White Convicts n Desperate Plot.<br />

road Woods was met by five prisoners<br />

who warned him that the "haole"<br />

(white) prisoners were waiting to<br />

"do him up" and they also stated that<br />

a Porto Rican prisoner had been shot<br />

by Lyons.<br />

Woods made his way to the camp<br />

and entered it by a dark side. He<br />

encountered Parker and asked him<br />

where the haole.3 were. Parker said<br />

that tad Just passed over<br />

towards the toilet room. Woods then<br />

told Parker to wait for the prisoner<br />

and instructed him to challenge the<br />

man when he returned. This Parker<br />

did and was reu arded by a punch on<br />

the jaw from Furguson.<br />

Woods got cloe enough to the man'<br />

who was carrying a rifle and, suddenly<br />

Jumping in to close quarters,<br />

thrust his revolver into Lyons' stomach<br />

and made him surrender. The<br />

rifle was . useless as : the desperado<br />

bad not found the cartridges to fit the<br />

gun. ...<br />

Then came the job of getting Monroe<br />

out of the room and Woods accomplished<br />

this by taking Lyons up<br />

to the door of the room and telling<br />

him to call the other man out at<br />

ouce under pain of getting drilled<br />

himself. Monroe then came out and<br />

was at ence pounced upon and handcuffed.<br />

Furguson was captured next day by<br />

a gang of prisoners who were sent out<br />

to fihd .hlra. "Ht was laced up like a<br />

stuffed turkey when brought back to<br />

camp. The nan had made his way<br />

for some miles down the road towards<br />

Kona and was discovered by the rest<br />

of the prisoners on Sunday morning.<br />

Dailey, the prisoner who telephone<br />

Ircm the camp to. Woods on<br />

Saturday evening and who was forced,<br />

at the point of a revolver to say everything<br />

was all right, escaped from the<br />

cam)) and made his way towards Dep<br />

he got away, from the camp he was<br />

assaulted and, had three teeth driven<br />

down his. throat' by the . haole convicts,<br />

who hated him for being loyal<br />

urday evening and that he made his<br />

; way as . rapidly as possible to warn<br />

Woods that the haole convicts had<br />

conspired to murder him.<br />

Money ad Gun Stolen,<br />

j Woods, after the excitement had<br />

died down a little, found that his<br />

'room had been entered and everything<br />

thrown about the place. About<br />

. $15 of Woods' money was stolen, but<br />

a much larger amount that belonged<br />

to certain prisoners was not discovered<br />

by the, lntri'.ders. Woods' revolv-- .<br />

er and rifle wjre taken and it was<br />

with the first named weapon that the<br />

.Porto Rican wsb shot by Lyons.<br />

Woods sent a wireless message to<br />

Honolulu and told the acting high<br />

sheriff of the trouble at Waimea.<br />

Then, as there v. as no place at the<br />

camp or at Waimea where desperadoes<br />

of the white convicts' tyj could<br />

be confined, Wroods decided to bring<br />

the men to Ililo. He started out in<br />

an automobile and reached Hilo on<br />

Sunday afternoon. The convicts were<br />

placed in the Hilo jail for the time<br />

being.<br />

Furguson. Lycns and Monroe are<br />

implicated in a conspiracy which is<br />

said to include a general jail delivery.<br />

For some time past it is said that<br />

the white prisoners who could not secure<br />

easy jobs as trusties at the camp<br />

have been stirring up the Filipino and<br />

Porto Hican prisoners to rebel against<br />

Woods. The colored prisoners, however,<br />

appear to have refused to take<br />

a hand In the proposed plot.<br />

The v hole affair has stirred up excitement<br />

in and near Waimea and the<br />

consensus of oninion seems to be that<br />

desperate murderers and such like<br />

prisoners should not be sent to work<br />

outside prison, especially whenhere<br />

is no way to confine them properly or<br />

to punish them for fresh offenses. The<br />

Waimea jail is jl disgrace, says Sheriff<br />

Pua, and bad prisoners cannot be<br />

kept there at all in safety.<br />

Further advices concerning the outbreak<br />

arrived today on the Inter-Islan- d<br />

steamer Mauna Kea.<br />

More Guards Wanted.<br />

According to P. T. Phillips, purser<br />

of the Mauna Kea, the people of the<br />

Big Island are greatly incensed over<br />

the outbreak and feel that there are<br />

not sufficient guards maintained to<br />

keep the prisoners in submission.<br />

Phillips said that from what he learned<br />

at Hilo a sort of honor system is<br />

in force there. The prisoners, a large<br />

proportion of whom are murderers<br />

and desperHte men, are given considerable<br />

liberty, baseball games are<br />

staged and the men live in wood<br />

shacks with very few guards, few of<br />

whom are armed.<br />

"'The prisoners who work on the<br />

roads." said Phillips, ' are supposed to<br />

be men who have only committed<br />

minor effonsps, but from this outbreak<br />

it seems this is not so.'<br />

Woods Becomes Suspicious.<br />
