Bar Masa & Shaboo
In a city with its own Eiffel Tower, Great Pyramid and Venetian canal, pushing
the envelope is a relative term. But the restaurants of CityCenter’s Aria Resort
& Casino — beginning with Bar Masa and Shaboo — manage to do just
that. Sitting behind towering 20-foot double doors of teak and copper, the casual
Bar Masa and more exclusive Shaboo — brought to you by famed New York-via-
Los Angeles chef Masayoshi Takayama — serve up Japanese food with flair.
The interior is clean and urban-ish, with exposed concrete, glass, woods,
metals and curved red leather banquettes creating an effect both intimate
and serene. Bar Masa, set beneath a dramatic 35-foot vaulted ceiling, features
an updated a la carte menu of small plates: sizzling spicy octopus, Peking
duck with foie gras, uni risotto and Ohmi beef tataki with white truffles. A
restaurant within a restaurant, the private (and pricey) 54-seat Shaboo serves
omakase (tasting menu) shabu-shabu at tables equipped with individual
heating elements. Here, guests can cook their own small pieces of beef (flown
in from Japan) and vegetables, and indulge in funky Japanese-y dishes like
white truffle sunomono, followed by a Masa signature luxury — slices of toro
(bluefin tuna belly) paired with Petrossian caviar.
Meals are complemented with wine or any of more than 100 varieties of sake
available by the bottle, from the textured Ginjo from Niigata to the light nigori,
dubbed, appropriately, “crazy milk.” 2
Beso
With the success of her über-hip celebrity stomping
ground Beso Hollywood, actress Eva Longoria
Parker has moved on to Sin City with the opening
of Beso Las Vegas. Like its Hollywood sister, Beso (Spanish
for kiss) is a Latin-flavored steakhouse (a nod to Parker’s
roots), featuring an eclectic and contemporary menu created
by partner and celebrity chef Todd English. Highlights
include Parker’s own recipes for tortilla soup and guacamole,
the daily divine fresh ceviche selection and the revved-up
chili-rubbed skirt steak with a side of mushrooms — each of
which, the menu tells us, are “made with love.”
The signature “kiss” theme permeates the décor, with
deep chocolate browns and rich gold finishes throughout
the spacious interior, plus a splash of red marking the
exhibition kitchen. Remarkable floor-to-ceiling windows
showcase CityCenter’s striking architecture. 2
Silk Road
chef Martin Heierling, the man behind the Bellagio’s celebrated
Sensi, brings his eclectic epicurean style to Silk Road
at the Vdara Hotel + Spa. Inspired by the exotic spices and
ingredients gathered along the ancient trade route spanning from
Venice to the Far East — hence the name “Silk Road” — Heierling
takes traditional Mediterranean fare and mixes it up with distinctively
Asian and Middle Eastern flavors. The food is, you might
say, all over the map: Charred marinated beef carpaccio gets a
new spin with Egyptian dukkah (a roasted seed and nut spice
mix), while the aromatic chicken and coconut soup is perfumed
with cilantro, galangal, tapioca, kaffir lime and Asian mushrooms.
Bookended by walls of glass, the space is filled with streaming sunshine
in the daytime and dazzling city lights after dark. 2
Cabo Wabo Cantina
There’s only one reliable cure for both a bad night at the tables
and a hot day in the desert sun: a margarita — or, better
yet, a Waborita.
Since its grand opening in November, the 15,000-square-foot
Cabo Wabo Cantina has been showing off to the Strip the kind
of fun-loving fiesta flair that’s been making the original location
in Cabo San Lucas famous since 1990. The brainchild of Sammy
Hagar, the bar combines the rocker’s two favorite things: rock 'n'
roll and mouth-watering tequila concoctions.
“I’m ecstatic to introduce Las Vegas to the Cabo Wabo lifestyle,”
Hagar said in a press release.
That lifestyle surely includes plenty of coconut margaritas, made
with Cabo Wabo Blanco tequila, cream of coconut, pineapple juice,
sweet and sour syrup, orange liqueur and shaved, toasted coconut.
And here’s something to look forward to: As soon the spring gives
way to the relentless heat of summer, the good folks at Cabo Wabo will
be providing spirit-infused Popsicles for the perspiring masses. 2
LAS VEGAS TRAVEL GUIDE MARCH 2010
If you have lost sight of why Elvis Presley
is the still the king of rock 'n' roll,
or are too young to have ever known in
the first place, watch the opening sequence
in Cirque du Soleil’s “Viva Elvis.”
The curtain drops and a circa-1950s
Elvis — projected larger than life on the
rounded dome of a gigantic Wurlitzer
jukebox — breaks into “Well, it’s one for
the money …” from “Blue Suede Shoes.”
Shrieking girls in ponytails and pastel
swing skirts swarm the stage and a live
band picks up the music. After all these
years, Elvis — his voice and face oozing
sensuality and cocky swagger — is as hypnotic
as ever.
