Game Show Come on down! The survey says ... ! Pass! That’s my final answer! We have all grown up playing fun, challenging board games as well as watching entertaining game shows on television. The competitive spirit that makes us want to give the right price, make it to the bonus round, send our opponents backward and win the big prize can now come alive in your German classroom! Let’s see what you’ve just won! Your students have been working hard in your German classes. A great way to reinforce their study of vocabulary, grammar and culture is to put these materials into game formats. Students love to take a break from the routine by playing games. Using formats of popular game shows and board games they grew up with will excite them even more! German teachers are some of the most creative teachers in the world; we are continually searching for effective ways to help students learn new materials. To reinforce this learning, we spend countless hours planning and preparing review games. Let me take some of the work out of creating those games! Let’s see what’s behind the curtain! This book is a compilation of the most popular game shows and board games of all time. With each game, I provide a complete set of instructions to help teachers and students prepare. These instructions are fairly detailed, and some may feel like I’ve written a lot. I would rather have teachers understand all aspects of the game than to be left wondering how to play each one. We’ve all been to a great conference and experienced some new activity that we want to bring back to our classroom; it sounds great at the time, but when we later try to prepare it, we forget how all the details work, and the handout is not that thorough. Zonk! Some games in this book are relatively easy to prepare and play while others will require more of your time. Many of the games require teachers to provide their own set of review questions. This may work well at the end of a unit, chapter or even in preparing for semester or final exams. I do provide some examples in the book, but it’s important that each teacher tailor a set of review questions to his or her specific content; a set of generic review questions from me would simply not work for all German classes. Game over! Teachers must decide how and when to use each competition. Some games are only suitable for your lower-level classes (German I or II), but most can be adapted through advanced content to work with your upper-level German classes as well. Let your students help prepare the games! A great review for your German III and IV students will be to work on games for your lower-level classes. (They may get as much out of the review as other students get from playing the game!) Remember, the time and energy you invest into getting ready for each game will be lessened every time you play it in your classes. Make these games your own! Every teacher will want to adapt to meet his or her own needs. Feel free to change, alter or manipulate any aspect of these games; a book is only as good as it is useful. As you look through this book, some of these game shows and board games have been easily adapted to the classroom and can be played much like what you and your students are used to; others have been creatively adapted to work for an entire class. No whammies! So ... get ready, get set ... it’s time to roll the dice, spin the wheel, make a guess, devise a strategy, answer a question and have the time of your lives in German class! If you play your cards right, your students will be rushing to your class to playgames and learn more German! Spielen wir! 1
