Welcome to our 99 th Opening.
Just one more year and we will be 100 years old,
the best is yet to come. The opening celebrations
at each club are getting bigger and better each
year. We are pleased that you have chosen to attend
our weekend of fun at “Kongo on the Kreek.”
We will do everything we can to make you feel welcome
and a part of the festivities. We hope you
brought your dancing shoes and decorations for
your boat. This will be a great day seeing all of our
friends and making new acquaintances. I personally
have a hard time counting all the great friends
we have found by visiting the other great clubs
around the Bay.
All of the clubs around The Bay and Delaware River
are like one great family that choose to get together
for weekend parties at different locations.
Maryland Yacht Club Officers, Board of Directors,
Executive Committee, Manager, volunteers, and
staff wish you a great weekend.
Remember our motto coined by Kevin Coleman our
Vice Commodore, “if you are at Maryland Yacht
Club and you are not having fun, you better check
your pulse.”
To Princess Katie, we wish you the best and the
same to all of the Club Princesses competing in the
Queen’s Pageant.
From the twin helms of “Slainte Maher” (our boat)
my wife CommoDoris and I wish all of you a safe
and happy boating season.
the Bay's Yacht Clubs and realize how fortunate
we are to be parts of the Chesapeake
the visiting clubs sharing in the
of our club is to promote yachting,
-Thank you Queen Lacie for serving your club
and ultimately, the whole Chesapeake Bay so
well.
-Your grace and perseverance give proof that
you will succeed in whatever future endeavor
you choose. As you pass your crown this weekend,
please do not think of it as the end of your
reign but rather the beginning of another great
adventure – a wonderful life that has no
bounds.
-Best wishes and good luck to Princess Stephanie
as you compete in your first Pageant. When you
accepted your club’s tiara, you immediately made
us proud. You display poise, personality and
beauty so rare in someone so young. We know
this and after this weekend, the whole Bay will
know it.
finer young women and no club could be prouder

From The Queen of the Chesapeake
This last year represents one of the most life changing and memorable times
of my life. In June, 2006; I was blessed with the honor of serving as your 2006
Queen of the Chesapeake. Truly, my head was in the clouds, I was overwhelmed by
the wonder of it all. I was experiencing some of the most wonderful and exciting
times of my entire life. I felt challenged to get to know each of my clubs, their officers
and members, on a more personal level. Well, the unexpected sorrows of life
has brought each of you into my heart. The yacht clubs of the Chesapeake Bay
have become my family beyond even my greatest expectations. During my year of
reign, you have touched me deeply by your unconditional love and support. You
gave me the gift of strength in order to serve during what would also become the
saddest and most difficult days of my life.
By October, 2006; my mother was diagnosed with advanced stage cancer;
my wonderful, happy days as Queen were shattered. I was in shock and pain over
how in one frightening day my happy world had collapsed. I had assumed that I
would be unlikely to continue in my capacity as your Queen. I would need to
dedicate all my time and help to my family during these difficult days. Once again,
something wonderful and unexpected happened in my life. My yacht club family
gave me the love and strength to survive my heartache. I can never express how
dear you are to me. You will never know how moving your love truly is.
To the 2006-07 Commodores, First Ladies and Officers, I can never express
my respect and gratitude for each of you. Thank you for sharing this year with me,
and giving me memories that I will never forget.
To the 2007 princesses, each of you are so unique and beautiful. I could
never have been blessed with a better group of girls. I love each of you dearly and
wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors. Remember to always reach for
the moon, because no matter what, you will end up among the stars.
I would also like to thank my second home, Red Eye Yacht Club, for giving
me a chance at this wonderful opportunity. I cannot thank you each enough for
opening your doors and hearts to me, it is greatly appreciated. Without your support,
I don’t think this year could have been possible.
Again, I would like to thank everyone for making this year possible. I look
forward to seeing you on the bay!!
Lacie Bunting
Queen of the Chesapeake Pageant Director
Rhonda Rose
Since 1998, Rhonda Rose has been the director of the Queen of the Chesapeake Pageant.
With personal experience as both a participant and director of pageants, we are lucky to
have Rhonda share her expertise with our pageant participants.
