The U.S. Soccer Foundation is reaching more players than 

ever before, thanks to the assistance of our partners who are 

supporting soccer’s growth in the United States. 

We are pleased to be part of this “team” and our 2007 Annual 

Report is designed to showcase the integrated effort that enhances 

our activities across the fi eld. We hope that the story of our team 

and its players will inspire you to continue supporting the game 

through the Foundation, the Major Charitable Arm of Soccer in 

the U.S. 

A successful team needs strong players at every position. Like 

many teams, we build from the back, with our Board of Directors 

in goal, providing leadership and protecting us from problems 

that develop in the run of play. Our defenders, the cornerstone 

of everything we do, include the U.S. Soccer Federation and its 

affi liates, the companies in our Partners Resource Center, our 

champions in the media and our Government Relations activities. 

Just as on the fi eld, our midfi elders generate support for our 

activities and help us push forward. Major League Soccer (MLS) 

and its teams are critical members of our Passback network, the 

new Urban Soccer Collaborative is helping us and its members 

share experiences and information about how best to expand the 

game in economically disadvantaged urban areas and our Soccer 

Funders Network promises to provide similar rewards to 

its members. 

The whole purpose of the game is to score goals and show 

results on the fi eld. That’s where our strikers come in. Our program 

grants, fi eld building activities and Passback have increased the 

opportunities for young people to play soccer across the country. 

As on any team, strikers depend not only on the players on the

fi eld with them, but on the “12th man” in the stands — 

you, our donors and supporters. The resources you provide 

go directly — and entirely — into our goal scoring activities, 

since all overhead costs are covered by our endowment.

Annual Grants Program /Striker 

Soccer is known worldwide as The Beautiful Game, 

thanks to its fluid movement and constant action. 

As the Foundation’s activities demonstrate, the game’s 

beauty extends beyond the field. Programs, supported 

by the Foundation, teach children life lessons about the 

value of exercise, teamwork, community and leadership 

along with the joys of the game. 

Annual Grants Program 

Developing Players, Coaches and Referees 

The Annual Grants Program has provided support to 439 

groups in every state of the country, as part of the $45 million the 

Foundation has invested in the growth of soccer. 

Last year, the Foundation focused on providing grants to 

programs that develop players, coaches and referees in economically 

disadvantaged urban areas with populations of 100,000 or 

more. The 30 program grants awarded in 2007 impacted 25 urban 

communities in 17 states and the District of Columbia. 

These grants address a broad spectrum of needs as illustrated 

by the following three grants. 

The Ebony City Soccer Club (ECSC), located in Charleston, 

South Carolina, is using the Foundation’s grant to launch an 

“in-house” youth development league in four sites throughout the 

city. ECSC is the only organization offering youth soccer to these 

inner-city children and hopes that this organized sports program,

The Southern California Youth Soccer Organization’s Interliga

depressed urban areas of Southern California, including Compton,

approximately 65 independent Hispanic leagues, involving more 

than 60,000 youth players, all of whom operate outside the sphere 

of the U.S. Soccer Federation. With the implementation of the 

Interliga Select Program, the stage is set to identify talented youth 

and prepare them to compete at a higher level with increased 

opportunities for success. 

The Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program (BORP) is 

focused on bringing the game of soccer to individuals who would 

not otherwise have access to the sport because of their disabilities. 

The Foundation’s award will be used by BORP to help develop 

a national team of elite athletes to compete internationally; to 

increase local, national and international awareness of the sport; 

and to be a leader in providing equal access for everyone to soccer, 

a sport that continues to unify the world. 

Soccer United Recovery Fund 

Two years removed from the devastating effects of Hurricanes 

Katrina, Rita and Wilma, the Soccer United Recovery Fund continued 

to provide important funding and resources to help rebuild the 

game across the Gulf Coast region. The Foundation established the 

Recovery Fund in September 2005, in partnership with Eurosport 

and other national and regional soccer partners, as a response to 

the immense challenges facing the game throughout the region. 

To date, nearly $600,000 in direct grant support and donated 

equipment has been provided to over 30 local communities from 

south Texas to Florida, including three fi eld projects in Louisiana. 

