The Mashpee Chamber of Commerce invites you to discover our
quaint coastal town that’s like a treasure chest filled with natural,
historical, cultural and mercantile riches! There is something for
everyone to discover and explore.
More people are finding out that Mashpee is the perfect place to
start a business, visit and live. As a result, the Mashpee Chamber
of Commerce works very closely with our community leaders to
promote the town and the business community to ensure the
success of everyone’s visit or venture. Businesses are choosing
Mashpee for its prime real estate, the latest business technology
and the variety of professional services that are available.
Vistors are mesmerized by the natural beauty of South Cape Beach, numerous
wilderness trails, and secluded ponds. They marvel at the number of golf courses
and the eclectic choices of restaurants and shops. Our guests love to pamper
themselves at the spa, frequent the theatre and museums, go for a bike ride or
take advantage of various outdoor activities and special events that span the
entire year.
In fact, the Mashpee Chamber’s special events are community celebrations
with global appeal. Experience A Taste of Mashpee, La Tavola (an Italian dinner
under the stars), Girls & Dolls Day, and Mashpee’s Twelve Days of Christmas that
culminates with an electrifying Christmas parade that lights up the streets at night.
The proceeds from these events benefit the Mashpee Chamber’s scholarship fund,
the Community Thanksgiving Dinner, and help fund business workshops, forums,
and other Chamber initiatives. View the community calendar starting on page 38
for all the details about the chamber’s events and a list of other local events.

Thanks to Mother Nature’s generosity, a rich Native American history, and a
hospitable community, Mashpee is the perfect place to be any time of year!
Each season has its own cache of treasures just waiting
to be discovered. That’s why more people are visiting
all year long, choosing to call Mashpee home and
opening businesses here. There is really a lot going
on in Mashpee throughout the year, but each season
has its bragging rights.
spring is a special time in Mashpee.
A sense of community pride permeates the air as
businesses and residents prepare for the new season.
“My favorite season in Mashpee is late spring, when
everything is newly green, the weather is willful and
all the joy and chaos of summer is still ahead. Meanwhile,
it’s the quiet beginning of things,” says Marcy
Carsey, television producer and Mashpee homeowner.
The Mashpee Chamber kicks off the season with “A
Taste of Mashpee,” a special event that features over
100 wines and the area’s fine cuisine.“ Mother Nature
is also busy at work. Mashpee’s landscape is airbrushed
with color as daffodils and crocuses sprout, and tree
buds awaken with blossoms and a sense of renewal.

The Santuit Pond Reserve is highly recommended if you’re looking to get away
from the hustle and bustle. It’s the perfect place for birdwatchers,” says Andrew
McManus, Mashpee’s Conservation Agent and Herring Warden. Blue Heron, Night
Crowns and Osprey are some of the bird species known to the area. “If you’re
lucky you may even spot a bald eagle,” McManus says. Predatory birds like the
Osprey, migrate their way back to Mashpee in early April from Central and South
America just in time for the beginning of the herring season. The Osprey population
is rebounding in Mashpee and nests can be found all over town.
Spring is also when you can spot pink lady slippers in Mashpee, a rare and very
beautiful orchid. “The best time to see them is mid to late June,” says McManus.
They grow in pockets in the woods and usually can be seen right off the trails.
Fittingly, the pink lady slipper is also known as the ‘moccasin flower’ and Mashpee
is one of the few places where the scarce flower still grows.

summer is rich in substance but Mashpee’s South Cape
Beach steals the show. There is more than a mile of coastline decorated with
rolling sand dunes, wild salt-marshes and fragrant beach flowers. In fact, all year
long more locals and visitors are realizing that South Cape Beach is a the perfect
place for an invigorating walk, bird-watching and exploring nearby nature trails.
Summer does have its advantages however, as swimmers enjoy the warm tranquil
waters of the Vineyard Sound. Sunbathers are kissed by warm rays of sunshine
as they nestle in the soft sand to relax. Families picnic and play as fishermen cast
their rods patiently waiting for the catch of the day.
“Each season in Mashpee has something very special and unique
to offer. Summer allows everyone to enjoy the beauty of Mashpee
and all the activities like going to the beach, boating, walking,
golfing and having fun at special events like La Tavola!”

