Company History
RP History
RP History @ Burton
1977–2004
• Prototypes were created through traditional Model Making methods.
• As CAD was utilized more, SLA’s were purchased from RP Houses and used for Design &
Fit verification.
• Some CNC work was also utilized, but most geometries made cutting multiple parts
difficult.
2004
• SLS Vanguard is purchased with the intent to build ride-able Binding prototypes.
• Ride-able protos were not immediately possible, initiating extensive material & parameter
testing.
• ~250 Job Requests from 4 Business Units
2005-2008
• Increase in requests plus materials testing & on snow capable development
• Number of requests increased by an average of 60%
• 1000+ Job Requests by 12/08
•Objet Connex purchased to support development of non-engineering heavy product
development – 7/2008

Summary
• RP has changed development cycle dramatically
• Communication has improved greatly from Team to
Factory
• Timelines have shorted as much as 12 months
• Time for R&D projects & Innovation has increased
• Problem solving during Industrialization phase is
more effective
• Tooled samples are less critical for Marketing
phase & tradeshows

Rapid Prototyping as a Strategy
Reduce Design Time and Costs
Increase Innovation, Creativity and Communication
• Effectively communicate the design intent earlier in the cycle
– Gather design revisions from various business groups
– Models can be painted, metal coated or dyed to resemble end product
• 3-D Printing allows for many design iterations
– Numerous variations of a design on a single tray
– Validate Complex Multi-material designs
Connex500 - Digital Materials
Dual material jetting
Uniquely versatile prototypes
Digital Materials (DM) are two FullCure® model
materials combined in a specific concentration
and structure to generate a set of properties
(physical, mechanical, shades and tones, etc.)
different from those of the parent materials
Printed Parts with Production Look and Feel
Strengths of the Connex500
• Emulate the look, feel and function of
final products
– Detailed prototypes with realistic feel straight
from the printer
– Enables the simulation of over-molding and
double injection in a single print
– Using DM’s and coatings allows a limitless
numbers of combinations
• Cartridge Based Material System
• High accuracy - Smooth surface finish
• Office friendly
• 8 Base Materials - 21 Digital Materials
