Capital and
of life
Millennium Stadium

Welcome Croeso
Cardiff, the capital city,
is the perfect gateway to
the history, culture, language
and landscapes of Wales.
The sounds of the city are a
mixture, with two languages
– one shared with half the
world, and another, ancient,
tongue that belongs to
Wales.
The language sets the scene
for a city of contrasts, where
the innovative architecture
of the Millennium Stadium
and the Wales Millennium
Centre sit alongside the
2000-year-old grandeur of
Cardiff Castle. The castle
rests on Roman foundations,
Cardiff Bay, the city’s
revitalised dockland area,
is now one of Europe’s most
exciting waterfront
developments, with a thriving
leisure quarter. Dominating
the Bay skyline is the Wales
Millennium Centre, home to
seven arts organisations,
including the worldrenowned
John Wake at the Water Tower in Cardiff Bay
4
John Wake is a former detective inspector who
policed the Tiger Bay area of Cardiff. He now
specialises in promoting anything to do with
Cardiff – particularly its heritage.
My Cardiff gem… Llandaff Cathedral
Because…
It offers one of the major clues to the worldwide
phenomenon of King Arthur and to
Shakespeare’s plays King Lear and Cymbeline.
The cathedral holds history and character of
importance and interest not just to Wales but to
the whole world.
Window to the past
and an eye on the future
Don’t be surprised if you
spot Doctor Who emerging
from the Tardis – Cardiff’s a
bit like that, as a major
centre for the TV, film and
creative industries. In fact,
Cardiff has always been a
leader in its field. Borrow
the Tardis from the visiting
Doctor to skip back in time
to the 19th century, and
you will find Cardiff was a
leading coal exporting
port.
What is now Cardiff Bay, one
of Europe’s most extensive
waterfront developments,
was then a major port
handling millions of tons of
coal every year. The Coal
Exchange, now being
transformed into modern
apartments and offices, hit
the headlines in 1907 when
the world’s first ever £1m
deal was struck there.
Cardiff’s growing status was
beefed up with the
construction of an imposing
neo-classical civic centre
crafted in gleaming Portland
stone. One of the focal
points of the 60-acre site is
the eclectic National
Museum Cardiff, the lawns
of which host the ‘Big
Weekend’ element of
Cardiff’s upbeat annual
Summer Festival.
One of the main
beneficiaries of the coal
boom was the Bute family -
then owners of Cardiff
Castle. The 3rd Marquess
spent a chunk of his newfound
disposable income
commissioning the
renowned architect William
Burges to oversee the lavish
renovation of Cardiff Castle.
Within the castle’s tall gothic
towers, no expense was
spared in the opulent
refurbishment of the
apartments.
What was once the castle
playground, Bute Park, is now
a magnificent public space,
the ‘green lung’ that helps
make Cardiff one of the
lushest cities in the UK. Its
sweeping lawns, herbaceous
borders, and extensive
arboretum of mature trees
provide an inner city habitat
for many species including
the green woodpecker;
Europe’s smallest bird, the
Gold Crest; herons, owls and
squirrels.
T: +44(0)870 121 1258 E: visitor@cardiff.gov.uk
Flowing through Bute Park
is the river Taff, now running
clean and fresh since the
demise of the coal industry
and providing a home to
salmon and trout. Every
autumn, walkers flock to
Blackweir bridge in the hope
of catching the salmon leap
on their pilgrimage to their
spawning grounds way
upstream.
On their way to spawn, they
pass Llandaff Cathedral,
another of Cardiff’s historical
links and one of the oldest
Christian sites in Britain. The
present church dates from
1107.
Susan Greensmith is a member of the Friends of
the National Museum Wales. She is a volunteer
guide spending time sharing the secrets of the
museum with visitors.
My Cardiff gem… The Iron Age ‘firedog’
Because…
The museum has beautiful gold and wonderful
pictures but this Iron Age find says more about
the wealth and standing of its owner than
anything else in the collections. It is one of a
pair found in a bog, obviously deliberately
given to the gods; the best of its kind in Europe.
*Firedogs are decorated stands used to contain wood
burning in a fireplace.
Sharing sisters
a wealth of fine art
Thanks to wealthy spinster
sisters, Gwendoline and
Margaret Davies, the
National Museum Cardiff
houses one of the most
impressive collections of
Impressionist paintings
outside Paris. The heiress
sisters reputedly inherited
£500,000 each - a fabulous
figure in 1908 - allowing
them to amass one of the
finest art collections in
the UK.