“Viva Elvis,” which premiered Feb. 19 at
a custom-built theater at CityCenter’s Aria
Resort & Casino on the Strip, is Cirque’s
long-awaited homage to the entertainer
whose raw emotion, exuberance and sexually
charged persona still thoroughly inhabit
— even define — Las Vegas in a way
that no one else has or likely ever will.
Following the runaway success of his
1968 comeback special on NBC, Elvis
more or less settled down in Las Vegas for
a long-term engagement at the International
Hotel (later the Las Vegas Hilton).
During the next several years, Elvis played
837 shows in front of 2.5 million people.
Every single performance sold out. He left
in 1976, never to return, but Las Vegas was
forever changed.
Though there are biographical notes to
“Viva Elvis,” the show isn’t a retelling of Elvis’
life; his story is well known to most and
if not, there are books and movies. In fact,
there’s virtually no flesh-and-blood personification
of Elvis at all. (The creators
originally had in mind two Elvis actors —
MARCH 2010
one young and one old — but discarded
the idea out of fear that any attempt at
imitation was doomed to fall short.)
Instead, “Viva Elvis” celebrates the king
through a never-before-tried mélange of
elements — Elvis’ own vocals isolated from
master recordings, Cirque dancing and
acrobatics, and the voices of female soloists
and back-up singers. The only male
singing voice in the show is that of Elvis.
“It’s not so much about bringing Elvis
back to life — he never really went away,”
said Armand Thomas, “Viva Elvis”
creation director, “but about giving him
his due and the fact that his music is as
relevant today as it was then.”
“We are hoping when people leave the
showroom at the end of the night,” added
Stéphane Mongeau, the executive producer,
“that they have felt Elvis, and seen him,
and met him.”
There are 30-odd Elvis songs in “Viva
Elvis” but the show draws from as many
as 60 tracks, sometimes with snippets
of just a few seconds. While Elvis’ voice
stays true to the original, the arrangements
are new, a reinterpretation of the
king for the new millennium.
“We retain the essence of the original
while creating something new that will
make the hairs on the back of your neck
(stand up),” Thomas said. “We’re creating
an entirely new product, a new art form.”
Cirque shows — there are six others
currently playing in Las Vegas — favor the
abstract over the literal and this one is no
exception. Some of the quasi-biographical
scenes play off mostly forgotten parts of
Elvis’ life, so even fans who think they
know all there is to know about Elvis will
likely leave the theater enlightened.
Early on in the show, two male acrobats
clad in white T-shirts and blue jeans swing
from a huge guitar suspended from the
ceiling. One of the acrobats falls and the
other climbs to the top. This symbolizes a
little-known fact about Elvis’ life: He had a
twin brother, Jesse, who died at birth.
The audience can expect the unexpected
in the rearrangements. A singer with
los angeles times advertising supplement
Aretha-worthy chops belts out a gospel version
of “All Shook Up.” (Gospel was a key
ingredient in Elvis’ well-known synthesis
of musical styles.) Another female vocalist
renders a Norah Jones-ish “One Night”
as the male acrobats swing on the guitar.
There are also duets and harmonies.
Throughout are still photographs and
video clips from Elvis’ storied career. Some
are playful — Elvis locking lips with an
endless succession of screen sirens — others
bittersweet — Elvis and Priscilla horsing
around in happy times.
‘It’s not so much about
bringing Elvis back to
life — he never really
went away.’ – Armand Thomas
“Viva Elvis” departs in many ways from
traditional Cirque shows, especially for its
use of a narrator, Col. Tom Parker (played
here by an actor), Elvis’ famously Machiavellian
manager. “I had to turn the hoses
on them just to cool them off,” Parker tells
the audience of the Elvis’ female fans.
Toward the end of the show, Col. Parker
— a man not given to sentimental longing
— looks straight at the audience and
makes a heartfelt declaration: “I really
miss that boy.”
Las Vegas does, too, but with “Viva Elvis,”
perhaps a little less these days. 2
A Month of Madness
THE nCAA COLLEgE BASkETBALL CHAMPIOnSHIPS rIVAL THE SuPEr BOWL
fOr SHEEr ExCITEMEnT — In SPOrTS BOOkS AnD BEyOnD
If someone told you a few years ago that a sports phenomenon was poised to out
outshine the Super Bowl in Vegas, you’d have labled him a madman. But today,
that’s exactly what’s happening.
“March Madness is getting to be so popular it will soon exceed the Super Bowl,”
said Bill Sattler, director of specialty games for Harrah’s Las Vegas who also oversees
sports books at the Flamingo and Imperial Palace.
The wildly popular NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament tips off on March 18,
packing four dozen games into a frantic first four days — with a world of available
wagering options for the descending hordes of partyers.
“It’s a crazy, colorful scene everywhere you go in Las Vegas — a huge event that
takes over the entire city,” Sattler said.
