Castle Rock Ranks #19 in CNN’s Top Places to Live
CNN Money confirmed what Meadows residents already know,
that Castle Rock is one of the top places in the country to live.
CNN Money employed a team of seven reporters who spent
months combing through reams of data to identify small towns
(those with populations of less than 50,000) across the country
that stand out in the qualities American families care about most.
The goal was to find the best combination of job opportunities,
fiscal strength, top-notch schools, safe streets, good healthcare,
cultural and outdoor activities, and even nice weather. Castle
Rock ranked Number 19 on CNN Money’s MONEY’s 100 Best
Places to Live based on that criterion. (Demographic information
Community Spotlight: National Night Out in Fuller Bluff Neighborhood
When Meadows Resident Jamie Rumph read about National
Night Out in The Grange Program Guide, she took the initiative
to create a flyer and went door to door with her kiddos in tow to
all of her Fuller Bluff Neighbors to generate interest in having a
“Night Out” right on Broadleaf Loop. As interested email replies
started to pour in, she was then able to use those emails to
spread the word efficiently that they would indeed proceed with
an August 2 potluck in celebration of the 28th Annual National
Night Out. When the weather turned stormy the day of the event,
Jamie’s husband Jeremy was able to borrow tents from work so
that the event could go on! Twenty-five families showed up that
night and while they did not remain dry, they did have a great time
together. True community spirit was fostered that evening as the
families ate together, shared conversations with long-time neighbors,
and forged new friendships with families who had recently
moved to the neighborhood. The kids played freeze tag, rode
their bikes and splashed in the rain. The Meadows would like to
thank the Rumph family and all of their neighbors who helped
make this event a success!
The Meadows Welcomes Surf Shack Yogurt Shop
Located at 3980 E. Limelight Ave. #A, residents now have a place
right in The Meadows to head to when a sweet-tooth craving hits,
and it won’t pack nearly the calorie-punch as ice-cream! Serving
multiple flavors of frozen yogurt with dozens of toppings to
choose from, Surf Shack Yogurt Shop opened in style on August
20, with a huge Grand Opening Celebration that was attended
by 2,500 people. Owner Chris De Diego posted on Surf Shack’s
Facebook page, “Our goal with Surf Shack Yogurt was to create
Castle Rock Adventist Health Campus Phase Two Expansion
Centura Health recently announced plans to expand its Castle
Rock Adventist Health Campus to include a 212,000-square-foot,
full-service hospital. The $128 million, Phase Two campus expansion
is expected to open in the Summer of 2013. It will house 50
licensed beds and a full complement of hospital services including
intensive care, medical/surgical, obstetrics, orthopedics and cardiology.
When both phases are complete, the project is expected
to bring more than 300 new jobs to the Castle Rock community.
“The original plan was to expand our Castle Rock campus to
include a full-service hospital in three to five years. But, the level
of interest, excitement, and support for this project within the community
has been so overwhelming we decided to immediately
move forward with the hospital phase of the project,” said Gary
Campbell, president and CEO of Centura Health. Phase One of
the project, an emergency room and imagining center opened to
the public on September 7, 2011.
Volunteer Coordinator for The Meadows Hiking Club and
Meadows Resident
I want to start out by thanking all of you who joined our hiking club
and have participated in many of the hikes we completed this
year. It has been an exciting year with many achievements by our
members and, most importantly, we have seen and experienced
much of the beauty that Colorado offers.
The purpose of The Meadows Hiking Club is to provide an opportunity
for those interested in hiking to meet other hikers on
a regular basis and experience a variety of different hikes. Our
hiking experience will range from less strenuous evening hikes to
more aggressive and difficult weekend hikes up some of Colorado’s
highest mountain peaks.
Many of you know that our schedule has been to hike twice a
week, Thursday evenings and on Saturdays. Yes, we really do
meet at 6 a.m. on Saturdays for our hike! I think we have only
cancelled our scheduled hikes four times this year due to inclement
weather.