One of the highlights of the summer is La Tavola!
The Mashpee Chamber of Commerce invites you to
attend this festive Italian evening of food, wine, and
song. Joy Street at South Cape Village is transformed
into Little Italy as friends gather around festive tables
for a five course Italian banquet as they are serenaded
by famed Italian Tenor, Aaron Caruso!
Mashpee is a special place based on its natural
beauty, rivers, ponds, wildlife and strong cultural
relationship of the Mashpee Wampanoag – a
federally recognized tribal nation that embraces
ancient and modern-day Native American culture and
has been in existence for more than 12,000 years.
The Mashpee River Reservation and woodlands
protect a unique waterway that sustains rare, searun
brook trout and is important to the Mashpee
Wampanoag. This five-mile tidal river begins at
Mashpee and Wakeby Ponds and empties into
Pirate’s Cove on Popponesset Bay. With two miles
of trails plus additional connecting trails, summer is
a great time for hiking; you can listen for songbirds
in thickets and watch for wading birds patrolling
the shore.

autumn with its radiant foliage and sense of calm appeals
to visitors and locals alike. With outdoor festivals, farmer’s markets and fairs
scheduled, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Visitors from all over the world travel to the Mashpee area in October and
November for the cranberry harvest. According to the town’s conservation
department, Mashpee’s Garner Farley Bog off of Old Barnstable Road is actively
harvested. The Quashnet Valley Golf Course wraps around 330 acres of Cape Cod
cranberry bogs. Cranberry Lane has great views of a cranberry bog and Santuit
Pond. And, the Willowbend cranberry bog looks like it’s covered with a bright red
blanket late in autumn as the cranberries surface for harvesting.
“ September is a glorious month in Mashpee. The crowds have
thinned, the fish are biting again and the surf is often up.
The water remains only a touch cooler than its August highs,
keeping the temperature on land warm as well. A trip off Cape,
always serves to drive home this seasonal phenomenon. As you
head north and west, fall advances before your eyes: the trees
change and the air cools. Meanwhile, back in Mashpee, summer
is still hanging on for another few weeks.”

Another autumn favorite is the Mashpee Recreation
Department’s Oktoberfest Celebration & 10K Run,
which is traditionally held the Saturday of Columbus
Day weekend. At 9am, the day starts off with a 10K
Run from South Cape Beach to Mashpee Commons.
After the race, join everyone at the Mashpee Commons
Village Green for a full day of fun, including traditional
music, authentic German music, K-9 dog show, face
painting, a moon bounce and an arts & crafts fair.
The Bier Garten serves up brat wurst and beer.
Then, there’s the shopping season. School shopping
in September transitions to pre-holiday shopping
in October and November as shoppers look for
bargains and special gifts at many of the distinct
shops in the area. On Sunday, November 11, the
Mashpee Chamber presents “Girls & Dolls Day,”
a day of beauty, shopping, dining and fun for girls,
their dolls and their special guests. The event is
growing in popularity as it attracts local and visitors
alike. Girls & Dolls Day is also designed to give local
businesses a jump start to the holiday season.

winter has its own appeal in Mashpee! The Mashpee River
Reservation and woodlands include hundreds of acres of natural gems that
attract adventure-seekers all year long. White pine forests, fresh- and salt-water
marshes surrounded by ornate wildlife make each experience unique and exciting,
especially for snowshoers and cross country skiers.
To celebrate the holiday season, the Mashpee Chamber of Commerce, local
officials and the business community work closely together to prepare special events
at South Cape Village and Mashpee Commons. The festivities begin shortly after
Thanksgiving with the lighting of the Mashpee Pops Rotary Light Display – a
must-see that officially starts the holiday season in Mashpee.

The Mashpee Chamber of Commerce’s 12 Days
of Christmas is designed to stimulate business,
celebrate community and entertain residents and our
special guests. The 12 Days of Christmas campaign
ends with an electrifying Christmas Parade with
floats and bands that light up the streets of Mashpee.
This year, the parade is scheduled for December 8 –
kicking off at 5:30pm at the Mashpee Commons and
culminating at South Cape Village with a spectacular
block party. Last year, the Parade featured the Avalon
String Band, better known as the Mummers. The band
dazzled the crowds with their colorful costumes and
unique sound. This year’s parade is already shaping
up to be another winner and the Avalon String Band
is coming back for an encore performance!
“Our goal was to put on a holiday
lighting display that would not only
wow the citizens of Mashpee, but would
bring visitors to Mashpee from all over
the Cape and beyond during the holiday
season. Every indication is that we
exceeded the expectations of many.”

