Quality Door-to-Door Coach Holidays 2012
More than just a holiday…?
I used to think that “More Than” was a
somewhat ridiculous name. However, whilst
reflecting on the thousands of customers who
have enjoyed a holiday with us since Roadmark
began in 1989, I am not so sure. A holiday with
Roadmark really is “More Than” just another
coach tour, and for all kinds of reasons. With
Roadmark Travel you can expect…
■ Good company and a friendly holiday atmosphere
■ An experienced, professional and, above all, caring
driver (nearly all Roadmark drivers have been with
the Company for many years)
■ A comfortable air-conditioned coach with the latest
safety features. Coach travel is one of the most
environmentally friendly means of transport
■ Quality hotels (the majority of the hotels we use are
3 or 4 star and have a lift. Many have leisure facilities
and swimming pools)
■ Door to door service on all tours. We do not use feeder
coaches, making just two or three pick-ups before
heading off to the holiday destination
■ No worries about handling your luggage or long
queues at airports
■ Excellent value-for-money with excursions
included
DOOR-TO-DOOR SERVICE
Every tour in this brochure includes DOOR-TO-DOOR SERVICE. This means that
we will collect you by taxi at the start and take you home at the end of your
holiday. We include this service in the cost of the holiday, providing that the pickup
address is within a 15-mile radius of Storrington or Horsham Station. If you
live further away we are normally able to arrange a taxi but there will be an
additional cost involved. If unsure please enquire when booking.
with Tony Pragnell
TONY PRAGNELL has developed quite a following among Roadmark Travel clients
and become well known for his professionalism, caring and attentive manner. These
attributes, combined with his depth of knowledge and the meticulous planning he puts into every
tour make Tony a firm favourite with Roadmark passengers.
We are delighted that Tony has planned and will be accompanying three Roadmark holidays in 2012:
Each of the holidays in
this brochure has been
carefully planned to
let you see the best of
each area at a relaxed and
enjoyable pace. Whenever
possible we try to make the journey
part of your holiday, making refreshment stops at places of
interest or National Trust properties rather than use motorway
service areas. We often employ Blue Badge Guides who will share
their wealth of knowledge and expertise to enhance your
enjoyment of a tour. Above all we take pride in the personal
service and attention to detail we offer from the moment you call
to book your holiday to the day our taxi returns you to your front
door. Please take a look through this brochure and consider
joining us in 2012 – you will be most welcome – and allow us to
prove that a Roadmark tour really is “More Than” just an
ordinary coach holiday.
Insurance is compulsory for all our UK and European tours, and Roadmark has
previously included Travel Insurance in the cost of your holiday. However, due to
increasing premiums and the fact that more of our clients now have their own
cover, we have decided to offer insurance as an optional “add-on” to holidays.
The choice of insurance provider is yours, but we believe that our “Emerald”
Insurance provides an excellent level of protection with rates that compare
favourably with other coach companies. The cost of our cover is clearly shown in
the price panel for each holiday, and on page 29 we provide the important
information you need to know about our Travel Insurance. Roadmark’s Emerald
Insurance has no upper age limit.

late and often enjoy a mid-afternoon siesta. For your
DAY 6 We are off to Bilbao today. This lively city is the capital of
the Basque region. Since the opening of the Guggenheim Museum
in 1997 the city has given itself a new lease of life as a tourism
destination. This amazing building is clad with curved titanium
panels and has been hailed as an architectural masterpiece. It
houses a collection of outstanding 20th century art, with works by
Picasso and Warhol. There is so much to see in Bilbao besides the
Guggenheim. One of the best ways to explore is by open-top
sightseeing bus, and this option will be available to you – details
will be available nearer the time (supplement applies). There is easy
walking along the river to the Maritime Museum or towards the
atmospheric old quarter known as the Casco Viejo. Our final night
main course (other choices available on request), a glass of Rioja
and special liquor from Potes.
historic market hall filled with tapas bars, and walks through the
gardens of the 19th century Magdalena Palace. There will be time
to explore and treat yourself to a farewell lunch before boarding
SIDMOUTH
Tuesday 15th May for 6 days
The elegant regency town of Sidmouth is flanked by glorious cliff scenery and was once described by John Betjeman as “A Town caught still in a
timeless charm”.There is no doubt that this pretty seaside town has an unhurried and appealing pace of life, with friendly small shops, beautiful
gardens and a majestic promenade. Sidmouth is considered a “floral town”, having won many awards for the colourful displays in its parks and gardens.
It provides the ideal setting for a restful holiday and is always a very popular destination with Roadmark clients.
HOLIDAY ITINERARY
DAY 1 Our journey to the West Country takes us via the
beautiful hilltop town of Shaftesbury where we pause to provide
time for lunch and to admire the views across the tranquil
Blackmoor Vale from the top of Gold Hill (remember the famous
Hovis advert?). By late afternoon we reach Sidmouth where a
delicious dinner awaits.
DAY 2 This morning you can explore the town, which lies on the
Hotel’s doorstep. There are gentle walks alongside the pretty little
River Sid and at the western end of the promenade you will find
the Connaught Gardens, named after the third son of Queen
Victoria. A tall white set of steps known as “Jacobs Ladder”
connects the Gardens to the beach below. This afternoon we
travel to Tiverton, home to the Grand Western Canal where we
include a cruise on the horse-drawn barge “Tivertonian” through
peaceful Devon countryside.
