That’s what the YMCA
does, in good times and bad.
People turn to the Y in search
of a safe place where their
loved ones can thrive, embraced
by our values. As our region
welcomes people from all
cultures and faiths, the YMCA
can be the place to raise
families with the universal
values of caring, honesty,
respect, and responsibility.
In 2008, we continued to
raise people up, even as we
raise the walls of our new
YMCA Youth and Family
Center in North Hartford,
which opens this Fall. We have
also raised the money to
make another goal a reality,
as we begin construction on
our new Eastern Regional
YMCA. From longstanding
dreams rise new ones: A new
Putnam YMCA is taking shape,
thanks to the generosity of
the Hale Foundation.

Y as socially
awkward; he
had trouble
making friends
and fitting in
with the other
kids. The other
was a 15-yearold,
whose
father had cancelled
his YMCA
membership
multiple times
because of
behavior issues
and problems at
home. I have
watched them
both grow and
mature over the
last year. When
I walked into the
gym, Jimmy,
the older, cooler,
athletic young
man was showing
the younger,
less athletic Rick
how to do a
layup and how
to move on the
court. You could
see how the
YMCA has been
very good to
both of these
young men.”

We reaffirm that child and family
development is our core focus. We
will engage in relationships and
develop programs that strengthen
the family unit.
In 2008, the YMCA of Greater
Hartford served over 109,000 people.
In 2009, we will continue to serve
more and more people. But we
won’t use numbers alone to
gauge success. We will refocus
our efforts on relationships, impact,
engagement and involvement.
This is a natural
strategy for the
YMCA. Every day,
at every branch,
we see the power
of engagement and involvement.
Moving forward, we will carefully
examine every program, making
sure we’re using our resources to
their fullest potential.We will measure
success by the positive outcomes
we achieve.

We will make a unique and
sustained impact on the quality life for
the people in the Greater Hartford area.
We’ve begun that commitment with
investments in our future. The numbers
are impressive—but far more impressive
will be the impact those dollars
make on people’s lives. Think about the
positive changes we’ll be able to make
in our communities with this generous
support: $3 million for the Downtown
Hartford YMCA, $10 million for the
Wheeler Regional Family YMCA in
Plainville; $13 million for the Farmington
Valley YMCA in Granby, $10.5 million
for the new YMCA Youth and Family
Center in North Hartford; and $13
million to begin our new Eastern
Regional YMCA in Ellington.
Your YMCA has been recognized as
good stewards of these investments.
We have earned an “A” rating from
the American Institute of Philanthropy
for program service excellence and
low administrative costs. We continue
to rank consistently among the top
ten organizations in The Chronicle of
Philanthropy’s ‘Philanthrophy 400’
report since 1997.All this progress is
made possible by people who have
been touched by the work we do
and the mission we follow.

We will consistently and tirelessly
promote our core values. We will share
our programs and our spirit with all,
regardless of their ability to pay.
Our five-year path never wavers from
our belief in membership for all. Now
we will reposition the organization
to meet the needs of a truly diverse
membership that mirrors the Greater
Hartford region and the communities
we serve.
All are welcome at the Y, and always
have been. Now we will put new
energy in this invitation:“We offer
membership and fellowship to all.
We know who needs us most and

the changing mixture of cultures
and the newly disenfranchised. We

woman from

Indian Valley
YMCA. When
asked if she
needed help,
she replied, no,
she was waiting
for her children.
She had come
a long way by
bus, passing
any number of
youth centers
along the way.
But she traveled
all that distance
because the
people in her
community had
told her, the
YMCA was the
best place to
bring her family.”

We will work in a coordinated
and collaborative manner to
build stronger communities with
organizations that foster diversity,
understanding and well being.
That’s why we must see the YMCA
as a brand. The community must
identify with us through single-minded
messages that tell people who we

him to have a

‘normal kids.’
Jay was scared...
When you are
10 years old
and you are on
your third heart
transplant,
‘normal’ is far
from what you
feel. Jay was
homesick from
the get-go. By
the first week,
Jay was at the
end of his rope.
He talked to
Mom on the
phone—and a
breakdown
would understate
his reaction
when Mom said
‘Stick it out some
more.’ There
are and what we do. We will support healthy lifestyles,
were four
campers in the
same boat.
They were all
homesick, they
had all talked to
Mom, and the
Moms had said,
‘Tough it out.’
“ I had a line of
homesick kids in
front of me.
First was Mara.
When I told her
I supported her
Mom’s decision,
she took off,
running and
screaming. The
reaction startled
Jay and his eyes
got wide. I fully
expected him to
join Mara in her
despair, but he
surprised me.
He saw Mara,
kicking and
pounding her
fists in the sand.
Then he turned
back to me and
said, ‘I got this.’
Jay spent 15
minutes with
Mara, trying to
talk her down.
Jay finally got
up and came
over to me.
Mara got up
and followed.
Jay was doing
exactly what the
counselors do
with a homesick
camper. I have
spent 15 years
dealing with
homesick kids
and that is the
last reaction I
expected out of
Jay. Jay and
Mara talked
many times over
the rest of the
session. They
both made it to
the end. Jay’s
Mom was so
appreciative of
what we were
able to give her
son. He had a
Camp Experience
like normal kids,
and in the
process made
all of us a
little more
appreciative
of life.”