The Friendship and Generosity
of Myra Kraft Lives on at the
Boys & Girls Club of Cape Cod

On July 20, 2011, the wife of New
England Patriot’s owner Robert Kraft
died, leaving behind a legacy of goodwill
across New England and especially
in Mashpee. The Boys & Girls Club of
Cape Cod will never forget their greatest
gift of all: the friendship of Myra Kraft.
“The Boys & Girls Club of Cape Cod
would, quite literally, not exist…without
the Krafts and we are so grateful for
what they have done over the years,”
said Executive Director Ruth Provost.
Her death came as a shock to the
organization and the community. “You
are never ready to lose a friend, and this
entire community and our 999 kids in
particular lost a very real and dear friend.”
When fund raising efforts were stalled
in 1998, Myra and Robert Kraft made a
$500,000 donation to help the Boys &
Girls Club of Cape Cod open its doors.
The Krafts would drive by a thermometer
on Route 151 that represented how
much money had been raised for the
club’s construction.
“I think Myra was the first to notice its
stagnation and it became something
that we commented on every time we
saw it,” Robert Kraft said. Consequently,

the Krafts decided they needed to do
something to ignite the fund raising
efforts.
“One of the many things I loved about
my sweetheart, once she was committed
to a cause, there was no one better
at raising the necessary funds,” Mr.
Kraft said.
“The Krafts contributed in a big way
and the rest is history,” Provost said.
“It’s an investment that will pay dividends
for generations to come,” Mr.
Kraft said about the couple’s contribution.
“We have always tried to help
organizations that help children.”
The Krafts were already aware of the
many resources that the Boys & Girls
Club provide to the youth in our
communities. In 1995, Myra became the
first woman to chair the Boys & Girls
Club of Boston, a position she held
until 2002.
Ruth Provost has fond memories of
Myra’s involvement with the Cape
Cod Chapter. “She played in the annual
golf tournament until a few years ago,”
Provost said.
“Myra was your typical Cape Codder
when she was here. I remember stopping
by the house to pick up some
zucchini that she had grown in her
garden one summer. That remains one
of my fondest memories – everyone is
always trying to get rid of their extra
zucchini!”
Ruth took some home to cook for her son
who wasn’t a big fan of the vegetable.
“I told my son that he better eat the
zucchini because it was special – Myra
Kraft, the wife of the New England
Patriot’s owner, grew the zucchini in her
garden.” The strategy worked, prompting
Ruth’s son to pick up his fork and
take a bite.
Mr. Kraft said his wife loved her garden:
“She always asked me to help out with
the weeding, but I wasn’t very good
at it and probably wasn’t much help to
her when I tried.”
Myra also liked to fish. “Our Friday
night dinners on the Cape were always
the fish that she caught, cleaned and
cooked along with an abundance of
vegetables straight from her garden.”
Although the Krafts have achieved
international fame, they are proud to call
New England home and have owned
property on Popponesset Island in
Mashpee for more than 40 years.
“Mashpee welcomed us a long time
ago,” Mr. Kraft said. “We have always
felt at home here. We never wanted to
live in a community that wasn’t neighborly
and Mashpee has a great crosssection
of people who have always
been wonderful neighbors.”
Their son Jonathan agrees. “Mashpee
has been a summer home to our family
for over 40 years and my mother felt
very connected to the youth there.

“It’s challenging to run a non-profit in this economic climate and we
appreciate all the help we can get” Provost said. She is very thankful
for a generous community. “Myra and Robert led the way, now it’s up
to all of us to make sure that the dream they helped bring to life with
their generosity remains a reality for generations to come.”

She felt this about children everywhere,
but in particular she felt a very deep
commitment to the children in the
communities in which she lived.”
Myra and Robert have touched so many
lives with their generosity and have done
more than their share for Cape Cod
causes. In 2006, the Krafts donated
$100,000 for the construction of the
Community Health Center of Cape
Cod, which is also located in Mashpee.
“We are privileged to live in the
greatest country in the world and I am
fortunate to have lived a blessed life.
I was raised to value family, faith and
philanthropy -- values that I have tried
to instill in my children and that they
have tried to instill in theirs. Today,
our family’s focus is on creating jobs,
improving education and creating
affordable healthcare for all people.”
The Kraft’s focus is evident in Mashpee.
The Boys & Girls Club and the entire
Cape community will always treasure
their generosity and friendship.
“My mother was a passionate believer
in engaging and providing opportunities
to children,” said Jonathan. “Opportunities
for them to fill their time productively
through either mental stimulation
or physical exercise, all in an effort to
help them eventually become welladjusted
and functioning young adults.”
Myra is being remembered as a very
special friend to the philanthropic
community region wide. “We know she’s
smiling down at us,” Provost said.
There is a lot to smile about. The Boys
& Girls Club of Cape Cod provides
a variety of programs and services
with incentives to help each child
excel academically, physically, and
holistically.“Our children get points
toward prizes for doing their homework
and extra credit projects,” Provost said.
Programs at the club focus on Internet
safety, self-awareness for young girls,
alcohol and drug prevention, health
and fitness, sports as well as arts and
crafts, to name a few. Suzanne Howes,
the education director, offers homework
help and free tutoring to the
children after school. “We work very
closely with the kids to give them extra
help,” said Howes. “It’s rewarding.
We’ve seen significant improvement.”
“The Boys & Girls Clubs provide such a
tremendous resource to children of all
ages, especially those of single-parent
families,” said Mr. Kraft. “It’s all about
getting the kids in the door,” Provost
noted. “We track our kids for impact and
we see students making measurable
improvements.”
According to a Boys & Girls Club alumni
survey, 67% of alums said they avoided
trouble with the law, drugs and alcohol
because they went to a Boys & Girls Club;
28% said they would have dropped out
of school, and 34% of African American
males said they completed four years
of college, which is more than double
the national average of just 15%.
“This is what I get out of it,” Provost
said referring to the quantifiable results.
“And this is what our donors get out
of it because this is a place where each
donation makes a real difference for
Cape Cod’s children.”

