Tucson, AZ you
properties are very similar with only slight differences. Of course,
each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Some properties
include all utilities in the rent. Some do not. Some are luxurious
(one even has a real mini movie theater). Some are miles away.
Some are just steps away from the campus. Some rent to students
only. Some will rent to anyone. Some are for students on a budget
and offer no amenities. And some are similar to resorts in the range
of amenities they offer…you get the idea. But Sahara Apartments
stands alone by advertising a “No Party” Policy.
Sahara Apartments, located less than one mile west of the UofA
campus on N. Stone Avenue, has had a “No Party” Policy in place

parties, no accidents, no drunken or drug-related injuries, and no Red
Tags given by the police. Red Tags are given to properties when the
police are called for disturbances or illegal activity. Yes, not a single

“Yes, some people view our ‘No Party’ Policy as a negative and
frankly, some students choose not to live here because of the policy,”
says Ted Mehr, owner and developer of Sahara Apartments. “ We
look at Sahara Apartments as a sanctuary for students where they
can feel safe, secure and free from the usual commotion that goes
on in most student oriented apartment buildings. The kinds of
things that can disturb a student’s sleep or study time. As a studentonly
property, we do not consider ourselves to be in the nightclub
business, or the bar and entertainment business. There are plenty
of choices for those activities all around Tucson. We are a student’s
home away from home.”
Sahara Apartments sponsors social events on a monthly basis.
These social activities are held both on and offsite. When they are
offsite, Sahara’s shuttle provides free transportation to the events and
brings the residents back. Residents can have their friends over and
socialize with them in the student lounge, entertain them
Rare Student Property With a
“No Party” Policy
Of all the selling points to publicize, one student property
advertises a “quiet environment” and a “No Party” Policy.
in the game room, use the swimming and whirlpools, or study
together in Sahara’s study room with free use of the Internet
connected terminals.
“Safety is the number one thing parents are concerned about when
their child moves away from home,” says Ted Mehr. “The concept
of Sahara was born out of my concern for my own daughter’s safety
as she was preparing for college. I wanted her to be in a safe and
comfortable living environment no matter where she lived. I simply
asked myself, what kind of place would I want my daughter to
live in for the times I could not be there to watch over her? Sahara
Apartments was my answer to that question.”
The concern for safety and security is evident as you approach the
entry gate, or when you step into the

safety and security measures that are
unmatched by any building Tucson.
The gated property includes an
electronic key system with retrievable
history of every entry into each
apartment and through each gate. The
property is equipped with 80 security
cameras that monitor all public areas
on a 24/7 basis. There is even a network of infrared beams over the
perimeter walls that sound an alarm and calls the owner on his cell
phone if the perimeter walls are breached…regardless of the time
of day or night. “If someone breaches the security of the building,

am sure you would want it for yours. It may be considered overly
protective, but I would prefer to wake up and investigate in the

happened that could have been prevented,” admits Ted Mehr.
What else needs to be said about Sahara Apartments? They have
a good long list of modern amenities that the students want, such
as ALL utilities included in the rent, VERY high-speed Internet,
kitchens and private bathrooms in each apartment, FREE shuttle
service to and from campus, FREE bicycles for use as long as you
are a resident, lower prices than the on-campus residence halls and
comparable off campus student apartments, and you might have
guessed…Sahara Apartments is the one property with the minimovie
theater. Check out Sahara’s Website for all the
information about this unique student property at www.
SaharaApartments.com or stop in and take a tour. The
friendly staff at Sahara Apartments would be happy to
show you around.
Spring semester on campus at the University of Arizona is a time fi lled
with excitement and anticipation! Students, faculty and staff look forward
to traditions like Wildcat Softball and Baseball games and Spring Fling –
Commencement!
One of the best parts of my job is the wonderful opportunity I have to
communicate with many parents about their student. It is great that so many
parents are turning to the Parents & Family Association (PFA) to fi nd answers
to questions and for resources which help their student to be successful here
at UA. Parents, please let us know if you change your physical address and/or
email address so that we can update your records. We want to make sure that
you continue to receive Paw Prints, our E-Newsletter and that we can reach
you via email in case of a campus emergency.
