Get the look!
We asked Alain Pinon, co-owner and stylist of
the Salon A.K.S on prestigious 5th Avenue in
NYC how to get our cover look:
1 After towel drying, apply 2 snowball-sized amounts of Phyto
Professional Intense Volume Mousse. This will help protect hair from
humidity.
2 Apply 2- 3 drops of Phytolisse smoothing serum to create beautiful
shine. Work the serum from mid-length to ends, then slowly work your
way toward the roots.
3 Start blow drying from the back of the head to the top. You’ll get more
lift at the root.
4 With a Medium A.K.S Silk Brush, work the hair firmly without
stressing it.
5 Work in 2-inch diagonal sections as you work the sides. The handle
of the brush should point between the mirror & the floor to insure the
correct angle.
6 Work with a diagonal section on top in a brick layer fashion, and move
from the crown forward. This will control the roots and the volume on
top. Each section needs to cool down about 15 seconds to set the lift.
7 Work the bangs, moving down and forward. Do not lift at the root as
bangs could become too round and too full.
8 To finish, start from the front of the head, working your way back
using a 1.5 inch barrel iron (sections should be 1.5 to 2 inches diagonally
working away from the face.)
9 When all hair is down, mix 2 drops of Phytolisse with a pea-sized
amount of Phyto Professional Glossing Cream. Mix well in your hands,
then add a touch of water to create a light paste.
10 Run your fingers lightly through the hair and sculpt the waves that
you created with the Iron.
11 Smooth the remainder of the paste you created over your bangs to
kick up the shine and add a touch of texture.
Et voila! For more information
n Welcome n
Spring has Sprung!
As I write this letter, it’s the first warm day here in NYC,
and everyone in the office has Spring Fever. However
it was a very exciting winter for us and we’re happy to
share it all with you.
I was lucky enough to travel around the country and
meet some of our amazingly talented salon owners
and stylists, all while participating in two star-studded
events: the Sundance Film Festival and the Oscars.
It was a blast watching VIPs and celebs alike get
perfectly primped with PHYTO. And I thoroughly
enjoyed interviewing Laura Dolan, one of our newest
l’espace phyto salons, Terrence Michael.
Yet in the spirit of spring, we couldn’t help but give you
tips about our favorite city -- Paris! You’ll also learn
more about our new product launches, spring fashion
shows and a deliciously delectable editorial treat by
salon owner and colorist Jenna Rabideau.
Lastly, I’m happy to introduce Ron’s Corner. Ron
Williams is our PhytoSpecific guru and answers some
of your most pressing questions.
Please enjoy this issue. If you have any comments,
stories or photos to share, please write me at
Paul Jean
Paul Jean’s American professional career began in 1996 in
California, as an apprentice to Jose Eber at his eponymous
Beverly Hills salon. Paul Jean shortly opened his own private
studio on the famed Robertson Boulevard, where he has
honed and perfected his trademark shaggy cuts, natural
color and styling techniques. Paul Jean’s passion is working
with the hair’s natural pigments and movements to create
organic, soft-looking texture. He believes that color should
be done within a couple of shades of the hair’s natural color,
and that synthetic pigments should only be introduced when
necessary. His color philosophy is to "look at your childhood
pictures and get your hair to look as if it was naturally perfect
and untouched."
Prep towel-dried hair by spraying
Phytovolume Actif Volumizing Spray at
the roots to add some lift.
Use equal parts Phyto 7 Daily Hydrating
Botanical Cream and Phyto Professional
Glossing Cream (about a pea size drop
of each) and emulsify the combination by
rubbing your palms together. Run them
through your hair all the way through the
ends. This builds in extra moisture and
shine.
After drying your hair, use a 3/4" curling
rod to curl sections about 1” square.
Concentrate on getting lift at the base/
root area.
Start by applying Phyto Professional Intense Volume Mousse before
blow drying.
Set hair using a 3/4-inch barrel curling iron and then pin curls.
Once the pin curls are released, brush out hair and give the hair
a deep side part.
Finish with Phytolaque Soie for a soft hold.
