BASSANO OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

As this is the second time that I have been invited to attend the Bassano Open I thought it 

would be good to look into the History of this beautiful city at the base of the Italian Alps. 

The city of Bassano was founded in the 2nd century BC by a Roman called Bassianus, hence 

the name, as an agricultural estate. 

The first news of the existence of the medieval city dates from 998, while the Castle is 

mentioned first in 1150. In 1175 Bassano was conquered by Vicenza, but the city maintained 

a semi-autonomous status.In 1368 it was acquired by the Viscount of Milan, and in 1404, by 

the Republic of Venice. The city became home to a flourishing industry producing wool, silk, 

iron and copper, but mainly ceramics. 

During the French Revolution the city was the scene of the Battle of Bassano. In 1815 it was 

included into the Kingdom of Lombardy - Venetia, and became part of the unified country 

now known as Italy in 1866. 

The original name of the town was Bassano Veneto. After the terrible battles on Mount 

Grappa in WWI , where thousands of soldiers lost their lives, a decision was made to change 

the name of the town. In 1928, it was changed to Bassano del Grappa, meaning Bassano of 

Mount Grappa, as a memorial to the soldiers killed.During World War 1 Bassano was at the 

front of the action, and all industrial activities were halted. 

In World War ll, after the armastis with Italy, the city was invaded by German troops, who 

killed or deported many of the inhabitants. 

The symbol of the town is the covered wooden pontoon bridge , which was designed by the 

architect Andrea Palladio in 1569. The bridge was destroyed many times, the last time during 

WWII. The Alpine soldiers have always revered the wooden bridge and Bassano del Grappa. 

After the destruction of the bridge, they took up a private collection and had the bridge 

completely rebuilt.

Bassano del Grappa is now mainly known for two things, the liquer that carries the name of Grappa, 

and the annual Dance Festival held in the “PalaBassano”. 

This years Festival was to be something special as the organisors Patrizia & Mauro Lini had been 

granted not only the IPDSC World Open Professional Standard Championship, 

but also the IDSF World Junior II Latin Championship. 

The first day’s events included the World Junior II Latin Championship, the adjudicators for this event 

were: 

Monique De Maesschalck - Belgium, Alan Winter - Denmark, Paulinus Sangavicius – Lithuania, Karin 

Hofstetter - Switzerland, Krzystof Wasilewski - Poland, Larisa Davydova - Russia, Robert Ong - Singapore, 

Barbara Child - Canada, Fabrizio Buonifacio - Italy. 

With 65 couples,the cream of the worlds Junior II Latin dancers from 40 different countries, this was 

never going to be a forgone conclusion. 

In the early rounds the couples that stood out for me included the couples from Russia, Italy, Poland, 

the Canadian number 1 couple, Winson Tam / Anna Nina Kus , who to their credit finished in 5 th place, 

and the English number 1 couple Alex Pritchard / Chloe Hewitt (Not because I am bias – but I really 

felt they could possible have gone at least 1 round further). As it was they finished in 25 th place. 

This surely has to possibly be the hardest age group to judge, as it ranges from 14 – 16 years of age, and 

the problem for the adjudicators is that they are looking at some couples who look as though they are 

closer to Juvenile than Junior, and then the other end of the scale, (The USA couple for example) who 

look more suited to Youth than Junior II. 

Anyhow as they say, justice will prevail, and in this case it certainly did, the result was as follows;

The IPDSC World Professional Standard competition had a starting field of 23 couples. This may be a 

reasonably new organisation, but it certainly does not lack quality from the competitors who are members 

of the organisation, and each and every one of them should be proud of their performances this 

weekend.

Welche Ziele habe ich mir für meine Vorstandsarbeit im STSV gesetzt? 

Die Vorstandsarbeit muss objektiv, neutral und unabhängig sein. Es darf hierbei meiner Meinung nach keine 

Bevorzugungen einzelner Gruppen oder Personen geben. Interessenskonflikte und einseitige Abkommen 

werde ich als Präsident vermeiden, da dies sowohl der Kaderarbeit als auch dem STSV als ganzes schaden. 

