FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PAUL TAYLOR DANCE COMPANY PRESENTS WORLD PREMIERE OF
“DE SUEÑOS” AT AMERICAN DANCE FESTIVAL, JULY 12-14
ACTS TO FOLLOW, JULY 14, FOLLOWED BY
ADF FACULTY CONCERT, JULY 15
A world premiere by Paul Taylor commands attention. “De Sueños,” Taylor’s newest dance, will
receive its fi rst performance during the Paul Taylor Dance Company’s engagement at the American Dance
Festival, July 12–14. Two Taylor classics, “Esplanade” and “Arden Court,” share the program.
Described as surreal and dreamlike, the ADF commissioned “De Sueños” is fi lled with imagery
suggesting Mexican culture and folklore such as the festive Day of the Dead and the Yaqui Deer Dance,
symbolizing the struggle between good and evil. Perhaps expressing Taylor’s own attitude about the
“meaning” of his dances, the choreographer quotes Jung on dreams in the program note: “So diffi cult is it to
understand a dream that for a long time I have made it a rule when someone tells me a dream and asks for
my opinion, to say fi rst of all to myself: ‘I have no idea what this dream means’.” The music, by a series of
contemporary Mexican composers, is performed by the Kronos Quartet from its recording, “Nuevo.” “De
Sueños” marks Taylor’s 16th work to receive its world premiere at the American Dance Festival.
Declared an instant classic at its premiere in 1981, “Arden Court” moves with the lyrical sweep of its William
Boyce score. The joy-ridden, all-male dance is electrifying in its energy and riveting in its witty surprises.
“Esplanade,” also an instant hit at its 1975 world premiere, is set to music by Bach. The dance is well known
for its radical use of pedestrian movement—runs, skips, hops, falls––that Taylor transforms into acts of
breathtaking virtuosity. Performances take place at 8pm in Page Auditorium. Tickets are $26-$41. A post-
performance discussion follows the July 13 show.
Acts to Follow (July 14): The three-part series, designed to showcase North Carolina dance
companies and choreographers, concludes on July 14 at 8pm in Baldwin Auditorium with a performance of
10 dances. The works are by Autumn Mist Belk, Carson Efi rd, Even Exchange Dance Theater, Courtney
Greer, Julie Mulvihill, Open Air Dance, Jess Shell, Christina Tsoules Soriano, Laura Thomasson and Thread
Dance Theater. Following the show, which is free and open to the public, audience members are invited to an
onstage dance party.