When all your hair is curled, give the hair
a light misting with Phyto Professional
Workable Holding Spray. Then give it a
quick comb with your fingers.
Section a small top section around the bang
area, then pull the rest of your hair back
into a ponytail.
After securing the ponytail with an elastic,
release the top section and, maintaining
lift, part it slightly to the side. Use any
remaining length from the top section to
wrap around and conceal the elastic at the
base of the ponytail.

Step by step:
Step 1 – Spray Phytovolume Actif volumizing spray to
Step 2 – Blow dry. (Product is heat activated.)
Step 3 – Side part hair, leaving enough to create (or give the
Step 4 – Pull hair back into a low pony, then twist hair to
create an easy chignon. Pin.
Step 5 – For bang: Spray Phytolaque soie light hairspray
TIMELESS ELEGANCE:
THE PERFECT BLOWOUT
Phyto Introduces Phytolisse Shampoo and Mask
Because sleek hair is synonymous with femininity and glamour, the
blowout continues to be a classic style choice.
wWomen are forever seeking ways to tame their curly, frizzy
and unruly hair. To achieve a smooth look, Phyto introduces
Phytolisse Shampoo and Phytolisse Mask, an innovative
program to combat frizz and achieve a perfect blowout.
The Science of the Perfect Blowout
The physiology of curly hair makes it tricky to smooth. The
curve of the hair root, shape of the hair shaft and configuration
of its keratin fibers play a role in its natural pattern.
What’s the Phyto prescription for the perfect blowout? Since
hydration is the key to an effective, long-lasting blowout,
Phytolisse Shampoo and Phytolisse Mask form a coating
around the hair fiber. Pine pulp derivative protects hair, shielding
it from humidity.
When dry, hair can lengthen by 20 to 30%, but upon contact
with water, this lengthening can reach over 50%. A study carried
out on strands of hair made it possible to evaluate the humidity
resistance factor of the hair depending on the shampoo system
used. The humidity resistance factor of hair treated with pine
pulp derivative was clearly superior to that of hair treated with
other systems.
In addition, pine pulp helps detangle and soften hair to
ensure manageability without building up or weighing hair
down. Phytolissse Shampoo also contains Hibiscus flower:
its organic acids have the ability to smooth the hair surface,
allowing for incomparable shine. Another key ingredient is
Calendula flower, which hydrates and softens, helping to
straighten hair for 72 hours.
Follow Phytolisse Shampoo application with Phytolisse Mask,
which contains pine pulp extract, red and brown algae and
nourishing apricot kernel oil.
These innovative products complete Phyto’s best-selling antifrizz
line of Phytodéfrisant: heat-activated botanical hair
relaxing balm with ferula, sage, horseradish and chamomile
8 PHYTO Magazine | Spring 2011
and Phytolisse finishing serum with althea extract (derived
from the mallow plant.)
For a smooth and sleek blowout,
Phyto recommends:
Step 1 – Shampoo with NEW Phytolisse shampoo.
Step 2 – Condition with NEW Phytolisse mask.
Step 3 – Style with Phytodéfrisant heat-activated botanical relaxing
balm.
Apply to wet or towel-dried hair. Distribute evenly with a widetooth
comb. Blow dry.
Step 4 – Finish with Phytolisse finishing serum.
Apply to towel-dried hair and throughout the day to fight frizz.

PHYTO: Laura, Congratulations on your newly renovated
salon. It’s beautiful! You have been in the Ft. Myers area for
quite some time. Where did you begin your career?
LD: In 1975, I was trained by mentors who studied under
Christopher Brooker and Annie Humphries at Vidal Sassoon’s
London Academy.
PHYTO: What is your greatest accomplishment?
LD: Opening my own successful salon (as a single, widowed
mother of two) and retaining most of my core staff for over
20 years.
PHYTO: Where do you draw your inspiration from?
LD: Mainly from live, hands-on, in-salon training classes,
print media and various technology outlets such as internet
webinars highlighting current trends in fashion and hair.
PHYTO: What’s a beauty must-have?
LD: A professional blow-dryer (we use the Twin Turbo series)
and of course my Phyto Products to protect the hair!
PHTYO: Any favorite Phyto products?