Rhonda was crowned Miss Montgomery County in 1984 and went on to compete in the
Miss Maryland Scholarship Pageant that year, appearing in the top 15. From that point
on, Rhonda has been involved in pageants, also capturing titles in the Maryland Scholarship
program in the areas of Miss Greenbelt and Miss Frederick.
Prior to her involvement with pageants, Rhonda was a competitive baton twirler from
1972-1981, capturing many state titles. Rhonda went on to teach baton and dance and
then began directing the Queen of the Chesapeake Pageant in 1998, where she helps the
contestants develop and looks forward to seeing their growth from year to year.
Rhonda is currently employed by Lockheed Martin Corporation in Gaithersburg where
she is a manager for a service organization. She also operates her own business,
“Occasions, etc.”, a wedding and special event company.
Rhonda resides in Damascus, Maryland with her husband Larry and his two children, Andrew
and Brittany.
Rachel Holmes Crusan
Queen of the Chesapeake
1948
Rachel Holmes Cruzan was first educated
in art by nature. Growing up in rural
Northeastern Maryland, Rachel watched
the changes in color, texture and perspective
brought about by each change in season.
She learned about the subtleties of
color gradation, and the differences in
flora and fauna that occurred four times a year. As a child she had a natural interest in all things
artistic. She loved to crank out designs on sheets of paper from the family's manual spectograph.
"Art has always been fun for me," she says. Rachel loved music and words and grew to
be an accomplished writer, as well as a prolific and talented artist.
While studying for her Masters degree in Liberal Arts at Johns Hopkin University in Maryland,
Rachel reveled in her Art History classes and learned a great deal from spending time at the
Baltimore Museum of Art, conveniently located next door to the university campus, and at the
Walters Art Gallery in downtown Baltimore. As a teacher, Rachel used her artistic talents to
bring visual media to her language arts classroom. In so doing she was able to bring the written
word to life for her students.
As a commercial artist, Rachel learned how to translate her artistic talent into marketable mediums
while developing newspaper, magazine and billboard advertising.
Rachel always painted things she liked from people to trains, landscapes to florals and seascapes.
In so doing she has become highly skilled at turning two dimensional photographs into
three dimensional paintings that bring the subjects to life in a meaningful and memorable way.
France and Italy added artistic perspective to Rachel's arsenal of skills. Spending time in
Europe's art galleries and seeing the Masters on display expanded her ideas on various painting
techniques.
One of Rachel's daughters says that Rachel's paint choices parallel her life. During dark times,
she paints in muted and darker hues. When life is joyful, that joy is reflected in the vibrant colors
Rachel chooses.
Today, Rachel lives near the ocean in Northeast Florida and enjoys painting the seascapes,
landscapes, flora and fauna of the region as well as portraits. Her art is displayed at a variety of
area art shows and she teaches watercolor painting in the area. Rachel welcomes the opportunity
to paint commissioned pieces

Have a slip? Looking for fun? Come to Maryland Yacht Club!
Don’t need a slip? No boat? Just want to have fun? Come to Maryland Yacht Club!
We are one of the friendliest and most active yacht clubs on the Chesapeake Bay! Maryland Yacht Club covers
over eight acres of beautiful waterfront at the end of Fairview Beach Road in Pasadena Maryland. It
is situated at the entrance to Rock Creek and commands a grand view of the Patapsco River on one
side and Rock Creek on the other.
It is true that MYC has great facilities and numerous social events, but we also have wonderful people.
The yachting community is about boating, friends, and families. Come for a
visit, stay for the lifestyle.
We offer two types of membership, Resident and Social.
Resident Members have a slip contract and keep their boat in the basin.
They have full access to all the Club facilities and events. They also have a
vote on the business matters (rules, budget, fees) of the Club at the quarterly
general membership meetings.
Social Members do not have a slip contract or vote on the business matters of the Club. They do have
full access to all the Club facilities and events.
For more information, contact Bob Hrivnak, Membership Chair at 410-461-7509
Here are some gems from our Maryland Yacht Club history that we would
like to share with our guests.