DAY 3 Our first stop will be in the smuggling village of Beer where
the main street slopes down to a picturesque cove. We continue to
the seaside town of Seaton and, after time to explore and find
lunch, we will take the unique narrow-gauge electric tramway to
Colyford. The tram travels alongside the estuary of the River Axe
through two nature reserves, providing good views of the abundant
bird life. This afternoon we visit Burrow Farm Gardens, East Devon’s
secret garden. This 10-acre garden has a variety of different
planting styles that complement the stunning rural views.
DAY 4 Today is “Dartmoor Day”. We make our way to the Moor
via Bovey Tracey (coffee stop) and Moretonhampstead. The road
twists and climbs up into the National Park with amazing views
of the wild, desolate landscape with its distinctive granite tors
and the famous Dartmoor Ponies. We reach the ancient stannary
town of Tavistock for a lunch stop before returning to Sidmouth
via a more direct route.
DAY 5 A free day in which to enjoy the charms of Sidmouth and
to get to know the town and its surrounding area a little better.
DAY 6 Leaving Sidmouth we follow the Devon and Dorset coast
through Lyme Regis and pretty villages like Burton Bradstock and
gearing up for its important role in the Olympic Games. Later we
return to Sussex for taxis home to your door.
We have been using the Royal York and Faulkner Hotel
successfully for many years and are assured of a warm
welcome. Run by the Hook family, resident proprietors for
more than 60 years, the Hotel has a reputation for good
food, hospitality and comfort. The attractive Regency
building dates from 1810 and occupies a prime position on
the Esplanade within easy reach of the Town’s shops and
other attractions. There is a lift to all floors. The Hotel has spa
facilities with a hydrotherapy pool, steam cabin, sauna and
loungers for relaxing.
£495 per person
There is always a high demand for single rooms on this
tour, with the number of requests far exceeding the
number of available rooms. As there is already a long
waiting list for singles from previous years we have
decided that the fairest way will be to offer single rooms
to clients already on the waiting list, whom we will be
contacting in order. Therefore only twin and double rooms
are available for this holiday to Sidmouth.
PEAK ATTRACTIONS
includes Derbyshire Well Dressings and Chatsworth House
Sunday 27th May for 5 days
After a break of several years we are returning to the imposing Willersley Castle Hotel near Matlock to explore the beautiful Derbyshire Peak District
with its spectacular National Park and wealth of attractions.
HOLIDAY ITINERARY
DAY 1 A Roadmark taxi will collect you from home and bring
you to the coach to join your fellow travellers. We drive through
the Midlands to The National Memorial Arboretum in
Staffordshire. The UK’s centre of Remembrance, the Arboretum
comprises 150 acres of wooded parkland and gardens, and is
home to the Armed Forces Memorial honouring the 16,000 UK
Armed Services Personnel who have died in service since the end
of World War II. We continue through Ashbourne, passing
Carsington Water on the way to our Hotel just outside the historic
village of Cromford.
DAY 2 Today we will be joined by a Blue Badge Guide for a
beautiful scenic tour of the Peak District. We will hear the story of
Eyam, one of the best-preserved villages and the famous “Plague
Village” which went into quarantine when the plague was
imported from London in 1665. Our Guide will also introduce us
to the ancient Derbyshire custom of Well Dressing. During the
Well Dressing season wells or springs are lavishly decorated using
local plants and flowers mounted onto wooden frames. No two
designs are ever the same, and dressing a well can take villagers
up to a week to complete. At the time of going to press the 2012
calendar was not available but we will endeavour to include a
visit to at least one Well Dressing.
DAY 3 This morning you can choose either to relax at the Hotel
(there is a large indoor swimming pool and comfortable lounge)
or join a leisurely walk into Cromford. We will be joined by a
guide for a tour of this historic village to learn about the factory
community founded by Sir Richard Arkwright who built the
world’s first successful water powered cotton spinning mill here.
You will see the workers’ housing, the market place, the Lock Up,
the millpond and the Cromford Canal. This afternoon we visit Lea
Gardens, a 4-acre garden created from 1935 on the northern
slope of the Amber Valley. Enjoy a unique collection of highly
acclaimed rhododendrons, azaleas, kalmias and other plants
collected from the far corners of the world (and perhaps one of
the delicious homemade cakes in the tearoom!).
DAY 4 We spend a while in Bakewell, an attractive town on the
River Wye and famous for its puddings, then continue through
Ashford in the Water and Millers Dale to spend the afternoon at
Chatsworth House. Home to the Duke of Devonshire, the historic
house contains one of Europe’s most significant art collections
and is surrounded by 150 acres of gardens with giant water
features, sculpture and beautiful flowers.
DAY 5 We leave Willersley Castle and take a short drive to the
old stone-quarrying town of Wirksworth, surrounded by great
limestone rocks. Here we join a train for a nine-mile journey on
the community-owned Ecclesbourne Valley Railway. Enjoy
beautiful rural scenery on the trip to Duffield where the coach will
be waiting. Before leaving for home we will call at the Denby
Pottery Visitor Centre where there will be time for lunch and some
SWISS LAKES & MOUNTAINS
Saturday 2nd June for 8 days
We return to Switzerland to stay at one of our favourite hotels, the Paxmontana in the tranquil village of Flueli-Ranft on a plateau above Lake Sarnen.
From here we shall be exploring the very best of the Swiss Alps, visiting the beautiful city of Lucerne and enjoying trips on two spectacular narrowgauge
rack railways.