Ich trete dafür ein, dass Entscheidungen des STSV soweit wie möglich objektiviert und transparent kommu- 

niziert werden. 

Der Schweizer Turniertanzsport ist auf eine Kooperation mit den Tanzschulen angewiesen. Tanzschulen 

und Tanzvereine haben unterschiedliche Interessen, die nicht in Konkurrenz zueinander stehen müssen. Als 

STSV Präsident werde ich Rahmenbedingungen schaffen, welche eine Win-Win-Situation zwischen 

Tänzerinnen und Tänzern, Tanzclubs und Tanzschulen schafft, um so insbesondere den Nachwuchs zu för- 

dern. 

Die Nachwuchsförderung muss verstärkt werden und es muss für Nachwuchspaare die Möglichkeit bestehen, 

kostengünstiger eine tänzerische Grundausbildung zu erreichen, um so die Basis für weitere Fortschritte 

und Erfolge zu schaffen. Da der Nachwuchs die Zukunft des Schweizer Tanzsports ist, liegt mir dessen Förderung 

ganz besonders am Herzen. 

Wertungsrichter müssen die Möglichkeit haben, anhand objektiver Kriterien und möglichst frei von persönlichen 

Präferenzen die Tanzpaare zu bewerten. Unsere Wertungsrichter beeinflussen die tänzerische Entwicklung 

der Turnierpaare mit. Um den Wertungsrichtern hierfür eine bestmögliche Grundlage zu bieten, 

setze ich mich dafür ein, dass verbesserte Ausbildungs- und Fortbildungsmöglichkeiten für Wertungsrichter 

geschaffen werden.

Sinnvolle Ziele zu Förderung des Schweizer Tanzsports:

kooperativen, vertrauensbildenden und regulierenden Umfelds verpflichtet. 

• Gezielte Förderung der nationalen und internationalen Wettbewerbsfähigkeit aller Schweizer 

TänzerInnen auf allen Stufen.

Tänzerische Laufbahn: 

• Erste Tanzshow mit 8 Jahren 

• Mit 11 Jahren erste Lizenz, mit Malaika Santi, mit welcher ich dann 7 Jahre getanzt habe (1983 bis 1990) 

• Ab 1990 Partnerwechsel zu meiner Schwester Sandra, mit der ich 4 mal 10-Tanz und 2 mal Standard 

Schweizermeister wurde. Auch im Latein hatten wir 2. und 3. Plätze an SM‘s. International waren wir in 

den Lateintänzen sogar erfolgreicher: An einem World Open der IDSF erreichten wir im Latein den 8. 

Platz, an Weltmeisterschaften erreichten wir regelmässig die 24. 

• Unser Top-Resultat war der 5. Platz an der 10-Tanz Weltmeisterschaft 1996 

• Wechsel zu den Professionals Mitte 1997, Ende der Karriere 1998. 

• WR-Lizenzen STSV, IDSF und WDC.

Welche Prioritäten würde ich in meiner Vorstandsarbeit für den STSV setzen? 

• Ohne Tanzschulen und Trainer wird der Schweizer Tanzsport weiter an Bedeutung verlieren. Ich setze 

mich deshalb dafür ein, dass Amateure und Professionals wieder am selben Strick ziehen. Wir alle wollen 

eine grosse Tanzgemeinschaft mit tollen Turnieren. 

• Das Kaderkonzept muss dementsprechend überdacht werden, denn die Schweizer Trainer sollen alle 

mit dem Konzept leben können. Einseitige Abkommen schaden dem Verband vor allem im wichtigen 

Bereich der Nachwuchsförderung. 

• Nachwuchsförderung: in diesem Bereich darf der STSV nicht nur auf J&S setzen. Die Möglichkeiten 

sind von Kanton zu Kanton anders, so soll auch die Jugendförderung flexibel sein. Zur Zeit ist allerdings 

das Konzept von swissdance scheinbar am erfolgreichsten, denn praktisch alle Schüler- und Juniorenpaare 

vom TTZ sind aus dieser Arbeit hervorgegangen. Bestehende Paare sollen bereits ab der Junioren C 

Klasse gefördert werden – selbstverständlich ihrer Altersstufe entsprechend. 

• Längerfristig würde ich anstreben, dass möglichst viele TurniertänzerInnen schon während der aktiven 

Tanz-Zeit eine Ausbildung beginnen. In den letzten 10 Jahren haben nur einige wenige Top-Athleten nach 

Beendigung der Karriere eine Trainer- oder Tanzlehrer-Ausbildung absolviert. Nur mit mehr dem Tanzsport 

wohl gesinnten Tanzlehrern wird auch der Nachwuchs für unseren Sport wieder zunehmen. 

Weshalb stelle ich mich nun doch für den Vorstand zur Verfügung? 

• Für mich ist es wichtig, dass der Vorstand fundiert geführt wird und das Know-How der Professionals 

zu Gunsten der Tanzpaare und Schweizer Tanzszene eingebracht werden kann. 

• Mir ist es ein besonderes Anliegen, dass wir die Tanzpaare aktiv unterstützen und dabei unsere eigenen 

Erfahrungen als aktive Turniertänzer weitergeben können. Des Weiteren möchte ich die Ideen und 

Bedürfnisse der Veranstalter, Wertungsrichter und "normalen" Tanzlehrer berücksichtigen. 

• Aktive Schüler und Jugendförderung durch Schaffung eines optimalen Umfeldes mit positiven Anreizen 

ist für mich eine weitere Herausforderung. 

• Besondere Aufmerksamkeit möchte ich dem Wiederaufbau der Beziehungen zu swissdance , Swiss 

Olympic und weiterer wichtiger Partner schenken um die Turniertanzszene Latein und Standard auszubauen 

und weiterzuentwickeln.

Welche Ziele habe ich mir im Speziellen für den Medien- und Kommunikationsbereich für meine 

Vorstandsarbeit im STSV gesetzt? 

• In einem klaren und sauberen Internetauftritt die notwendige Grundlage legen, um sowohl den 

Clubs als auch den Turniertänzern die Turnieranmeldung und Organisation erleichtert wird, sowie 

eine zentrale Plattform für akuellen Informationen von Seiten Dachverband zu kommunizieren; 

• Finden eines zentralen neuen Hauptsponsors; 

• Mit dem Dancefloor die Tänzer über Vergangenes und Kommendes informieren und ebenfalls eine 

Kommunikationsplattform für den Vorstand an die Clubs und Mitglieder zu halten; 

• Mit der Zusammenfassung von administrativen Tools und dem Internet, die Arbeit für die Clubs 

und die Turnierorganisatoren wesentlich vereinfachen.

Letzte Meldung in Sachen 

Privater Ehrverletzungsklage Varisco gegen Baumann. 

Nach der Verfügung des Bezirksgerichtes Hinwil vom 20 Nov. 2008, verfügte der Untersuchungsrichter, 

dass Herr Varisco an Herrn Baumann eine Prozessentschädigung 

von Fr. 1`750 .—zahlen muss. Hinzu kommt noch eine Gerichtsgebühr von Fr. 

300.--, sowie die Kosten des Friedensrichteramtes Gossau. 

Sicher entstanden auch noch Kosten in Sachen Varisco gegen Siegrist. 

Interessant wäre noch zu erfahren, wer die Kosten von W. Varisco’s Rechtsanwältin 

bezahlte. 

Nach Ablauf der Zahlungsfrist wurde Herrn Varisco ermahnt und die Betreibung angedroht. 

Nach einigen Tagen (6.2.09) wurde die Summe von Fr. 1`750.--auf das Konto 

meiner Rechtanwältin einbezahlt. Somit wäre die Sache eigentlich erledigt, wenn da 

nicht der Zufall mitgespielt hätte: 

Aufgrund einer externen Anfrage wer denn diesen Betrag bezahlt habe, konnte meine 

Rechtsanwältin feststellen, dass der Betrag ab 

PC Konto 80-74252-3 , SCHWEIZER TANZSPORT VERBAND (STSV) BERN, einbezahlt 

wurde! 

