Science Department Update
Biology Excursion
The Senior Biology class
attended two workshops in
Week 6 and Week 7 of this
term. The topics of Search for
Better Health and Maintaining
the Balance are part of their
HSC curriculum.
The first workshop at the
Sydney Children’s Hospital
and the second workshop at
the UNSW at the Museum of
Human Disease provided great
support for the students preparing for their HSC Biology
exams.
The students enjoyed the Interactive activities provided
and found both courses very informative.
Year 7 Science
Year 7 Science students are
currently completing their
Term 3 Assessment Task on
Cells.
This assessment includes
the student creating their
own 3D model of a Plant
cell. Many students have already started and there are
many good ideas and designs emerging. The assessment
concludes with a presentation to the class on their Cell
model.

Year 8 and Support 2
Monday, 8 October 2012
Year 8 and Support 2 have been doing their Term 3
Assessment Task on the effects of different levels of
salinity on healthy plants. The
experiment is done over a 2‐3 week
period where the plants are watered,
measured and graphed. The
assessment concludes with a
presentation on the results of the
experiment.
Year 9
Year 9 are about to commence
their Term 3 Assessment Task on
Corrosion. This experiment is done
over a period of a week and looks
at the different effects that certain
elements have on metal. The
assessment concludes with a
presentation on their findings.
From the Careers Desk….
Mr O’Connor, HT Science
Over the last month Year 12 have had several guest
speakers talking with them about choices for University,
TAFE, employment and apprenticeships as they plan for
their post school destinations.
On Friday 31 st August Missy and I accompanied Senior
Aboriginal students to a careers day at Little Bay. This
was a wonderful event.
In 2013, 4 year 10 students have applied to do either a
school based traineeship or apprenticeship. This will
combine school and work.
Three Year 10 students have applied to do a Get into
Vet course in Term 4. This will mean they will be
attending TAFE 2 days a week and coming to school 3
days a week. Increasingly the education system is
changing and we currently have students who are in
Year 11 yet actually completing Year 12 subjects
because they started Year 11 subjects in Year 10‐ a year
ahead of time.
At the end of this year we will have 4 students
completing a 2 year school based traineeship with
QANTAS.