We will provide better opportunities
for individuals to improve health and
wellness in spirit, mind and body. We
will build on a proven track record of
success. YMCA programs have a
history of great results, including
Activate America, fighting the rampant
problem of obesity. Health and
wellness is crucial to our organization,
and no group is better prepared to

Distinguished Leadership Award
The Robert C. Knox, Jr. YMCA
Distinguished Leadership Award honors
the memory of the late Hartford
insurance executive, whose dedication
helped the YMCA grow, prosper
and fulfill its mission to serve others.
For Bill Petit, his wife Barbara, their five
children and eight grandchildren, the YMCA
has been a family affair. He began a lifelong
commitment to service in 1961, bringing
his young sons to YMCA Indian Guides in
Plainville. “Getting involved in a group with
my children was certainly one of my biggest
mission moments.”Bill then joined Wheeler’s
first exercise program:“We were called the
Sweathogs. They even have the pink shirt
on display now in the lobby.” Thus began a
distinguished YMCA career. Bill has served
two terms on the Wheeler Board of Directors
(1983-1985; 1999-present), including two
terms as Chair (1984-1985; 2007). He has
played a pivotal role in Wheeler’s growth,
on the Building Expansion Committee (1980);
as Chair for two of the Strong Kids Annual
Campaigns; as Finance Chair; as Property
Chair; and most recently as Chair of the
Board Development Committee.
But Bill takes his greatest pride in his work
as Chair of the Wheeler Regional Capital
Campaigns (1988, 2000), creating the showcase
branch and growing its membership
far beyond expectations. It is his perhaps his
foremost mission moment:“Wheeler used
to be perceived as an adult Y. Now it’s really
a family Y. I come in and see the Child Care
Center, with the little ones running around;
families having something at Subway;
people working out in the Wellness Center;
Friday night Teen Night…it’s wonderful.”
Bill brought deep entrepreneurial experience
to his YMCA mission. He began working at
his family’s supermarkets; founded the Dairy
Farms chain; and started a video business,
among many successful enterprises. He also
served in the U.S. Marines. His amazing
volunteer spirit even goes beyond the
YMCA, to Rotary International for 42 years
(past President and Paul Harris Fellow) and
to the Plainville community (past Chairman
of the Plainville Town Council and Board of
Education, and present Chair of the Plainville
Community School Steering Committee).
Bill is a Charter Member of the Plainville
Historical Society; Member of Our Lady of
Mercy Church, serving on the Finance
Committee; Member of the Knights of
Columbus; past President and 49-year Member
of the Plainville Chamber of Commerce;
Chairperson of the Plainville Downtown
Beautification Committee and Charter
Member of the Plainville Community Fund.
Today Bill is still a Wheeler regular, coming
to exercise with his daughter and son. He’s
on a Lose to Win fitness team—and has lost
30 pounds in ten weeks.“To me, it’s all fun.
It’s the people you work with and serve with
that keep you coming back.”

Challenge Grant to
complete the capital campaign

The YMCA met the challenge
in December 2008
by raising the $1,715,512,
six months prior to the
Kresge deadline.

more than 70 kids in a
new summer literacy
program called STARS.
The YMCA was able to
create a quality child
development component
to ensure that children
who enrolled in the half
day program had appropriate
activities and care
in the afternoon.
Camp Jewell
The UCONN woman’s
basketball team participated
in a three day
teambuilding program.
The results – they won
the national title.

Unfortunately,
these families
sometimes fall
through the
cracks or are
simply passed on
to another
agency.
Fortunately this
is not what
happened to
one family who
is part of the
Indian Valley
Community.
In December,
one of our
after-school
site directors
became aware
that one of our
single-parent
families had
been evicted
from their
home. This
family had no
local support
base and
nowhere to
turn. Rumor
had it that they
were living out
of their car.
With Christmas
just around the
corner, these
children were
certainly facing
a holiday season
they would never
forget.“Our site
director began
reaching out
to anyone who
could help.
Within a week,
she had arranged
for transitional
housing; acquired
donations of
clothing, bedding
and kitchenware;
coordinated
with another
local agency
to work with
the YMCA to
support this
family; and
engaged the
local Rotary
Club to donate
cash so the
children could
have Christmas
presents.“The
struggles of
this family are
not over, but
there is now a
community
inspired by the
work of the
YMCA staff
member to
support them.
With the use
of the Strong
Kids Campaign
funds, we have
arranged for
the children to
remain in our
after-school
program. The
mother has
recently found
employment.
Yes, we
often make a
significant
impact on the
lives of children
and families
through our
Strong Kids
campaign funds,
but they are
useless unless
they are
melded with
the kindness,
compassion and
love that are
exhibited by our
staff each and
every day.”

The YMCA 1852 Society
derives its name from the year
of the birth of the YMCA serv-
ices in Hartford. The YMCA of
Greater Hartford is the fourth
oldest YMCA in the United

In 2006, Camp Woodstock began
a capital initiative that will pro-
vide a special experience for teen
resident campers. New Yurt City
at Camp Woodstock will be an
unique place devoted to teens
where they will come together to
share the spirit of friendship,
diversity and community. The
New Yurt City Steering
Committee, under the leadership
of Duncan Forsyth, has raised
over $102,000 in pledges to date
with a goal of $250,000 for this

annual YMCA Achievers Program
Recognition Banquet which sup-
ports the program.
YMCA Achievers provides
young people the opportunity
to interact on a regular basis with
positive role models, “the Adult
Achievers.” The program is now
serving children in the fifth to
twelfth grades in Hartford,
Bloomfield, East Hartford, West
Hartford, Wethersfield, Windsor,
New Britain and Manchester.

Capital Area were able to
enjoy “an experience that lasts a
lifetime” at a YMCA summer
camp. Children went to the
Y’s two resident camps, Jewell
and Woodstock, as well as
summer programs offered by each
of its eight branches.
