Effects of Monsoon Rains<br />
Captain KLIEN<br />
1. Rains will flood entire rice fields. Streams that were<br />
2 feet deep may be 6-7 feet deep 2 hours later.<br />
2. Use of vehicles is difficult. A large depression in a<br />
road will flood, blocking a returning vehicleb passage.<br />
3. In areas ground will not absorb rains. Fox-holes <strong>and</strong><br />
dug-in positions fill <strong>and</strong> remained full for weeks.<br />
4. Drownings are a threat to personnel working in paddies.<br />
5. imnersion foot is common, it cuts combat effectiveness<br />
tremendously.<br />
6. Enemy Tactics - Co Bi Than Tan<br />
Enemy mortared battalion CP for 3 consecutive nights between<br />
hours of 2300 <strong>and</strong> 0600.<br />
1 Battalion (-) attacked a company strong point the second<br />
night in position.<br />
Both mortar <strong>and</strong> ground attacks took place in heavy rain.<br />
After initial large contact enemy employed squads in most<br />
exercises.<br />
Enemy planted a large number of booby traps after we operated<br />
in the area. (traps planted the night after a sweep)<br />
7. Ontos were used on sweeps <strong>and</strong> to blaze trailso<br />
