What is
Internet TV?
Television Redefined:
Sony smart TV
A new technology is sweeping through home entertainment, changing everything in its path: smart TV. As usual,
one company has been innovating from the beginning, with the most sophisticated features and the highest performance.
It’s Sony.
Sony BRAVIA® smart TV gives your customers powerful advantages:
1. More of the Internet content your customers want. All the
major TV brands offer YouTube, Netflix®, Pandora®, Twitter, and
Facebook®. Sony matches all of that, plus access to the a wider
variety of programming partners including Q Music Unlimited and
Crackle, a Sony service with over 250 FREE movies and TV shows
every month. We can do these things because we’re not only a
major television manufacturer, we’re also a major Hollywood studio.
2. More music. Now your customers can use their televisions as a
convenient gateway to the world of Internet music. But while
Samsung, for example, offers access to only two music services,
Sony delivers seven. It’s a huge advantage for anyone who
likes music.
3. More power to make the Internet work for your customers.
Every BRAVIA® smart TV has features that the competition reserves
for higher-end models, including built-in web browser and free
Skype-to-Skype calling. 2 While Samsung reserves built-in wireless
LAN for just a few series, Sony has it on most of our current models.
4. Better picture quality. In addition to everything Sony does to
optimize the picture for Blu-ray Disc, DVD, broadcast, cable and
satellite, we have the new X-Reality and X-Reality PRO
engines to take streaming video picture quality to unexpected
new heights.
5. More convenience. Sony has cool new ways to bring Internet
and television content together. With BRAVIA® widgets you can
multi-task. As just one example, you can follow an out-of-town
score in a small window while you watch the home team on the
rest of the screen.
What is Internet TV?
A “smart TV” is the home television equivalent of a Smart Phone. It’s a TV that accesses and displays Internet content along
with conventional television channels. So in addition to their usual TV shows, your customers can enjoy such essential
web-based services as YouTube, Netflix®, Skype 2 , Pandora® and Hulu Plus 1 .
Typically, Smart TVs also support DLNA ® connectivity for network access to your personal entertainment content: photos,
videos and music. By downloading a free app for either Android TM or Apple ® iOS phones, you can also use your smart
phone as a TV remote control 4 .
As you will see, Sony smart TV satisfies all of these basic requirements, and does much, much more.
Advancing Technology and Evolving Feature Names
If you’ve been around television sales, you’ve probably noticed that Sony has updated our smart TV feature names. We’ve
done it to accommodate the launch of Sony Internet TV powered by Google TV , to anticipate the launch of the Android
Market TM for Google TV and to take advantage of phrases that consumers recognize and appreciate.
• “BRAVIA® Internet Video Link” became “BRAVIA® Internet Video” and now “Sony smart TV.”
• “BRAVIA® Internet Video channels” are now known as “Apps.”
• “BRAVIA® Internet Video widgets” are also called “Apps.”
Web video is full of picture quality issues. It may look great on your cellphone and “a little grainy” on your laptop, but it
can be nearly unwatchable when scaled up for display on a 60-inch television. That’s why every Sony BRAVIA® smart TV
includes the X-Reality picture engine and top models go even further with the X-Reality PRO engine.
• The X-Reality engine uses an intelligent MPEG Noise Reduction to carefully reduce the noise common
in Internet video, while Intelligent Image Enhancer improves edge sharpness, optimizes texture,
color and contrast.
• The X-Reality PRO engine has both of these features and adds a
second chip to analyze the picture scene-by-scene, pixel-by-pixel. The system uses sophisticated
pattern matching to optimize the picture. The result? Sony’s best picture, ever.
In classic sales technique, you don’t launch into a product pitch immediately. Asking questions to
carefully qualify the customer will pay off in two important ways. First, the more questions you
ask -- and the more carefully you listen to the answers -- the more convinced your
customer will be that you really have their best interests at heart. Second, by
repeating back the customer’s stated preferences and drawing the
connection to product benefits, you’ll make the sales pitch a
custom-tailored slam dunk:
“You told me you liked movies. This Sony accesses over 250 FREE
movies and TV episodes every month with the Crackle Internet
Question #10: Do you ever get bored watching the same old TV and cable channels?
Benefit: Stream literally millions of videos from the web, right to your TV.
Explanation: Expanding your entertainment options is the essential benefit of Sony smart TV. You can search and
stream a staggering variety of web content and enjoy it on the largest screen in your house.
YouTube and Netflix® are just the beginning. Choose from a long list of available apps.
Question #9: Do you care about picture quality?
Benefit: Sony makes web videos look their best.
Explanation: Web videos that might be okay on a small, low-res PC screen can
look blocky, fuzzy and noisy on a big High Definition TV. Sony’s
X-Reality and X-Reality PRO picture engines make a major
difference, reducing MPEG noise and optimizing the picture
contrast, color, texture and edge sharpness. The X-Reality PRO
system goes even further with a second processing chip that
analyzes the scene pixel-by-pixel and uses sophisticated
pattern matching.
