Jackets by length <strong>and</strong> shape<br />
Jacket lengths used by consumers refer to body l<strong>and</strong>marks such<br />
as waist, hip, crotch, <strong>and</strong> thumb. Apparel industry personnel use<br />
center back length measurements in inches from the base of the<br />
neck to the hem. The approximate l<strong>and</strong>mark inch equivalents <strong>for</strong><br />
size 10 are given below.<br />
Waist = 18/19 inches from neck to hem at center back<br />
Hipbone = 19/20 inches from neck to hem at center back<br />
2 inches below hip = 23/24 inches from neck to hem at center back<br />
Crotch = 27 inches from neck to hem at center back<br />
Rule of thumb = 28/29 inches from neck to hem at center back<br />
Three-quarter length = 29 inches from neck to hem at center back<br />
Seven-eighths = 34 inches from neckline to hem at center back<br />
Bolero<br />
Very short, waist length or above the<br />
waist, collarless <strong>and</strong> buttonless. May be<br />
long- or short-sleeved or sleeveless.<br />
Variation with long sleeves, epaulets, <strong>and</strong><br />
braid trim is called a toreador.<br />
Chanel<br />
Waist length or slightly longer, unfitted,<br />
collarless jacket. Edge usually trimmed<br />
