arrests for possession and five for
possession with intent to distribute
controlled substances.
There are fewer contacts with
the school resource officers at
Greenbelt Middle School (GMS).
There were 61 complaints at the
school that officers responded to
and 143 student contacts. There
were no truancy issues as it is
much harder to leave GMS undetected.
At ERHS, students are
often leaving for work release,
special classes, etc., making it
more difficult to detect truants.
Special Projects
Parker showed slides of many
of their special projects and the
children who participated. Probably
their oldest project is DARE
– Drug Abuse Resistance Education.
DARE activities are presented
by the officers in grades 1,
3 and 5 at Springhill Lake (SHL)
and Greenbelt Elementary (GES)
Schools. At SHL, there was an
essay contest and Parker showed
smiling winners at a bowling alley,
bowling and eating pizza.
In the 6th grade at GMS and
GES, the officers are working on
GREAT – Gang Resistance Education
and Training. There are
currently 100 students enrolled in
GREAT and their motto is “No
Violence is GREAT.” Parker
commented that they are the only
group in the area with a gang
resistance project.
Four students from GES and
GMS were able to attend the
AAA Safety Patrol Camp in
Thurmont, thanks in part to funds
from the GES PTA. Walk to
School Day is now held annually;
he mentioned specifically
the PTA involvement at SHL
and GES.
At ERHS last spring, the officers
were involved with the
Students Against Destructive
Decisions. Parker specifically
commended the group’s sponsor,
Joanne Read, for the time she
devotes to this activity. There
is a mock car crash with the
wrecked car sitting outside as a
reminder. There is also a Grim
Ghost Day where the officers
read fake obituaries for students
to show how students could get
killed in car crashes and through
other destructive activities.
Accompanying students on
their trip to Camp Schmitt is one
of many times when the students
get to see the officers as friends
and mentors. The two officers
have a very busy schedule during
the school year.

career. Peggy drove a school
bus for 20 years and ruined her
back sitting in those hard, upright
drivers’ seats. But I think Peg
always just wanted to be a wife
and a mother. And she was a
great one. She later became a
truly devoted grandmother who
bequeathed her toughness and
determination as a model for
them to follow. Her children
and her grandchildren did her
proud, as they say, and certainly
she will live through them for
many years.
Nice job, Peg. We will miss
your smile, your kisses and your
love.

Court Hillside were out in force
Sunday, shoveling community
sidewalks, digging out each others’
cars and spreading rock salt