If you are looking for ways to get more involved and connected to campus
– PFA can help you – we love our parent volunteers! Be sure to bookmark our
website: www.uafamily.arizona.edu. It is an excellent source of information
and support!
I want to express my thanks to all the wonderful parent volunteers who
have served the association over the past year – I really appreciate your
dedication and support – and so do our students!
As always, don’t hesitate to give the Parents & Family Association a call or
send us an email if you have a question or concern. Barbara Camp and I are
happy to be of assistance. We can be reached at (520) 621-0884 or via email at
What is your partnership?
Parents Making a Diff erence
Dick and Mary Roney ’81 are among
the many University of Arizona parents
working to sustain and enhance the UA
experience. For over a year and a half, the
Roneys have been Parents Plus Members
and active supporters of the Parents &
Family Association. Th eir eff orts play an
integral part in its success.
“Parents are the keystone to the success
of the Parents & Family Association,”
says Mary Roney. “Th e PFA is a great
network to meet other parents in the UA
community and is the tie that binds us
together to support the most important
needs of our students on campus.”
“I felt so comfortable knowing the
community was there for the whole family,”
Mary said. “It is hard to send your
children away to college, but satisfying to
know that as a result of the parental support
from the PFA, your child’s needs are
fi rst and foremost. Th e PFA gives all students
opportunities and families comfort
knowing there is a support system.”
Th e Roneys faced the emotional and
diffi cult task of sending their children off
to college. Th eir eldest daughter Chelsea
is a junior majoring in Deaf Science at the
UA while their youngest MK is a freshman
at John Hopkins University.
Dick and Mary Roney support the
Parents & Family Association because of
its infl uence on student activities involving
safety, health and education support.
Being involved with their children’s
education has been part of their lives for
many years. Th ey have instilled into their
daughters the value of giving back to the
community through volunteerism.
“Our main enjoyment is knowing
that we are making a diff erence for our
students,” Mary said.
Coach Sean Mil
By Kevin Wittner
Sean Miller
thought he had seen
it all. Arizona’s fi rstyear
men’s basketball
coach was a player
in the Big East for
Pittsburgh, an assistant
coach with
stops in the Big Ten
at Wisconsin and
in the ACC at N.C.
State. He was then
a head coach in the
Atlantic 10 at Xavier.
However, he needed
to come to Tucson to
experience one more
thing.
It was not until
Miller took the reins
of the Arizona men’s
basketball program
that he saw the power
of ZonaZoo, Ari-
Sean Miller, UA men’s
basketball head coach
Arizona Athletics –
J and L Photography
zona’s spirited student section. At 12,000
members strong, ZonaZoo stretches end
zone-to-end zone at home football games
and fi lls nearly 4,000 seats at UA basketball
games.
“I look at our student section as the
best in the country,” Miller said. “Th ere is
no student section that impacts an arena
more than ZonaZoo impacts McKale
Center.”
Miller recognizes that a home basketball
game means more than just a win or
loss in the standings for his team, but it
also serves as a gathering for the University
community and marks milestones
in students’ lives over the course of their
college careers.
“You identify your time as a student at
a university as what happened in that four
or fi ve-year window, and oftentimes sports
are a big a big part of that experience,”
Miller said. “Did the football team go to
a bowl? How did your team do in rivalry
games? You think of the fun weekends
and nights are associated with teams and
sports. “
“You want to create a culture where it’s
(the students’) team, and we’re in this together
to compete for a Pac-10 championship,
to be a part of the NCAA Tournament
and to advance deep into the tournament,”
ler and ZonaZoo: A Winning
Combination
Miller continued. “Students want to talk
about that legacy and remember the great
time they had while they were here. For
example, if you were a student here in the
late 1990s, you will forever remember the
NCAA title.”
Th is is not to say that Miller and the
Wildcats do not need the fans in this
symbiotic relationship. He appealed to UA
fans prior to the season, saying that his
inexperienced team with only one senior
on the roster would need support more
than any other team ever to play in McKale.
He later went out of his way to thank
ZonaZoo in his post-game press conference
following UA’s early-season victory
over Rice and contends that the student
section was critical in the Wildcats’ Pac-10
win over Cal.
