The neighborhood ma<strong>in</strong>ly consists of social<br />

hous<strong>in</strong>g settlements from the 1970‘s and<br />

1980‘s. Centrally located, the residential area is<br />

well connected to the public transport system<br />

and with its ample public green spaces and<br />

e�ective tra�c calm<strong>in</strong>g the neighborhood<br />

generally an attractive place to live <strong>in</strong>, especially<br />

for young families.<br />

Nevertheless, the neighborhood is separated<br />

from the surround<strong>in</strong>g areas through spatial<br />

barriers and has no perceptible center. The<br />

people liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> this area report negative developments,<br />

such as <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g social segregation,<br />

security and hygiene related issues and<br />

poor communication among neighbors.<br />

A total of 45% of the population depend on<br />

state aid; more than double the average rate<br />

<strong>in</strong> Berl<strong>in</strong>. Young people with various school<br />

and educational problems, particularly related<br />

The <strong>Neighborhood</strong> <strong>Management</strong> area “Brunnenstrasse“ is part of the <strong>in</strong>tra-urban district “Mitte“ and is bordered by the railway l<strong>in</strong>e to<br />

the north, the “Mauerpark“ and the former freight station Eberswalder Strasse to the east, Bernauer Strasse to the south and the Brunnenstrasse<br />

and the adjo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g “Volkspark Humboldtha<strong>in</strong>“ to the west.<br />

to language, are most a�ected by unemployment.<br />

The proportion of pupils with non-German<br />

orig<strong>in</strong> is at 85%.<br />

The majority of long-term residents feels<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly responsible for the “Kiez“. It<br />

has also been recognized that an <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g<br />

number of young families and college<br />

students move <strong>in</strong>to the area.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce the demarcation of the area, a total of<br />

Euro 2,000,000 was approved <strong>in</strong> fund<strong>in</strong>g, out<br />

of which approximately Euro 650,000 was earmarked<br />

for construction projects.<br />
