Little Bay Community of Schools (LBCoS)
Launch
The school recently hosted the official launch of the
Little Bay Community of Schools. This consists of
Matraville Sports High School and its feeder Primary
Schools: Chifley Public School, La Perouse Public
School, Malabar Public School, Matraville Public School
and Matraville Soldiers Settlement Public School.
While the LBCoS has been operating for a number of
years the gaining of a grant enabled us to officially
launch the Community of Schools in style on the 8 th
August 2012.
A number of shared quality educational programs have
been established across the LBCoS including:
 Japanese Language Program
 Dance Program
 Band Program
 Sporting Gala Days
 Gifted and Talented Program
Middle Years Transition to High School Program
We are very proud to be involved in such an association
with our neighbouring schools.
School Focus Areas
The two main focus areas of the school for 2013 as you
are aware are Reading and Student Management.
I have recently written to the parents of Year 7 to 10
students informing them of the progress of their
students reading level. Ensuring your student engages
in some form of reading at home would assist their
progress greatly.
Please contact Mr Evans, DP if you would like some
ideas on how to do this.
Matra Matters is a school matrix of expected student
behaviour, a reward and discipline flowchart are part of
this.
As a parent/carer you can support the school in a
number of simple ways including:
ensuring your student is dressed in school
uniform and supplied with a note if not
is prepared for school i.e. school bag, books,
pen, calculator, homework completed
arrives at school on time each day and
is aware of good manners and respectful
relationships and what that means.
Like parents, the school wants students to achieve
academically but also develop into good socially
responsible, well‐mannered individuals.
Subject Selections
Year 8, 10 and 11 students have been informed via the
noticeboard in the canteen of the subjects they will be
placed into as of rollover this year. Please be aware this
is if previous subject fees have been paid.
Rollover
Rollover will occur on Monday 5 th November at the
beginning of Week 5, Term 4. This will mean all
students will have a solid 6 weeks of study in their new
Year group prior to the end of the school year. This is
extremely valuable learning time for all of our students
and student attendance is crucial.

The Senior Biology class
attended two workshops in
Week 6 and Week 7 of this
term. The topics of Search for
Better Health and Maintaining
the Balance are part of their
HSC curriculum.
The first workshop at the
Sydney Children’s Hospital
and the second workshop at
the UNSW at the Museum of
Human Disease provided great
support for the students preparing for their HSC Biology
exams.
The students enjoyed the Interactive activities provided
and found both courses very informative.
Year 7 Science
Year 7 Science students are
currently completing their
Term 3 Assessment Task on
Cells.
This assessment includes
the student creating their
own 3D model of a Plant
cell. Many students have already started and there are
many good ideas and designs emerging. The assessment
concludes with a presentation to the class on their Cell
model.
Year 8 and Support 2
Monday, 8 October 2012
Year 8 and Support 2 have been doing their Term 3
Assessment Task on the effects of different levels of
salinity on healthy plants. The
experiment is done over a 2‐3 week
period where the plants are watered,
measured and graphed. The
assessment concludes with a
presentation on the results of the
experiment.
Year 9
Year 9 are about to commence
their Term 3 Assessment Task on
Corrosion. This experiment is done
over a period of a week and looks
at the different effects that certain
elements have on metal. The
assessment concludes with a
presentation on their findings.
From the Careers Desk….
Mr O’Connor, HT Science
Over the last month Year 12 have had several guest
speakers talking with them about choices for University,
TAFE, employment and apprenticeships as they plan for
their post school destinations.
On Friday 31 st August Missy and I accompanied Senior
Aboriginal students to a careers day at Little Bay. This
was a wonderful event.
In 2013, 4 year 10 students have applied to do either a
school based traineeship or apprenticeship. This will
combine school and work.
Three Year 10 students have applied to do a Get into
Vet course in Term 4. This will mean they will be
attending TAFE 2 days a week and coming to school 3
days a week. Increasingly the education system is
changing and we currently have students who are in
Year 11 yet actually completing Year 12 subjects
because they started Year 11 subjects in Year 10‐ a year
ahead of time.
At the end of this year we will have 4 students
completing a 2 year school based traineeship with
QANTAS.

Issue 6 - Term 3 – Week 10
As careers adviser I wish to take this opportunity to
wish all Year 12 the best for their future endeavours
and I would encourage them to follow their dream.
Women in Sport Dinner 2012
Ms Mander-Ross, Careers Adviser
Ms Gerondis and 5 TSP netballers attended The
Women’s College annual Women in Sport Dinner held
at the College on The University of Sydney Campus on
Friday 31 st August. The dinner is organised to introduce
the girls to College life at to meet girls who are
currently combining study with a career in sport.
The guest speaker this year was Jessica Fox, a silver
medal winner at this year’s Olympic Games! Her speech
was so inspirational, as was being so close to an actual
Olympic medal. The girls were certainly inspired by the
possibility of the great opportunities offered for girls in
sport.
On Wednesday 7 th September, Term 3, Matraville
Sports High School hosted the Cluster Final to find the
TOP NUMBER CRUNCHER between our school and six
other local Primary Schools. Students from Years 6 and
7 had completed 5 in class rounds of written questions
testing their skills, speed and accuracy in mathematics.
