It uses the same engraving type that flat engravers use, with a wide variety of type styles to choose from. Since the letters are held in a type holder, it becomes very easy to see exactly where the engraving will go and whether or not the message to be engraved will fit inside the ring before you start engraving. Perhaps most importantly, you can adjust the size of the engraving to go inside the ring from 1mm tall to up to 3mm tall, a feature that the fixed dial type engravers can only wish for.