Part of the collection will
spend spring and summer of
2009 on tour in the USA but
Cardiff will still reserve a
corner for the sisters’ works.
The museum also showcases
a serious 20th century
collection including Augustus
and Gwen John, Stanley
Spencer, Eric Gill and
Barbara Hepworth. Keep an
eye open for a bronze cast
of Rodin’s sensual sculpture,
The Kiss. The National
Museum Cardiff is renowned
for its Archaeology section,
where everyday objects and
beautiful artefacts tell the
stories of Welsh people and
explore links with the past.
Public Art Walk
Tour the thought provoking
pieces of artwork in Cardiff
Bay, among them ‘People
Like Us’ a bronze sculpture of
a couple and their dog that
celebrates the lives of
ordinary Bay people. The
futuristic Water Tower, a 70 ft
vertical stainless steel tower
that shimmers as water
cascades down its surface,
and the touching Merchant
Seafarer’s War Memorial, that
movingly features a timeless
face on the hull of a
beached ship. Combine
food and culture with Craft
Chapter Arts Centre.
Chapter has earned a
reputation as one most
diverse arts centres in
Europe, and combines
theatre, art, film, music
and literature into one
venue.
G39 in Wyndham arcade,
covers three floors and is
renowned internationally
as one of Cardiff’s leading
contemporary artspaces.
The gallery often exhibits
un-established artists and
recent art graduates
alongside international
artists, and focuses on
installation, photography,
video and sculpture.
For art, music and dance,
check out the Gate Arts
world’s largest gay and
showings of the 2009 shortlist.
she has been working with Clwyd Theatr Cymru.
My Cardiff gem… Creative young people
Because…
They’re the future. You can see their work
Professional theatre, opera
of the highest quality, visiting
ballet, classical music, and
contemporary circus acts all
mingle in Cardiff to make the
city a well-rounded venue
for entertaining evenings out.
The city’s newest venue is
the swish Wales Millennium
Centre (WMC), a lively
performing arts centre that
also serves as a home to
among others the Welsh
National Opera and
Diversions, the contemporary
dance company of Wales.
The BBC National Orchestra
of Wales has also taken up
residence in this showpiece
Centre.
Recent WMC programmes
have featured Circus Oz,
Scottish Ballet and the 50th
anniversary West Side Story
production. This year the
centre marks its 5th birthday
with a superb programme of
opera, dance and
Norwegian Church, Cardiff Bay
blockbuster musicals. Free
lunchtime concerts in the
foyer also attract a crowd.
Contemporary theatre can
be found at the Sherman, a
venue that also caters for kids
with its Sherman Sherbets
drama workshops for 4-6
year-olds and 7-10 year-olds.
Slightly more outré
performances find their way
also has a good gallery,
cinema, restaurant and bar.
from Seven Brides for Seven
performances, including
lunchtime concerts, and is
the home of the Welsh Proms.
You’ll also find an impressive
series of tribute acts and
bands there.
In Cardiff Bay, there is
entertainment with more of
an edge at The Glee Club
and there are bands with a
more modern – and local –
feel at The Point, an
atmospheric venue located
in a converted church.
Also housed in a former
ecclesiastical structure is
the Norwegian Church Arts
programme from world to
folk to jazz.
For a light-hearted evening
It’s fun. You can play with all sorts of things there
Cardiff Big Weekend Boulders indoor climbing centre

Children’s favourites
indoors and out
When the sun shines,
entertaining children is easy
– and Adventure Cardiff, the
city’s water activity centre,
can offer canoeing, sailing
and other adventurous stuff.
If the children prefer to be
indoors, Cardiff is wellequipped
to stave off the
cries of ‘when are we going
home?’
At Techniquest, the UK’s most
visited science discovery
centre, they can fire a rocket,
race an electric car, watch
a bubble race, or test their
reaction times. The 160 or so
hands-on exhibits do a pretty
good job of beguiling
juvenile punters and adults
alike. Visit the planetarium for
a space trek through the
solar system. Discover where
the asteroids hang out and
why Uranus spins on its side.
Also located in Cardiff Bay is
the largest swimming facility
in the UK, Cardiff
Dalek at Doctor Who Up-Close
International Pool. This venue
boasts among others a
spectacular leisure pool,
incorporating a beach area,
flumes, space ball area, lazy
river and bubble lounger.