Thanks to the generous support of more than 1,000 soccer 

enthusiasts and dozens of generous companies, the Recovery Fund 

has touched 14,000 players, coaches and referees across the Gulf 

Coast region.

Share the Equipment. Share the Game! 

Without the proper equipment you can’t get into the game. 

The Passback Program is designed to help meet the soccer uniform 

and equipment needs of all communities, regardless of income, 

gender or location by collecting and distributing new and gently 

used equipment. The grassroots initiative is a joint effort among the 

U.S. Soccer Foundation, Eurosport and Major League Soccer (MLS). 

This summer the Foundation, along with presenting sponsor 

Western Union, organized a series of soccer skills clinics for urban 

Hispanic youth across the country. The 2007 Passback Tour 

reached approximately 1,000 children in eight cities — Chicago, 

Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, New York 

and Washington, D.C. The clinics were run by professional 

players, including several MLS stars, and local youth coaches. 

Each participant received a new soccer ball (donated by SCORE 

American Soccer Company) and a jersey (donated by Jerzees). The 

Foundation’s long-time partner, Eurosport, provided logistical 

support and raffl ed off prizes at many of the clinics. The 2007 Tour 

was a fantastic success — look for the 2008 Tour coming to a city

Individual “Passback Stars” continued to organize collection 

events in their local community. The Foundation encourages 

boys and girls to become Stars by collecting a minimum of 

250 pieces of soccer equipment for children in need in their 

community. Eighteen-year-old Tanner King, of Houston, Texas, 

had a particularly strong impact on his community. King, one of 

81 young people across the country to become a Passback Star this 

year collected 2,118 pieces of equipment for distribution to local 

children as part of an Eagle Scout project.

The Passback Program had another banner year in 2007, 

including the following accomplishments: 

● 131,951 pieces of equipment collected and distributed. 

● 41,397 pieces of equipment donated by Major League 

Soccer fans during the Foundation’s MLS Passback 

Challenge. 

● With the support of Eurosport, 38,977 pieces of 

equipment collected and distributed to groups in the 

United States and overseas. 

● 81 Passback Stars collected and distributed a total of 

28,462 pieces of equipment. 

● 14,784 pieces of equipment collected at 32 youth 

soccer tournaments around the country. 

● Recognition of the LA Galaxy as the 2007 MLS “Team 

Humanitarian of the Year” for leading all teams in 

Passback collections with 8,331 pieces.

Field Grants 

Building Soccer … One Field at a Time. 

Many U.S. cities lack suitable places for sports and 

recreation. Field Grants from the Foundation help provide 

young people, especially inner city children, with more places 

and opportunities to play The Beautiful Game. 

The Foundation awards three types of grants supporting 

the construction and improvement of soccer fi elds. All 

Conditions Fields (ACF) Grants, awarded through the 

Foundation’s partnership with NikeGO, support the 

development of synthetic grass fi elds. Field Enhancement 

Grants improve fi elds by adding new goals, irrigation and/or 

lighting. Planning Grants provide funding assistance to develop 

a master plan for proposed fi eld projects through the support 

of Foundation partner Clough Harbour Sports. 

In addition, the Foundation published The Soccer Field 

Handbook in 2007, with the assistance of Soccer America. 

The Handbook is a comprehensive resource on all things 

related to the development of soccer fi elds in your community, 

from getting local political approval to deciding whether to use 

synthetic or natural grass.

Striker/Field Grants 

This year, the Foundation awarded field grants to 26 

organizations to help provide more places to play the game 

of soccer. 

In 2007, the Foundation and its Partners joined several 

Grantees in celebrating the grand opening of new All 

Conditions Fields. 

The Foundation and Nike celebrated the opening of a worldclass 

FieldTurf mini soccer field at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater 

Washington — Robert V. Murray Clubhouse #11 (see cover photo) 

in southeast Washington, D.C. The new field is a significant 

improvement over the often-flooded parking lot it replaced. Soccer 

star Freddy Adu joined the dedication festivities and led a soccer 

clinic for local children to inaugurate the facility. 

The City of Sacramento debuted its first synthetic soccer field 

with a festival including a 6-on-6 tournament, soccer clinics and a 

game among semi-professional players. Located in East Sacramento 

as part of the new Granite Regional Park Complex, the FieldTurf 

field provides new opportunities for children and adults to play the 

Beautiful Game on a state-of-the-art, all-weather field. 

An ACF Grant supported the development of a new FieldTurf 

training field at the University of Portland’s Clive Charles Soccer 

Complex. The complex honors the legacy of the late Charles, who 

coached the University of Portland Men’s and Women’s squads 

until 2002. The field is a resource for the University teams and 

serves youth soccer programs in the Portland community.

Successful goal scorers have teammates who can get 

them the ball in the right position. Our “midfielders” 

help us reach the organizations working to further the 

Foundation’s mission. 

Major League Soccer 

Playing with the Pros 

The Foundation has been a major partner of MLS for more than 

a decade. The Foundation and the League have a shared history, 

tracing back to the 1994 FIFA Men’s World Cup, and a common 

vision for the future, growing the game of soccer in the United 

States. MLS W.O.R.K.S. (the charitable arm of MLS), the League 

and its players are instrumental in supporting the Foundation’s 

efforts. 

The Foundation is an MLS Charity of Choice and the recipient 

of all player fines at the end of each season. All of these funds 

go into the annual grants pool. The MLS Players’ Award grants 

are provided annually in recognition of this contribution. The 

recipients are selected by the Foundation, in partnership with the 

MLS Players Union and those Union members chosen by their 

teams as “U.S. Soccer Foundation Humanitarians of the Year.” 

In 2007, the National Sports Center for the Disabled in Denver, 

the United Neighborhood Organization in Chicago and the 

Southern California Youth Soccer Organization in Los Angeles were 

designated as “MLS Players Award Grantees.” The grants provided 

equipment for thousands of players, coaches and referees touched 

by these organizations. 

The Foundation further strengthened its partnership with 

the League’s players through a grant to the MLS Players Union.

This three-year award will help offset expenses associated with 

launching the Union’s new Career Development Program, 

designed to help prepare MLS players for life after their playing 

career. One aspect of the program is to match players with 

coaching opportunities across the country. 

MLS also promotes the Foundation’s signature Passback 

Program through highly visible field boards at stadiums and public 

service announcements airing during televised games. A Passback 

Spokesperson, designated by each MLS team, helps increase 

awareness and encourages donations to the program.

The Foundation works to bring together diverse organizations 

supporting the growth of soccer. 

Urban Soccer Collaborative 

The Urban Soccer Collaborative extends the Foundation’s 

emphasis on economically disadvantaged urban areas beyond 

the awarding of individual grants. The Foundation organized 

the inaugural meeting of the Collaborative last year, laying the 

groundwork for networking and partnership opportunities among 

urban soccer programs nationwide. The Collaborative is open to 

any organization working to increase playing opportunities for 

inner-city children. 

This year, the Foundation launched the online home of the 

Urban Soccer Collaborative. Current members, or those interested 

in creating a new program, may now access best practices, success 

stories and more drawn from decades of experience in urban 

soccer programming. The website highlights program success 

stories, including reducing peer conflict among youth, developing 

talent for the Olympic Development Program and opening the 

door to soccer scholarships from private high schools and colleges.

The Foundation spearheaded the establishment of the Soccer 

Funders Network with the goal of connecting urban soccer 

organizations with soccer funders, and to provide a forum for 

members to share best practices and develop strategies for 

collaboration. 

The Soccer Funders Network, comprised of both public and 

private soccer charities, supports the growth of soccer, with a 

specific focus on serving children in economically disadvantaged 

rural and urban communities across the country. 

Through the Foundation website, the Funders Network 

provides an online resource for soccer clubs, teams and 

organizations seeking support. As the Network grows we hope it 

will encourage cooperation among soccer organizations to increase 

support for at-risk children, families and communities.

backline of partners that support our efforts to expand 

the game to diverse communities across the country

Government Relations 

Passion in Action 

The Foundation’s Washington, D.C., location affords unique 

access to federal decision makers and global representatives who 

have a passion for the game and the benefi ts that come from 

playing it. The Foundation, and the game as a whole, is fortunate 

to enjoy the continued cooperation of key public leaders. 

