What Is Color?
Color is one of the most fulfilling elements in our lives. From a child’s glee at bright primaries
to an adult’s appreciation of calmer tones, color plays both to our hearts and minds. It also
sparks the imagination. Just think—you hold the possibilities for a wondrous spectrum every
time you pick up a paintbrush. With just a few strokes, you can change your world.
From the moment you step into the
to a thrilling transformation. We make
decorating easier with over 1,000 colors
Simply Color
Sherwin-Williams has reinvented color for
your home. Our hues are captured on
oversize swatch cards for a better view.
Each card features an ergonomically
designed wave edge to fit comfortably in
your hand. The swatches on our cards
offer light, medium, and deep variations
of every hue. Swatch cards are grouped
in four rows on the COLOR display: They
begin with Fundamentally Neutrals at the
top and increase in brightness in the
TM
subsequent rows. This makes color
selection a breeze. If you prefer subtlety,
the Fundamentally Neutrals are for you.
The Rich Color Options row offers a
range of gorgeous, inviting hues, while
our Vibrant Color Options row resonates
with clear, clean colors. And the row of
Energetic Brights provides the lively
colors that will add vitality to your
decorating scheme.
Appealing interior palettes
For your inspiration and convenience,
we’ve combined a number of our colors
into 20 exciting palettes reflecting a
variety of styles and moods. You can find
these palettes on the rotating rack next to
the COLOR display. Each palette,
arranged on a convenient take-home
card, offers six interior colors to provide
a complete decorating scheme.
(Beginning on the opposite page with
Indoor Oasis, this guide shows seven of
the 20 palettes.) The seven palettes we’ve
illustrated show how color can be
playful, dramatic, sophisticated, or laidback.
Interchange our palette-card colors
for your ceiling, walls, accents, or trim,
and also use them as a guide when
selecting wall coverings, fabrics, and
flooring. You’ll achieve professional
results, making ordinary rooms
spectacular. The colors on our palette
cards have been selected by Sherwin-
Williams experts and come from all four
rows in our COLOR display. Among the
Indoor Oasis colors, for instance, are
Nacre from Fundamentally Neutrals,
Hazel from Rich Color Options, and
Glad Yellow from Vibrant Color Options.
(The Indoor Oasis room also shows Extra
White for trim.)
magical moments
There’s just something about this style. A spark. A twist. It’s magic. To
bring the beauty of the Magical Moments palette card #17 to a home
office decorated with contemporary furnishings, we selected:
walls: Bewitching Blue SW 6960
ceiling: Snowberry SW 7140 from the Interior Highlights ® color card
bookcase wall and gable: Impetuous SW 6916
Colors for the room’s
accessories were inspired by:
Naval SW 6244
Kimono Violet SW 6839
Arcade White SW 7100 from the Interior Highlights ® color card
Colors evoke many sensations, including
a perception of being warm or cool.
Warm colors encourage conversation
and play: They’re the colors of a sunset,
a ripe orange, budding daffodils, or a
copper pot. Cool colors invite relaxation
and thought. Cool hues are inspired by
water, sky, violets, and silvery tones.
Sherwin-Williams experts suggest using
both warm and cool colors in rooms
where you desire balance and variety.
Such combinations result in rooms that
will feel fresh, original, and appropriate
for a number of activities.
The space shown here is an attic in a
120-year-old house, fitted out to serve
as a young graphic designer’s home
office. Bright accent walls in Impetuous,
a citrus-spiked warm color, promote
creativity and intrigue clients who drop
by for visits. The more overall use of
Bewitching Blue, a cool color, creates a
tranquiI, soothing atmosphere for work.
It’s a cool, classic style, but with a punch that tells people
you’re anything but traditional. In a big-city bedroom and
sunroom decorated for a 12-year-old girl, the Modern Edge
palette card #1 makes an ideal background for a free-spirited
mix of retro and contemporary furnishings. To paint this space,
Sherwin-Williams experts chose:
bedroom walls: Butter Up SW 6681
bedroom trim: Alabaster SW 7008
sunroom walls: Wheat Grass SW 6408
sunroom trim: Butter Up SW 6681
Many furnishings and fabrics pictured here were based
on these colors from the Modern Edge palette:
Energetic Orange SW 6880
Quiver Tan SW 6151
To give a big room a more intimate feel, paint it in
colors that make the walls seem to advance toward
you. These colors include red, gold, orange, and
brown. To help a small room seem larger, paint it in
colors that make the walls appear to recede, such as
blue, green, or violet.