Was wohl unsere STSV Mitglieder nun denken mögen? 

Was hat Herr H. Waller als Kassier gedacht, der diese Überweisung veranlasste? 

Es kann doch nicht sein, dass Präsident Varisco seine als Privatperson angezettelten 

Prozesse durch die STSV Kasse begleichen lässt. ..............

French Cup 17. Januar 2009 

This competition was a national event 

giving couples points to go to Worlds or 

Eupean Championships. I thought I would 

ask a stupid question to one of the top 

couples after the competition. 

Do the federation pay the fare to the 

number one couple when travelling and 

representing the county aboard? The answer 

was: of course they do, this is normal, 

they paid for us to go to Australia. Sad that 

Switzerland does not offer this. 

So now back to the competition. This was organized by Christophe and Claudie Lyonnet. 

The event started at 12 am with standard and latin of all grades with more than 350 couples. 

In France there is definitely talent and this starts to break though now internationally. 

The dancing level was quite high. I was also surprised how many senior latin couples took part. 

Great to see them all enjoying the event. Judging finished about 12.30 at night so it was quite a heavy days‘ 

work for the judges. The competition ran well and the timing of the events ran to the time table. 

I enjoyed the trip to France and all judges have been looked after very well.

United Kingdom Amateur 

Standard Championship 

The region of southern England where the lovely city of Bournemouth is now situated has been receiving overseas visitors 

for at least two millennia and, 2,000 years after the victorious Roman legions brought Pax Romana and international contact 

to the area, the locals seem to have got the hospitality right - particularly if the visitors are dancers! Under two hours 

from London by road or rail and with international air and sea ports nearby, access is no problem. Cosy hotels, some with 

ballrooms available for practice, cluster around a center boasting many high-quality clothing stores - No sweat if your tux is 

stranded in Dusseldorf! Good food, inexpensive cabs and the spacious Bournemouth International Centre, to say nothing 

of Mediterranean-style paseos and some of the best-kept beaches in Europe, ensure that this town is a year-round magnet 

to all visitors and an ideal location for a dance festival. On 22nd January, a little seasonal English drizzle put the beach temporarily 

on the back burner, but it did nothing to dampen the ardor of the faultlessly-groomed dancers purposefully trailing 

wheelie-bags down winding sidewalks to the BIC for the United Kingdom Open Championships. These very special visitors, 

cosmopolitan as those who came with Caesar, bring a peace of their own to any place they grace with their presence. I 

have remarked before how impressive I find the impeccable public behaviour of ballroom dancers, wherever they hail from 

and I am immensely proud that so many choose each year to attend this festival and others in the UK. Meanwhile, inside 

the ballroom that even sounds like a pen, those all-powerful implements were out and a hushed audience awaited, almost 

demanded to hear, the names and numbers of those recalled to the final of the 2009 Open Amateur Standard Championship. 

As is traditional at this event, after making a grand entrance from the stage, all finalists danced an honour dance when 

introduced to the floor for the final, alternating in turn between waltz, quickstep and foxtrot. 

Final: 

One sometimes hears complaints that individuality has vanished from today’s top competitors. My overriding feeling 

watching this final was that this claim was patently ill-founded, the couples showing marked differences in style and presentation. 

I felt truly spoilt for choice viewing this super final. 

1:Benedetto Ferruggia - Claudia Koehler (Germany). Dancing the foxtrot as their honor-dance and reversing their British 

Open result vis a vis their runners-up, the eminently watchable Benedetto and Claudia, last year’s runners-up, gave a fine 

performance, exhibiting great showmanship and personality as well as a voluminous hold. Earlier in the competition I 

thought that energy was perhaps a little dominant over style, but this had passed by the final, where they were convincing 

throughout, but especially in the fast dances. Changing from her dark red of the semi-final, Claudia wore a white gown with 

silver and diamante trim, which caught the light superbly well. Confident, though a little less refined in foxtrot tonight than 

the runners-up, I thought, but their Viennese Waltz covered the floor in classic style and its English cousin showed some 

lovely stretchy lines that seemed to go on for ever. 