For All the Right Reasons!

Mashpee truly is a town for all seasons and for all those who enjoy all seasons!
Or, stated even better – a town for all reasons.
Several years ago, our little small town of Mashpee – full of culture and
surrounded by water – was subjected to a modern day “go west, young man.”
Well, maybe every direction but west since the water is to our east.
We grew, and grew, and grew, bursting at the seams, budgets increasing every
year from the addition of commercial mixed-use development projects, new
schools, a new library and a growing population. If I am not mistaken, Mashpee
at one time was considered one of the fastest growing towns on the Cape.
In fact, now it’s not uncommon to hear a resident say “I’m from Mashpee” instead
of saying Cape Cod and astonishingly the person they are talking to knows exactly
where that is. That’s a good thing, I think. Why do I think that’s good? Well,
because our little best kept secret is no longer!
On the other hand, what do we have that would ever allow a person to say “it’s
a town for all seasons” and/or “for all reasons.”
Well, let , s see. Of course we have the ocean and all its
bays and estuaries, lakes and ponds. But we also have
golf courses, shopping, restaurants, nightlife and jobs.
And, we have a town that is well managed with annual budgets that are kept
within reason, a reasonable tax rate, solid police force, fire department and
department of public works as well as good schools with successful academic
and sports programs and a library that is the envy of the Cape.
Town government is managed by five selectmen and a Town Manager, a
throwback to how government is to be run for and by the people. Volunteers
are a tremendous part of our overall municipal team, committees, board, and
commissions, covering everything from South Cape Beach to shell fishing. We
truly live in and manage our own town.
Let’s Talk Addition.
We Are a Green Community (the First on Cape Cod).
We have solar panels on all town buildings, and a couple educational wind
turbines at our Chamber of Commerce. We recently placed six solar bees in
Santuit Pond to help keep the water clean, and are deep in the process of coming
up with ways to better manage our wastewater. Our Christmas parade this year
was based on a green theme and we were successful in convincing the Mummers
from Philadelphia to come to our little town of Mashpee for the evening, marching
along with our local officials as part of our very exciting Christmas kick off.
Recent activity suggests growth along the lines of an assisted living/memory
center, which in conjunction with our health care center will really make an impact
on the needs of the aging population.
In fact while it may seem gauche to say, we seem to have it all right here past
Exit 2 on the Cape highway. This is an exciting time to be a resident of Mashpee,
but don’t take my word for it. Come on down and see for yourself. But remember,
we love our little piece of the rock here in Mashpee, so bring your appreciation
and bring your camera. We’ll be posing right outside Town Hall.

Energy Efficiency and Its Role in Mashpee’s Energy Policy
(Green Community: Mashpee tackles energy efficiency and policy)

The rising cost of energy is a common concern
everywhere and the town of Mashpee is no
exception. In 2007, while at a meeting with
the Mashpee Energy Committee, the town
decided to face the issue head on.
“We started where the State and other
experts told us to start, [with] energy audits
of our buildings,“ said town manager Joyce
Mason. Over the course of a year and a half,
the Department of Energy Resources and the
Cape Light Compact performed several audits
of town buildings throughout Mashpee, which lead
to influx of funding from agencies because the town
now had the information to implement efficiency measures.