LD: I love the entire new Phytolisse line as well as the
Phytodensium line. My personal favorites are Phytodéfrisant
and Phytodensium serum.
PHYTO: You are also one of the first Subtil exclusive salons
in the US. Do you enjoying working with the color?
LD: We are growing with the color line and continuing to
learn about the various capabilities. We have a growing
clientele who are searching for the PPDR and ammonia
free coloring systems that Subtil caters to.
PHYTO: What artists and/or hair stylists do you most
admire?
LD: Vidal Sassoon, Annie Humphries, Tim Hartley, Stacey
Broughton and Mark Hayes.
PHYTO: Any challenges you are facing as a salon owner
in this market?
LD: With any local salon, diversion is always a challenge,
staying cutting edge and absorbing price increases without
passing them off to the client.
PHYTO: What is the most requested hair cut in the
salon?
LD: Variations of the bob! This classic cut will continue to
be fashionable--it’s the most timeless haircut.
How to Best Experience Paris
Paris is a walking city, but that’s not the only way to get around.
The Bateaux Mouches (excursion boats) are a great way to
get the big picture, especially in warm weather. The Bateaux
Mouches take you past memorable landmarks, making it a
relaxing, breathtaking way to enjoy a beautiful evening.
During the day, the Vélib* are the best way to get around.
These bicycles can be rented hourly, daily, weekly, or
monthly, and you’ll find a station every 300 meters. You
can see much more than via Metro or on foot, and you can
hop on and off anytime.
* Cycling Tip: Vélib’s first 30 minutes are free, so if you’re going
a short distance, you won’t pay a penny!
14 PHYTO Magazine | Spring 2011
La pause café
You’re guaranteed a delicious espresso or café au lait at
any of hundreds of cafés, paired with a people-watching
session. Cafés move tables outdoors come spring; chairs
face the street, making conditions perfect for watching
the world go by.
We suggest Café de Flore or Les Deux Magots. These
legendary cafés in Saint Germain des Prés have been in
business since the 19th century and are famed for their
intellectual clientele. What better way to experience
la culture française than to sip coffee where Jean-
Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir used to meet for
philosophical discussions?

Le quatre-heures, or Goûter
This afternoon break typically involves a pâtisserie and tea or
coffee. Most cafés serve a classic macaron, but if you’re looking
for a unique snack, we have some ideas. Angelina is a tea
room on the Rue de Rivoli, right across from le Jardin des
Tuileries, and was once a favorite among the likes of Audrey
Hepburn and Coco Chanel. It is famous for its decadent hot
chocolate and its house special gâteau, the Mont-Blanc. The
gilded décor makes you believe you’ve stepped back into la
Belle Epoque. Or try the famous macarons from Ladurée. You
can get cozy in the lavish tea room if it rains, but on a sunny
day, order your macarons à emporter, add a great book, and
head to a verdant park. Suggestions: the quiet garden behind
Notre Dame Cathedral, the Jardin des Tuileries, or the
Jardin du Luxembourg.
* Goûter Tip: Cafés, gardens and park benches can also be
fun and informal places to try out your French language skills.
Don’t be shy!
Cuisine bourgeoise
Enjoy the weather and the sights by packing a lunch and having
a pique-nique. Any garden will provide an agreeable setting,
but we like the Champ de Mars, facing the Eiffel Tower, the
scenic Canal Saint Martin or any bench along the Seine. A
corner brasserie is also great for an outdoor lunch of a melted
goat cheese salad, savory crepes or a steak frites.
For dinner, we like these restaurants for outstanding,
traditional French food and wine: Chez Georges is a vieille
France-style, cozy bistro near the Bourse that serves delicious
cuisine bourgeoisie (comfort food). For more glamour, try La
Fontaine Gaillon, owned by Gérard Depardieu. The food and
wine are decadent, and it offers a magical terrasse. Finally,
Le Grand Colbert is the fabulous restaurant where Diane
Keaton and Jack Nicholson dined in the film Something’s
Gotta Give. Its star power plus delicious brasserie-style fare
make for a memorable meal.
