First stop is the Royal Highland Show from the 21st till 24th of June. Visit the

Gardening expert Brian Beattie
We are proud to have in house experts who are qualified to give you
the best specialist advice and this season are delighted to introduce you
to our gardening expert Brian Beattie, Manager of our Peebles store.
As our gardening and hardware expert, Brian enjoys both areas greatly
and when he is not working at Millers tending to the plants he can be
found riding his bicycle on the Tweed Valley roads.
Here are Brian’s top tips to keep your garden
looking blooming marvellous this Summer.
After flowering split and divide over crowded clumps of Irises.
Cut leaves back to about 9 inches in length to avoid roots being
loosened by the wind.
Move your spring bulbs to make room for bedding plants. Place
in a temporary plot and let them die back naturally.
Any tall growing plants such as Delphinium, Lupin, Poppies and
Climbers need a framework or canes and string around them to
prevent damage by winds.
Plant summer bedding plants such as: Busy Lizzie, Tobacco plants,
Marigolds, Pansies, Lobelia and Stocks, all available at Millers. An hour
before planting give them a good soaking as well as the planting
ground too, plant morning or evening if it’s a sunny day.
Prepare beds by raking into a fine tilth and fertilising it using a general
fertiliser like Growmore or try an organic one such as Westland Fish,
Blood and Bone or 6X.
After flowering you can prune Forsythia, Pieris, Weigela, Berberis,
Philadelphus (mock orange). Add a mulch to the base of your sweet
peas, remove the tendrils and pinch outside shoots.
June is the month that persistent weeds outstay their welcome,
control these on your path or slabbed patio areas with a weedkiller
such as Resolva Path and Patio from Westland.
Keep weeding by hoeing or hand weeding with a trowel, we have
a good selection at reasonable cost from the Yeoman Range.
Keep a close eye on your roses for insects and disease. If there are
any signs of them being attacked treat with a systemic insecticide
or fungicide.
Dead head fading flower heads of Lupins and Delphiniums to
encourage a second flush of flowers in July or August.
Dig up and divide Trim alpine plants and take cuttings. Prick out
Alyssums and Aubrietias. Stop outdoor vines. Plant leeks, cabbages,
marrows and celery. Pick tomatoes and gooseberries. Be sure to
treat any apple trees that have developed mildew or scab and
spray every fortnight.
