the baby (as opposed to other styles where the cover is applied after 

the absorbent is put on the baby). 

AI2s have the convenience of AIOs in that they are simple to put on, but they don’t have the longer drying and cleaning 

times of AIOs. You can also often replace only the inner soaker layer in a diaper change and reuse the outer cover, 

extending the life of the cover with less frequent washing. 

Advantages of AI2 Cloth Diapers 

• No separate cover required 

• Great for transitioning from disposables to cloth - easy to use 


• You can always get a new soaker or doubler if the original needs to be replaced 

• Some can be used as a Hybrid system 

Disadvantages of AI2 Cloth Diapers 

• Keeping soakers or doublers together with the rest of the diaper 

• Usually more expensive than other cloth diapering methods

Hybrid 

Hybrid diapers combine the convenience of disposable diapers with some of the re-usable nature of cloth diapers. A 

Hybrid diapering system is an All-in-Two reusable cover with a disposable rather than cloth inner liner. Depending on 

the brand, the inner layer can be thrown out, flushed, or composted in your backyard composter. 

Hybrids are a more environmentally-conscious solution for people who do not want to cloth diaper. They cut down on 

the amount of plastic being sent to the landfill, as the outer reusable cover replaces the plastic outer found in a regular 

disposable diaper. Hybrid diaper inners often have unbleached wood pulp liners, so they reduce baby’s exposure to 

chemicals found in traditional disposable diapers, and reduce the amount of chemicals put in to the environment. 

Many people use a combination of All-in-Twos and disposable inserts, generally using the cloth inners at home and the 

disposable inners when out of the house. 

Advantages of Hybrid Diapers 

• More environmentally-friendly solution than disposable diapers 

• Unbleached liners against baby’s skin 

• Don’t need to haul wet or dirty cloth diapers around when you’re away from home 

• Less laundry (only occasionally washing waterproof covers) 

• Can flush some brands, avoiding stinky diapers sitting around 

Disadvantages of Hybrid Diapers 

• Diaper liners create environmental impacts from manufacturing 

• If you throw away the liners, you're still adding to the landfill, though without the plastics this creates less waste 

• Absorbent gel used in disposable inners – some health concerns and composting concerns 

• Flushing inners can result in clogged toilet 

• Usually have to tear inner apart before flushing to avoid clogging 

• More expensive than other diapering options

Fitted Cloth Diapers 

Fitted cloth diapers are made to fit the shape of the baby. They are not waterproof by themselves and a diaper cover 

must be put on over top. They usually have elastic gatherings in the legs and waist that help to contain the contents of 

the diaper. They also have snaps or Velcro closures to keep them in place, making the cover easier to put on than with 

a prefold. 

Advantages of Fitted Diapers

Pocket Diapers 

Most pocket diapers have a waterproof out layer with an opening (pocket) on the inside that allows for the insertion of 

an absorbent inner layer (stuffer). Traditionally the stuffer is a separate piece (or pieces) of fabric, however some 

pocket diapers now have the stuffer attached to the outer. Some pocket diapers are a three-piece system with a nonwaterproof 

outer layer, requiring the use of a diaper cover. 

Pocket diapers similar to AI2s in that they are convenient to put on and easy to clean and dry. 

Advantages of Pocket Diapers 

• You decide what to "stuff" the pocket with...so you can find the right absorbency level 

• Easy to clean because they "come apart" 

• Can be very trim if absorbent stuffing is not bulky 


Disadvantages of Pocket Diapers 

• A separate stuffer is required to make the diaper function 

• Can be bulky if to much stuffing is inserted