HOLIDAY ITINERARY
DAY 1 We drive to Dover for the short Channel ferry crossing
then make our way through France, Belgium and Luxembourg to
Saarlouis just across the German border. Our overnight hotel here
is Victor’s Residenz – enjoy dinner on arrival.
DAY 2 We drive south through France and cross into Switzerland
at Basel. During the afternoon we continue southeast through
Central Switzerland to our Hotel about half an hour south of
Lucerne. Enjoy a welcome drink before dinner this evening.
DAY 3 After breakfast we travel via the Brunig Pass to the
attractive village of BRIENZ, which lies at the eastern end of the
lake with which it shares a name. Visit some of the woodcarving
shops for which Brienz is famous and enjoy a stroll along the
lakeside promenade. We shall continue along Lake Brienz through
Interlaken to Wilderswil. This is the starting point for the first of
our unforgettable cogwheel train journeys. Since 1893 the little
trains have been transporting visitors up to the SCHYNIGE
PLATTE, a superb vantage point with fine views of the Eiger,
Monch and Jungfrau. The nostalgic trip takes 50 minutes and
uses carriages from the 19th century with wooden seats and
conductors with historic uniforms. Adjacent to the summit station
is the BOTANICAL ALPINE GARDEN where you will find over 500
species of plants native to the Swiss Alps. Admission is included.
DAY 4 Today we visit the charming village of ENGELBERG at the
foot of Mount Titlis. We shall visit the Show Cheese Factory
located within a Benedictine Monastery. There will be a cheesemaking
demonstration and chance to buy from a selection of
regional cheeses and souvenirs. There will also be the opportunity
to take a ride on the world’s first revolving cable car to “heaven”
at over 3000 metres (10,000 feet). An additional charge will
apply for the cable car and we will send you details and prices
nearer the time of your holiday.
DAY 5 We travel to LUCERNE to see its beautiful old town of
medieval buildings and the famous wooden ‘Kapellbrucke’
spanning the River Reuss. The bridge was built in 1333 and is the
oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe. There will be a guided
walking tour followed by time for lunch. In the afternoon we take
a relaxing cruise on the Vierwaldstattersee (Lake Lucerne). Many
consider this to be the most beautiful lake in Switzerland, with
spectacular mountains on all sides and forests coming down to
the shore in many places.
DAY 6 A short coach ride takes us to Alpnachstad, from where
we will commence a journey on the world’s steepest cogwheel
railway, the PILATUSBAHN. The train winds its way up through lush
meadows carpeted with Alpine flowers, past crystal clear mountain
streams and sheer rock faces. In places the gradient is 48%!
Opened in 1889 the line was electrified in 1937. From the 2132
metre (7000 feet) summit are breathtaking views over Central
Switzerland, the Alps and Lake Lucerne. When composer Richard
Wagner visited in 1859 he was inspired to write The Ring of the
Nieblungs, and Queen Victoria once made the trip on horseback.
DAY 7 We cross the border into France and take a delightful
detour through part of the stunning Alsace wine region. We will
make a stop in the medieval town of RIQUEWIHR, nestling
between the Vosges Mountains and surrounded by some of the
most famous vineyards in Alsace. There will be time to explore its
tiny streets, ancient walls and flower bedecked houses and to find
lunch before we rejoin the motorway to Metz, where we spend
tonight at the Hotel Mercure.
DAY 8 To Calais for a return ferry crossing to the UK, reaching
Sussex around mid-evening.
FOLLOWING HIS VISIT TO GUNTON HALL IN
SUFFOLK, LES FROM ROADMARK WROTE:
“Gunton Hall is delightfully different to other Warner locations I
have experienced and I have no hesitation in recommending it to
you. Accommodation is in well appointed, spacious chalets in a
gladed setting around 50 acres of grounds with a carefullytended
walled garden and a freshwater lake. Every chalet, of
course, is on the ground floor but we must point out that this
holiday is not suitable for those with walking difficulties as you
must walk through the grounds to your chalet and this could be
100 yards, 200 yards or 300 yards. There is entertainment every
night and a variety of things to do during the day – pitch ‘n’ putt,
croquet, table tennis, snooker, archery etc. The 22 metre heated
swimming pool is impressive. An enjoyable part of my stay at
Gunton Hall was tea with my wife on the patio of our chalet. The
only sound was the birdsong.”
If you have already been on a Warner holiday (they are for adults
pier, gaol and courthouse. This afternoon enjoy a cruise on the
Menai Strait to Puffin Island. The small Island is situated just off
the coast and is home to an abundance of seabirds.
GARDENS OF THE WEST COUNTRY
AND THE SCILLY ISLES
Accompanied by Mark Anderson
Wednesday 25th July for 8 days
Adrift in the Atlantic, 28 miles off the Cornish
coast, the Isles of Scilly are so serene and
relaxed that they may belong to a different era.
The five inhabited islands have a population of
just 2,000 and only 900 vehicles between them, a
far cry from the hectic pace of mainland Britain.
Roadmark last visited in 2010 when we enjoyed a
comfortable stay at the friendly, family-run Bell
Rock Hotel, which found favour with our clients.
We shall be returning there in 2012 and have
devised a new itinerary featuring an unhurried
journey and plenty of time in which to get to
know these unique islands. Unlike most tour
operators who travel by plane or helicopter, we
have opted for the more leisurely sea crossing on
the Island ferry.
