White Convicts n Desperate Plot.
! Whe6 about four ralle along the
road Woods was met by five prisoners
who warned him that the "haole"
(white) prisoners were waiting to
"do him up" and they also stated that
a Porto Rican prisoner had been shot
by Lyons.
Woods made his way to the camp
and entered it by a dark side. He
encountered Parker and asked him
where the haole.3 were. Parker said
that tad Just passed over
towards the toilet room. Woods then
told Parker to wait for the prisoner
and instructed him to challenge the
man when he returned. This Parker
did and was reu arded by a punch on
the jaw from Furguson.
J ..Woods then charged out on Furgu- -
I . son, wno ran ror tne dining tent,
li whore, he hoped to dodge until be
j could reach nis room. Woods, however
blocked him and having called
j upon him to top und being defied
j took a hot at the prisoner but missed
f him. Furguson then disappeared In
the darkness and made his way towards
Kona.
Woods then went towards Lyons'
room and thero saw the gunman look
Jug out of the. door. John Monrce, another
cenvict was in the room also.
Woods got cloe enough to the man'
who was carrying a rifle and, suddenly
Jumping in to close quarters,
thrust his revolver into Lyons' stomach
and made him surrender. The
rifle was . useless as : the desperado
bad not found the cartridges to fit the
gun. ...
Then came the job of getting Monroe
out of the room and Woods accomplished
this by taking Lyons up
to the door of the room and telling
him to call the other man out at
ouce under pain of getting drilled
himself. Monroe then came out and
was at ence pounced upon and handcuffed.
;r
Furguson was captured next day by
a gang of prisoners who were sent out
to fihd .hlra. "Ht was laced up like a
stuffed turkey when brought back to
camp. The nan had made his way
for some miles down the road towards
Kona and was discovered by the rest
of the prisoners on Sunday morning.
Dailey, the prisoner who telephone
Ircm the camp to. Woods on
Saturday evening and who was forced,
at the point of a revolver to say everything
was all right, escaped from the
cam)) and made his way towards Dep
uty.Sherift. Lindsay's place. ' Before
he got away, from the camp he was
assaulted and, had three teeth driven
down his. throat' by the . haole convicts,
who hated him for being loyal
to Woods: s s K ; .
, Dalle told Lindsay thathe had
missed the road in the dark on Sat
urday evening and that he made his
; way as . rapidly as possible to warn
Woods that the haole convicts had
conspired to murder him.
Money ad Gun Stolen,
j Woods, after the excitement had
I
died down a little, found that his
'room had been entered and everything
thrown about the place. About
. $15 of Woods' money was stolen, but
a much larger amount that belonged
to certain prisoners was not discovered
by the, lntri'.ders. Woods' revolv-- .
er and rifle wjre taken and it was
with the first named weapon that the
.Porto Rican wsb shot by Lyons.
Woods sent a wireless message to
Honolulu and told the acting high
sheriff of the trouble at Waimea.
Then, as there v. as no place at the
camp or at Waimea where desperadoes
of the white convicts' tyj could
be confined, Wroods decided to bring
the men to Ililo. He started out in
an automobile and reached Hilo on
Sunday afternoon. The convicts were
placed in the Hilo jail for the time
being.
Furguson. Lycns and Monroe are
implicated in a conspiracy which is
said to include a general jail delivery.
For some time past it is said that
the white prisoners who could not secure
easy jobs as trusties at the camp
have been stirring up the Filipino and
Porto Hican prisoners to rebel against
Woods. The colored prisoners, however,
appear to have refused to take
a hand In the proposed plot.
The v hole affair has stirred up excitement
in and near Waimea and the
consensus of oninion seems to be that
desperate murderers and such like
prisoners should not be sent to work
outside prison, especially whenhere
is no way to confine them properly or
to punish them for fresh offenses. The
Waimea jail is jl disgrace, says Sheriff
Pua, and bad prisoners cannot be
kept there at all in safety.
Further advices concerning the outbreak
arrived today on the Inter-Islan- d
steamer Mauna Kea.
More Guards Wanted.
According to P. T. Phillips, purser
of the Mauna Kea, the people of the
Big Island are greatly incensed over
the outbreak and feel that there are
not sufficient guards maintained to
keep the prisoners in submission.
Phillips said that from what he learned
at Hilo a sort of honor system is
in force there. The prisoners, a large
proportion of whom are murderers
and desperHte men, are given considerable
liberty, baseball games are
staged and the men live in wood
shacks with very few guards, few of
whom are armed.
"'The prisoners who work on the
roads." said Phillips, ' are supposed to
be men who have only committed
minor effonsps, but from this outbreak
it seems this is not so.'
Woods Becomes Suspicious.
Further details were given by Phillips