These dependable formulas were used effectively in
the pair of rooms shown here. To create a cozy,
cocoonlike bedroom, the walls were painted with
the cheery, glowing Butter Up. Because the adjacent
sunroom is tiny, its walls were done in Wheat
Grass, a green tone that visually expands the space.
Another advantage these Modern Edge colors
provide is longevity. They’re playful enough for a
12-year-old occupant’s youthful imagination, but
they’re also sophisticated enough to grow up with
her, and adapt to her maturing tastes.

folkloric charm
Is fall your favorite season? Then you’ll love the lively, toasty
colors of the Folkloric Charm palette card #7. These colors
evoke a sense of warmth and security that’s especially suited
to dining rooms and kitchens: They produce a comfortable,
conversation-sparking environment. Folkloric Charm’s colors
also conjure up images of natural dyes seen in the handcrafted
objects that well-traveled types bring home from countries
around the world. The dining room shown here belongs to just
such a globe-trotting type. To paint this space, we picked:
walls: Peppery SW 6615
upper walls and ceiling: Sundance SW 6897
for room accents, include:
sophisticated serenity
Soothing, yes. Sedate? Never. These colors let you
keep your cool, without ever losing your sense of
style. The blues, purples, and grays of the
Sophisticated Serenity palette card #13 work
wonders at transforming a master bedroom into a
restful getaway. To paint this room, Sherwin-Williams
color experts chose:
walls: Foggy Day SW 6235
ceiling: Mauve Finery SW 6282
trim: Pure White SW 7005
Other palette colors, used as inspiration for
furnishings including pillows and curtains, include:
Misty SW 6232
Quixotic Plum SW 6265
Mature Grape SW 6286
Languid Blue SW 6226
Natural light and the direction of exposure affect
the way a color looks. Think about whether your
room has a sunny southern or less-bright northern
exposure, and take into account the number and
size of your windows. As a rule, a color will
appear one or two shades darker on your wall
than it did on the paint chip.
The corner bedroom shown on these pages was
built with many windows, and has two exposures.
Because it basks in so much sunlight, it’s an ideal
choice for showing off the deep, rich colors
of the Sophisticated Serenity palette.
Warm, spicy hues make anyone feel at home. They’re beautifully
soft and anything but boring. To enhance the welcoming air of
this fireplace-centered library in a century-old farmhouse, we’ve
chosen four colors from the Gracious Warmth palette card #3:
walls: Halcyon Green SW 6213
ceiling: Ancestral Gold SW 6407
shelving fronts: Biscuit SW 6112
bookcase interiors: Red Bay SW 6321
Colors for furnishings in this room
were inspired by:
Garden Gate SW 6167
When you choose paint colors for a room,
consider your existing furniture. You may
want to select a color inspired by a favorite
fabric or antique. Sherwin-Williams
experts suggest trying out a prospective
paint choice next to your belongings to
preview its effect. For example, a bright
turquoise wall hue might have made the
Garden Gate
subtle, moss-tone upholsteries in this
library look faded or dowdy. Gentle
gracious
Halcyon Green sets them off quite nicely.
Just after World War II,
newlyweds across the United
States began building ranch
Arts & Crafts
houses—rambling, one-story structures with attached
garages. These houses characterized much of the building boom of the
1950s and 1960s, and are still being built today. A ranch’s exterior siding
America’s most popular house style from about 1900
often combines clapboards with shingles or brick. Suggested for the ranch
Victorian
Victorian homes are sometimes painted in a whimsical
and colorful manner, inspired by the “painted ladies” in
San Francisco. In most people’s minds, these houses,
spanning most of the 19th century, are characterized by
many gables, wraparound porches with turned posts, lacy
“gingerbread” or fancy cast-iron trim, and even the
occasional turret. Victorian exteriors call for multicolor
schemes, left:
Colonial
Colonial is perhaps the most enduring of American house styles.
Gracious, symmetrically laid out houses first appeared in this
country in the 1700s: In New England, they usually were faced
with shingles or clapboards, while in the South early settlers used
bricks. In the late 1800s, Colonial-style
houses became popular again, and the
revival born at that time has never completely
disappeared—many brand-new houses still
are constructed in this traditional style. A
house, left, include:
