Wylde at Merced College
Merced College Art Gallery has recently opened
their doors to the —Mixed Media“ of Nanette Wylde.
Over several years, Wylde‘s projects interact media
as art, responding to the cultural environments
around her. Teaching at Chico State, Wylde has
advanced and made a mark on the world of photography
as we know it, using mind, body, soul, and time,
she generates an unique outlook on life. Her work
tells stories that illuminates concerns and perspectives
of life, an abstract exploration of energy, intellect,
and emotion, and are flavored with bits of
humor.
Her work is part of the process she goes through to
understand
the world she
lives in. She
finds news
and media
confusing,
and wants to
gain some
understanding
of what it is
really about,
and converts
that to what
she thinks it
Hateful
really is
about. Wylde says that —I don‘t know what you
perceive as the American response to censorship. I
guess when I think of censorship here I think of
Puritan values, which basically are not open to
difference. I am
observing that American
media is big on
fear and a spectacle
and small on ”real‘
communication.“
Society constantly
looks to media for
information and
knowledge (whether
the information is
factual or just good
gossip). It is important
to say that
Wylde‘s approach is
further addressing the
idea that media only
Sensitive
distributes one-way communication. In this respect, it
can be said that ideas and comments are not just one
person, but the voices of many people.