The ‘SuPer Bowl’ of College hooPS
The Super Bowl has been an enormous
Vegas draw for decades, but it’s just one
game. The wild opening two rounds of
March Madness consist of 48 overlapping
basketball games played over an
exhausting (and exhilarating) fourday
weekend — 64 teams going at it in
eight cities across the country. That
means you need banks of side-by-side
flat-screen TVs to deliver all the action.
Vegas is happy to oblige.
“We have to add more seats and set
up extra flat-screens and satellite sports
book terminals in showrooms and clubs
so everybody can bet and watch the
games,” Sattler said.
It’s proof that March Madness has
exploded in popularity in Vegas over the
past decade. It now attracts nearly as
much money as the Super Bowl, which
brings in around $100 million to Nevada
sports books each year, Sattler said.
With so many big flat-screens blanketing
the walls, there’s always a good view
of the action at major sports books —
and each has its own style and ambience.
Harrah’s 2-year-old Sports Pit
includes table gaming and video poker
amid a spacious lounge atmosphere,
while the casually elegant Race & Sports
Book at Caesars Palace has a dozen
50-inch plasma screens and 12-inch flatscreens
at each of its guest tables.
The sporTs piT AT hArrAh’s LAs vegAs
A popular March Madness venue, MGM
Grand’s Race & Sports Book — located
near the Studio 54 club — is plastered
with three dozen 60-inch plasma screens
and two dozen 42-inch screens. Four
luxury TV-equipped skyboxes each accommodate
eight to 10 guests.
how To BeT
You don’t have to be a hoops expert or
high roller to lay down some cash and get
in on the excitement. With straight wagers
— the most common betting option
— the idea is to simply pick the winner of
the game with the point-spread factored
into the final score.
Here’s how it works: If, say, Duke is favored
over an opponent by three points,
that means they need to win the game
by four for a winning wager. If they win
by three, it’s a tie or a “push,” and the
original bet is refunded to the bettor.
Conversely, the opposing team gets
three points added to its final total for
betting purposes. So anyone who bets on
that team wins if the team wins outright
or loses by one or two points.
Bets also can be made on the total
number of points scored in a game by
both teams. A line is set — 109 for example
— and players can bet on whether the
final tally will go over or under the line.
Multigame parlays offer more risk
but bigger payouts — if, that is, you can
string together a series of winners. A
three-team parlay pays 6-1; four teams
10- or 11-to-1; all the way up to 10 teams
at around 700-1 and beyond. Parlays
entice players with the promise of big
payouts for small wagers. The catch is
that every team on the parlay has to win
against the point-spread.
March Madness tip-off is a four-day
bash unlike any other — and it’s not too
late to book rooms at many properties.
“The students that form such a large
portion of our visitors tend to book
their rooms at the last minute, so rooms
are usually available in early March,”
Sattler said. 2
Adventures in Red Rock
scrambling over giant boulders and through narrow ravines, it
took the better part of an hour to reach the “secret” location — a
sequence of vernal pools deep in the Red Rock Canyon wilderness
on the western outskirts of Las Vegas.
The perfect remedy for a tough hike — and another sizzling day in
southern Nevada — I plunged into the chilly water, slip-sliding down
miniature cataracts connecting the pools and dreamily expounding on
how the contrast between the orange stone and the deep-blue desert
sky was the coolest thing I’d ever seen. Ninety minutes later I was
back on the Strip, popping my loose change into random slots and
trying to decide between “Zumanity” and “Blue Man.”
That’s the beauty of the Red Rock area — its astounding nearness
to the city that never sleeps. It’s a pristine desert expanse where Vegas
residents and visitors alike come to hike, bike, climb or merely contemplate
how Mother Nature could create something so stunning. The
fetching calico landscape has also caught the eye of Hollywood, serving
as a scenic background (and body drop) for numerous “CSI” episodes.
Every bit as brilliant as the neon along Glitter Gulch, Red Rock’s
vibrant stone derives from 600 million years of geological action during
which the region evolved from prehistoric seabed and primordial
swamp to dune-covered desert. Sediments laid down during each of
these periods were compacted and eventually uplifted by plate tectonics,
the exposure leading to oxidation and the rich russet colors.
Most of this natural palette is protected within the confines of Red
Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, governed by the federal
Bureau of Land Management and visited by more than a million
people each year. Unlike other BLM parcels — where grazing, mining
and logging often take place — the 200,000-acre conservation area
operates more like a traditional national park.
“Our focus is on conservation rather than other land uses,” said
Kirsten Cannon, public affairs officer for the Red Rock National Conservation
Area. “In this case, [conservation of] fairly unique geological
features, the plants and animals of the Mojave Desert, in addition to
the incredible recreation opportunities at Red Rock.”
Local outfitters and guides organize a number of adventures and
activities inside the park. Bonnie Springs Ranch offers equestrian
trips like a 90-minute breakfast ride that finishes with hot cakes, fried
potatoes, bacon and eggs. McGhie’s Bike Outpost in Blue Diamond
arranges guided mountain and road bike tours. Adventure Photo
Tours in Las Vegas shows shutterbugs how to catch the best light
during half-day tours of Red Rock and Spring Mountain Ranch.