The National Museum Cardiff
has a stunning natural history
section: follow the poignant
story of the stranded
leatherback turtle, witness
how the basking shark,
cavernous mouth agape,
filters its food, or follow Wales’
incredible journey from the
Big Bang to the present day,
meeting dinosaurs and
mammoths along the way.
And at the newly-renovated
Doctor Who Up-Close
exhibition in Cardiff Bay, your
kids can come face to face
with the good doctor’s foes,
including an ice warrior,
Craig Campbell at the Millennium Stadium
Craig Campbell has been a Millennium
Stadium groundsman for two and a half years.
His role involves keeping the Millennium Stadium
pitch in optimal health with the correct food,
water, air and exercise.
My Cardiff gem… The players' tunnel at the
Because…
Even though I walk down it every day, it still
sends a shiver down my spine. You should try it.
You can imagine you’re on your way to play for
your club or country in your chosen sport. For
me I would play rugby for Scotland, my country
of birth, or Wales, my adopted home.
Sporting capital
something for everyone
Cardiff, already designated a
European City of Sport for
2009, has notched up a fine
reputation as a sporting
capital thanks to hosting a
variety of major events such
as the 1999 and 2007 Rugby
World Cup, the FA Cup, and
the Wales Rally GB.
The Millennium Stadium has
the distinction of being one
of the few stadiums in the
heart of a city - and the
frisson of excitement
generated by a big sporting
occasion permeates through
the shopping streets. The
joyous carnivals following
international rugby fare for
2009. Wales Rally GB returns
to the city in October 2009,
stage at the Millennium
Stadium.
The stadium has been
earmarked as a venue for
some of the events
associated with the London
2012 Olympics too, and also
doubles up as a concert
venue, drawing in superstars
like Madonna and Bruce
Cricket fans can look forward
to an Ashes Test Match at
Top of your wish list
Cardiff’s shopping paradise
Shopping is a mixture of
needs and wishes. For the
needs, any old town centre
will do. The wishes take a
little more invention – and in
Cardiff, there is no shortage
of innovative, and quirky
shops.
For a start, there are the
Victorian and Edwardian
arcades that link the city’s
main shopping streets. This is
where you’ll find niche shops,
boutiques and cafés with
character. It is here, too, that
the shops have a distinctive
Welsh flavour.
Visit High Street, Duke Street,
Morgan and Castle Arcades
for the latest designer
fashions in independent
stores such as Bejewelled by
Wooden Wood or Chessmen,
or rest your feet and enjoy
a meal in cafés such as
vegetarian café Crumbs, or
The Plan, which specialises in
organic and Fairtrade food
and drink. For more foodie
shopping try Wally's
Delicatessen in the Royal
Arcade, a feast for the eyes
as well as the taste-buds.
It is Cardiff’s ability to meet
needs and wishes that has
made it one of the UK’s top
10 shopping cities. St David’s,
Queen’s and Capitol
shopping centres combine
with Queen Street, Howell’s
department store, the Hayes
and the arcades, to give a
rich choice for those seeking
retail therapy.
Work nearing completion
in the city centre will see
Cardiff move into the UK’s
top five shopping cities, with
a second St David’s Centre,
a new café quarter and
department stores opening
during 2009.
Mimosa Kitchen & Bar,
Mermaid Quay

The very best taste
food and drink in Cardiff
If you’re busy, you need to
eat as you go but a leisurely
break in Cardiff will also give
the opportunity to pick from
the vast choice this modern,
upbeat, multicultural city has
to offer. Welsh produce:
organic lamb and beef,
handcrafted cheeses, patés,
preserves, artisan bread, the
freshest vegetables,
aromatic hop-rich beers,
and cider brewed from local
apples, are among the many
fine foods conjured up on
home turf.
Cardiff’s Central Market,
which is open from Monday
to Saturday, is famous for
stocking salt marsh Welsh
lamb - its deep, succulent
flavour gleaned from coastal
grazing is a favourite of top
chefs.
Eat your way
through the day
Kick off with a full breakfast
at Mimosa Kitchen & Bar, a
watering hole that prides
itself on using Welsh produce
wherever possible, before
setting off to explore Cardiff
Bay. If a stroll around the
public art trail, or a trip on
the waterbus has left you
peckish, then make a
beeline for Fabulous
Welshcakes in Mermaid
Quay, where, as well as
cooking up Welshcakes and
handmade chocolates, they
offer stylish gifts that are
locally-sourced and made to
the highest of standards.