The Foundation recently completed a major grant project 

supported by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban 

Development enabling the construction of synthetic grass fi elds 

in central Los Angeles and Jacksonville, Florida, and the creation 

of soccer programs in the District of Columbia and rural eastern 

Kentucky. These four grants support soccer programs engaging 

more than 3,000 young people each year. 

Working with the U.S. Soccer Federation, the Foundation 

provided the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational 

and Cultural Affairs with technical assistance and equipment for 

soccer exchanges in Africa and Asia, such as hosting Awista Ayub, 

founder of the Afghan Youth Sports Exchange, and a delegation 

of pioneering Afghani women (See photo at right). During their 

American odyssey, the group enjoyed exposure to all levels of 

organized soccer — including attending a clinic hosted by the

soccer coaching certifi cations before returning home to expand the 

opportunities for girls in Afghanistan. 

With the arrival of the 110th Congress in January, the 

Foundation and the new leadership of the Congressional Soccer 

Caucus cheered the expansion of the Caucus’ membership to a 

record high of nearly 40 members. The bipartisan group supports 

legislation, activities and events that promote the game. Some 

important issues being advanced by the Soccer Caucus include: 

● Addressing the need for more safe places to play soccer; 

● Encouraging public-private partnerships that utilize soccer to 

provide at-risk youth with structured after-school activities; 

● Promoting soccer as a lifelong healthy physical activity; and 

● Supporting the preservation of Title IX.

Attention Soccer Supporters! 

The Foundation’s media outreach has increased the visibility of 

our organization, our Grantees and our Partners. The added visibility 

attracts new donors, partners and organizations in need of the 

Foundation’s support. 

Fox Soccer Channel produced and aired the Foundation’s 2007 

Public Service Announcement and created a segment about the 

grand opening of the mini field in Washington, D.C. HDNet also 

aired the Foundation’s PSA during its MLS coverage. 

An official supporter of the Passback Program, Comcast 

SportsNet produced a 30-second segment featuring several D.C. 

United stars. The network aired the spot in the greater Washington, 

D.C., region during the 2007 MLS season to help D.C. United and 

the Foundation collect equipment during the club’s home soccer 

matches. 

The Inter-American Development Bank, the Council of the 

Americas, the Foundation and GolTV hosted a reception, auction 

and viewing party around Copa America 2007. The event raised 

awareness of soccer and furthered the Foundation’s efforts to bring 

soccer programs to at-risk Hispanic youth in the nation’s capital. 

Proceeds from the event benefited the Latin American Youth Center’s 

after-school soccer program for low-income Hispanic youth, 

ages 6–18, in Washington, D.C.

Mobilizing Soccer Communities in the United States 

The United States soccer community includes a wide range 

of organizations and individuals working together to further 

the game. From grassroots community activism to top-fl ight 

international competitions, all organizations play their part. 

In 1994, the FIFA World Cup, the world’s most popular 

tournament, came to America. The U.S. Soccer Federation hosted 

and organized the festivities, netting a signifi cant surplus. To 

manage those funds, the Federation established the U.S. Soccer 

Foundation in 1995. In the years that have followed the Federation 

and the Foundation have collaborated on a number of projects. 

Recently, the Foundation worked with the Federation to raise funds 

for the U.S. Soccer National Training Center at the Home Depot 

Center and for the Glenn “Mooch” Myernick Memorial Fund in 

support of urban soccer initiatives (see page 19). 

In 2007, the Foundation awarded a grant to the U.S. Adult 

Soccer Association to support the implementation of a national 

online registration system that will provide USASA members with 

a centralized process to register players, track payments and 

communicate with teams and leagues. Once launched, the USASA 

will be the fi rst national organization member of the U.S. Soccer 

Federation with the ability to register players at the local level while 

simultaneously collecting player demographic information across 

the country. 