So here is how we did:
We currently have 54 members in our club who have participated
in hikes this year. We have completed a total of 36 hikes since
April, when we began our weekly hikes, and we have hiked on 28
different trails. We have completed three climbs, summiting four
of Colorado’s 14er peaks, and we have one more trip planned (as
of this writing) with the hope of summiting one more 14er peak
this season. We had 21 members join us on our first 14er climb
and all 21 completed the climb, including those who were attempting
their first 14er. The 14er peaks we have done so far are
Meadows Hiking Club
Grays/Torreys (two in one day), Mt. Massive (Colorado’s second
highest peak) and Humboldt Peak.
I would like to congratulate and recognize the following members
who completed their first 14er this year with our club.
Dale Wegner Doug Bechtel
Lauren Ludwig Ruben Carbonell
Timmie Riley James Wire
Kathy Jensen Tona Wiegel
Linda Ferguson Tom Ferguson
We will have a fall meeting on Wednesday, October 19, from
7-8:30 p.m. at The Grange. I hope that many of you will join us on
some of our hikes or snowshoe trips this year and in 2012. If you
have questions, you may email me at RiNolan@attglobal.net.
MEADOWS NEWS
The Town of Castle Rock requires that any domestic animal in
public places be under the complete control of the owner and
dogs must be on a leash when off of the owner’s property. Public
places include, but are not limited to: public property, common
areas of private property, parking lots, churches, cemeteries,
parks, schools and swimming areas.
Within The Meadows, dogs must always be on a leash in all
areas of The Meadows when off an owner’s property, including
all neighborhood pocket parks and the new Upland Park Neighborhood
in the Town Center. The only exception is to this rule is
inside Wiggly Fields Dog Park in The Meadows where dogs may
be off leash in a designated, enclosed dog park, if accompanied
by a person capable of controlling the animal off leash.
Keeping your pet on a leash will also help keep them safe from
coyotes. This summer there have been several reports of coyotes
near the Native Legend Open Space and Trail. In addition, the
coyotes were aggressive towards pets, especially small dogs,
and at least one dog was attacked. If you see a coyote, please
call the non-emergency number for the Castle Rock police at
303.663.6100 and report it.
In addition to a leash, cleaning up after your pet’s mess, wherever
you are, is also a courtesy that all residents are asked to do.
There are numerous pet waste stations throughout the community
to promote cleaning up after pets, but it is the responsibility of
the pet owner to clean up after the pet, no matter the location, by
being prepared to do so. Bringing along a plastic bag is a small
effort but will create a big impact on the cleanliness of common
areas throughout The Meadows. Residents are encouraged to
report any pet stations within the common areas that are found to
A Dogs must be on a leash when off the owner’s property.
The leash cannot be greater than eight feet long and must be
controlled by a person physically able to control the animal.
A No animal owner shall permit any animal to cause an
annoyance for more than five minutes at any time through
repeated barking or other like sounds that can be heard
beyond the boundary lines of the owner’s property.
A Persons cannot keep more than three dogs or five cats
or a total of six animals within Town limits.
A It shall be the duty of every owner of a dog or cat over
six months of age living in the Town to have such a dog or
cat vaccinated for rabies by a licensed veterinarian or animal
health clinic.
Dogs Must be On a Leash in Castle Rock
What to do if you encounter a coyote:
• Be as big and loud as possible
• Wave your arms, clap and throw objects at the coyote such
as rocks
• Shout in a loud and authoritative voice
• Do not run or turn your back on a coyote
• Face the coyote and slowly back away
• Call the non-emergency police at 303.663.6100 as soon as
you are safely away from the coyote
be in need of trash removal. While these are emptied on a regular
schedule, some stations may be more heavily used than others.
If you have identified a need in an area where there is no station,
please send the suggested location to RHaigh@MeadowsLink.com
and The MNC will consider the recommendation.
Following these requirements will aid in keeping pets and their
owners safe and keeping our community’s numerous residential
neighborhoods, parks and the expansive open space areas
enjoyable for all residents.
If you have lost or found a dog or cat, call the Castle Rock Police
non-emergency number, 303.663.6100. You also may want to
call the Buddy Center animal shelter lost and found department in
Castle Rock, 303.696.4941, ext. 207.
