SHANMUGAM MANJUNATH (1978-2005)
Class of 2003
Manjunath, or Machaan as he was popularly known among his friends in IIM Lucknow, has
immortalized the core values that are ingrained in every student of IIM Lucknow – integrity, sincerity
and determination.
He was a terrific singer, full of verve and heart and performed as part of the campus band Three.Four.
Manjunath's courageous act of taking on fuel adulterators may have cost him his life, but also ensured
that the whole country woke up to the plight of those who fight corruption. His unfortunate death
caused an uproar amongst students across IIMs and IITs and in no time garnered unprecedented
unanimous nation-wide support.
The Manjunath Shanmugam Trust (MST) was formed soon after by members of the international IIM
alumni network, which fought to ensure justice prevailed with the trial being completed in a record nine
months. The efforts of several RTI activist working with the MST has resulted in the cabinet passing the
Public Interest Disclosures Bill, 2010 in Aug 2010, which will become a shield for whistle-blowers and
people who expose corruption and scams.

DIRECTOR'S
MESSAGE
From a modest beginning in 1984-85,
operating out of a make shift
arrangement in the heart of Lucknow city,
IIM Lucknow has now transformed into a
world-class institute with multiple
campuses and numerous international
linkages.
Lord Chesterfield once famously said:
“The knowledge of the world is only to be
acquired in the world and not in a closet”.
With this philosophy, IIM Lucknow has
encouraged holistic learning among its
students. Beyond the walls of the
classrooms; over and above the
functional domains of b-school subjects;
IIM Lucknow has embraced diversity now
well reflected in its students and
illustrious alumni.
For 26 years, the flame of ambition,
determination and leadership, ignited at
IIM Lucknow, has been the candle in the
wind for our torchbearers. Many of them
have achieved unparalleled success in
t h e w o r l d ' s m o s t r e c o g n i z e d
organisations displaying enthusiasm,
level-headedness, commitment and
ethos. Others have built on the training
imparted at IIM-L, to initiate their own
ventures in fields as varied as education,
market research, music & film.
In the pages that follow, we showcase
these individuals who have left their
imprints on the world. This is by no means
an exhaustive list, rather a sampling of
the many achievers who have graduated
from this fine institution. For batches both
present and future, these stellar
examples will serve as a source of
inspiration, propelling them to the great
heights that the world has come to expect
of IIM Lucknow and its alumni.
The approach we adopted for analyzing and discussing different cases
in IIML was really handy in corporate life when faced with real life
problems. I could apply these learnings to analyze problems strategically
and in totality while appreciating different perspectives/ views. The lessons
in team work/ collaboration along with communication/ presentation skills
that I learnt in IIML were extremely useful in the daily corporate life
in the world to IIML. I also had a great time as a part of our
rock band 3.4 Km along with a bunch of talented musicians
IIML played an extremely important role in the development of
my personality as it was the first time I had stayed away from
home. Our batch was extremely friendly hence even an introvert
like me made friends easily. However, the most important lesson
for me was the realization that money is not the barometer for
determining brilliance, success, relationship and above all
happiness. Having come from Mumbai, this was a big eye-opener
and confidence booster for me in those days. The stint at IIML was
one of the most pleasant experiences for me in this lifetime
The infrastructure and academic ambience at IIM-L even then
was excellent - very conducive to a well rounded management
education. I think those who pass out of IIM-L are stable and
grounded, well read and sensible, and at the same time nurture this
burning desire to succeed. You won't find them asking for a pay hike
or a bigger role the moment they walk into your organization - they
know they have to earn their stripes - and they will
Looking back, I feel it gave me a great opportunity to
do more with less. Space was less but the learning
opportunity was immense which overshadowed
everything else. I think the institute had a lot to
contribute to what I am today
I remember my good days with IIML with nostalgia: the initial
Manfest and finally the final-year placement sessions!
We were a lucky batch, the last batch to operate out of the old aliganj campus
Class of 1993
Head, Planning & Analysis, J P Morgan Chase, Singapore
IIM Lucknow has been the keystone of my career; the dual emphasis
which the Institute works with concentrates not only on providing
management related skills and knowledge, but also helps develop better
learning, analytical, and adaptive skills. IIML calls this "learning to learn"
and with the extensive demands on managers in the current
scenario, this skillset is very much required
SAMEER BHARGAVA
Class of 1997
Chief Technology Officer, Pure Safety, Nashville
Beyond all the decision making frameworks and functional
expertise, IIM Lucknow, by way of surrounding me with brilliant
teachers and students, imparted me with a certain humility which has
allowed me to introspect, find chinks in my armor, mend them and
grow and learn every day
The variety of opportunity that IIML brought with it meant that
diverse people created their own ways to experience the 2 years. With
every passing batch, the family of IIML is growing. We are no longer a
new kid on the block. Alumni strength can be felt across industries,
corporates and entrepreneurial ventures. I am confident that as an
institute we will create further milestones which all of us will be proud
about
The time spent at IIM- L was two of the most enriching and rewarding
years of my life. It wasn’t just the curriculum and learning that prepared
us for the Corporate World, but also the fact that we were in an
environment where we not just studied but also lived together, with a
diverse set of people who possessed intelligence and skills in different
Whenever I think of Lucknow and my stay at IIM, I am
reminded of great fellow students and very
approachable faculty, who never behaved like people
sitting on a pedestal distributing knowledge but more
like people who despite having more knowledge were
ready to be challenged and debated with on all topics
under the sun. I personally believe IIM had a tremendous
influence on my career. Other than the knowledge of
how businesses function I think the biggest benefit I got
during my stay at IIM was that it fine tuned and prepared
me for the business world
foundation, the rigour got me ready for the
corporate life ahead, and the wide & capable peer
balanced perspective. The birthday bumps, the
mid-night maggis, the dot.com craze are memories
forever. Given my wife and brother are both from
IIML as well, they say, it runs in my family
One cannot forget the numerous baddy court parties, the
night outs, the trips to Ganj, the thick fog and the numerous
other things that make it the quintessential L experience.
The place has improved tremendously. The infrastructure is so
much better and there are more courses offered as well. We
did not have computers in all rooms, email was still relatively
new. No Cafe Coffee Days or mobile phones/laptops. As I
It’s been years since I passed out, but it still seems so fresh. Of
all the years spent in classes, it is those in Lucknow that I remember
the most. Our old campus, apartments that served as hostels, a
library situated elsewhere, and so on. Back then calling back home
was a walk to a PCO, long waits, and speed talk to save money.
Satellite TV hadn’t arrived, and PC had to be booted up from a disk
which kept getting corrupted. Our new campus was still a place
under construction and enroute were egg paranthas on the
highway dhaba. We’d roam the new campus to see the progress of
construction. Happily ours was the first batch whose convocation
took place from this new campus!
Apart from giving me excellent faculty (each of whom I
business management, IIML gave me excellent access to
resources and a great set of batch-mates from whom I
Iearnt much much more. Grueling and rigorous schedule
along with an outcome driven approach; always adopting
an innovative approach to problem solving and learning
that there is no substitute for hard and smart work - Things
that I picked up from IIML
We loved the highly-charged discussions on academic and
other issues of the day in small and not-so-small groups. I think the
key was the kind of stimulating environment it provided in shaping
our behavior and actions, which we still find relevant in our
professional lives. Despite the size of the batches even then, the
faculty-student relationship had a surprisingly personal touch
Being from an early batch at IIML, the batch size was small and the class
L provided the foundation for a career in finance and general management. I
am proud to be an alumni and with all the developments since we left the