HOLIDAY ITINERARY
DAY 1 Taxi pick-up from your home to the coach to join your
driver/guide Mark and fellow passengers. We make our way to
MONTACUTE HOUSE in Somerset, a glittering Elizabethan house,
adorned with renaissance features and over 60 Tudor portraits in
The Long Gallery. The formal garden includes mixed borders, old
roses and topiary and is surrounded by a landscape park. We
continue to the Best Western Tiverton Hotel for an overnight stay
with dinner and breakfast included.
DAY 2 After breakfast we travel to LANHYDROCK HOUSE &
GARDEN near Bodmin. Lanhydrock is one of the most fascinating
and complete late 19th century houses in England with
spectacular gardens. This afternoon we visit TRERICE, a delightful
16 Roadmark Reservations 01903 741233
manor house dating from 1571 with a peaceful garden and
Cornish orchard. We will stay overnight with dinner and breakfast
at the comfortable PENVENTON PARK HOTEL, a privately run 3star
country house hotel set in attractive grounds close to Redruth.
DAY 3 An early start for the short 18-mile drive to Penzance. We
cross to the Scilly Isles aboard the ferry SCILLONIAN III. During
the three-hour crossing you can relax on the upper deck as we
travel along the rugged Cornish coastline. There are lounges with
comfortable seating and a licensed buffet serving snacks and
light refreshments. We arrive in St.Mary’s at around lunchtime
and transfer to the Bell Rock Hotel, allowing a leisurely afternoon
in which to explore Hugh Town with its sandy beaches, small
shops, pubs and museum.
DAYS 4-6 The Scilly Isles have been inhabited since stone-age
times and have one of the highest concentrations of prehistoric
sites in Britain. During your stay there will be ample time to
explore the Islands natural beauty and visit many of the most
interesting places. The Scillys are a bird watchers paradise and
you can book optional boat trips to see birds, seals, the Bishops
Rock Lighthouse and the more remote unpopulated islands. You
can decide whether to explore on your own or join one of our
guided walks and excursions – a full list of the options available
will be sent to you nearer the time and will include:
A full day boat cruise to TRESCO* for a visit to the world
famous ABBEY GARDENS
sightseeing and perhaps some souvenir shopping. For the final
night of the holiday we return to the PENVENTON PARK HOTEL at
Redruth. Dinner and breakfast included.
DAY 8 We travel back by coach to Sussex, reaching home by late
“FLORIADE 2012”
Friday 17th August for 5 days
In summer 2012 Holland will once again be the host for Floriade, the unique and unmissable World Horticultural Exhibition. This spectacular event is
staged only once every ten years and has an international flavour. Discover the most exquisite and exceptional flowers, plants and trees from all four
corners of the globe, presented across landscaped grounds in a natural forest setting. There will be modern architecture, glasshouses and pavilions to
explore with a programme of music, dance, theatre performances and visual art.The exhibition takes place near Venlo in the southern Netherlands, and
you will be staying in the charming old town of Monschau, just over the border in Germany.
HOLIDAY ITINERARY
DAY 1 A taxi will collect you from home and bring you to the
coach to join your fellow travellers. We head to Dover for the
short sea crossing to France. We make our way across Belgium
and on to Monschau for a four-night stay. Enjoy a complimentary
welcome drink before dinner this evening.
DAY 2 This morning explore Monschau, either on foot or on the
little sightseeing train (additional cost applies) that winds its way
around the narrow streets. Discover the half-timbered houses,
visit the Red House Museum to see how the wealthy merchants
lived or take a stroll to the castle for a panoramic view of the
town and valley below. This afternoon we visit Aachen, the most
westerly town in Germany. It has some stunning architectural
masterpieces, including the impressive Gothic Cathedral and the
Elisenbrunnen bathhouses.
DAY 3 It is about an hour and a half’s drive to Venlo, where we
shall spend the day visiting the Floriade Park. There are five
themed areas, each separated by woodlands. Each theme
represents a different world, and you can take the Floriade
Cablecar from one side of the park to the other, providing a
unique aerial view. There are a number of restaurants serving
regional dishes and refreshments.
DAY 4 A full day excursion exploring the Ahr Valley, a beautiful
corner of Germany that is often overlooked. Romantics once
called the Ahr Valley “The Wildest Daughter of the Rhine” and the
scenery is magnificent, with wonderful rock formations, ruins,
idyllic castles and picturesque terraced vineyards. First we visit the
town of Bad Munstereifel, which has extensive 13th century
fortifications and attractive shops and cafes along the River Erft.
We shall also stop in Altenahr, a picturesque village set in a deep
gorge on the River Ahr. There will be time to explore and take the
chairlift for panoramic views of the area. This area is well known
for its red wine (unusual in Germany which produces mainly
white) and we shall follow the wine route through to the
medieval walled town of Ahrweiler. The town is well preserved
with Roman remains, small shops and wine taverns in the halftimbered
houses.
DAY 5 We take a short hop across the border to Spa. Often
referred to as “The Pearl of the Ardennes”, this attractive town
lies in a heavily wooded valley and is famous for the health-giving
properties of its hot springs. It has the oldest casino in the world
and produces the famous “Spa” mineral water. From Spa we
return to Calais for a late afternoon ferry crossing home.