Defender/Mobilizing Soccer Communities 

PWSI 

Soccer is the number one youth participation sport in within 

the United States and the Foundation enjoys a close working 

relationship with U.S. Youth Soccer (USYS), American Youth 

Soccer Organization and the Soccer Association for Youth . The 

organizations share similar beliefs about the benefi ts that soccer 

offers to youth and families in communities across the country. In 

September, the Foundation worked with USYS to promote Youth 

Soccer Month and educate the public about the joys, rewards and 

benefi ts of youth soccer.

Remembering Friends of the Game 

Much of the Foundation’s work supports the next generation of 

soccer stars, but we follow in the footsteps of those who have come 

before us. The United States soccer community lost some icons this 

year. These individuals played an integral role in the growth of the 

game of soccer in the United States and they will be sorely missed. 

The Foundation asks you to join us in remembering and celebrating 

the following friends of soccer whom we lost during the past year. 

JOHN GILMAN was the Chief Executive Officer of FieldTurf Inc. 

and worldwide CEO of the sports division of FieldTurf Tarkett. A 

professional football player and coach with the Canadian Football 

League’s Montreal Alouettes in the 1960s, Gilman built FieldTurf 

Tarkett into the largest entity in the sports surfacing industry and 

ensured that the company conducted extensive research and development 

to improve the quality and longevity of FieldTurf in its 

application across a variety of sports. FieldTurf has been a long-time 

supporter of the Foundation. 

LAMAR HUNT was an early investor in the North American Soccer 

League and Major League Soccer. The Hunt Sports Group operates 

FC Dallas, the Columbus Crew, and, until 2006, ran the Kansas City 

Wizards. For his efforts to build soccer in the United States, Hunt was 

inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame, awarded the National 

Soccer Medal of Honor and received the MLS Commissioner’s 

Award. In 1999 The U.S. Soccer Federation’s National Championship 

was renamed the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Hunt also received the 

Foundation’s first “Lifetime Achievement Award” in 2005. 

GLENN “MOOCH” MYERNICK was an assistant coach on the U.S. 

Men’s National Team in the last two World Cups. He also coached 

the U.S. Under-23 and Under-17 Men’s National Teams and MLS’s 

Colorado Rapids. As a player, Myernick suited up for the National

Moment Of Silence 

Team and U.S. Olympic Team, and starred in the North American 

Soccer League. The Foundation’s Mooch Myernick Fund, established 

at the request of the Myernick family, has raised more than $250,000 

for metropolitan soccer clubs and organizations to increase the number 

of urban children playing the sport. 

GINO PARIANI was a member of the 1950 U.S. World Cup team 

and the 1948 U.S. Olympic squad. He played for the mostly amateur 

U.S. squad in its shocking 1-0 defeat of England at the 1950 World 

Cup in Brazil. The story of the 1950 team was recounted in the 2005 

film, “The Game of Their Lives.” Pariani is a member of the National 

Soccer Hall of Fame. 

PAUL TOBIN was the founder of Official Sports International 

(OSI), which outfits amateur and professional soccer referees around 

the world. OSI has served as the exclusive supplier of U.S. Soccer 

Federation referee apparel and accessories since 1998, and the 

company also supplies uniforms to referees in the English Premier 

League. 

DAVID VANOLE was a U.S. Men’s National Team player and 

coach. The goalkeeper led UCLA to an NCAA championship, played 

in the American Professional Soccer League and helped the U.S. 

squad during the 1988 Olympics and its qualification for the 1990 

World Cup. Vanole served as an assistant coach to college, professional 

and U.S. National teams. In consultation with the Vanole family, 

the Foundation established the David Charles Vanole Memorial 

Fund to help create and sustain soccer opportunities for underserved 

urban children, with an emphasis on communities in Southern California.

The Foundation takes great pride in the fact that 100 percent of 

every dollar donated goes directly into one of its programs. The 

Foundation’s strictly controlled overhead costs are covered by earnings 

on its endowment. This means that every dollar of your gift, to 

the Major Charitable Arm of Soccer, is utilized to help build the sport. 

Since its creation, the Foundation has awarded more than 

$45 million in grants, financial support and loans to help develop 

coaches, players and referees, especially those in economically 

disadvantaged urban areas. 

The Foundation has received the Independent Charities of 

America “Best in America” Seal of Excellence. This distinction is 

awarded to organizations that have, upon rigorous independent