garner great and warranted
attention by the press,”
said Mason,“ any expert
in the energy field will tell

town used $360,122 (or 62.8%)
of the monies allotted. “While this
percentage is up from recent years, we believe that we can do
better,” said Mason. “By letting folks know that this program is
available and participation is easy, we hope to maximize our use
of the program funds.”
A major coup, the town of Mashpee was designated a “green
community” in 2010. But, the battle hasn’t been won. For

home of the wampanoag tribe

Welcome to Mashpee, the home of our tribe for approximately 11,000 years.
Many a storm and visitor has swept through our woods and found comfort on
our beaches both fresh and salt. Our first visitors from the west were the Vikings
during the year of 1004. They anchored in Waquoit Bay and stayed for quite a
while longer than most folks use their time share abodes. We’ve seen many come
and go like Verrazano, Cabot, Zuni’s, Lenape’s and other explorers. We have a
history of hospitality one might say. Our culture directs us to be kind, friendly, and
hospitable which allowed the early English settlers to prosper.
The Mashpee Wampanoag are
one of three surviving tribes of the
original sixty-nine in the Wampanoag
Nation. The other two tribes still
living on their original homelands are
the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head
(Aquinnah) on Martha’s Vineyard and
the Herring Pond tribe in Bournedale.
The Marshpee (later called Mashpee)
tribe was under the oversight of English
missionaries for nearly 200 years. The
reservation period in Mashpee officially
began in 1677 and restricted our
freedom until 1868.

adapted and managed in a number of
different ways besides hunting, fishing,
and planting. During the 17th and 18th
centuries we were involved in the fur,
rope, timber, and sassafras trade. In the
19th and early 20th centuries Mashpee
Wampanoag men were engaged in the
whaling industry sailing the Atlantic,
Pacific, Arctic and Indian Oceans. Those
mariners were usually out to sea for at
least a year at a time hunting whales.
The fishing is still great here in Mashpee.
Our rivers, the Mashpee and Quashnet,
have been loaded with herring during
the spring months. Smoked herring
were exported to Europe from Mashpee
during the 20th century. The cranberry
industry and a broom factory in Mashpee
also once provided local employment.
Today, most Mashpee Natives are
employed in the building and health care
industries or work for the tribe in a
variety of professions. Subsistence farming,
fishing and hunting are still practiced
by tribal members. See you down the
bay; try hard not to leave a footprint.
The Mashpee
Wampanoag Tribe has both

leadership for our people. The
Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe is a
federally recognized tribe (2007),
allowing it to actively participate in
federal programs designed for Indian
Nations. We maintain a government
to government relationship with all
federal agencies to support the health,
education, and welfare needs of the
tribe.
Our traditional leadership includes
the Chief and his Circle of advisors,
Medicine Man, and Clan Mothers.
The Chief and Medicine man have
permanent seats at the Tribal Council
table to ensure cultural concerns are
included in decision-making. Tribal
members seek advice, ceremony, and
social justice from these leaders.

like to be a student in the mid-1800s
being tested on your ability to “cipher”
(do math) under the stern eye of the
schoolmaster.
Our cultural activities and ceremonies are not always open to the public.
However, do join us at our annual Powwow. This year it will be held at the
Barnstable County Fairgrounds on June 29, June 30 and July 1.

Cotuit Center for the Arts is often described as a hidden treasure on
Rte. 28. Near the Cotuit/Mashpee border, it seems odd that anything
would be described as “hidden” when it sits on the main artery running
from one end of the Cape to the other. But what’s hard to imagine when
driving by the campus, is the vibrant, architecturally stunning cultural
center tucked back from the road.
The Center"
as the locals refer to it, consists of four separate
buildings including a performance space/art gallery, teaching studio, annex, and
administrative offices building. The main building boasts a 175 seat performance
space where seven large-scale theatrical productions are mounted each year, a
host of concerts and special events, and a new series of film screenings on the
Center’s new 26-foot movie screen and high definition projection system. In
addition to the performance activity in this building, there are two levels of art
galleries with dozens of exhibits rotating throughout the year feature work by
local, regional and international artists.
The Art Studio"
is a smaller building dedicated to
teaching a multitude of arts disciplines to students of all ages and abilities. During
the course of a year dozens of classes with hundreds of students take place
including the popular Ukulele Orchestra, Art projects with students and parents,
Journaling and writing workshops and community outreach projects benefitting
members of our community who might not otherwise experience an artistic or
creative outlet.
The Annex"
is the two-story house that sits right on Rte. 28 and
features our little gem, the Black Box Theater – a 25-seat intimate performance
space where experimental, unusual and often powerful works are presented.
The Annex also houses 3 additional classrooms and a darkroom, where pinhole
photography classes take place.
In 2011, the Center presented over 225 separate events. The campus is run by
a small staff of four full- and three part-time employees and depends heavily on
support from the community in terms of volunteer support, business sponsorship
and membership in order to maintain the rich schedule of events.
The Center prides itself on delivering to the community the highest possible
quality in everything it does. Last year over 10,000 hours of volunteer support
were logged. Our actors, stage crews, costumers, ushers, docents and general
helpers are the backbone of this wonderful treasure. They give and in return the
Center gives the community a true artistic home. In every sense of the word.
So join the bandwagon – become a member or give a friend a gift
membership. Volunteer to work as a docent, a set painter, an usher, a
costumer, a sound or light operator – or just come hang out.
As we like to say…Do It. At Cotuit. I guarantee you’ll be glad you did.