(Mainly in mental Arithmetic). Different High Schools
formed clusters and hosted competitions with their
Primary schools. Each of our Primary schools sent their
5 top achievers to our Cluster Final.
We also had a play off in finding the Rubik’s Cube
Champion and Champion in reciting Pi to the most
number of decimal places.
The participating schools in our cluster included:
Daceyville PS, Pagewood PS, Chifley PS,
Matraville PS, Matraville Soldiers Settlement PS,
Malabar PS and Matraville HS.
Following is a small example of the (addition and
subtraction section only) bank of questions used in the
Final in which students were given a 15 second time
limit to answer. How fast can you answer these??
DID YOU KNOW???
The Greek letter Π (pi) is a special number (an
irrational number since it cannot be expressed as a
fraction) whose exact value cannot be found. Except

Issue 6 - Term 3 – Week 10
now, with the help of computers, we can find the value
of pi to many decimal places. See below…
HOW GOOD IS YOUR MEMORY? When Yr 8 maths
students were practising in class Auntie Judy was able
to remember the first two lines of pi, that is, 54 decimal
places. But… a student from Jannali HS was able to
recite pi to 120 decimal places!
The winner in our cluster was one of just 2 competitors
Con Gouskos (Pagewood PS) reciting pi to 18 decimal
places.
OTHER RESULTS:
We had three Rubik’s cube competitors: Logan
Christensen (Pagewood PS), Keanu Warren and Ms
Trikilis (MSHS). Keanu Warren (Year 10) was the
Rubik’s Cube Champion, completing the Rubik’s cube in
1 minute and 12 seconds with a close second by Ms
Trikilis who managed to complete her cube in just over
3 minutes. It was an exciting challenge and fun to cheer
on our English Head teacher.
The TOP NUMBER CRUNCHER trophy was won by LEON
JOHAN MOSI (Yr 6), once again from Pagewood Primary
School with a close second by our own ROWDRY
MORIOM (Yr 7). Congratulations to all the winners who
received a Rubik’s Cube and competitors who received
certificates of merit/participation and chocolate
Finally, each school will send their top number cruncher
to the GRAND FINAL in November, at the Powerhouse
Museum. We wish them lots of luck and fun with their
Deadly Kids Awards
Matraville Sports High School
Monday, 8 October 2012
On Friday 7 th September I had the
privilege of attending the Deadly
Kids doing well awards at the
Carriage Works Theatre. The awards
acknowledge students from across the Sydney Region
who have been nominated by their school as doing well,
achieving and displaying outstanding talent.
This year the student chosen to represent Matraville
Sports High School was Jordan Ardler. Jordan has
consistently shown her dedication to achievement and
to her studies having attained significant accolades in
writing and the Arts.
Jordan represented the school with pride and
distinction and the presentation of her award was
witnessed by a large audience including members of her
family.
The awards were opened with the assistance of two of
our students. Brock Tutt and Dean Kelly welcomed the
audience with an excellent performance of the
didgeridoo which set a positive tone for the
proceedings.
Also, our school captain Danny Allende gave an
engaging and moving speech outlining his achievements
and the role the school has played in assisting him to
achieve his goals and aspirations.
The afternoon highlighted the outstanding successes of
Aboriginal students throughout the Sydney region.
Industrial Arts Department Update
This term has been a very exciting term with an
accumulation of wonderful news. The school applied
earlier in the year for a grant to fund a joint school &
community program through the NAB Bank Schools
First Funding. This is a national awards program that
recognises and rewards outstanding school‐community
partnerships which are having a positive impact on
students beyond the classroom.
Description of the award
NAB Schools First recognises that the education of
young people rests on the shoulders of the entire
community, which is why these awards support
Australian schools working in partnership with their
communities to help young people realise their
potential. NAB Schools First is an inclusive awards
program which supports schools of varying shapes and
sizes in metropolitan, regional and remote areas across
the public, catholic and independent sectors.
Below is a summary of the details of this joint
school/community program with the judges’ comments
on the proposal.
School: Matraville Sports High School (NSW)
Partners: NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service,
Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH), NSW
Department of Premier and Cabinet
Title of the Project: Bare Island and Environment
Preservation
Year 7‐12 students in this small school, with a high
proportion of indigenous and Pacific Islander students
will work with the NSW National Parks and Wildlife
Service to enhance and preserve local heritage and
environment assets including an historic island fort.
A range of cross‐curricula learning activities have been
built into the program, which include restoration
activities and local bush tucker identification.
Integration of new and meaningful community‐based
learning project activities into the school's syllabus is
expected to engage normally disengaged students,
expose them to new career opportunities, enhance
their skills and encourage them to complete their
secondary education.
Page 5
Monday, 8 October 2012
Indigenous rangers will act as mentors and educators in
local bush tucker and historical National Park sites.
Student participation in the project will assist the NPWS
to undertake projects and encourage them to take
responsibility for the preservation of community assets,
and assist them to achieve commitment in their 2012‐
2013 Works Plan to "explore and develop relationships
with local schools".