“We want our fans to be hostile, and
I mean that in a good way,” Miller said,
noting that sportsmanship is of the utmost
importance. “Th e louder it gets in the
arena, it creates a sense that today or
tonight is going to be hard ( for a visiting
team), and they’re going to have to be at
their very best to beat us.”
ZonaZoo fi lls McKale Center with nearly 4000 spirited students for each men’s home
basketball game. Arizona Athletics – J and L Photography
Th at’s where Conner Comp and 12,000
of his closest friends come in.
Comp is ZonaZoo’s executive director,
overseeing the largest student-run
organization in the Pac-10. It is Comp
and 35 ZonaZoo crew members, who are
broken into fi ve branches – community
development, campus outreach, market-
ing, programming and media/communications
– who organize everything from pep
rallies and online video newscasts to blood
drives and Big Brother-type outreach with
local youth.
In talking with Comp, a sophomore
he is more enamored with Miller or what
ZonaZoo is doing away from the basketball
arena.
When it comes to Miller, Comp is
grateful both for the support and enthusiasm
the new Wildcat coach has lent to
ZonaZoo.
“(Miller) is doing an absolutely incredible
job,” Comp said. “He’s thinking of the
big picture, and the students absolutely
love him.”
Comp recalls when Miller held “cheer
practice” with ZonaZoo prior to the
season, teaching the Wildcat faithful new
chants to rattle opponents. Not only did
Miller bring his team out to simulate a
game for the fans, but he also purchased
pizza for everyone in attendance. As
Comp says, “(Miller) was trying to implement
what he’s learned and taking ZonaZoo
to the next level.”
But Miller’s support hasn’t ended
there. He has attended the pep rallies and
appeared on ZonaZoo TV – which can
be seen on YouTube, among other online
sites.
“He’s worked with us, and I can’t say
how great of a job he’s doing,” Comp said.
“Th e students are very, very excited to have
him, and I look forward to working with
him more.”
As energetic as Comp is in discussing
Miller and ZonaZoo’s impact at sporting
events, he makes it clear that the organization
goes beyond cheering on the Wildcats
at games.
In addition to “beating” ASU in a blood
drive earlier this year, during which ZonaZoo
members donated more pints than
their Sun Devil counterparts, ZonaZoo
hosts a program called Junior Cats, which
is a mentorship program with middle
school and high school students in Tucson.
“It’s probably my favorite thing,” Comp
said. “Th e kids don’t know anything about
college and don’t know what they’re going
to do when they get out of school.”
Th e events, which are held three times
a year and typically draw around 60 students,
involve a campus and stadium tour,
a lecture on the importance of a college
education and an athletic event.
“We try to show them all the cool
things you get to do if you go to college,”
Comp said. “It’s important that we get
these kids feeling positive about college. A
lot of their teachers say the parents don’t
have college educations, and they just
don’t think about going there.”
As for the students who do make it to
college and join ZonaZoo, Comp says his
group’s objective is simple.
“Our goal with ZonaZoo is to provide
students with the ultimate college experience
but we also want to have an impact
on the University and on Tucson,” Comp
said.
Miller, a father of three young boys, has
his own future Wildcats who have taken
note of not only their father’s team but
also the energy brought to the arena by the
current students.
“Th ey love it,” Miller says of his children.
“Obviously, they recognize that it
is an incredible environment and that
draws them back to more games. It’s the
experience of the whole game; the band,
the crowd, standing at beginning of game.
Th e pageantry that goes along with that
and the incredible students makes for an
awesome environment. Th ey can’t help but
think that one day they will be drawn to attend
the University of Arizona as students.”
With any luck, the Miller boys will be
cheering on their father’s Wildcats along
with the rest of the best student section in
the country.
promotional plan for the Honda Insight,
a hybrid electric vehicle, beating out 20
other schools nationwide.
Th e UA team was one of three fi nalists
– including Georgia State University and
California State University, Fullerton
– to present to a panel of judges from
American Honda Motor Company and ad
Los Angeles, culminating a semester-long
project sponsored by EdVenture Partners.
“Th e students knocked it out of the
faculty adviser. “Th ey did a phenomenal
job of representing the marketing
department and the UA.”
Five students from Ackerley’s
MKTG 425 Advertising
Management class –
marketing seniors Todd
Lane, Shiloh Miller, Chelsea
Robinson, Brandon
present the results of their
promotional campaign,
which they developed
and executed over the fall
semester with a $2,500
budget.