Congratulations to Mark Lawrence, owner of
Polar Cave Ice Cream Parlor, this year’s Mashpee
recipient of the “Build A Better Mouse Trap
Award” presented by Cape Cod SCORE.
Mark Lawrence came to the United States to attend the
University of Nevada and continued living there for five years
working at some of the city’s leading hotels: Las Vegas Hilton,
Caesar’s Palace and The Dunes.
In 1982, an opportunity arose to open a travel agency in the
Boston area. Mark moved east and soon discovered the
magic of Cape Cod. “A friend invited me to the Cape for a
weekend getaway, and as they say, I got sand in my shoes
immediately!” says Mark. “The Cape reminded me so much of
the south coast of England where I would holiday as a child.”
After 20 years in the Cape Cod hospitality industry, Mark
decided to step away from corporate America and opened
Polar Cave Ice Cream Parlor in Mashpee.
As each year passed, word of mouth spread and the business
grew. Polar Cave works closely with many local organizations
including United Way of Cape Cod, Kids Klub, Boys & Girls
Club of Cape Cod, Cape Cod Children’s Museum, Mashpee
Children’s Library and school PTA’s, and is a sponsor of
sports teams. Whenever an organization seeks a donation,
Mark is there for them with gift certificates and advice. Mark
claims, “In all our years, we’ve never said no to a fund raising
request, especially when the cause is local and our children
are involved.”
Polar Cave has a loyal following of customers, many of
whom have been there from the early days. “I would not be
in business today if it were not for my ‘family’ of customers,”
he says. Yet possibly Polar Cave’s greatest customers are
the ones they never see. “We offer ice cream to patients
of a VNA hospice nurse.” With tears welling in his eyes, he
continues, “Whether it be a scoop or a quart, it does not
matter. To be able to bring a smile for a brief moment is
priceless to me. I wish my father had been able to have such
a treat in his final days.”

The Mashpee Christmas Parade gets bigger

This year the famous Avalon String Band,
better known as the Mummers from

bob weekes: a man for all seasons

Where can I buy
that famous lobster roll?
That’s the most frequently asked
question at the Mashpee Chamber of
Commerce’s welcome center. People
are always asking for directions to
Mashpee’s Marketplace Raw Bar and
once they experience it they always
want more. It’s probably because the
lobster roll and Bob Weekes, the
owner, both have a lot of substance.
“I’m honored and I’m glad they ask
about it,” said Weekes, who has owned
the Raw Bar for 28 years.
The Mashpee Chamber isn’t the only
place people are stopping to ask for
directions to this seafood paradise.
Weekes said “Police officers tell me
that people are always asking them
how to get to the Raw Bar and homeowners
who live nearby are always
being asked how to get to my place.”
The seasonal raw bar is tucked inside
the Popponesset Market Place in New
Seabury and is busy from the minute
it opens its doors in the spring to when
it closes with their annual Halloween
party. It’s a place where friends meet
and where visitors become friends.
“The Raw Bar is a place where you
can come in and forget everything
else that is going on in your life,”
Weekes said, stressing his no cell
phone policy. “I just want you to
come in, leave your cell phone in the
car, have a drink, have a lobster roll
and some seafood, listen to some nice
music and meet new people. That’s
what the Raw Bar is all about.”
People visit the Raw Bar
from all around the world and
from all walks of life.
In fact, you never know whom you
might be sitting next to. But, as
diverse as the crowd may be, most
of them have one thing in common:
They want to sink their teeth into the
famous lobster roll. Weekes said that
newcomers are always pleasantly
surprised.
“The first thing that hits them is the size
of it because we give them generous
portions.” The rolls are jam-packed
with lobster meat. One sandwich easily
feeds two people. But the lobster rolls
are not only huge; they’re delicious.
Surprisingly, Weekes even
shares his secret ingredient:
“They’re made with love
that’s why they’re so
good!” Weekes’s credits
his friend Sean Noonan
who died five years
ago for sharing the
secret recipe with his
patrons. Weekes
taught Noonan
how to make the
lobster salad
and really misses
his dear friend.
“Noonan would
always say they’re
made with love,
and we continue to
make them with lots
of love.”
Incidentally, it’s all about
the love when you get to
know Bob Weekes, which he shares
generously with the community.
Weekes is engaged in a number of
activities and participates in many
of the Mashpee Chamber’s events
including A Taste of Mashpee and the
annual Christmas parade.

