Disney package looks great for developing an idea or for the ama- teur who wants to produce his or her own stuff, - Cor, chief! We were more than a little reluc- tant to terminate our day out at Cosgrove HoII, and refused to leave without on armful or sou- venirs and a posed photo with Igor Ond Duckuia himself. After all, the Amiga is at heart a fun machine. and to see It put to good use by the company which has brought so much enjoyment through Its cartoons was a most welcome treat, It our Amy is capable of service at the professional level and with such an Illustrious crew of anima- tors, then there's surety some hope ror those of us at the mere amateur level who'll be diving with glee into The Animation Studio. Paper to pixel In the world of computer anima- tion there are two distinct routes employed to create the moving pictures we all know and love. Your approach to the subject is usually determined by your bockground. whether it lies either in the hand draw approach of the illustrator or the digital trickery of the artistic techno-lunkle. The average Amiga enthusiast will no doubt be more at home with the conventional Amiga envi- ronment or the paint package, with imagery being provided from the somewhat less than subtle touch of the various processing toot employed. not least of which Is the rather dunky Amigo mouse. The second approach Is a more traditional one combining the hard-earned skills of the conven- tional Illustrator along with the pro- tut t r i e s : I Pla ins t litche Lbe Chroma-Coiour s digitize option shows its pmtessional touch Walt Disney isn't the first company to attempt a del- looted low-end Amiga animation package - it's just The latest and most successful. There hove been sev- , eral previous offerings, including Antic Software's Zoetrope package, This suffered originally from being low-refs NTSC only, and utilising Its own picture format, but was a hint of what we might expect from the Amiga Since we reviewed Zoetrope in the April 1989 issue, there has been a dearth of animation pack- ages with the notable exception of DPoint III Programs such as Animagic and Fantavision have tried to raise an eyebrow, but none have been suffi- ciently feature-packed to become a mainstream k: rival for the al-conquering DPaint D i t I tite : Ire COM What has been missing from nearly all previous Ark. animation programs has been an approach which — Metta Inn 11 - 4140 rewrines e mrsti e t e r A l Count Docksio come s gra dua lly to life cessing power of the computer It's this approach which Chroma- Colour's Softoons is designed to exploit, combining the two talents with the aid of video digitising The biggest complaint from free hand artists when confronted wtth computerisation Is the prospect of using a mouse. Zoetrope was stuffed with special effects, such as fades. wipes and shatters, which you could apply to your graphics, but none of these were of any particular use. Clever though they may be. such effects are real- ly only useful it your animation is designed for a pro- fessional presentation rather than a cartoon. Zoetrope was too crude for the former and unsuit- able for the loiter. starter with most animators. As a result on alternative method is required arid it's here that the digi- tiser comes into its own, importing hand drown cels direct from the Zoetrope was and remains an excellent program In a technical sense, especially when you remember ; its age. However, it is also the best example of on early Amigo package which. white being dreamily put together, was dismally defi cient In its apprecia- tion of just which market It was supposed to be aimed at. chromo-Colour is more fle xible in use, if more difficult paper to the line-tester for editing, composition and of course playback. Its fair to say Sottoons is the answer to on animator's needs rather than that of the Amiga enthusiast hoping to dabble in a touch of the Dtsneys. As a re,sult of the specialised approached and the consequent limit for potential sales the Softoons system is not for the fi nancially toot hearted with a stoning price of £630 for the software alone. If you were to go the whole hog and invest in the complete system Of cameras, rostrum stands and monitors it would add up to just under £3,000. As I said, It's not aimed at the amateur. The system comes in two distinct formats, either on A500 version which is designed to suit the needs of an animator working from home, or the more advanced and expen- sive Amiga 2000-based system designed specifically for studio use. The principle ckfference between the two systems is the number of available levels of animation. The A500 version only manages one level similar to that of TAS, whereas the studio version is capable of up to tots level combinations. This basically means that al the elements of the animation pro- duced on the A500 system must be drawn arid shot onto a single cel, the studio alternative being capa- ble of combining lout individual drawings onto the some exposure sheet to form the finished cel. Each element joins with the rest but still retains its individuality for editing purposes. To be realistic, the price of the Amiga C omputing 2 1