In the city centre, Positano
will offer an Italian lunch to
set you up for an afternoon
visit to the castle. Zero
degrees in Westgate Street
brews its own beer right
before your eyes – and offers
a fresh, modern and inspiring
menu which includes a fine
selection of gourmet pizzas
and delicious salads. A tea or
coffee break could take you
tickets for a performance at
the Wales Millennium Centre,
then Woods Bar & Brasserie,
in the listed Pilotage Building,
is great for a pre-theatre
meal.
Want to linger longer?
Then make your way to the
Armless Dragon in Cathays,
just beyond the city centre,
where you can get a true
flavour of Wales and
contemporary Welsh cuisine.
Non-meat eaters could opt
Cardiff Bay Visitor Centre was
designed by avant-garde
architect William Alsop. His
idea was to create a giant
Water sports enthusiasts of all
kayaking, sailing, powerboating
performing arts centre, that
also serves as a home to
among others the Welsh
National Opera and
Diversions, the contemporary
dance company of Wales.
Roald Dahl Plass – the former
Welsh to its roots
Though very much part of
the United Kingdom, Wales
nevertheless has its own
language and culture.
Bilingual sign posts share the
job of guiding you round the
capital’s streets. Once in
decline, the Welsh language
is now spoken alongside
English, thanks to a
programme of promoting the
language over 30 years.
A short drive from the city
centre is St Fagans, National
History Museum, where the
nation’s customs are kept
alive in the style of a cultural
theme park. No plastic
replicas here, though. All the
buildings are real - 13th
century church, 15th century
farm houses, miners’
cottages – all moved brick
by brick and rebuilt in the
grounds of St Fagans Castle,
a late 16th century manor
house donated to the
people of Wales by the Earl
of Plymouth.
Visitors to Wales may want to
take intensive language
courses, especially when
they find out about the
National Language Centre
in the north of the country.
Learners spend a weekend,
a week or longer in a
splendid port village,
originally built to export the
granite that built the great
industrial cities of Northern
England.
The Welsh language is one of
the oldest spoken languages
in Europe, it is very similar to
Breton and Cornish, and is
the most popular of the
Celtic languages spoken
today, with more than a fifth
of the population of Wales
speaking Welsh.
The language has been
scattered around such
countries as Australia,
England, the United States
and Patagonia. In 1865, a
group travelled from Wales
to Gaiman, a small village in
the lower valley of the
Chubut River, Patagonia “to
protect a lifestyle that had
become endangered in their
native Wales.”
T: +44(0)870 121 1258 E: visitor@cardiff.gov.uk
For a chance of hearing the
Welsh language in one of its
most traditional forms, attend
the rehearsal of one of Cardiff's
Welsh Male Voice choirs. The
Welsh choral tradition began
when the coal industry was at its
height in the Welsh valleys.
Short breaks
A little local knowledge can
help you make the most of
your visit to Cardiff.
We have put together a few
ideas to introduce you to
some of the best of Cardiff’s
attractions – and there’s
much more information on
your own detailed visit.
Cardiff Orientation
& Sightseeing Tour
A guided tour of Cardiff
Castle, reconstructed for the
3rd Marquess of Bute by the
eccentric architect William
Burges, will give you a good
starting point in the heart of
the city. Follow this with a
guided walking tour of
Cardiff to learn how the city
evolved, or catch one of the
City Sightseeing buses from
outside the Castle entrance.
While in the city centre,
craft shops (ideal gifts), major
chains and quirky shops in
museum on the outskirts of
the city will show you how
Wales was through the ages.
You should set aside a full
day to get the best from the
National History Museum.
Sports Tour
The Millennium Stadium has
hosted the Rugby World Cup,
twice, six FA Cup Finals,
concerts by Madonna, U2
and a raft of other big
events.
You can get a look behind
the scenes by taking a
guided tour. The 74,000-seat
stadium is right in the city
centre, and has a
retractable roof and
removable turf which makes
it a versatile all year round
venue. Tee off in the
afternoon at one of the
great golf courses in
Southern Wales. The
surroundings of Cardiff offer
many complete golf
experiences. Alternatively,
go power boating or sailing
in Cardiff Bay.
Cardiff Heritage Tour
Castell Coch, on the
northern edge of the city, is
another collaboration
between the Marquess of
Bute and William Burges,
creating a lavishlydecorated
fairytale castle.
Return to Cardiff city centre
to visit the historic 11th
century Parish Church of St
John the Baptist and to have
lunch in its tea room in the
church vestry.