Red Rock’s only overnight accommodation is a single campground,
two miles from the visitor center. Don’t expect fancy digs: toilets and
drinking water are the lone amenities. Or you can toss the sleeping
bag and check into the posh Red Rock Resort, Casino & Spa, just
above four miles from the park entrance. 2
THErE’S nO BETTEr PLACE TO BE On ST. PATrICk’S DAy THAn VEgAS.
WE rOunD uP A fEW Of Our fAVOrITE SPOTS.
It might be a long way from the Emerald Isle to the Nevada
desert, but Las Vegas never misses an excuse for
a celebration, and it’s certainly a pulsating place to be
on St. Patrick’s Day. Here are some of Sin City’s prime St.
Paddy’s party spots.
The biggesT pinT You’LL ever see is AT hennesseY’s.
J.C. WOOLOuGHAn’S IRISH PuB
221 n. rampart blvd., at Jw Marriott Las vegas resort & spa; 702.869.7725
Built in Ireland (by a company that actually specializes in
building Irish pubs), dismantled and reassembled stateside,
J.C. Wooloughan’s is festooned with genuine Dublin
paraphernalia. This welcoming watering hole, where
around 20% of the staff are reckoned to be Irish, boasts
a grand four-day St. Patrick’s Day celebration March 14
through 17. There will be a Sunday brunch performance
from the Martin Percival School of Irish Dance, live music
from the Wild Celts and John Windsor, plus a generous
helping of giveaways and happy hour specials.
FADO IRISH PuB
9470 s. eastern Ave. in henderson, 702.407.8691
Think of Fado as a Celtic-themed “Cheers.” After a couple
of visits, the unusually friendly staff really will know your
name. Six miles from the St. Paddy’s pandemonium on
the Strip in Henderson, it’s an Irish oasis festooned with
authentic artifacts and just oozing “craic” (a Gaelic word
that roughly translates as “good times”). Aficionados say
they pull the best pint of Guinness in town. Expect boisterous
singalongs to multiple live bands here on March 17.
Live MusiC AT J.C. wooLoughAn’s
HenneSSeY’S TAVeRn
425 fremont st., suite 110; 702.382.4421
Located in the heart of downtown Vegas, Hennessey’s is
delightfully dark yet delivers a warm welcome from smiling
servers in tartan skirts. For St. Paddy’s, Hennessey’s has
booked one of Las Vegas’ best Irish bands, Finnegan’s Wake
(starting at 9 p.m.) and will be serving fine Emerald Isle fare
— hot corned beef sandwiches, shepherd’s pie, Irish stew —
all day. Crowds here are heavy all day on St. Patrick’s, but
escalate to a frenzy by the time the band goes on.
SOnS OF eRIn ST. PATRICK’S PARADe & FeSTIVAL
March 11 to 14, in henderson; www.stpatricks2010.com
For a family-oriented St. Patrick’s Day, downtown Henderson’s
Sons of Erin Parade (March 13) is the place to be. Part
of a four-day St. Paddy’s festival March 11 to 14, the 44th
edition of this elaborate annual parade includes a carnival
and Kiddie Land, plus free concerts and entertainment.
There’s the Irish Water Street Mall (a Celtic marketplace), a
food court and — don’t worry, dads — even an Irish pub.
McMuLLAn’S IRISH PuB
4650 w. Tropicana Ave., 702.247.7000
Family-run and catering mostly to locals, McMullan’s avoids
the trying-too-hard air of some of its competitors. It’s worth
the short cab ride from the Strip to experience the homeaway-from-home
vibe and comprehensive brew selection
of a true pub. Packed with knickknacks and Emerald Isle
memorabilia, the welcome is warm and the Guinness cold.
McMullan’s St. Paddy’s party usually includes live music
— bagpipers and fiddlers — and a special menu. But come
early — a line forms by late afternoon.
LAS VEGAS TRAVEL GUIDE MARCH 2010
MARCH 2010
JACK’S IRISH PuB
2411 w. sahara Ave., at palace station; 702.367.2411
Deserving of “well-kept secret” status, Jack’s is a cozy hideaway
that, with the exception of waitresses far too scantily
clad for oft-chilly Ireland, does a decent job of re-creating
the vibe of a Dublin pub. It helps that there are no video
poker machines here (no need, as Jack’s is located inside
Palace Station’s casino). Expect great food like corned
beef sandwiches and Guinness stew; Irish and British ales,
ciders and whiskeys; and a robust singalong (the servers
often join in!) on St. Paddy’s.
McFADDen’S ReSTAuRAnT
AnD SALOOn
3700 w. flamingo road, at the rio; 877.645.3849
McFadden’s spacious 7,000-square-foot setting; comprehensive
bar with 24 beers on tap; across-the-pond dishes
like shepherd’s pie, lamb stew and Irish onion soup; and
extended hours that keep the doors open as late as 4 a.m.
make for a one-stop St. Paddy’s experience. For those
familiar with the original McFadden’s in New York or the
Chicago location, rest assured that the Vegas version —
with dueling pianos, a resident deejay and a packed house
— is continuing to spread the shamrocked fun.