“Th e class takes a case
with a director and divisions including
operations, public relations, creative,
marketing and fi nance. “It’s completely
self-directed,” Ackerley explained. “I
started each class with
a brief lecture and then
turned it over to Evan
Singer, the agency’s
Th is was the fi rst year
Th is year’s UA team
on-campus promotional eff orts around
UA Homecoming weekend. “Each school
was given a new 2010 Honda Insight for
the designated event date,” says Singer.
“We want to do the extraordinary, so
we negotiated with Dobbs Honda and
Chapman Honda to get two more Honda
Insights for our event.” Th ey used the
cars to create what Ackerley called a
“promotion with commotion,” which
included the UA mascot, Wilbur, the UA
marching band, games, giveaways and
more.
Th e team also developed a Facebook
contest in which students were challenged
to come up with a phrase using movie
titles and no more than 140 characters
to explain why the Insight is “cool.” Th e
winner was awarded $100. In all, Ackerley
said, the students wrung an estimated
$28,000 in value out of their $2,500 budget.
“Th is program allows students to work
on a project with real clients, real goals,
real budgets and real outcomes,” Ackerley
said. “Evan really summed it up best at the
competition when he told the judges that
the experience is one that the students will
never forget.”
Th e win included a $5,000 prize from
American Honda that will fund student
activities in the UA marketing department.

Parents’ Corner
A New
Phase of Life
Approaches
By Pam Obando, Associate Director,
Communication and Outreach, Residence Life
Th e next few months will fl y by—from
celebrating high school graduation to moving
your student into their new home on
campus. As a parent, you are embarking on
a new role in your student’s life. Letting go
is not easy after 18 years but students need
to become more independent and fi gure
things out on their own. Listen, guide and
affi rm them as they make decisions instead
of trying to solve their problems. Trust the
values you’ve instilled in them throughout
the years. Today’s students consider their
parents to be their best advisers—you’ve
earned their trust.
Discuss the Basics
As you and your student prepare for the
big move to college, make sure and sort
through some of the necessary basics of
daily living:
▷ Good health: discuss sleep habits;
healthy eating—check out UA Meal
Plans; prepare a fi rst aid kit, review
and fi ll prescriptions; check exercise
options at the Student Recreation
Center
▷ Good fi nances: set up a campus bank
account and review balancing a checkbook;
discuss managing credit cards
and bills; agree on what bills you are
covering and what they are expected to
pay; explore the benefi ts of a campus
job
▷ Time management: less class time
but many more hours of studying;
meeting deadlines; the consequences
of not managing time eff ectively
▷ Th e nitty-gritty: doing laundry, ironing,
food shopping, microwaving, room
organization and cleaning
▷ Sharing space: it is a new experience
Know Campus Resources
Residence Life provides great resources
to your student and you—live-in Community
Directors, Resident Assistants, Desk
Assistants, and excellent maintenance
and custodial staff at each hall. Th e staff
is focused on helping your student have
a successful fi rst-year experience—academically,
socially, emotionally. Th ey will
help your student become acquainted with
their hall-mates and the many resources
and opportunities on campus.
During Summer Orientation you and
your student will learn about meal plans,
campus safety, leadership opportunities,
tutoring , academic workshops, living with
a roommate, getting to know professors in
and out of the classroom, campus health
services—and much more. Parents, consider
the Parents & Family Association to
be your one-stop place to become familiar
with campus resources. It makes a diff erence
when your student calls feeling overwhelmed
and you can direct them to the
right contacts. A student’s initial excitement
about college life often transitions
into frustration and homesickness after
a few weeks. If they talk about struggling
in a class, encourage her/him to see her/
his professor, seek tutoring (available in
their residence hall and at Th e Th ink Tank)
or form a study group with classmates.
If s/he report missing friends and family
members, encourage them to get involved
in their Residence Hall Council, join a
student club, or invite a hall-mate to meet
for dinner. Getting involved on campus
will make a huge diff erence to their sense
of belonging at the University.
As you and your student transition
through these college years, you’ll discover
your student has become an independent,
mature adult—and one of your best
friends—enjoy the journey!