“It’s at night. The floats are all lit up
with lights that twinkle and they have
Christmas music playing from them,”
he said. “It’s different than going to
a daytime parade. Everybody gets all
excited and I think it’s a great way to
kick off the holiday season!”
Weekes is also known for supporting
many local organizations, including
the Boys & Girls Club, The Cape Cod
Women’s Shelter and Dare to be Alive.
“I make my living here,” he said. “I just
can’t take from the community without
giving back.”
I feel great.
And very grateful.
Each day is a gift.
The community had a chance to show
their love and appreciation for Bob
when he needed a kidney transplant
two years ago. “All of a sudden I
needed help. My customers from all
over the country were there for me.”
Weekes said he still has every card he
received in a box next to his bed. “Every
once in a while I’ll read the cards because
they’re filled with so much love and
positive energy.”
Weekes was fortunate to have six
donors with perfect matches, but it was
his sister Sandy who donated one of
her own kidneys to save Bob’s life.
It’s obvious when you see Bob Weekes
hard at work that he’s in his element
and doing what he enjoys most. “Every
year is a new year. I still get butterflies
in my stomach when we open.”
Weekes continues to dish out the love
with his lobster rolls and everything
else that he does.

Just a few years ago, Mashpee resident
Sonja Sheasley was taking classes at
the now closed Sandwich Village Herb
Shop. She was interested in learning
how to make natural lotions for her
kids. “They have very sensitive skin
and I was trying everything,” Sheasley
said. And that’s when the idea hit
her, turning a concerned mom into a
budding entrepreneur.
She is now the co-founder of Bum
Boosa Bamboo Products, a company
that makes eco-friendly bamboo
baby wipes, 100% natural diaper rash
ointment with nutrient-rich bamboo
powder and the world’s first 100%
bamboo pulp bathroom tissue.
She began first by doing research on
baby wipes and discovered that most
are loaded with harsh chemicals. “I was
shocked to find out that most of the
baby wipes on the market are made
from plastic,” Sheasley said.

One statistic even reported that in
the United States alone, 40 billion
individual sheets of baby wipes go
into the landfill every year. Disturbed
with the information but full of
determination, she set off to bring to
the market a more natural and ecofriendly
baby wipe.
In the beginning, it was an uphill
battle. “No manufacturer in the United
States would talk to me at first,”
Sheasley said. She couldn’t afford to
fulfill the minimum quantity that every
manufacturer was asking for. And
compounding problems even further
was the fact that no one in the United
States had worked with bamboo
before. Consequently, Sheasley started
e-mailing companies primarily in China.
“The Internet is a wonderful tool,
allowing people like me to do
something like this. I would have never
been able to do this 10 or 15 years
ago,” Sheasley said.
Her persistence paid off. She finally
found a manufacturer that met all of
her requirements and in July of 2009
her natural baby wipes went to market.
As soon as she began showing a profit,
US manufacturers started to call. Now,
although the bamboo for the wipes still
comes from China, the wipes are made
in the USA.
She hopes that one-day bamboo will

is trying to persuade the industry to
grow bamboo in the US. “There is a
huge market in the US for bamboo
right now and it makes sense to have
our own grown here,” Sheasley said.
Bamboo is a rapidly renewable resource
that will save trees, she noted. According
to Sheasley, it may take 40 or 50 years
to harvest tree pulp and bamboo pulp
can be harvested in just two or three
years. “It’s renewable, self sustainable,
doesn’t usually require irrigation and
doesn’t require pesticides,” she said,
adding emphatically, “It’s perfect.”
As Sheasley continues to grow her
business, she also finds time to get
involved with the community. “We love
the Mashpee Chamber’s Christmas
Parade,” Sheasley said. Bum Boosa’s
floats have won top honors in the
parade. But Sheasley credits her mom
for the beautiful costumes that are worn
by the children and participants on the
floats.
Sheasley aims for success whether she is
entering a float in the Christmas parade
or working on her business. In fact, Bum
Boosa has won some distinguished
awards, including Canada’s Green
Parents List for best new baby product
(wipes) in 2010, in 2011 they won
the Mother Approved
Child Tested
Award for best new
baby products, and this year, Bum Boosa
baby wipes were nominated for the
prestigious Cribsie Awards in partnership
with Jessica Alba’s new company, the
Honest Company.

supportive husband, family and friends,
her grass roots company continues to
grow and prosper. She now has three