MOLLY MALOne’S IRISH PuB
11930 southern highlands parkway, 702.837.0213
Driving into Vegas from L.A. on I-15, you may spy Molly
Malone’s green sign peeping over the noise wall. Distant from
the Strip and unrelated to the Los Angeles bar of the same
name, it has the atmosphere of a neighborhood pub, so expect
mostly locals on St. Paddy’s. With wood paneling, stained
glass and “old country” artifacts, it’s a regulars’ retreat from
Sin City’s relentless tempo. Molly Malone’s food is reasonably
priced and generously portioned — standouts include fish and
chips and an enough-for-two potato soup bread bowl.
O’SHeAS CASInO
3555 Las vegas blvd south, 702.697.2711
On St. Patrick’s Day 2009, Las Vegas Mayor Oscar
Goodman declared that O’Sheas, the Strip’s only
Irish-themed casino, was “the luckiest place in Vegas.”
A magnet for younger partiers and the birthplace of beer
pong locally, O’Sheas has earned a reputation as the “frat
house” of the Strip, so there’s sure to be a high-energy atmosphere
on St. Paddy’s. Expect an open-air block party,
live music, a roaming leprechaun and imaginative drink
specials (last year, red-haired lasses drank for free!).
nIne FIne IRISHMen
3790 Las vegas blvd. south, at new York-new York; 702.740.6463
Perhaps the best known of Sin City’s green-themed
bar eateries, Nine Fine Irishmen is upbeat with the
air of an Eire manor house and the sounds of frenetic
Irish bands. Its evocative Dublin-designed interior includes
charming “snugs” — semi-private areas perfect
for private moments. There’s satisfying fare, like traditional
Irish bangers and beer-battered cod and chips,
plus multiple fine stouts and ales. Nine Fine Irishmen
celebrates St. Patrick’s with a comprehensive threeday
Celtic feis (festival).
los angeles times advertising supplement
QuInn’S IRISH PuB
2300 paseo verde drive, at green valley ranch in henderson; 702.617.7777
Along with Fado Irish Pub and the Sons of Erin Parade,
Quinn’s is another good reason to spend your St. Paddy’s
in Henderson. With an expansive selection of Irish and
European beers and a menu that encompasses both traditional
and progressive Emerald Isle cuisine, Quinn’s is
a dark-yet-energized escape from the world outside. The
bartenders are quick — not just with the drinks, but with
a smile and a chat too. Live music, reasonable prices, good
humor and beer pong complete Quinn’s considerable appeal.
Slainte!
SeAn PATRICK’S
8255 w. flamingo road, 702.227.9793
Sean Patrick’s tends to attract a young crowd on St.
Paddy’s, no doubt attracted in part by the decent prices.
This place has an authentic feel and a memorable, classy
and cozy atmosphere that doesn’t sacrifice fun. With several
different rooms to choose from, plus the bar area and
patio, there’s something for everyone at Sean Patrick’s.
The menu includes classic across-the-pond comfort food
like Irish stew and corned beef and cabbage, and service is
pleasantly prompt.
irish MAdness AT Three AngrY wives
THRee AnGRY WIVeS PuB
8820 w. Charleston blvd., 702.944.4411
The “countdown to St. Patrick’s Day” on
Three Angry Wives’ website shows how
seriously this pub takes the big occasion.
Dark-wooded with comfy couches,
low tables and no-hassle servers, it’s
normally a relaxing place to come with
mates or a date. But last St. Paddy’s an
estimated 4,000 revelers descended upon
Three Angry Wives and guzzled their way
through more than 100 kegs of beer. This
year the wives are promising an outdoor
beer garden, traditional Irish food, live music
all day, and cash and prize giveaways. 2
Priceless Memories
Las Vegas may be known for its lavish
spas, exclusive nightclubs and
high-limit tables, but believe it or
not, there are plenty of things you can do
in town for free. Here’s a look at how you
can spend your next vacation without
spending a dime.
Traveling with tots in tow? For a city
that’s supposedly not meant for kids,
there are actually quite a few free kidfriendly
attractions in town. Among the
more popular attractions are the free
circus acts at Circus Circus (beginning
at 11 a.m. daily). Strutting their stuff
every half hour in the Carnival Midway,
death-defying performers delight visitors
both young and old with their truly
breathtaking skills, ranging from trapeze
artistry to juggling.
Want to take a walk on the wild side?
Even though the Mirage’s free tiger exhibit
has been replaced by a burger joint,
guests can still get up close to the king
of the jungle at MGM Grand. The hotel’s
popular Lion Habitat (open daily 11 a.m.
to 7 p.m.) gives guests the unique opportunity
to be stalked by lions within a
see-through (and safe!) tunnel that runs
through the habitat and allows the ferocious
felines to prowl above and below.