* Dining Tip: Don’t be a disappointed walk-in, turned away or
sitting near the kitchen door! Most fine dining requires a reservation,
which can be done well in advance, often via the Internet. Par
example: http://www.legrandcolbert.fr (whose site has English and
French portals.)
La culture Française
One of the main reasons we love Paris is its culture and
museums. You can’t miss le Louvre and le Musée d’Orsay.
Also plan a visit to le Centre Pompidou (try the Georges
restaurant for its panoramic view), le Musée Rodin, and le
Grand Palais . . .
Other treasures that are off the beaten path but just as
impressive, and possibly more charming include: le Musée de
la Mode et du Textile (the museum of fashion and textiles),
right next to the Louvre; Musée Nissim de Camondo, a
sumptuous private home from the early twentieth century;
the impressive Opéra Garnier, which is open during the
day; le Musée du Quai Branly, featuring indigenous art
and culture from Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas;
le Musée Jacquemart-André, which showcases the private
art collection of Édouard André and Nélie Jacquemart, and
houses a charming restaurant; le Petit Palais with its free,
gem of an exhibit and ‘secret’ café with a lovely terrasse, and
l’Institut du Monde Arabe. Finally, there is l’Espace Dali,
concealed at the top of Montmartre, where you can enjoy
the view, la Place du Tertre with its plein air painters, and
the delightful cobblestone streets surrounding it!
* Culture Tip: Saturday, May 14 th is the Nuit des Musées
(Night of the Museums): Museums are open and free from
6pm until midnight.
Shopping
As Paris is a world fashion capital, you’ll adore all the shopping
it offers. The Marais is full of little vintage boutique gems, and
is a charming neighborhood to explore.
For chic, high-end shopping, head to the Rue Saint Honoré
and the Place Vendôme, home to luxury boutiques such as
Cartier and Chanel. From there, head to the Rue du Boulevard
Saint Honoré for more luxe; you’ll find one of two exclusive
Caron boutiques.
To experience the Parisian equivalent of a department store,
head to the Boulevard Haussmann and stop by le Printemps
and les Galeries Lafayette.
Finally, it’s off to the inevitable Champs Elysées, where you’ll a
dream world of shopping and restaurants. Stroll the boulevard
toward la Place de la Concorde to savor the Grand and Petit
Palais, the landmark Pont Alexandre III and la Place de la
Concorde’s famed monuments, including its fountains and the
Obelisk of Luxor, and the Jardin des Tuileries.
* Beauty Tip: Stop by the Caron boutique located at 34, Avenue
Montaigne, right off the Champs Elysées; book a haircut and
treatment at the Patrick Alès salon, located behind the Grand
Palais: http://www.beautecoiffurepatrickales.com/contact.
Plan a Day Trip
While it is doubtful that you would ever tire of Paris, it’s nice
to get away from the bustle for a day in order to gain a deeper
understanding of French culture.
Les Puces de Vanves, one of the largest antique flea markets in
Paris, is located on the outskirts of the city. It is a great place to
spend a morning or afternoon hunting for that singular trinket,
gift or souvenir.
Among France’s priceless treasures are its splendid castles; the
Ile-de-France region is home to some of the most celebrated
and historic examples. Accessible by train, within two hours
of the city, visit the Palace of Versailles, the Vaux le Vicomte
castle, the Fontainebleau castle.
If you yearn for even more gorgeous gardens, visit Monet’s
Giverny. If you visit Musée de l’Orangerie on le Place de la
Concorde before your trip, you’ll delight in Giverny’s quiet
splendor even more.
And then? It’s back to Paris, the ancient city that never grows old.
n PhytoSpecific n
Q. I’ve been relaxing my hair with a lye-based relaxer
product for years. Can I use the PhytoSpecific relaxer
for my next re-touch? I have medium length hair
that grows out tightly coiled. I usually have my hair
relaxed at the salon.
A. The PhytoSpecific relaxer is a revolutionary egg and plant
based (soy and shiitake mushroom extract) non-lye hair
relaxer system that permanently and gently relaxes all curly
textures. Our relaxer is compatible with most lye and non–lye
based relaxers. However, have your stylist check the active
ingredients in your current hair relaxer before using.