2:Andrea Ghigiarelli - Sara Andracchio (Italy). There is something truly classy about this couple, who exude charm and sophistication 

and always dance tall. Tonight they treated us to a very expressive waltz, which was also their pre-final honordance. 

Changing from her red of the semi-final, Sara tackled the final round in a dress with a shimmering silver bodice and 

insets of violet-blue and fuschia. She and Andrea swung with great coolness through their Viennese Waltz, performing the 

phrased changes effortlessly. Though they danced also with great expression in the slow waltz, I liked their beautifully 

flighted and choreographed foxtrot best. They presented a strong challenge to the winners and are certainly a couple to 

watch with interest. 3: Emanuel Valeri - Tania Kehlet (Denmark). Setting aside the turquoise and silver creation she wore 

for the semi-final, Tania wore salmon-pink with a paneled bodice and fishtail hem, which enhanced the action of their introductory 

quickstep nicely. This is a compact partnership characterized by high energy and both partners exhibited delightful, 

playful personalities throughout their performance, adding much to their already high popularity. A slight slip in 

the final tango did not deter their enthusiasm for this dance, which showed much character in my view. A marker of confidence, 

in stamina at least, was their early start to most dances. The foxtrot was one such dance where also prodigious footpressure 

helped make this dance a joy to watch. The early long-side run and leap in quickstep has been popular for some 

time now. Perhaps one day it will go the way of pot-stirring and the Horse and Cart in the Cuban dances, but it isn’t trite 

yet and still looked fresh tonight. Certainly it delighted of the crowd, who cheered each time this couple became airborne. 

4: Simone Segatori - Annette Sudol (Germany). Simone presents a cool persona on the dance-floor and Annette is the perfect 

foil for him, she wearing a lovely gown in soft orange with long, feathery floats for this most important of rounds. Most 

becoming she looked too! His ram-rod straight back and sharp shoulder line completed a very disciplined presentation at 

the top. Strong, neat feet kept the other end of the operation in order and were noticeable in their honor-foxtrot. An atmospheric 

tango with some very well-conceived choreography pleased most overall.

5: Marat Gimaev - Alina Basiouk (Russia). Dancing an honor Waltz and Alina wearing a pale lemon dress with long 

floats, they were a most elegant couple, if a little serious-looking at times in presentation. Alina though has an admirable 

poise of the body when changing line. Great control and virtuosity in performance is a lasting memory of their 

dancing on this occasion, they showing some unusual slow aerial work in Waltz and much stretch and good maintenance 

of contact during clever swivel actions in foxtrot. A small slip towards the end of their Quickstep did not detract. 

6: Valerio Colantoni - Sara Di Vaira (Italy). Sara was wearing a long, black dress with small diamante flowers and black 

and blue floaters when she and Valerio appeared and danced an introductory Quickstep, which was lively and vivacious 

in presentation. Their slow waltz had beautiful expression and great control of weight and form, allowing them to remain 

shapely and balanced through testing pivots and spins. Perhaps still lacking something of the volume of movement 

shown by the winners, they have wonderful musicality and style. Serious Viennese Waltzers will know how coy 

and retiring the line of dance becomes when reversing around corners, in contrast to its ebullient greeting to those who 

approach in natural mode. The Viennese of this partnership, however, never lost pace or control and they accomplished 

the testing reverse-turn circumnavigation of the room ends with ease. 

Semi-final: 

A thirteen-couple semi-final testified to the strong competition in the quarter-final round. Those not recalled to the 

final were as follows: 

Chao Yang – Yi ling Tan (China). Finalists at last year’s Open British at Blackpool, Chao and Yi Ling challenged for a 

place in the final today, Yi Ling wearing light blue for the occasion. Great coordination was a feature of their work today, 