A Any owner whose
animal bites a person shall
immediately notify the animal
control officer or Police
Department.
A American Pit Bull Terriers,
American Staffordshire
Terriers, Staffordshire Bull
Terriers or any dogs displaying
the majority of physical
traits of any one or more of
these breeds are prohibited
within Town limits.

One of the best perks available to residents of The Meadows is
access to a variety of programming and events. Most of these
events require the time, labor and assistance from volunteers.
• Let it breath
(help snow
Aerating - Aerating is one of the most important and beneficial maintenance tasks for a healthy lawn. When soil is compacted it will cause your lawn to thin and
eventually the root system may die. Aerating will break up the soil, making it easier for the root network to spread. Aerating also allows water and nutrients to
reach the roots. Use a deep plug aerator for the best results. The best time to aerate lawns is in the autumn before the first frost and again in the spring, once
4" to 6" plugs can be pulled.
Seeding - If your lawn is thin or you have bare spots lightly rake and sprinkle in some grass seed. The best time to seed is during early spring or early autumn.
Mowing - Mow no shorter than 3 inches and never remove more than 1/3 of the grass blade at a time. A longer turf will shade the soil and promote a deep root
network that absorbs and conserves water. Taller grass is also one of the best methods of weed control. Don’t bag the clippings; leaving clippings recycles as
much as 15% of the lawn fertilizer. Remember a sharp blade = a sharp lawn.
Weeds - Spring and autumn season weed control is easier and cheaper than fighting weeds after they pop up. Apply a pre-emergent herbicide in the spring to
prevent grassy weeds like crabgrass. Apply broad leaf weed control in the autumn for a dandelion free spring. Weeds need sun, heat, and bare or weakened
turf to sprout. A healthy tall lawn is the best defense against weeds.
Fertilize - Fertilizing your lawn provides necessary nutrients and minerals. Follow the feeding schedule above and use a slow-release formula. Keep it light in the
spring with a combination formula of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. In the autumn, apply a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer to your lawn to help it
through the dormant months. Don't forget the trees and shrubs!
Disease and Fungus - Let your lawn breath – it’s dormant, not dead. Remove autumn debris and help the snow melt by spreading out snow piles and removing
snow from cold spots. Prolonged periods of damp unaired turf are a breeding ground for lethal lawn disease and fungus.
Mites on Turf Grass - The best defense against a mite infestation are a healthy lawn. Mites thrive on drought stressed turf lawns. Make sure your lawn receives
adequate water; this includes fall and winter watering as needed.
Watering/Irrigation - 1. Regularly check your irrigation system for uniform and efficient coverage. 2. Water deeper and less frequently. Deeper watering
promotes deeper roots where it’s moist even if the top soil dries out. 3. Keep the lawn at least 3-4 inches long. 4. Skip the lawn fertilizer in the extreme heat.
5. Water in the early morning, which will fight evaporation. Be sure to always follow the Town of Castle Rock published watering schedule.
Trees and Shrubs - Deciduous trees should have dead and diseased limbs removed in late March or April. New trees should be planted in the spring to allow
plenty of time to establish prior to the winter.
A thriving healthy turf lawn going into the Winter ensures a healthy beautiful Spring lawn!
MNC Architectural Guidelines Are Being Revised
Homeowners can expect a new version of the Guidelines to be reviewed and approved by The
Board of Governors early in 2012. The most current version of this and all legal documents for
your association are available 24-7 on MeadowsLink.com.
MNC ARC is Seeking New Member
The MNC Architectural Review Committee (ARC) has an immediate vacancy for a new member
on the committee. The purpose of the committee is to accept and review applications for
improvements to properties within The MNC. An ability to read plot plans is helpful, and a familiarity
of the Architectural Guidelines is preferred. Meetings are held once a month and usually
twice a month from April through the summer. The Committee would like to fill this position as
soon as possible.
If you would like to be considered for this volunteer position, please send a brief email describing
created to outline the approval process and contains links to important documents such as the
Architectural Review Application (ARA), the Architectural Guidelines, a page with Frequently