Your Holiday Hotel
We received favourable comments about the Hotel Carat
in Monschau on a previous visit and are returning to this
four-star hotel situated in a quiet location only 300 metres
from the town centre. Monschau has to be seen to be
believed - a real hidden treasure of a town, nestling among
the wooded Eifel Hills close to the border with Belgium. Left
unscathed after WWII it is one of Germany’s most beautiful
towns, with winding cobbled streets and wonderfully
preserved buildings dating from its time as a thriving linen
centre. Bedrooms at the Carat Hotel have wooden floors,
modern furnishings and are accessible by lift. There is a large
A BRIDGE TOO FAR – ARNHEM & NIJMEGEN
Sunday 19th August for 5 days
Accompanied by Colonel Richard Bland
This fascinating and informative tour takes you to a beautiful part of Holland to discover the story of OPERATION MARKET GARDEN – THE GAMBLE
THAT FAILED.Those who have watched the epic 60’s movie, ‘A Bridge Too Far’ will be familiar with the battle at Arnhem Bridge. Since then, more
research has revealed the reasons why the operation was launched – and why, ultimately, it failed. Was the operation even necessary? Why did the ultracautious
Monty sanction it? Why were intelligence reports from the Dutch Resistance ignored? What was Daphne du Maurier’s husband’s role in
Operation Market Garden? Did the Germans have advance warning of the operation? Would success have meant an earlier end to the War?
The tour, which is a combination of a Battlefield
Tour and a Pilgrimage, will offer answers to all
these questions, visiting the drop zones used by
the men going to war in what was then a new –
and hazardous – way. Those who are less
focussed on the military detail will enjoy a tour
through one of the most attractive areas of the
Netherlands, including the Dutch ‘mountains’ at
Bergendaal on the German border. Also included,
a trip into Germany, to the Reichswald, scene of
later fierce battles and site of the largest WW2
Commonwealth War Cemetery in Germany.
YOUR GUIDE
Dick Bland was a Regular Army Officer for 29 years, including two
tours in Northern Ireland, the second two-year tour commanding
a 600-strong Regiment. He qualified as a parachutist whilst
serving on secondment with the Canadian Armed Forces. A
graduate of the Staff College Camberley, he is a lifelong student
of military history, specialising in World War II. Since retirement he
has led many battlefield tours, aiming both to inform and
entertain. We are sure that you will enjoy Dick’s amiable manner
and easy-going, highly professional style of presentation, which is
underpinned by his detailed subject knowledge.
CRYSTAL LAKES & ALPINE PEAKS
Saturday 25th August for 9 days
In 2011 we operated our first holiday to Lake Annecy, surely the most delightful lake in France.Annecy is in the spectacular Haute-Savoie alpine region,
surrounded by some of Europe’s highest mountains. The tour was devised and accompanied by Tour Guide Tony Pragnell. Following the holiday we
received so many favourable comments from clients that we have asked Tony to repeat the trip. The delightful family-run Hotel Les Grillons played a large
part of the success of the holiday, with comfortable rooms and great food, and once again we shall be occupying the entire Hotel. The itinerary will be
much the same as in 2011.
THE TOUR INCLUDES:
lake, with a small mediaeval quarter laced with canals, pastel
facades, flower covered bridges and old arcaded streets, along
and Museum. We visit on market day, renowned for its colourful
atmosphere and great local produce. We also include a boat trip
on the lake.
THREE NATIONAL PARKS &
THE BLACKPOOL ILLUMINATIONS
Friday 12th October for 4 days
Astrange combination you may say, but this short break holiday provides an excellent opportunity to travel through amazing scenery in three of our
finest National Parks, and also to enjoy the world-famous Blackpool Illuminations.
HOLIDAY ITINERARY
FRIDAY A taxi will collect you from home to join your fellow
passengers on the coach. We travel through the Midlands to the
small cathedral city of LICHFIELD where there will be time to
explore and find lunch. Continuing northwards we cross into
Derbyshire and the PEAK DISTRICT NATIONAL PARK. In 1951 the
Peak District was designated as the very first National Park in
Britain. We drive through the so-called “White Peak” with its
distinctive limestone quarries to the spa town of BUXTON where
we shall make a short stop. A trip across the scenic “Cat &
Fiddle” road brings us to the motorway and we continue to our
Hotel on the outskirts of Preston.
SATURDAY After breakfast we travel via Lancaster then follow
the Lune Valley to Sedburgh on the edge of the YORKSHIRE
DALES NATIONAL PARK. Slightly younger than the Peak District,
the Park was created in 1954 and covers 680 square miles.
The Dales are characterised by broad, winding u-shaped valleys,
gentle hills, rivers, streams and woodlands. There are abundant
old stone farm buildings and endless miles of dry stone walls.
We shall stop to find lunch in the Market Town of HAWES before
returning through Ribblesdale and Ingleton. We have arranged an
early dinner at the Hotel, following which we shall head for the
bright lights of BLACKPOOL, only about a half hour drive away.
The start of the modern Illuminations was in 1912 to mark the
first Royal visit to Blackpool. Princess Louise opened a new
section of promenade and some 10,000 garland lamps were
installed for the celebration. The results were so impressive that
the Chamber of Commerce persuaded the Council to stage the
lights again the following year. Today the dazzling display, which
we will tour by coach, costs around £2.5 million and stretches
almost six miles from Bispham to Starr Gate.
SUNDAY We travel north up the motorway into the LAKE
DISTRICT NATIONAL PARK. This vast area was carved out by
glaciers some 15,000 years ago and has four mountains over
3000 feet, including England’s highest. We make our way through
the Southern Lakes to Newby Bridge on Windermere, Britain’s
biggest natural lake. A one and a half hour cruise will take us the
full length of the lake and provide magnificent views of mountain
scenery, secluded bays and the many wooded islands. After the
boat trip there will be time to explore the lakeside village of
BOWNESS-ON-WINDERMERE with its shops, pubs and
restaurants, before returning to the Hotel.