What the judges said:
“A good combination of expertise from both sides with
mutual benefits ‐ a sustainable plan with effects that
will reach beyond the partners to benefit the local
community in the form of enhancement and
preservation of local heritage and environment”.
Mr Docos, Head Teacher Industrial Arts
Year 7 2013 Transition Program
The Industrial Arts
Faculty hosted Year
6 students from the
local primary
schools as part of
our taster courses
on offer from the
Industrial Arts
Faculty.
The students were briefed about how to begin making
their own simple ring. The students were introduced to
the workshops and shown a presentation on WH&S
procedures and rules. All of the Year 6 students were
very responsive and answered all of the safety
questions very well.
The primary school
visitors were shown
how to shape their
rings, using a range
of metal hand‐
tools. This then
lead to the
students being able
to stamp their
initials into their
rings.
The school and the partner organisation are Once this process was complete the students were
collaborating on the planning of a range of activities, shown the process of sanding and producing a smooth
starting with more easily implemented activities that
will have a direct impact using existing resources.
final finish.
Several senior students
Daniel Robinson and
Hayden McCulloch in
Year 11/12 Metals
Engineering and
Construction were
fantastic helpers.
These senior students
worked with the primary school students assisting and
guiding them with practical procedures and techniques.
The final process was the cleaning up procedures which
is a workshop requirement.
All of the students enjoyed their time in the Industrial
Arts workshops.
Support Faculty Department Update
Busy! Busy! Busy! That’s the only way to describe the
hive of activity that has been the Support faculty during
term 3.
As I speak the entire Support
faculty is on its way to a Special
Olympics event at Marrickville
PCYC to participate in a
Basketball and Athletics
competition against students
from other support faculties and
special schools from the surrounding area.
Unfortunately, the only photo we have for today’s
event is of the excitement on the bus just before
leaving so I’m including some
photos from last term’s Special
Olympics skills training session
at the same venue to give you
an idea of the fun we had.
Assembly item (S1) ‐ On
Tuesday this week S1
performed the “Recycling”
song for the school
assembly. S1 are in charge
of school recycling as part
of their Science activities.
They constructed a recycling truck and musical
instruments out of recycled materials and played a
recorded voice‐over (incorporating the student’s voices)
prior to the item. Isaiah Carter played the didgeridoo as
students assembled in
the hall and Christopher
Averkos played the piano
beautifully as students
dispersed from the hall.
Daniel Hilliar‐Hayes
(guitarist extra‐ordinaire)
and Monica Tinoco‐
Eusebio (vocalist) were unable to do their item due to
time constraints but we’re really looking forward to
hearing them at a future assembly.
Work Experience updates ‐ Below are some pictures
taken recently of support students at work experience:
Tyson Gold at East Coast Smash Repairs; Maddison
Miller‐Holmes at “PetsRus” at Eastgardens; Kevin Jessop
at Windgap horticulture group where he uses the lawn
mower and leaf blower as part of his activities with the
gardening group.
STOP PRESS – I’m advised Matraville has come first in A new Support faculty work experience group will start
the Javelin and Relay competitions and has won 2 in term 4 at Coles, Eastgardens under the supervision of
Basketball games with more to come. Special mentions Ms Malouf. The students participating will be Hamish
were made of: Isaiah Carter (Relay), Felicity Carr Thorp and Christopher Averkos.
(basketball) and Blake Errington (Javelin).
The Franklins work group is now being supervised by
Ms Elder (S3) while Mr McGrane returns to school to
supervise an “in school” work group consisting of S3
students (Daniel, Rhys, Tyisha, Jarrod) who are unable
to participate in “community‐based” work experience
because of mainstream commitments or other reasons.
Matraville Sports High School

Issue 6 - Term 3 – Week 10
A Certificate 1 in Work Skills course will be held at
Windgap next term for students from Matraville and JJ
Cahill high school support faculties. Selected students
will be advised shortly.
Coffee Club changes – after several years of running the
Coffee Club as a “morning tea” work experience activity
there has been a re‐vamp and re‐think and it’s now
running as a “lunch‐time” activity which has involved
lots of planning by the staff and student about changes
to menus, cooking arrangements, etc. So far, so good!
TAFE – Some existing Tafe courses are coming to an end
soon and participating support students will explore
alternatives such as work experience, further TAFE
study in 2013, etc. Other support students are applying
for Term 4 TAFE “Taster” courses such as Building skills
and Music career pathways. I wish those students the
best of luck in their application.
Fun photos – Just to show we have a lot of fun in the
Support faculty I’ve attached some really nice recent
photos! I hope you enjoy them. By the way can you
guess who’s wearing the “Mr Stewart” mask?
Support Faculty classes 2013 – the school has recently
been advised that it will lose one (IO) class in 2013. This
will mean we will lose one teacher and one aide from
our current staff. The remaining classes will be 1 x IO/IS
class: 1 x IO class and 2 x IM classes. We will keep
students and parents updated re what this means for
the organisation for the Support faculty in 2013.
