<strong>Armando</strong> <strong>Salvatore</strong> (<strong>Italy</strong>/<strong>Germany</strong>)<br />

<strong>Armando</strong> <strong>Salvatore</strong> <strong>earned</strong> <strong>his</strong> Ph.D. in Political and Social Sciences from the European<br />

University Institute, Florence (1994) and received <strong>his</strong> Habilitation in Sociology from the<br />

Humboldt University in Berlin (2005). He is Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for<br />

Advanced Studies in the Humanities, Essen, and Reader at the Institute of Social Science,<br />

Humboldt University, Berlin. He is also, on a part-time basis, Senior Research Fellow at<br />

The Mediterranean, Europe, and Islam: Actors in Dialogue in Naples.<br />

Dr. <strong>Salvatore</strong> has held teaching and research positions and has been awarded research<br />

fellowships in the USA (Indiana University, Bloomington), <strong>Italy</strong> (European University<br />

Institute, Florence), Egypt (Centre d Etudes et de Documentation Economiques, Juridiques<br />

et Sociales, Cairo), Ireland (University of Cork), the Netherlands (Institute for the Study of<br />

Islam in the Modern World, Leiden), and the UK (Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies). He<br />

founded and directs, since 2000, the Forum of Social Research and is editor of the<br />

Yearbook of the Sociology of Islam.<br />

His research focuses on the political significance of modern concepts of religion and<br />

secularity as developed within the Euro-Mediterranean civilizational area. Among <strong>his</strong> most<br />

recent publications are The Public Sphere: Between Tradition and Modernity (Palgrave<br />

Macmillan, 2006); Religion, Social Practice, and Contested Hegemonies (ed., with Mark<br />

LeVine, Palgrave Macmillan, 2005) and Public Islam and the Common Good, (ed., with<br />

Dale F. Eickelman, Brill, 2004).