Chao also exhibiting a strong back line in tango. They seem to have addressed previous stamina issues and looked 

strong throughout. Donatas Vezelis - Lina Chatkeviciute (Lithuania). Tonight Lina wore a beautiful jade green creation 

with jade and silver bands on the bodice She and Donatas connected well with the audience on this occasion I thought, 

smiling all the way through their swing dances. They danced, too, a lovely sequence of well-controlled turns in the 

opening waltz, which told of strong feet and legs. Their tango looked rather studied and thoughtful, but showed good 

interpretation of this dance. Sergei Konovaltsev - Olga Konovaltseva (Russia). Olga looked very elegant in pale pink on 

entering , she and Sergei going on to achieve some fashionably deep line-work in their presentation. Always a lively pair 

in quickstep, I was not surprised to find that I enjoyed their interpretation of this dance most. Wiktor Kiszka - Malgorzata 

Garlicka (Poland). Malgorzata chose pale green and white with sequined panels for this semi-final. Both partners 

showed bright personalities in the moving dances, though Wiktor adopted a suitably severe persona for the tango. 

A slick quickstep showed quick changes of body shape at speed. They produce some prodigiously extended shapes at 

times, though I sometimes feel the shoulder-line is a little strained. Federico Di Toro - Genny Favero (Italy). Genny 

wore a pale sugar-pink dress for this round. She and Federico danced a waltz characterized by great swing and stretchy 

lines. They are a very striking and free-moving couple and will no doubt benefit from these strengths as their shaping 

and movement develop to match those of the leaders. Marco Cavallaro - Joanne Clifton (England). Without a doubt the 

best performance that I have seen to date from England’s top duo. 

They looked very confident in this company and produced a real challenge for higher honors with great personality and 

showmanship.. If they tently, it surely can only be a matter of time before this delightful pair achieve escape velocity in 

a major semi-final and join the stars in the top six. Joanne looked lovely in a black dress with silver leaves and black 

feathers on skirts and floats. Björn Bitsch - 

Ashli Williamson (Denmark). Ashli wore a 

candy-pink crinoline with a pink diamante 

bodice. A superb set of extended reverse 

waves, danced with great stretch and feeling, 

stand out particularly in my mind as 

did some impressive floor-craft in places.

Franklin Methode 

6. Elastische Kraft mit Bällen und Bändern 

Das elastische Band ist eine ultraleichte Trainingsmaschine, 

richtig angewandt bietet sie eine Vielzahl von Möglichkeiten, 

Kraft und Beweglichkeit aufzubauen. Mit Hilfe von verschiedenen 

Bällen wird die Wirbelsäulenmuskulatur entspannt, 

gekräftigt und neu koordiniert. 

Vorteile des Bandes: 

Jede Übung ist gleichzeitig ein Koordinationstraining (Gleichgewicht, Haltung, Rhythmus, 

Atmung). Die Kreativität ist im Training eingebaut, Hunderte von Uebungsvarianten sind 

möglich. 

Die „Trainingsmaschine“ Theraband steht immer zur Verfügung. Die elastische Abfederung 

der Bewegungen eignet sich für das Training in den koordinativen Sportarten, Gymnastik, 

Tanz und in der Rehabilitation. 

Es wird mit Bällen und Therabändern trainiert, um unsere Kraft, Balance und unsere 

Beweglichkeit zu steigern. 

7. Atmung für entspannte Energie/Motiviert an jedem Tag/Die Kraft der Imagination 

Atmung für entspannte Energie 

Mentales Training und im speziellen die Imagination ist heute aus dem Sport nicht mehr 

wegzudenken. Die Franklin-Methode zeigt auf eindrucksvolle Weise wie man mit Hilfe 

von Imagination die Beweglichkeit, Haltung und Kraft verbessert, Bewegungsabläufe 

schneller erlernt und die Motivation steigert. Imaginationsübungen helfen Gelenksüberlastungen 

zu vermeiden, Bewegungsabläufe schneller zu erlernen und verbessern die Koordination 

und Körperhaltung. 

8. Fitte Füsse 

Unsere Füsse sind der Anfang unserer Aufrichtung. Sie beeinflussen unsere Haltung in 

grossem Ausmass. Es ist eine äusserst spannende Geschichte selbst zu erforschen, wie über 

unsere Füsse die Wirbelsäule und über die Wirbelsäule die Füsse und Beine beeinflusst 

werden.