For a journey under the sea, head on
over to the Silverton’s 117,000-gallon reef
aquarium — home to more than 4,000
tropical fish and three species each of
stingrays and sharks — for its interactive
feeding shows. The show occurs daily at
1:30, 4:30 and 7:30 p.m., and guests can
ask questions of the aquarium’s marine
biologist, who is equipped with a full-face
communication mask during the dive.
Guests can satisfy a sweet tooth at
Francois Payard Patisserie inside Caesars
Palace, which features a 13-foot-tall
truffle-inspired timepiece dubbed the
Payard Chocolate Clock in its retail
store (open Tuesday through Friday 6:30
a.m. to 11 p.m. and Saturday through
Monday 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.) that displays
nine different time zones and randomly
dispenses free truffles to guests.
And don’t forget a visit to Las Vegas’
sweetest attraction: Jean Philippe Pâtisserie’s
glass-enclosed floor-to-ceiling chocolate
fountain at the Bellagio. Viewable
24/7, the fountain stands more than 26 feet
tall and is the tallest chocolate fountain in
the world, circulating nearly two tons of
melted dark, milk and white chocolate at a
rate of 120 quarts per minute.
As if Jean Philippe Pâtisserie’s choco-
lovers are sure to rejoice over the city’s
newest free attraction: the CityCenter
Fine Art Collection. The first major permanent
collection of art in Las Vegas to
be integrated into a public space, visitors
will happen upon works by such acclaimed
artists, sculptors and visionaries
as Maya Lin, Jenny Holzer and Richard
Long as they walk the grounds.
History buffs, meanwhile, are sure to
enjoy the urinals (you heard us) inside
the men’s restroom at Main Street
Station hotel and casino, as they are
mounted on an authentic piece of the
Berlin Wall. Although the attraction is
generally only seen by male guests, when
the bathroom is empty, women can be
escorted in by hotel security.
If it’s too busy, though, gals can check
out another interesting free attraction
Downtown: the Hand of Faith. Weighing
in at 61 pounds, 11 ounces, the Hand of
Faith is the largest known gold nugget
on display in the world and can be found
— where else? — inside the Golden Nugget’s
Gold Tower.
So even if you lost all your gold on
black, there’s no reason why you should
ever go bored in Las Vegas! 2
Think you’ve seen Phantom? Bet you’ve never seen it like this.
“Phantom – the Las Vegas Spectacular” features only-in-Vegas special
effects, a breathtaking chandelier experience and a Tony Award winner
as the tormented musical genius who prowls the Paris Opera House.
With its four-part, wedding cake-style construction and nearly 30,000 individual
crystals, the 1-ton chandelier that swoops dramatically over the audience
is unlike any of its Broadway or London counterparts. The 1,800-seat theater
was custom built to look like a 19th-century Paris opera house, complete with
80 life-sized mannequins filling the opera boxes. And, of course, lots of moodsetting
pyrotechnics, fog and smoke.
In the role of the Phantom is Anthony Crivello, a Tony winner for a role he
originated on Broadway, the Marxist revolutionary Valentin in “Kiss of the
Spider Woman.” Crivello got his big break in 1979 as Che in the Broadway production
of “Evita.” He played opposite Audra McDonald in “Marie Christine”
at Lincoln Center and did a comic turn in Steve Martin’s “The Underpants.”
Phantom, which continues to play to packed houses on the Strip, is
directed by the legendary Hal Prince. It is estimated that more than 100
million people worldwide have seen the musical. 2
Turn Back Time
The Ageless Cher reTurns To The ColosseuM AT CAesArs PAlACe
No woman eligible for a senior bus pass has the right to a rear end that
looks as good as Cher’s. But if that’s what skipping across stage in
stiletto boots does for a girl’s backside, then Cher has earned it.
The pop diva brings her vaunted posterior, along with her other
considerable attributes, back to the Colosseum at Caesars Palace this
spring for the latest in a series of four-night-a-week performances.
Cher will perform 26 shows from April through May in the 4,300-seat
venue originally built for Celine Dion’s “A New Day” and later occupied
by Elton John and Bette Midler.
Expect warrior-goddess headdresses, leather and feathers, aerial
dancers, barely-there costumes from “sultan of sequins” Bob Mackie
and just about every permutation of hair color imaginable.
The set list bounces back and forth through the many phases of
Cher’s four-decade-plus career, with early chart-toppers (“Half-Breed,”
“Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves”) later-career hits (“Strong Enough” and
“If I Could Turn Back Time”), covers (“Fire Down Below,” “Old Time
Rock and Roll” and “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”) and
video-assisted duets with the late Sonny Bono. 2
April 10, 11, 13, 14, 17, 18, 20, 21, 24, 25, 27 and 28
May 8, 9, 11, 12, 15, 16, 18, 19, 22, 23, 25, 26, 29 and 30. shows at 7:30 p.m.
Sein Language
It’s official: Comedian Jerry Seinfeld is bringing his stand-up
act to Caesars Palace for a two-night engagement.
The comedy star has kept busy since “Seinfeld” ended in
1998 after nine seasons on NBC. He wrote the best-seller “Seinlanguage”;
co-wrote, produced and starred in the animated
“Bee Movie”; and did an HBO special, “I’m Telling You for the
Last Time.”
He reunited with castmates Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jason
Alexander and Michael Richards on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,”
longtime collaborator Larry David’s hit HBO show.
Earlier this year, Seinfeld announced he would return
to primetime NBC as executive producer of “The Marriage
Ref.” In the unscripted show, celebrities, comedians
and sports stars decide who’s right and who’s wrong
in real-life disputes between real-life spouses, according to
NBC. “The Marriage Ref” is set to debut this year.
As a stand-up comedian, Seinfeld performs tirelessly, a pace
he explains is necessary to keep his act from getting rusty. He
has worked the Colosseum at Caesars many times. 2
After melting hearts for all these years, can Barry
Manilow get any more romantic?
Looks like he can. The legendary singer-songwriter
promises the most “beautiful and romantic show I’ve ever
done” at Paris Las Vegas, where he has relocated after five
successful years at the Las Vegas Hilton.
“Paris Las Vegas is a very romantic and exciting place
to work,” Manilow told the Las Vegas Travel Guide. “I’ve
fallen in love with Las Vegas [and] I’ve always wanted to
play on the Strip. The showroom at Paris Las Vegas is
perfect for me.”
Manilow’s two-year residency at Paris Las Vegas’s
1,500-seat Paris Théâtre will be his first sit-down show on
the Strip. He’s slated to perform 78 shows each year.
Fanilows can expect a few covers, but the platinumselling
artist will draw mostly from his substantial song
catalogue, which includes chart toppers such as “Mandy,”
“Can’t Smile Without You,” “Copacabana (At the Copa),”
“I Write the Songs” and “Ready to Take a Chance Again.”
“I’ve got 30 years of original albums to choose from,”
Manilow said. “During the past few years, I’ve been paying
tribute to music from [the] decades and my new CD
is called ‘The Greatest Love Songs of All Time,’ so I’ll be
doing a handful of those types of songs. But most of the
show will be songs from my original albums.”
Handling directing duties for Manilow’s latest labor
of love will be film and stage choreographer/director
Jeffrey Hornaday, whose credits include “High School
Musical,” “Flashdance” and “A Chorus Line.” Manilow
called Hornaday “one of the most creative people I’ve
ever worked with.”
Manilow is one of pop music’s most enduringly popular
hitmakers and concert performers. He has sold more than
80 million records worldwide. Between 1975 and 1983, he
had 25 consecutive top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100.
Manilow’s “platinum experience” tickets are highly
coveted. Each ticket includes a front-row seat, pre-show
champagne reception and a photo meet and greet. Net
proceeds from platinum experience tickets benefit the
Manilow Fund for Health and Hope, which puts musical
instruments in the hands of middle school and high school
students in Las Vegas public schools. 2
A Roar That Endures
The next time you hear a friend (or perhaps a character
on your favorite sitcom) burst into the familiar refrain
of “In the jungle, the mighty jungle,” consider this:
Stage shows come and go. But only a rare few are so influential
that they are part of our culture. And of all the shows to
charm their way into our collective consciousness, Disney’s
“The Lion King” leads the pack.
And though the story alone has been enough to win countless
hearts since the animated film debuted in 1994, the people
behind the Vegas production were determined to take “The
Lion King” stage show to unprecedented heights, creating an
experience that holds something new even for longtime fans.
In Vegas-speak, you’d call it “spectacle.”
“This is the biggest production of the show that’s ever
been mounted,” said Alton White, who stars as Mufasa and
also performed in the touring production and on Broadway.
“This is the largest orchestra that ever played the show — so
you’re getting a fuller sound.”
Add that to some revolutionary puppetry and exotic
masks and costumes and you get a “Lion King” unlike any
that audiences have yet seen. 2
On a Blue Streak
Who knew that three guys coated in blue paint who
create music (and art) using marshmallows and
PVC pipe could be so much fun? Blue Man Group’s
critically acclaimed show has been called “visually stunning,”
“wildly inventive” and “hysterically funny.” And though it’s
difficult to describe to the uninitiated, fans agree that it’s an
intense, exciting and outrageous experience.
The show takes place in its own custom-built theater
inside the Venetian and is an impossibly enthralling fusion
of multimedia theatrics, dense percussive riffs and physical
humor. But some of the group’s zanier antics have to be seen
to be believed. Is it about universal human truths? Science?
Our loss of innocence? Making art by spitting paint-filled
gumballs? Who knows? The audience doesn’t seem to care. 2
Walk Like a Man
One of the biggest laughs in Jersey Boys comes
when bassist Nick Massi, played by Santa Monica
native Jeff Leibow, explains why he quit the
Four Seasons just as the group’s popularity soared.