MONDAY We make our way home to Sussex, arriving late
afternoon for taxis to your door.
THE BEST OF
GERMANY’S
CHRISTMAS
MARKETS
Thursday 6th
December for 5 days
For many people the most romantic season of
the year begins with the opening of
Christmas Markets, characterised by candlelight
and the aroma of traditional Christmas bakery,
gingerbread, stollen cakes, cinnamon cookies,
Gluhwein, mulled cider and other seasonal
delights.Whilst many of our own towns and
cities have a Christmas Market there is no
substitute for the real thing, and we have found
a super new hotel from which to visit some of
the best markets in the Rhineland.
HOLIDAY ITINERARY
DAY 1 We cross to France with Eurotunnel then drive through
Belgium and on to Konigswinter, where a welcome glass of
mulled wine will be served before dinner.
DAY 2 After sampling the delicious Maritim Hotel buffet
breakfast we set off for the City of COLOGNE, some 25 miles
from Konigswinter. First stop is at the LINDT CHOCOLATE
MUSEUM, housed in a spectacular glass and metal building at
the Rheinau harbour. Enjoy an expedition through 3000 years of
chocolate history and a great view of the barges on the River.
Following our visit the rest of the day is yours to explore Cologne
with its magnificent twin-spired Cathedral. The Cathedral
provides an impressive backdrop for one of the four big
Christmas Markets. Around the largest Christmas tree in the
Rhineland you will find over 150 wooden chalets selling a vast
range of high-quality products.
growing town of AHRWEILER. Surrounded by medieval town
less attractive, and the aroma of mulled wine from local vineyards
fills the air. We continue to BONN, Germany’s 19th largest city.
Impressive illuminated facades on Munsterplatz provide a festive
backdrop for the Christmas Market. The beautiful old town hall is
transformed into an enormous Advent calendar. Shops and stalls
are brimming with unusual gifts with plenty of mulled wine, hot
mead and chestnuts. Classical symphonies play in the background
while you shop.
town of KONIGSWINTER at the foot of the Drachenfels
Mountain. Later we shall take a scenic drive along the Rhine to
Old Town. Koblenz lies at the confluence of the Rhine and Mosel
4. If You Change Your Booking
If after our confirmation has been issued you wish to change your booking (e.g. change
to another holiday or departure date), we will do our best to make the changes provided
that we receive written notification from the person signing the booking form not later
than the date on which the balance of the original holiday cost was due for payment.
This must be accompanied by a payment of £25 to cover administration costs.
Any alteration by you made later than the original balance date will be treated as a
cancellation and subject to the charges set out in paragraph 3 above.
5. If You Have a Complaint
If you have a complaint during your holiday, please inform, in the first instance, the
supplier of the service and then inform our driver/courier, or representative, immediately,
who will do his/her best to help you there and then. If the matter cannot be resolved to
your satisfaction you must put your complaint in writing to Roadmark Travel Limited.
This should give full details of your complaint and be received by the Company not later
than 28 days following the return of your holiday. Failure to establish your complaint
immediately in accordance with the above procedure may affect the outcome of it.
6. Statutory Authorities & Conditions of Carriage
This brochure is issued subject to applicable Acts of Parliament and Government Regulations
and The Company reserves the right to modify itineraries to conform with requests from
competent authorities in the United Kingdom and any other sovereign state through which
the tours operate. Overland carriage may be in vehicles other than those owned by
Roadmark Travel Limited. When you travel on an aircraft, train or ship, the conditions of that
carrier apply and are subject to National and International conditions which may limit or
exclude liability. The Public Service Vehicle (Conduct of Drivers, Conductors and Passengers)
Regulations as amended 1990, apply to all coaches throughout any holiday in the UK.
7. Insurance
It is mandatory that you take out travel insurance at the time of booking a holiday.
The choice of holiday insurance cover is yours. However, Roadmark Travel Ltd has
arranged a policy through Giles Insurance Brokers, for whom Roadmark Travel is acting as
an Appointed Representative. The insurance is covered under master policy No.
COSSM40145 – 02 A&B. Giles Insurance Brokers is Authorised and Regulated by the
Financial Services Authority. If you choose to purchase Roadmark Travel Insurance we will
send you a policy document with your Holiday Confirmation. If the cover does not meet
your requirements please let us know within 14 days of receiving your policy document
and return it to us for a refund of your premium. Policy documents should be read
carefully and kept safely until the completion of your holiday. YOU SHOULD TAKE YOUR
INSURANCE POLICY DOCUMENT WITH YOU ON THE HOLIDAY.
EXISTING MEDICAL CONDITIONS (applies to both UK & EUROPE)
Your policy may not cover claims arising from your pre-existing medical conditions, so if
you have a medical condition and/or are taking prescribed medicine, it is essential that
you telephone Travellers Healthcheck on 08451 300 210 to advise them of your
condition/medication. You must also telephone the Healthcheck line if you are on a
waiting list for treatment, and if your condition or medication changes after you have
purchased your travel insurance.
8. Passports
For all holidays abroad you will require a full 10 year British Passport. If you do not hold a
full British Passport it may be possible to travel, provided that you have checked with the
appropriate immigration authorities of the Country(ies) to be visited whether a visa is
required, and that you are in possession of the visa and any other documentation necessary
for entry into that country(ies). The Company cannot accept responsibility for delays or
difficulties caused if passengers are not in possession of the correct travel documents.
9. Special Needs
We will accept lightweight wheelchairs for travel, subject to them being able to be folded
and stowed away in the luggage hold of the coach. We regret we are unable to accept
wheelchairs which are more than 20kg in weight. This means we cannot carry battery
powered wheelchairs or scooters that need to be taken apart for storage. We MUST be
advised at the time of booking that a folding wheelchair or walking aid is being taken on
a trip, as we have also to consider the luggage capacity of the coach.
Our drivers and escorts will be happy to provide general assistance to passengers but will
not be expected to:
• Provide assistance that extends to the bodily lifting and carrying of any
customers on and off the coach.
• Undertake any action that may put their health, safety, welfare or the legal
requirements for a break in duty at risk.
• Act as carers for customers at departure, during the journey or on arrival at
destination.
But whether you are planning a holiday overseas or in the UK, please notify us before you
book if you or any member of your party has special needs or suffer from any disability.
Unfortunately, many hotels do not provide adequate facilities for guests with mobility
problems or who suffer from other disabilities. We are keen to plan arrangements for your
holiday so that special needs and requests can be accommodated as far as possible. If you
will need assistance or special facilities in the hotel, or may have difficulties in taking part
in excursions or boarding and travelling on the coach or other means of transport you must
let us know in advance. Not all holidays in this brochure may be suitable for you. We want
you to enjoy your holiday and will try to help you select an appropriate trip. If you need
advice or further information you should contact Roadmark Travel Ltd.
9a. Health
If you are in any doubt as to whether your state of health may render you unfit to travel
you should consult your doctor and act on his/her advice. If a doctor confirms that you are
medically unfit to start your holiday it is essential that you cancel the holiday. In this case
you will normally be able to make a claim on your insurance. At the time of going to press
no special precautions regarding health matters were needed by travellers to the countries
mentioned in this brochure. However, regulations are subject to change and our clients are
responsible for complying with entry and current health requirements. For all foreign
holidays we advise you to obtain a copy of the Department of Health leaflet “Advice on
Health for Travellers”. If you are going on holiday to a member state of the EEC we advise
you to carry with you a EUROPEAN HEALTH INSURANCE CARD which entitles you to
benefit in kind during your stay. You can apply by telephone 0845 606 2030 or online at
www.ehic.org.uk
10. Door-to-Door Service
Our door-to-door service automatically applies unless stated, and provided that your
home (pick-up) address is within fifteen miles of one of our main holiday pick-up points,
which are STORRINGTON and HORSHAM STATION. We can usually arrange door-to-door
service for passengers outside our Fifteen-mile area at a supplementary charge.
11. Other Terms
(a) On any Roadmark holiday you are not permitted to bring a pet or any other animal
(other than Guide Dogs in the UK and Eire only and by prior arrangement).
(b) Smoking and the consumption of alcohol are strictly prohibited on Roadmark coaches.
(c) You are not permitted to play a radio, cassette or CD player on Roadmark coaches.
(d) Excursions are included in the price of most Roadmark holidays and refunds cannot
be made for passengers who do not wish to go on these excursions. Admission fees
to buildings, grounds etc. are not included in the price of the holiday unless
otherwise stated in the brochure.
1. Your Holiday Price
We will only increase the price of your holiday in the following, limited circumstances:
i) If there is an increase in the cost of transportation, including fuel and fuel tax,
ferry operator fares and tolls, airfares and embarkation or disembarkation fees at
terminals.
ii) If there is an increase in applicable duties or taxes (including the rate of VAT).
iii) Adverse currency exchange rate variations.
Even in the event of increases in the above, we will absorb an amount equivalent to 2%
of the holiday price. We will not alter the price of your holiday within 30 days of
departure. In addition to Sterling we use the Euro in calculating our holiday prices for
2012 at an exchange rate of £1 = €1.1
2. If We Change Your Holiday
Every effort will be made to operate all the holidays as advertised, but arrangements are
made many months in advance and changes are, therefore, sometimes unavoidable. Most
changes are likely to be minor, but where a change is significant we will notify you as
soon as possible. Significant changes are those that involve changing your departure or
return date, the location of resort, quality of your main hotel (not single overnight hotels),
or tour itinerary changes which involve a main destination being completely eliminated.
(e) Roadmark Travel Limited reserves the unconditional right to refuse a booking or to
terminate a client’s holiday in the event of unreasonable conduct which in our
opinion is likely to cause damage, distress, danger or annoyance to other clients,
employees, property or to any third party.
This may also relate to unsuitable or inappropriate attire being worn in places such as
restaurants and hotels. The minimum standard dress code is normally smart/casual.
If you are prevented from travelling or continuing your holiday by such a termination our
responsibility for your holiday thereupon ceases. Full cancellation charges will apply and
Roadmark Travel Limited will be under no obligation for any refund, compensation or loss
which you may incur.
Our Obligation To You forms part of the Holiday Terms & Conditions
In the event of such a significant change you can decide either:
a) To continue with the holiday as amended or
b) To accept an alternative holiday we may offer you with an appropriate increase or
reduction in price, or
c) To cancel your booking, and receive a full refund of all monies paid by you.
3. If We Cancel Your Holiday
It is necessary for there to be a minimum number of passengers in order to operate a
holiday. This number will vary depending on the tour, and the minimum for each holiday is
available from Roadmark Travel on request. If this minimum number is not achieved we
reserve the right to cancel the holiday. In this case we will offer you the choice of a full
refund of all the monies you have paid to us, or an alternative holiday if one is available.
However, we-will not cancel your holiday after the balance date unless (a) You have not
paid for your holiday in full or (b) Your holiday is influenced by events beyond our control
such as hostilities, political unrest, industrial action, natural disasters, severe weather,
technical problems to transport, Governmental action or other circumstance amounting to
force majeure. If we have to cancel your holiday The Company is liable only for any
monies you have paid to us at the time.
HOW TO BOOK your ROADMARK holiday
We are now taking bookings by telephone for all the holidays in this
brochure. To book any tour please use the following procedure:
1) Telephone Roadmark on 01903 741233 to check the availability of your chosen
reservation. We will give you a unique BOOKING REFERENCE NUMBER that should
be written in the space on the booking form and quoted in all correspondence.
2) To confirm your booking please complete a Booking Form (there are two in the
centre of this brochure and further copies available on request). Send the completed
If you are purchasing Roadmark Travel Insurance you should also include the
Insurance Premium. Please make cheques payable to “Roadmark Travel Ltd”.
We must receive the booking form and deposit within 14 days of your provisional
reservation.
3) We will send you a confirmation showing your tour details, seat number(s), the
deposit paid, and when the final balance is due. Please check that all the details
on your confirmation are correct and inform us immediately if anything is wrong.
You are asked to send us the balance of payment by the date stated on the
confirmation, as no further reminders will be sent.
4) A few days prior to departure you will receive a letter giving details of your pick-up
OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION about ROADMARK Holidays
What is included in the cost? – Unless stated, your holiday with Roadmark Travel
includes DOOR-TO-DOOR SERVICE (see below), return coach travel, excursions and
admissions as detailed in the tour itinerary.
Door-to-door Service – We will normally send a taxi to collect you from your home
at the beginning of a holiday and return you there at the end, providing that the pick-up
address is within fifteen miles of Storrington or Horsham Station. We may be able to
arrange taxis for those who live outside this area at a supplementary cost – please
enquire for details.
Single Rooms – There is always a high demand for single rooms, the supply of which is,
in most cases, limited. We strongly recommend that clients requiring single
accommodation make their booking as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
Where single room supplements apply we try to keep these to a minimum.
Passports – You must bring a passport on all Continental Tours. For tours outside E.U.
area your passport should have a minimum of six months vailidity remaining on the return
date. If the holiday is to, or passes through, a member state of the E.E.C. we advise you to
obtain and carry with you a EUROPEAN HEALTH INSURANCE CARD that entitles you
medical benefits in member countries. An application form may be obtained from the
Post Office or you can apply by telephone 0845 606 2030 or online at
www.eu-healthcard.com
Insurance – If you are not taking Roadmark Travel “Emerald” Insurance you should
advise us the name and telephone number of your insurer and your policy number.
There is a space for this on the Booking Form.
Special Requests – Please tell us of any special requirements you may have when
booking. These should also be written in the space on your booking form. We will, of
course, do our best to meet these, but cannot guarantee particular requests. We
recommend that clients who require special diets contact the hotel restaurant manager
immediately on arrival.
No-Smoking Policy – In the interests of the health, safety and comfort of all
passengers, smoking and the consumption of alcohol are prohibited on Roadmark
coaches. Some hotels now operate a no-smoking policy in bedrooms.
Please advise us if you require a room for smokers.
Tea & Coffee Making Facilities – On most holidays in the UK you will find that tea
and coffee trays are provided in your room. It is, however, rare to find this facility in
hotels abroad.
Meal Arrangements – On all our holidays in the UK there will be a choice of menu
for dinner, and a full English breakfast will be served. On Continental tours dinner is
more likely to take the form of a buffet or a set menu, and breakfast will be a hot or
cold continental breakfast.
Coaches & Seat Allocation – You will normally travel on one of our 48-seater
coaches, with on-board toilet, reclining seats and climate control. We reserve the right,
however, to substitute a vehicle supplied by another operator or by Roadmark Travel.
Whilst we will endeavour to use a coach of the same standard, substitute vehicles may
not always have the same facilities as our own coaches. The number of your seat(s) on
the coach will be advised at the time of booking, and this seat is allocated to you for the
duration of the holiday. Our seats are numbered from the front of the coach, with seats
1a,1b, 1c, 1d being in the front row, 2a, 2b, 2c and 2d in the second row etc. Seats Ra,
Rb, Rc and Rd are in the back row of the coach. The seat numbers on substitute vehicles
may be different.
Thank you to everyone who sent us letters and photographs following a
holday with us in 2011. We are sorry that we only have space to show you a
few of the many great pictures we received – here is a small selection…
We would like to say a huge ‘Thank You’ for the wonderful
week we enjoyed last week in The Lakes. From the moment
we were picked up in our taxi to the moment we returned home
in the same taxi we thoroughly enjoyed every moment. Our
coach driver, David, was absolutely brilliant, always
professional and good-humoured. Your choice of Ian Jones as
our guide on the trip to Carlisle & Hadrian’s Wall was
excellent. He was so knowledgeable, as was to be expected,
but he also had a great sense of humour. All the trips were
most enjoyable. As first timers, not only on a Roadmark
holiday but also to The Lakes, we were most impressed.
The Burnside Hotel was beautifully appointed and the food
was superb. We cannot praise the staff at the hotel highly
enough for their friendliness and excellent service. There
were a number of our fellow travellers who were known to each
other as they all travel regularly with you, some doing several
holidays this year. I think it is a testament to the quality of
your service and choice of venues. Once again, thank you and
we hope to travel with you again.
