6 Planning your holiday

The hard part is over; you’ve decided where to go, now it comes down to the organising. 

Sometimes it is the basic things that we tend to forget, so Qantas Holidays has compiled some tips 

to simplify your planning. We’ve also included a checklist so you don’t forget the vital things. 

k Climate 

Vanuatu, Samoa, Tonga and the Cook Islands offer a 

warm tropical climate year round. The destinations 

generally feature higher temperatures, humidity and 

tropical rain during the summer months of December 

to April with an average temperature of 26-30°C. From 

May to November the weather is generally cooler and 

drier, with an average temperature of 21-25°C. The 

actual weather experienced can vary between different 

island regions due to geographical variations. 

New Caledonia features a warm, subtropical climate. 

Temperatures are generally higher from October to 

March with an average 25°C and rain during the summer 

months. The average temperature June to September is 

around 20°C with seasons less defined on the East Coast. 

Tahiti has year round climate with average temperatures 

28-33°C. The climate is warmer and more humid 

November through to March, and drier and cooler 

between April and October. 

Norfolk’s climate is subtropical. Summer temperatures 

(December-March) average about 25°C and winter 

temperatures (June-September) average about 18°C.

Each South Pacific country uses a different currency.

i Tipping and etiquette 

Tipping is not encouraged in the South Pacific, however, 

it is up to you to determine whether or not to pay a 

tip. Some resorts offer a staff social fund where tips

g Electricity 

The electrical current and hertz cycles vary in the South 

Pacific from 220 to 240 volts and 50-60 hertz cycles. 

m Clothing 

Visitors to the South Pacific need only a light, tropical 

wardrobe. Swimwear, shorts and T-shirts are a must, 

as is a sulu or sarong – a colourful piece of light cotton 

material used as a wrap for both men and women over 

swimwear. The emphasis is on casual attire, with a 

possible need to dress in smart casuals for dinner. 

Be sure to take a good sun hat, sunglasses and a pair of 

sandshoes or reef sandals.

Scattered over an expanse of glistening ocean, the Cook 

Islands are a combination of charming Polynesian culture

to last a lifetime. A short drive away is the legendary To Sua Trench, one of the most iconic and magical sites in 

Samoa. Swimming through the trench is an exhilarating experience, which is accessed only through a steep 30 foot 

ladder. Just across the lagoon is Namua Island – a place where you can swim with turtles in their natural habitat.

Take the inter-island ferry to the big island of Savai’i. Snorkel in the pristine waters at Manase or go surfing at the

before heading west to witness nature at its most powerful at Taga Blowholes. For a surreal experience, take a walk along the lava fields at Saleaula where you can visit the miraculous

Booking fee: Your travel agency may 

apply a booking fee in addition to the 

price of your holiday package. Please

Payment: A non-refundable deposit 

is payable within seven days of

impose cancellation fees amounting to 

all or part of the total price paid. Once

cannot cancel or obtain a refund on any 

component of your booking regardless of 

whether you use it. 

Changes by you: If you change your 

holiday package and your documents 

need to be reissued, a change fee is 

payable at the time of the change:

Unforseen changes: If we have to change 

any part of your booking, for example, if 

an airline changes its schedules or your

in which case we will refund the amount
