Martin V. Melosi has won <strong>the</strong> Excellence in Research and<br />
Scholarship Award <strong>for</strong> full pr<strong>of</strong>essors (2002) at <strong>the</strong> University<br />
<strong>of</strong> Houston, where he is Distinguished University Pr<strong>of</strong>essor.<br />
The award is university-wide and is given annually to one<br />
person at each academic rank.<br />
Daryl M. Hafter (Eastern Michigan University) was awarded<br />
<strong>the</strong> Newcomen Article Award in Business <strong>History</strong> <strong>for</strong> “Women<br />
in <strong>the</strong> Underground Business <strong>of</strong> Eighteenth-Century Lyon”,<br />
Enterprise & <strong>Society</strong> 2, 1 (March 2001), 11-40. This prize<br />

Miriam Levin was invited to be <strong>the</strong> Maria Goeppert Mayer<br />
Visiting Pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Gottingen and will be<br />
presenting an invited lecture and seminar <strong>the</strong>re in June. She<br />
was visiting pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>the</strong> University Blaise Pascal in France<br />
during <strong>the</strong> spring 2002 semester. Her article “Museums and<br />
<strong>the</strong> Democratic Order” appeared in <strong>the</strong> Winter issue <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

XXXVI Settimana di Studi,THE CONSTRUCTION IN-<br />
DUSTRY BEFORE THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLU-<br />
TION, 13TH TO 18TH CENTURIES, Prato, 26-30<br />
Aprile 2004The Istituto Datini <strong>of</strong> Prato will dedicate <strong>the</strong><br />
Settimana di Studi <strong>of</strong> 2004 to <strong>the</strong> construction industry be<strong>for</strong>e<br />
<strong>the</strong> industrial revolution, 13 th to 18 th centuries. Historians who<br />
are working on particular aspects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> industry – <strong>the</strong><br />
construction <strong>of</strong> specific buildings, urban expansion, public<br />
works, <strong>for</strong>tifications, engineering projects, building technology,<br />
design, etc – are invited to present proposals that fit into <strong>the</strong><br />
tentative program presented below. Participants are asked to<br />
consider <strong>the</strong> kinds <strong>of</strong> issues that interest economic historians.<br />
They should indicate how <strong>the</strong>ir proposal fits into this scheme<br />
and demonstrate a willingness to go beyond description to<br />
make comparisons across space and across time with <strong>the</strong><br />
objective <strong>of</strong> throwing light on <strong>the</strong> industry as a whole and on <strong>the</strong><br />
overall economy. All interested scholars should send proposals,<br />
clearly specifying <strong>the</strong>me, period and region <strong>of</strong> interest, to<br />
<strong>the</strong> Istituto Datini by no later than 15 September 2002. The<br />
Executive Committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Istituto will make decisions about<br />
acceptance <strong>of</strong> proposals by 31 October, 2002. Members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