Congratulations on your student’s admission
to Th e University of Arizona! And
Congratulations to you for the time, love
this far! You have done a great job.
You and your student have already begun
the important transition from being part
of a high school community to that of a
university community. Remember that
transitioning is a process that does not
happen overnight, although sometimes it
might feel that way the closer to August
you get. Some students might be eager
to get to college and get started, while
other students might need a little more
encouragement that they are going to be
fi ne while away at college. Either way, the
New Student Orientation program is busy
preparing to provide your student with an
orientation session that will assist with
this transition and provide the resources
to be successful students while attending
Math Placement: Using the Online Test
By Tina Schuster
Each major at the UA has a specifi c
math requirement. To register for a math
course at the UA, students must satisfy the
eligibility requirements for that course.
High school curriculum and math SAT or
ACT scores are not used to place students
into UA math courses. Instead, students
must take the ALEKS online placement
test. All incoming freshmen must take
the ALEKS online placement test at least
one week prior to orientation. Students
with AP or other college level math credit
should still test, and then talk to a math
advisor at orientation.
Th e UA Math Placement Test will
be available beginning May 1, 2010
through August 22, 2010. Additional
information will be available through
the math placement website at
http://math.arizona.edu/placement and
in the Online Academic Tour at http://
www.em.arizona.edu/owa. For students
participating in Freshman Orientation,
there is no charge for the fi rst test, if taken
by August 22, 2010.
Students need to complete the following
steps:
1. Take the UA Math Placement test at
least one week prior to your orientation
date. Make sure you have at least 2 hours
to dedicate to testing. You will need your
UA NetID and password. Students test
beginning May 1, 2010. All students are
expected to adhere to the UA Code of
at orientation!
Academic Integrity while taking this
test, which includes the following:
• Take the exam as if it was a proctored
test. No textbooks, tutors, or outside
assistance is allowed. It is important
that your mathematical knowledge is
refl ected in the test score. Artifi cially
high test scores may lead to student
taking courses that are above their
mathematical ability.
• Use only the calculator provided in
the ALEKS system.
2. Read through the testing information
and test topics at http://math.arizona.
edu/placement/mpt , and access the
test through this website. Make sure
you know which test to take.
3. Once you complete the test, you will
receive a score. Th is score will also be
available in UAccess Student (link to
http://uaccess.arizona.edu/) under
Student Center, Transfer Credit: Report,
Test Credits within 24 hours of completing
the test.
4. After testing, if you want to improve
your placement, please consult the
You should study or take a class before
retesting. Th e retest will be administered
in the UA Testing Offi ce on the UA
Car, Bike Sharing Services Cut Costs
By Bill Davidson
UA Parking & Transportation Services
UA parents and students are trying to
save money by using the new Connect by
Hertz car-sharing services, brought to campus
by Parking & Transportation Services
(PTS).
Connect by Hertz, one of the industry
leaders in car-sharing programs, has members
worldwide who pay an annual fee of
$50 and rent cars for as little as $8 an hour,
with gas and insurance included. Part of UA
Parking & Transportation’s sponsorship of
the campus Connect by Hertz Car sharing
includes free “Introductory Memberships.”
Th ese memberships are made available to
any faculty, staff , student, or UA neighbor
who wishes to try out car sharing to see if
it’s a good fi t for their lifestyles. Th e off er
has a value of $50. Just use the promotional
codes provided on the fl yers and web site to
receive the free membership.
Here on campus, Connect by Hertz off ers
Prius’, Escapes and Mini Coopers at fi ve
locations: Second Street Garage, Sixth Street
Garage, Tyndall Avenue Garage, Highland
Avenue, and Olive Street.
Universities, like the UA are a particularly
large opportunity, because parents have
been looking to save money by sending their
children to school without cars. According
to a study by the AAA, even a small sedan
driven just 10,000 miles per year can cost
more than $5,500 to own and maintain.
Universities, like the UA, want to reduce
traffi c congestion, and still give students
who cannot keep a car on campus, the
chance to drive to a movie, concert, dinner,
or shopping. Connect by Hertz also accepts
drivers who are 18, unlike most full-service
rental car companies, which require that
drivers be at least 25 for rentals.