“Everybody wants to be up front. But if there’s four
guys, and you’re Ringo.…”
Massi was indeed overshadowed by Bob Gaudio’s
songwriting genius, frontman Frankie Valli’s
stratospheric falsetto and guitarist Tommy DeVito’s
oversized personality. But Leibow believes that Massi,
who died in 2000, doesn’t get nearly the credit he deserves.
“Nick was an incredible arranger. The three big
hits (“Sherri,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “Walk Like a
Man”) — those are all songs that he arranged.”
The Palazzo’s West Coast-exclusive engagement of
“Jersey Boys” takes you up the charts and behind the
music of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. Discover
the secret of a 40-year friendship: four blue-collar
kids working their way from the streets of Newark to
the heights of stardom. They wrote their own songs,
Celebrating five years this
April as the flagship show at
Wynn Las Vegas, “Le Rêve”
eschews the traditional stage
floor in favor of a dramatically
lighted 1.1 million-gallon
Dancers swoop, splash,
— often from dizzying
heights and while simultaneously
performing dazzling
acrobatics, aerials and
Chmerkovskiy’s artistry is
on brilliant display in three
ballroom sequences — a
super-sultry tango, upside-
clingy, wet costumes.
charged theatrics is a love
story that is told entirely
“We strengthened the story
When Slots Get Hot
0nly in Vegas can a solitary activity epitomized by the sound of clinking coins
become a brutal head-to-head battle for six-figure stakes.
From April 16 to 18, the Golden Nugget Las Vegas will host its Second Annual
World Series of Slots Tournament, pitting players against each other in two days of
elimination rounds to take home a share of more than $250,000 in prize money.
The $599 entry fee includes a $100 food and beverage credit, a welcome reception and
two continental breakfasts. Further sweetening the pot: Everyone will win at least $200.
The grand prize is $100,000, plus any round-advance winnings, plus a championship
bracelet. That’s some serious coin.
AAA Four Diamond-rated Golden Nugget Las Vegas is the most luxurious resort on
the Fremont Street Experience and features a year-round outdoor swimming pool with a
200,000-gallon live shark aquarium, fine dining, live entertainment and a full-service spa.
To register, call 800.777.5687 or e-mail mycasinores@goldennugget.com. 2
Can We Talk?
JoAn rIVers Is BACk AT The VeneTIAn
darling, I am a performer — and
performers perform!” announces “My
Joan Rivers in her signature
Brooklyn rasp. “I pray that I will die on a stage
— but after 31 minutes, because if you do an
hour show they will not pay you contractually
unless you’ve done over half.”
This neatly encapsulates the tireless work
ethic and irreverent outlook that have been
the cornerstones of the comedienne’s multifaceted
half-century career.
After a six-year Sin City absence, Rivers
returned to the relatively intimate Venetian
Showroom for a handful of shows in August
and September.
“The shows went great, with no advertising
— I wasn’t even on the marquee,” said Rivers.
“We did very, very well, so I’m going back. I just
signed for eight weekends, starting April 8 to 10
and April 15 to 17.… I’m going to do two weekends
each quarter. And I want to stay in that
little theater — it’s adorable. It holds I think 500
people, which I love for comedy — you’re right
there on top of them. There are no tables; it’s a
proper theater — I just love that room!”
Angelenos angling for a fresh take on Vegas appreciate away-from-the-Strip
spots like Condé Nast “Hot List” property Red Rock Resort and the fourdiamond
Green Valley Ranch resort. Now, owner Station Casinos is adding to
the allure of these and six other Vegas locales with the “My Vacation” promotion.
At Red Rock Resort or Green Valley Ranch, it means a two-night stay plus $200 in
food, beverage and spa credits for $250. At Aliante Station, Boulder Station, Palace
Station, Santa Fe Station, Sunset Station or Texas Station, $125 will get you a twonight
stay with $100 in credits good at the properties, restaurants and bars. All eight
hotel-casinos offer table games, slots and video poker, race and sports books, bingo,
poker and keno. The “My Vacation” promo runs through April 30. For details and
reservations, visit www.stationcasinos.com/myvacation or call 800.678.2846. 2
Over the 40 years Rivers has been
performing in Las Vegas, the city has
changed dramatically. “It’s totally different.
First of all, I don’t know who to
go to ask to get somebody killed — the
mafia’s gone and it’s really upsetting
me,” joked Rivers. “It’s gotten very upgraded.
It’s all about big shows now,
which is why I think my little show
was such a surprise to everybody.
Jokes aside, underpinning the comedienne’s
success is an innate, lifelong
passion for live performance.
“I love it! It’s what I am,” Rivers said.
“I hate to sound pompous, but Laurence
Olivier, the great English actor, said to me:
‘That’s my home; the stage is my home. And
Sinatra once said to me: ‘It’s where I’m happiest.’
And, you know, I get it. I walk on a
stage and that’s where I belong.”
Joan Rivers appears April 8 to 10 and 15
to 17 at the Venetian Las Vegas, 3355 Las
Vegas Blvd. South (www.venetian.com,
