DB Philosophy
“Play Smart, Play Fast”
Can‟t Play DB with your pad level high, must stay low at all times.
DBs run and back pedal all day, it‟s our competitive edge.
Be a great technician, and playmaker. You either have it or you find it. No Excuses.
Be calm at all times.
Be surgical with your footwork.
Football is a physical sport, we must never be blocked.
Find an Edge and Build a ledge! Play like a Champion.
Stay compact like a boxer at all times.
Have a solid stance, either in press or off technique.
Keep yours arms within the framework of your body for balance.
Be controlled and pack a punch.
Be a Great Playmaker.
Playmakers are never afraid of success.
Don't be afraid of failure.
Focus on your responsibilities.
Repetition is the key to mastery.
Run to the ball.
Violent hands.
Never stop your feet.
Be creative.
Be scientific in your approach.
Have an Attack Formula for every WR or TE.
Be aggressive.
Be prepared to play when the ball is snapped.
Never let a WR step on your toes.
Put the WR in a pickle by staying square.
Stare the WR down by focusing on his hips.
Stay Punch Distance Away before you open up.
Be where you need to be on time.
Be defensive friendly.
Play the defense that is called.
Know that all zones turn into MAN!!!!!
In Zone coverage read the receiving threats, not staring at the QB.
Never have excuses.
Be a great tackler.
Give the illusion of everything looks the same.
Off technique 7 yards off, 1 yard inside, in zone or man.
Off technique read the 3-step
Keep your eyes on your man.
When stemmed by a WR stay square, by stem pedaling.

Take pride in playing to the whistle.
Press technique, inside shade your knee to the WR crouch.
Press technique, move your feet first, hands second.
Key is keeping the WR in front of you.
Different press techniques; bail, smash, motor, kick-step, inch, press bail.
Bail: when the WR moves or the ball snapped get outside shade and on top of the WR
already running.
Smash: when the ball is snapped, 2 hand tough jam the WR with all your strength from
inside out.
Motor: quick backpedal like letting the WR pick the way he wants to release.
Kick-step: perfect for WRs off the ball, taking a step inside and back staying square to
take away the inside.
Inch: like motor, but quick hops back.
Press-bail: show bail, and at the snap smash from outside in.
It‟s a physical sport, it‟s part of the deal.
Anyone can play this game healthy.
Its how you play hurt that matters.
Suck it up and play like a champion.
Compete all the way to the “Final Play”
Road to the Final Play.
65% Drills and film study. Be the smartest and most sound.
15% 1 on 1, 7 on 7, and 11on 11.
11% Conditioning, be in shape. Run to Win.
8% “Game Time.” Be a Gamer.
1% when it matters most, “The Clutch.” The “It” factor.
Highlights speak so loud you can hear what you‟re saying.
Hunger breeds Preparation
Preparation breeds Confidence
Confidence breeds Creativity
Creativity breeds Highlights.
M.O.- “Coach with a focus and a undying love for the game, in the process turning young
student-athletes into men, with competition, and encouragement challenging myself and
WRITTEN EVALUATION
Defensive Back: A natural leader. Excellent combination of size, strength, athleticism, and body control.
He has great foot quickness, balance, and agility to maintain proper body positioning in coverage. Has
tremendous coverage skills for a safety, excels as being a ball hawking free safety. Has excellent hips to
open turn and run with receivers, as well as burst to stay in his opponents’ hip pocket. Aggressive with
the ball in the air and always attacks the ball at its highest point. Shows excellent ball skills, which makes
him a great playmaker. Good run support defender with an incredible break on the ball and is well
schooled in the finer points of the game. Only negative, he will need to add bulk to his frame.
Wide Receiver: A talented and productive receiver who is a pure hands catcher with decent downfield
speed and has the ability to adjust to balls once in the air. Extremely competitive to the ball when he is
the target and never shows a lackadaisical attitude when on the back side of plays or when asked to
block. Is an average route runner with decent explosion coming out of his breaks. He lacks the big play at
receiver and plays in a run first offense.
Returning: An above average return specialist who often looks to make the big play too much rather than
take what is given to him. But does posses the ability to take it all the way every time he touches the ball.
He gets a quick jump on the ball as it comes off the kickers/punters foot and does a good job of settling
under it to make the catch. He is more of a powerful runner that breaks arm tackles.
PROJECTION: Rahim’s game can translate to the college level immediately and will be an impact
player as a freshman on the D1 level as a defensive back. He is quite possibly the #1 overall
player for the 2007 class on the defense side of the ball. He is very coachable, and a hard worker.
WRITTEN EVALUATION
Defensive Back: Excellent instincts as a free safety. He is excellent at reading run-pass very well and is
good in run-support. Can be very physical but is a very sure tackler, showing great form and goes low
when making a tackle. He single handedly takes the deep pass and the big play away from the opponents
offense. He has good hips and drives on the ball very well. He shows good hands and is very dangerous
after an interception. He needs to add weight but he has the frame to carry 210 pounds.
Wide Receiver: He is very quick with the ball in his hands and can score from any place on the field. He
has excellent feet and changes direction quickly. He is a pure hands catcher with great downfield speed,
who adjusts to the ball well once in the air. He is extremely competitive and blocks well. Good route
runner with explosion coming out of his breaks. NO high school DB will be able to cover him. He has
shown the ability to play the slot or out wide.
Returning: Outstanding return specialist who can find the end zone every time he catches the ball. He is
very elusive and has game changing speed. Can out run defenders and sets people up to miss on
tackles. He is a sure handed and patient returner, and uses all his ability to make a play when there may
not be one available.
PROJECTION: Robert can play at the D1 level and make an immediate impact on either side of the
ball. He will most likely become an offensive star because he is too dangerous with the ball in his
hands to only be used as a returner.