Contributed by P/C Harold E. Fink
One Sunday afternoon, one of those unreliable
“Naphtha” launches conked out just off a yacht club at
Ferry Bar, Baltimore Harbor. They paddled over to the
club dock for protection until a storm passed but the
storm on the dock was even worse. Uniformed dock
boys were threatening to cut their lines if they didn’t
leave. Members on the porch were shouting “Get that
damn thing away from here before it blows up and kills
everybody.” Finally, the storm passed, the engine
started, and they cast off much to the relief of the members
and employees of the club. After leaving the hostile
dock, the Naphtha launch men decided to start a club of
their own and called it Maryland Yacht Club.
Commodore
William P. Bigelow 1911
On the night of October 27, 1908, at the old Auto House in Baltimore, forty-eight men
attended a meeting at the invitation of Mr. E. C. Loane. The new club was officially organized
as the Maryland Motor Boat Club incorporated on November 10, 1908, when it
was duly recorded with the State Tax Commission. The record is signed by Meyer
Rosenblush, our first Commodore. It is likely that we are the second oldest Yacht Club
in the United States in terms of continuous history and proven dates.
In the spring of 1909, the Club raised $8,000 and built a clubhouse on piles on the northern
shore of the middle branch of the Patapsco River between the present Hanover Street
Bridge and Ferry Bar. A picture of this clubhouse is in our current clubhouse. When
more than a few sail boaters joined the club it was decided to change the name to Maryland
Yacht Club, which was done on December 17, 1919.
Soon after that, the Western Maryland Railroad bought Ferry Bar from the city, forcing
the Club to a new location. The sunken yacht Violet was raised and towed to where the
Hanover Bridge Marina is today, and it became the clubs new home. The membership at
that time was 138. A picture of the Violet is also in our clubhouse. Commodore Rosenblush’s
Seylla, in the picture, won a silver cup on August 22, 1914, and this is the Club’s
oldest trophy. By 1925 the membership had outgrown the Violet so they moved to Broening
Park, which was owned by the city and is now the location of Harbor Hospital.
Twenty thousand people were present to see the opening ceremonies and the first power
boat race in Baltimore. Commodore Fredrick led a Fleet Review of 65 boats that day.
The basin grew to 188 slips and was a model for other clubs throughout the country. The
membership in 1929 was 665.
In 1945, the Club leased Fairview (our present site) for ten
years with the thought that this would be a summer quarters.
Fairview had been a big, commercial beach and amusement
park in the 30’s. The steamships Mohawk, Fairview, and
Kitty Knight brought people by boat from Baltimore and others
came by car. During the war years of the 40’s, the boats
were gone and the cars had no gas. After the war, when gas
was again available, the cars drove to Ocean City instead of
nearby Bay beaches. In the late 40’s, the old hotel was renovated
into a more modern clubhouse with a dining room,
dance floor, cocktail lounge, kitchen and restrooms. In 1953,
the Club bought Fairview and in 1955 left Broening Park.
The first “Queen of the Chesapeake” Pageant was held in
1948 and the first Queen was Miss Rachel Holmes of Bush
River Yacht Club. The interviewing of contestants started in
1950. Maryland Yacht Club has had three winners: Mary Lou
King in 1951, Ellen Potter in 1970, and Carol Doetlaff in
1987.
In 1971, the new “A” pier project was started and that lead to
the rebuilding of the other piers into our present B,C,D and E
piers.
Then came the 1975 Labor Day cruise to St. Michael’s. At
2:00a.m. Sunday morning the phone call came informing us
that the clubhouse had burned down. We only had a few
thousand dollars in the bank, but with lots of courage we
built anew. Our present clubhouse was completed in October,
1976.
In 1982, the beach house was torn down and rebuilt making
the oldest original structure standing today the carousel,
which was built in the early 30’s. The pilings to the north of
the beach house which once supported the loading dock
where the steamers tied up and discharged their happy
crowds are still visible.
The automatic gate was installed in 1978 and many problems
(some mechanical) came with it, but they were a minor inconvenience
compared to the improved security. You can be
sure, however, that our gate is always open to our boating
friends, and that exciting things will continue to happen at
Maryland Yacht Club.