You can use the PhytoSpecific relaxer for your re-touch if
the active ingredient is not ammonium thioglycolate. I do
however encourage your stylist to perform a strand test before
he/she attempts a complete retouch application. Welcome to
the world of plant-based beauty care!
Ron’s Corner
Our PhytoSpecific go-to guy, Ron Williams,
shares some of the most frequently asked
questions (and answers!) about curly, frizzy
and relaxed hair. You can also find Ron
tending to clients at Phyto Universe in NYC.

Q. Can I relax my hair with the PhytoSpecific relaxer
and color my hair the same day?
A. Sure you can! However, we only recommend that you use
semi-permanent hair color. We do not recommend that you
use demi or permanent hair color the same day you relax
your hair as to these products may cause breakage and/or
excess dehydration. You can however wait one week with
one shampoo and then color your hair with these products.
Please note that our product is not compatible with any
henna hair color product.
Q. Help! During the winter months my curly textured
hair becomes very dry and I notice more breakage.
My hair also does not feel soft and styling becomes
a hassle. What products in the PhytoSpecific line
should I use?
A. This is a common problem for curly textured hair. First,
most curly, textured hair is dry naturally and the winter
months tend to make this hair type ultra-dry. Hair feels
rough, lacks sheen, and is prone to breakage therefore
styling becomes a task. I recommend that you increase
the hydration and nourishment levels in your hair. Begin
your hair care regimen with our pre-Shampoo Revitalizing
Treatment Oil, shampoo with our Intense Nutrition
Shampoo and follow with Intense Nutrition Mask. To
replenish moisture and aide in detangling use Integral
Hydrating Mist and for daily styling try a dime size amount
of our Nourishing Styling Crème with Shea Butter. Use this
product daily and you should notice a marked decrease in
breakage and increase softness. Enjoy!
The Dessert Collection from Jenna Rabideau of Halo
Salon and Color Lab in Fort Worth, TX was inspired
by a classic French pastry shop using Subtil professional
hair color. Ethereal backgrounds are reminiscent
of spun sugar or dessert cups.
Meringue
“My team and I were trying to create
the texture of meringue using warm
shades of blonde coupled with a
beautiful swirling up-style. -Jenna Rabideau
Get the look!
Color:
• Start with very faded out whitish blonde ends and
about 2 inches of level 7 new growth.
• Section off the top of the head. Use Subtil Shine Paste
Lightener with 30 volume as a highlight and 8.30 with 10
volume. Alternate formulas by slicing panels diagonally
through the top section.
• Use 9.13 on the new growth with 20 volume and add a
1 inch ribbon of yellow to the mixture and pull it through
to the ends.
• Processing time: 35 minutes.
Styling:
• Spray a generous amount of Phytovolume Actif to
towel dried hair and comb through.
• Apply one pump of Phytolisse Shine Serum. Power dry
the hair until 80% dry.
• Section hair into 5 sections. Using a medium sized
round brush, dry each section rolling hair to the base.
• When dry, remove brush and re-roll around fingers and
secure with clip to cool. Move on to next section and
repeat until all hair is rolled and secured.
• Use an iron to create wave in fringe area.
• Release all hair and brush into place.
• Divide hair into 7 or 8 equal sized ponytails.
• Roll each section around fingers and secure to nape
with bobby pins.
Subtil Developer from the roots to about 4 inches
from the ends.
the bottom 4 inches to lift to a dark yellow.
• Shampoo hair and then mix rouge reflects
6.66 with 7.60 with 5 inches of basic red with 10
volume and tone ends of hair for about 15 minutes
to give it that vibrant cherry red.
Styling:
• Apply a dollop of Phyto Professional Wet Styling
Gel cocktailed with a pump of Phytolisse Shine
Serum to towel dried hair from roots to ends.
• Section hair into 4 or 5 sections.
• Beginning in back, using a larger sized brush,
round brush hair until dry.
Professional Shine Defining Wax.
“We wanted to duplicate the
rich dark chocolate of the
dessert. Of course it wouldn’t
be black forest cake without
the cherry on top, or in this
case on the bottom.
