Yuba City and Marysville Kiwanis Clubs<br />
begin the 14 th Annual Salvation Army<br />
Kettle Competition<br />
Yuba City Kiwanis is heavily favored <strong>to</strong> retain the coveted Salvation Army Kettle<br />
Competition Trophy this year when they ring bells <strong>to</strong> solicit donations <strong>to</strong> their<br />
Salvation Army Kettle from 8:30 am <strong>to</strong> 4:30 pm Thursday, December 6, in front<br />
of Yuba City Post Office on Plumas Street.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Kettle Competition started 13 years ago as a contest between the Yuba City<br />
Kiwanis Club and <strong>The</strong> Marysville Kiwanis Club, and expanded last year <strong>to</strong> include<br />
four local Rotary Clubs, and <strong>The</strong> Peach Bowl Lions and any other service club who<br />
wants <strong>to</strong> volunteer. <strong>The</strong> service club competition raised $11,617 for the Yuba-Sutter<br />
Salvation Army last year.<br />

<strong>The</strong> team of Yuba City Kiwanis and Yuba City Early Riser’s Kiwanis won last year’s<br />
competition by raising $3,522 in their Kettle while Marysville Kiwanis <strong>to</strong>ok second<br />
place by raising $3,257. Sutter Buttes Sunrise Rotary won a close third place with $2,467. Other first year competi<strong>to</strong>rs included: Yuba Feather River<br />
Sunrise Rotary with $662, Marysville Noon Rotary with $622, Peach Bowl Lions with $586 and Yuba City Noon Rotary with $500.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Marysville Kiwanis has won nine of the 13 contests, but Yuba City Kiwanis Team Captain<br />
Clark Buschmann said Yuba City Kiwanis reestablished its dominance with last year’s vic<strong>to</strong>ry.<br />
“We’re bringing out the big guns again this year on Thursday, December 6, in front of the Yuba<br />
City Post Office,” he said. “Yuba City Noon Kiwanis and Tom Walther’s Yuba City Early Risers<br />
have joined forces again <strong>to</strong> ensure Marysville suffers an ugly defeat.” He said, “We defeated the<br />
Marysville Kiwanis Club by more than $1,000 in the 2009 contest, and we defeated them in 2011.<br />
We will prevail again this year.”<br />
Last year’s Marysville Kiwanis President Dennise Burbank disagreed. She said, “We’re going <strong>to</strong><br />
kick Yuba City Kiwanis booty.” Aside from the joking, Burbank said, “It’s absolutely a good cause.<br />
<strong>The</strong>re’s a lot of need out there.”<br />
Yuba City Kiwanis will be ringing their bells Thursday, December 6, outside Yuba City Post Office.<br />
Marysville Kiwanis Club will be ringing their bells Friday, December 14, in front of the Marysville<br />
Post Office. <strong>The</strong> margin of vic<strong>to</strong>ry between the two clubs is often as low as $5. One of the new<br />
clubs entering the competition may also take the 2012 Trophy.<br />
