2009 <strong>USTA</strong> <strong>texas</strong><br />

awards presented<br />

On Saturday, February 13, the United States Tennis Association<br />

Texas presented its annual awards at the 2009 Texas<br />

Tennis Hall of Fame Recognition and <strong>USTA</strong>-USPTA Awards<br />

Banquet at The Hilton DFW Lakes Executive Conference Center <strong>in</strong><br />

Grapev<strong>in</strong>e, Texas.<br />

Carlos Turic of Dallas (<strong>USTA</strong> Texas Randy Snow Wheelchair Service<br />

Award), Evelyn “Jane” Hammond of Waco (Umpire of the Year),<br />

Roland Elizondo of Corpus Christi (Lloyd Sessions Educational Merit<br />

Award), Bev Taylor of Houston (<strong>USTA</strong> Texas Community Service<br />

Award), Kathy Langer of Dallas (Julius Z<strong>in</strong>n Seniors’ Service Award),<br />

Ben Eshleman of Corpus Christi (W.T. Caswell Service Award) and<br />

the Tommie and Sarah Pernell Family of Aust<strong>in</strong> (<strong>USTA</strong> Texas Family<br />

of the Year) were all recognized for their contributions to tennis.<br />

The <strong>USTA</strong> Texas Randy Snow Wheelchair Service Award was created<br />

<strong>in</strong> 2009 to honor the life of the Texas tennis icon for which it<br />

was named. The award honors the person who most exhibits the<br />

enthusiasm for cultivat<strong>in</strong>g the growth of wheelchair tennis that<br />

Randy Snow embodied.<br />

The <strong>USTA</strong> Texas Umpire of the Year Award, established <strong>in</strong> 1981,<br />

recognizes an <strong>USTA</strong> certified official for his/her outstand<strong>in</strong>g service<br />

and time spent work<strong>in</strong>g to strengthen officiat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Texas<br />

Section.<br />

Inaugurated <strong>in</strong> 1989, the <strong>USTA</strong> Texas Community Service Award<br />

honors an <strong>in</strong>dividual who provides outstand<strong>in</strong>g contributions <strong>in</strong><br />

promot<strong>in</strong>g and conduct<strong>in</strong>g recreational tennis programs for adults<br />

and/or juniors.<br />

The Lloyd Sessions Educational Merit Award, established <strong>in</strong><br />

38A TennisLife magaz<strong>in</strong>e JUNE 2010<br />

1979, recognizes an <strong>in</strong>dividual that is actively <strong>in</strong>volved with junior<br />

players. This <strong>in</strong>dividual must exhibit outstand<strong>in</strong>g activities at a<br />

professional level <strong>in</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g stronger junior tennis players at all<br />

levels of play.<br />

First awarded <strong>in</strong> 1962, the W. T. Caswell Service Award is given<br />

to the Texas resident who has made valuable contributions to<br />

the growth and development of tennis <strong>in</strong> Texas, work<strong>in</strong>g as a<br />

volunteer with<strong>in</strong> the framework of the <strong>USTA</strong> (United States Tennis<br />

Association) Texas.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce 1975 the <strong>USTA</strong> Texas has honored a family for their contributions<br />

to Texas tennis as the <strong>USTA</strong> Texas Family of the Year.<br />

The Julius Z<strong>in</strong>n Seniors’ Service Award was first awarded <strong>in</strong> 1997<br />

and honors a senior member of the <strong>USTA</strong> Texas who has made a<br />

contribution through his/her efforts, will<strong>in</strong>gness, cooperation, and<br />

participation. This <strong>in</strong>dividual is most deserv<strong>in</strong>g of the respect and<br />

honor of the seniors, either <strong>in</strong> play and/or organizational work for<br />

the betterment and furtherance of senior activities.<br />

Earlier <strong>in</strong> the day, the <strong>USTA</strong> Texas honored several long-time<br />

volunteers for their <strong>year</strong>s of service with the <strong>USTA</strong> Service P<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Those honored were Yvonne Garton (35 <strong>year</strong>s), Bob McK<strong>in</strong>ley (35<br />

<strong>year</strong>s), Joyce Zimmerman (35 <strong>year</strong>s), Murray Coulter (30 <strong>year</strong>s),<br />

Nan Burnam (25 <strong>year</strong>s), Joyce Dresl<strong>in</strong> (25 <strong>year</strong>s), Jack Sheehy (25<br />

<strong>year</strong>s), Gordon Brynildsen (15 <strong>year</strong>s), Randy Matt<strong>in</strong>gly (15 <strong>year</strong>s),<br />

Rick Meyers (15 <strong>year</strong>s), Marcia Rodriguez (15 <strong>year</strong>s), Lars Rosene (15<br />

<strong>year</strong>s), Steve Smith (15 <strong>year</strong>s), Ben Eshleman (10 <strong>year</strong>s), Cather<strong>in</strong>e<br />

Kruppa (10 <strong>year</strong>s), Randy Ortwe<strong>in</strong> (10 <strong>year</strong>s), Emily Schaefer (10<br />

<strong>year</strong>s) and Bryan Whitt (10 <strong>year</strong>s).