UA
Parents
21
Car-sharing takes cars off the road, and
that fi ts in with the sustainability movement
at the UA. Connect by Hertz and PTS also
hire students to help maintain its fl eet of
cars.
So far, 493 students, faculty and staff have
become Connect by Hertz members, a fi gure
PTS expects to grow as word spreads that
the cars are on campus and are aff ordable at
$8 an hour. Sign up for a membership by going
to: connectbyhertz.com and type in your
promotional code for the free membership,
your driver’s license number and a credit
card. Upon approval Connect by Hertz will
mail a card to you within several days.
PTS feels that the program will persuade
students to keep their cars at home. Th ere
are a lot of students who bring their car but
do not use it, but want to have it there as a
safety blanket.
And if you think that car sharing is the
wave of the future, PTS has brought bike
sharing to the campus. Students, staff and
faculty are eligible to use the bicycles free of
charge. Th e 10 bicycles are comfort style designed,
single speed cruiser bikes with dual
pivot hand brakes. Bikes are checked out at
two locations–Sixth Street Garage cashier
booth and Tyndall Avenue Garage cashier
booth, between 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Mon.-Fri.
Bike loan period is for one working day and
the bike must be returned by 4 p.m.
Off-Campus Housing
Living off Campus Next Year:
What to Consider
The chance that a student will
live off-campus sometime in
their college career is almost a
guarantee. There are a few things
to consider in helping fi nd that
perfect place to call home.
Start Early: Begin searching at least 2
months before your planned move-in date. If you are
looking at a place for the spring, try to have a lease
signed before winter break. Most properties will
allow you to move in when you return in January.
Budget: What will your monthly expenses look
like? Include rent, utilities, groceries, transportation,
and entertainment expenses in your budget.
Roommates: Determine how many
roommates you would like and who they will be. It
is a great way to offset costs. Be careful of who you
choose for roommates as you may not really know a
person until you live with them.
Inspect the Condition: When you visit a
complex, ask to see the unit you will be renting, not a
model. Check areas such as appliances, doors, lights,
faucets, storage spaces, and other areas. If you want
the apartment only under the conditions that there are
repairs, get a written agreement from your landlord that
includes dates of completion.
Inspect for Security: Inspect the outside
of the complex to check for adequate lighting in parking
lots and other areas. Ask about security measures on
the property and if any incidents have occurred recently.
Also, inspect the unit to make sure all of the windows
and doors lock properly and there is a peep hole in the
front door.
Deposits: Be prepared to put down a deposit,
as most properties require one. It is usually the fi rst
month’s rent. Most utilities also require a deposit for
new services.
Pets: If you own or want a pet, know the policies
of the housing provider before signing a lease. Some
places allow only certain types of pets while others do
not even allow them.
Leases: Leases come in many different lengths.
Some are month to month while others are for a
specifi ed amount of time (i.e. 12 month, 6 month).
Make sure you understand everything in your lease.
“Th e majority of students
Jason Casares, assistant dean
Th e results also show that
students are taking steps to
maintain their own personal
Based on the results, most students
have adequate knowledge when it comes
Offi ce will continue to work with
its partners to accomplish the mission of
creating a safe campus culture.
“Th e survey allows us to get more
specifi c data concerning our current student
population and helps us continue to
maintain and enhance the resources and
services we provide to our students related
to campus safety,” Casares said.
One example is the formation of Safe-
Cats, which began during the fall 2009.
“As a result of this data, we have
launched a social networking campaign
through SafeCats, with a goal to get messages
of safety out to students as early as
possible,” Casares said. “We will continue
to advocate for earlier education regarding
safety on campus.”
Th rough SafeCats, students now receive
information regarding safety through
online social networks such as Facebook,
Twitter and YouTube, as well as the Safe-
Cats blog, uasafcats.blogspot.com.
Casares said he hopes this program will
get students thinking about safety in their
daily lives.
Would you like to pay less
and get more for your
housing dollars?
If you answered yes, then you should consider
living at Sahara Apartments.
Here is a comparison between what you get and what you have to pay at one of
the on campus Residence Halls, with what you get and what you pay at Sahara.
If you live at Sahara Apartments you will have a bigger apartment, your own
kitchen and private bath (neither of which are available on campus),
AND you will save thousands of dollars.