In the afternoon catch one
of the big surprises in Cardiff
– the art collection of the
Davies sisters at the National
Museum Cardiff. Gwendoline
and Margaret amassed one
of the finest Impressionist
Museum, Miner & Manor
Leave Cardiff behind and
take in the industrial heritage
of South Wales at the
Rhondda Heritage Park,
where an ex-miner will guide
you on a “cage” ride to the
pit bottom to explore the
mine’s underground
workings. Back at the
surface, enjoy a period
village street. Llancaiach
Fawr Manor can be your
next stop, a short distance
away. It is a 17th century
Civil War manor house,
where costumed servants
will share the gossip and
tales of life in the manor.
It’s one of Wales’ most
haunted houses, so if you
don’t make your getaway
before dusk, you may want
to hang around to catch a
glimpse of a spectre or two
or take part in a candle-lit
ghost tour (October-March).
These are just some of our
suggestions. Please call us
for more details or come to
help design a tour to suit
your tastes.
Cardiff Castle VAQAS Scheme Registered Museum
In the heart of the capital is Cardiff Castle - a truly remarkable
site with a history that spans 2000 years; Roman soldiers slept
here, noble knights held court here and the Bute family with
extraordinary wealth and vision transformed the Castle into a
romantic Victorian fantasy. Architect William Burges created
the lavish and opulent interiors; each breathtaking room rich
with murals, stained glass and gilding. The new Interpretation
Centre opened in June 2008 and it relates the extraordinary
episodes in the Castle’s history using the latest technology.
An exposed original Roman wall, exhibition and film show, plus
an audio guide (available in several languages) revolutionises
visitors’ perception of this site. And the new café and shop will
be the perfect place to relax and soak up the atmosphere.
A tour of the Castle apartments is key to any visit and in the
evening a traditional Welsh banquet offers a true flavour of
Wales.
Castell Coch VAQAS Scheme
While resting on ancient foundations, Castell Coch (Red Castle)
is relatively modern, the by-product of a vivid Victorian
imagination, assisted by untold wealth. The ‘eccentric genius’
Burges was given free rein by his paymaster, John Patrick
Crichton-Stuart, the 3rd marquess of Bute, to create a rural
retreat to complement the opulence of his main residence,
Cardiff Castle. He didn’t hold back. Dazzling ceilings,
over-the-top furnishings and furniture were liberally applied.
Detailed architectural drawings still survive today and following
Burges's death in 1881, colleagues faithfully continued work on
the interiors for another ten years. The castle was not suitable
for, nor was it intended to be, a permanent residence and the
family's visits were infrequent. The castle has ground-breaking
multi sensory resources, allowing easy exploration of the site
using touch screen technology, of particular benefit to visitors
with sensory or physical disabilities.
Accommodation
quality assurance
For 2009, all
accommodation grades
in this publication have
been based on a new set
of common quality
standards agreed by Visit
Wales, Visit Britain, Visit
Scotland and the AA.
The star ratings reflect the
facilities and overall
quality of the experience.
Grades may therefore be
different from previous years
due to the new scheme’s
requirements. However, a
change does not mean that
the quality is any different so
customers should not compare
the previous star grading with
the stars given for 2008.
A Guide to Quality
Assurance
The majority of the
accommodation featured in
this publication has been
quality graded so you can
make your choice in
confidence, knowing that each
place to stay has been given a
star grading according to the
quality and facilities on offer.
Star grades mean that you can
be sure of standards and
choose the accommodation
that’s just right for you.
Visit Wales/AA are the only
checking agents in Wales,
checking out over 5,000
places. In the case of
properties handled by
self-catering agencies, the
frequency between visits can
be longer.
Occasionally, it has not been
possible to visit the
accommodation prior to
publication. In these instances,
the property is marked as
‘Awaiting Grading’.
STARS are your guide to quality.
The Star Quality Grading
Schemes apply to all types of
accommodation: serviced –
hotels, guest houses, bed and
breakfast, farm
accommodation, hostel/hostel
type accommodation,
self-catering cottages and
apartments and caravan
holiday home and
touring/camping parks.
T: +44(0)870 121 1258 E: visitor@cardiff.gov.uk
Here are the quality ratings:
★ Simple, practical,
no frills
★ ★ Well presented and
well run
★ ★ ★ Good level of
quality and comfort
★ ★ ★ ★ Excellent standard