JOHN’S POND PARK
CONSERvATION AREA
The 317-acre freshwater pond is
surrounded by a 258 acre town
conservation area of abandoned
cranberry bogs, 17 acre Moody
Pond and over 4 miles of walking trails
and bog roads. Seasonal toilet
facilities, picnic tables and grills. Beach
supervised by lifeguards in summer.
From the Mashpee Rotary, take Route
151 past Falmouth town line to right
turn onto Currier Road (just past
County Fairgrounds). Turn right onto
Hooppole Road; follow past Ashumet
Holly Res. 1.2 miles to stop sign at
end of road, then right onto Back
Road through the Otis Trailer Village/
Campground to Town Beach parking
area at end of road.
MASHPEE RIvER WOODLANDS
More than 8 miles of maintained trails
and wood roads through 391 acres of
conservation land along the Mashpee
River. With white pine forests, salt and
fresh water marshes and abandoned
cranberry bogs, this area is popular for
fishing, canoeing and bird watching.
Canoe access to the river is from the
public landing at the end of Mashpee
Neck Road. For Woodlands South:
From the Mashpee rotary, take Route
28 toward Hyannis. Take first right
onto Quinaquisset Avenue, then right
onto Mashpee Neck Road. South
parking area is 1.1 miles on right at
Conservation Area sign. For Woodlands
North: From the Mashpee rotary, take
Rte 28 toward Hyannis, take first right
onto Quinaquisset Ave. Parking area is
off Quinaquisset Ave. on the right. For
Woodlands West: From the Mashpee
rotary, take Great Neck Road South 1.1
miles, turn left on River Road. Park at
end of paved road.
SOUTH MASHPEE PINE BARRENS
Over 300 acres of rare pine barrens,
Atlantic White Cedar swamps, shrub
swamps and mixed forests, providing
a unique nature study. For access to
the 3.8 miles of trails and sand roads,
take Great Neck Road South 1.5 miles
from the Mashpee rotary. Right onto
the dirt road opposite Punkhorn Point
road and Old Dock Lane. Park in open
area on left.
LOWELL HOLLY RESERvATION
Located on a peninsula between
Mashpee and Wakeby Ponds with over
two miles of shore-line and stands of
American Beech, holly, white pines and
rhododendrons. Includes 1.5 miles of
walking trails, picnic tables and small
swimming beach (no lifeguard). From
Route 130, take S. Sandwich Road and
follow to Reservation parking areas on
left. Old parking area is at end of dirt
road on left at Sandwich town line; 0.7
miles (look for “carpe diem” sign). New
parking area is directly on S. Sandwich
Road 0.8 miles (look for “Trustees of
Reservations” sign).
SOUTH CAPE BEACH STATE PARK
In addition to its 3.5 miles of ocean
and bay beaches, sand dunes, coastal
ponds and salt marshes, the park
maintains the 0.8 mile Great Flat Pond
Trail, extending through coastal forests
and marshes. Also over 3 miles of sand
roads for hiking. From the Mashpee
rotary, take Great Neck Road South to
Great Oak Road. Follow to State Park
sign and turn left into park. Meet at
the Town Beach parking area at end
of paved road. Waquoit Bay National
Estuarine Research Reserve, 149
Waquoit Highway, Rte. 28, Falmouth.
Free parking passes are available for
Massachusetts residents ages 62 or
older at the Waquoit Bay Visitor Center.
Good for all MA state beaches and parks.
JEHU POND CONSERvATION AREA
The majority of this 77.6 acre property
was bought in March, 1997 from the
Bufflehead Bay Nominee Trust at the
same time an adjacent 280 acres were
purchased by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife
Service as part of the Mashpee Wildlife
Refuge. Combined properties include
extensive pine/oak woodlands, salt
and freshwater marshes, two islands,
freshwater stream, abandoned
cranberry bogs, at least one vernal
pool and Atlantic white cedar swamps
crossed by 4.27 miles of woods roads
and walking trails. From the Mashpee
rotary, take Great Neck Road South to
Great Oak Rd. Follow 1.3 miles toward
South Cape Beach to Conservation
area sign and parking area on right.
qUASHNET RIvER AREA
A number of town and state agencies
own a total of 440 acres of conservation
lands along the Quashnet River between
the new Mashpee High School on Rte. 151
and Martin Rd., just south of the town
line in Falmouth. In addition to 4.75 miles
of old woods roads on the property, a
new 2.5 mile trail loop has recently been
completed along the river north from
Martin Rd. which offers an opportunity
to view the fascinating trout stream
restoration effort undertaken in recent
years by the local chapter of Trout
Unlimited. Trout fishing is catch-andrelease
only. From the Mashpee rotary,
take Rte. 28 toward Falmouth for 2.1
miles. Right on Martin Rd. Park at dirt
road on right (do not block the gate).
CHILDS RIvER CONSERvATION AREA
From the Mashpee rotary, take Route
151 and turn left onto Old Barnstable
Road. Go 0.6 mile, past Leatherleaf
Lane, to dirt road on left at bottom of
hill. Look for Conservation Commission
sign. Park on side of dirt road.