How much are you going to save? So glad you asked! Let’s say you were hoping to
live at Posada San Pedro. It would cost $9,774 to live in a single occupancy ROOM
for a total of 8 months. You live there from August 19 to December 18, (you
HAVE to leave for the holidays) and then come back from January 9 to May 14.
When you live in one of Sahara’s single-occupancy studio apartments (with your
own kitchen and private bath), you stay 11.5 months (from August 15, 2010
to August 1, 2011) for only $6,037.50. And you DON’T HAVE to leave during
holiday breaks!
You save $3,736.50
Check out our web site to see your savings for double-occupancy accommodations
at Sahara Apartments compared to what you would have paid at the Residence
Halls. You won’t believe how much you get for so little at Sahara.
“What should I do with my life?” Is a
question asked by most college students,
often following a talk with their parents,
which hangs over them their entire academic
career. Th is very question is what
set Brett Farmiloe on a unique journey after
graduation from Th e University of Arizona
and eventually into a career.
In May 2006, while preparing for graduation
from UA’s Eller College of Management
with an accounting degree, the idea of what
to do with his life loomed over Brett’s head.
His original plan to get his CPA license
and be a good corporate citizen would
have been the simpler path, however after
reading the statistic that half the workforce
dislikes their job, the idea for a book
surfaced—“What’s the diff erence between
people who like their job and people who
don’t like their job?”
From this question, the idea for a road
trip across America was created. Interviews
were set up with people who loved
their job, an RV was purchased ( from Craig-
The University of Arizona Spring 2010 29
Pursue the Passion, One Grad’s Discovery
list) and after interviewing three Tucson
icons who love their jobs, the journey began.
Th ree hours into the trip, with steam
spewing from under the hood, the journey
all but ended. Several interviews were completed
that summer, but by summer’s end
Brett began a job as a corporate auditor.
Great ideas are hard to let die, so after
hearing nothing from publishers following
several book proposals, Brett made the
decision to quit his job, fi nd sponsors for a
new road trip and begin the journey again.
In June 2007, Jobing.com agreed to sponsor
the entire “Pursue the Passion” trip - new
RV and all. Over the next four months,
Brett Farmiloe, Noah Pollock, Jay Whiting
and Jay Hubbell, all UA Wildcats, began a
journey that covered 16,000 miles, 38 states
and 300 interviews of people who loved
their job.
At the end of the four month odyssey,
Brett was hired by Jobing.com and began
the process of writing a book about the
cross country trip. Two years later, following
a complete re-write, “Pursue the Passion”
was published and became available
on Amazon.com in February.
UA Grads Brett Farmiloe, Zach Hubble,
Noah Pollock and Jay Whiting traveled
across the U.S. to interview people who
love their jobs.
When asked what this book is about and
who his audience is, Brett responded, “Th is
book is about what people who enjoy their
work are doing that half of the American
workforce isn’t doing. Th is past year, that
stat reached its all time high since the
Conference Board started keeping track.
Now, only 45% of people working actually
like what they do. Th is book is really
about reversing that negative employment
statistic and getting people connected with
what excites them.” As to who his audience
is, Brett stated, “Th e book’s audience is the
unhappy workers, the recent grads, and the
parents of those recent grads.” “Pursue the
Passion” is a purchase to consider for any
student.
Brett continues to work at Jobing.com
as their Social Media Manager, where he
connects people with jobs that are more
in line with “what they’re about.” His job
also sees him traveling across the country
20-30 times a year to speak about “Pursue
the Passion”, Gen Y and Social Media. Brett
Apply for a U.S. Passport at The University of Arizona Passport Application Acceptance Facility!
The International Affairs Passport Application
Acceptance Facility provides a vital public service,
promotes public relations and is authorized to accept
and execute passport applications for United States
citizens. The facility makes it easy and convenient to
obtain and submit passport applications. This service is
provided to the University campus community as well as
the community-at-large.
On June 1, 2009, the U.S. government implemented
the full requirements of the land and sea phase of the
Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. The new rule
requires U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea
or land ports of entry to have a U.S. passport. Currently,
U.S. passport applicants can obtain their U.S. passport
approximately six weeks after applying. Take advantage
of U.S. Department of State’s fast processing times now
and submit your passport application at the International
Affairs Passport Application Acceptance Facility!
