A GLIMPSE OF FJELLNORWAY
FjellNorway has the most national parks, the highest mountain
peaks and the largest interconnected trail network in Norway. Get
a sense of the wilderness on a musk ox safari at Dovrefjell. Feel the
blood coursing through your veins like the rapidly flowing water
while white water rafting down the river Sjoa, one of the world’s
best rafting rivers. A visit to an open farm will give you peace of
mind and a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
POPULAR HIKES
Leirungsdalen at Knutshøe Photo: Terje Rakke
UNDISTURBED WILDERNESS
Norway – an impressive country of natural beauty.
Traditionally, Norwegians possess a deep attachment to the country and a penchant for spending time
outdoors, as the extensive network of trails and mountain huts clearly show. FjellNorway offers hiking in
some of Europe’s last remaining areas of undisturbed wilderness. The Norwegian Trekking Association, DNT,
offers accommodation in more than 320 cabins in FjellNorway.
Galdhøpiggen 2,469 metres
Galdhøpiggen is the highest mountain in Jotunheimen and
Northern-Europe, and one of the most visited peaks in
Norway. Choose the marked T-route from the Spiterstulen
tourist lodge (an 8-10 hour hike) or join a guided tour from
the Juvasshytta tourist lodge across the Styggebreen glacier.
Daily tours during the summer season.
Besseggen in Jotunheimen
The steep passages and fantastic view of Jotunheimen makes
Besseggen one of Norway’s most popular hikes, with more
than 40.000 visitors every summer you feel you are “on top
of the world” when you’re standing several hundred metres
above the green Gjendevatnet lake on one side and the deep
blue Bessvatnet lake on the other. The hike takes approx.
7 hours (without breaks).
Rondane
This magnificent mountain area is divided into three
prominent mountain groups, all with peaks over 2,000 metres
At 2,178 metres, Rondeslottet is the highest of them all. The
Rondvatnet lake cuts like a deep trench in between the wild
mountains.
Guided glacier hikes
From gentle, simple hikes to extreme hikes with climbing
and abseiling – expect amazing experiences on snow and ice.
Explore the ice towers, crevasses and tunnels inside the blue
ice with expert guides, equipped with harnesses, crampons
and ice axes. Svellnosbreen near the Spiterstulen lodge is an
excellent glacier for exploring the blue ice. This is where you’ll
find Eventyrisen (the adventure ice) with perhaps Jotunheimen’s
most spectacular glacier. Another exciting
destination is the Smørstabbreen glacier at Sognefjellet,
which is surrounded by no less than nine mountains over
2,000 metres.
– a stunning sight in the distance.
For inexperienced hikers wishing to experience
the high mountains,FjellNoway is the ideal place
to start. Follow well-marked routes to memorable
days in the mountains.
THE PILGRIM’S ROUTE
The Pilgrim’s Route in Norway, also known as
St. Olav’s way, is a hiking route based on the tradition
of going on pilgrimages. The route is linked by
nature and cultural heritage with religious links
to the Middle Ages, and memories associated with
‘Olavstradisjonen’ – a pilgrimage to the Nidaros
Cathedral in Trondheim to visit the shrine of the
sainted King Olav. The route stretches from Oslo
to Trondheim, passing through FjellNorge.
A hike in FjellNorway will give you a feeling
of harmony and balance.
EXPERIENCE THE JOY
OF FISHING
Lower your shoulders, listen to the
silence and enjoy being at one with
nature.
FjellNorway offers great fishing opportunities in
both rivers and lakes. The Gudbransdalslågen river
is a good location for trout fishing, and the lakes in
this area are known for exciting pike fishing. The
tributaries along the river will give you countless
variations as do the many lakes and rivers in the
Valdres region.
In Mjøsa, the Einavatnet lake and at Randsfjorden,
you can try catching the big pike, fat Mjøsa trout,
perch or how about some inland crayfish? The river
Tisleia in Valdres is perfect for fly fishing. Lessons
and guided tours are available throughout the
summer.
what better way to round off the trip than with
a feast prepared from the fresh fish you have
caught?
The variation of fish species, combined with
stunning scenery and a priceless quietude, makes
FjellNorway unique for fishing enthusiasts.
OUR HERITAGE
- OUR HISTORY
Art and culture are important in
FjellNorway. Few places offer such
a well-preserved cultural landscape.
At the Maihaugen open-air museum in Lillehammer
you will find buildings that are over 200 years old
from the entire Gudbrandsdalen area This is one of
the most important areas in the region for experiencing
the cultural heritage of FjellNorway. In the
heart of Lillehammer, you will find Lillehammer
Kunstmuseum (art museum), an elegant and
modern building and one of Norway’s most
significant art museums.
North of Lillehammer is one of the most popular
amusement parks in Norway, Hunderfossen
Familiepark – The Norwegian Troll Park – which
is based on Norwegian fairytales.
“Mjøsa’s white swan”, the paddle steamer
Skibladner from 1856, is the world’s oldest steamboat.
The venerable boat sails the waters of Lake
Mjøsa in the summer.
The Valdres Folkemuseum in Fagernes is one of
the largest open-air museums in Norway. wander
amongst the old houses from the 1700s and
experience traditional farm life with grazing
animals. you can also visit Norway’s largest
exhibition of national costumes (“bunad”).
TRADITION
AND INNOVATION
when you visit somewhere new,
the buildings often tell you a lot about the
area. And FjellNorway is no exception.
On Tverrfjellet in Dovre, stands Tverrfjellhytta –
the Norwegian wild Reindeer Centre Pavilion
– a unique, robust building that carries on the
building traditions of the past. The building
recently won the prestigious world Building of the
year Award, in the ‘visitors centre’ category.
Interesting architecture is also found in Lillehammer
Kunstmuseum (art museum), an elegant,
modernist building in the heart of the town.
Buildings that really leave marks on the cultural
landscape are churches. There are nine stave
churches in FjellNorway, all of which were built
in the 12th and 13th centuries. The churches are
beautifully decorated and most are open for guided
tours in the summer season.
FjellNorway
– beautiful, lasting impressions.
FOOD IS A PART
OF WHO WE ARE
- and one of the keys to a successful trip.
FjellNorway’s culinary art is based on old traditions
and we would like to offer you food made from old
recipes. Taste the wild game from the mountains,
fish from clean rivers and lakes, fresh pastries from
the local bakery or cheese from the mountain dairy.
Norsk Rakfiskfestival (Norwegian Rakfisk Festival)
is the biggest food festival in FjellNorway. ‘Rakfisk’
is a traditional eastern Norwegian dish made from
salted trout or char which has been fermented for
two to three months. Every year, 25.000 visitors
come to enjoy this distinctive dish, and more than
40 tons of rakfisk is sold during the festival. will
you be there?
TOWN AND COUNTRY
FjellNorway consists of several town
centres, large and small, each with its
own charm.
The Olympic town Lillehammer is situated right in
the heart of FjellNorway, close to the mountains
and Lake Mjøsa. Lillehammer is best known for its
pleasant pedestrian street, the Maihaugen
open-air museum and its large Olympic venues.
Gjøvik offers qualities from the urban town centre
to the beautiful and vital rural communities.
Surrounding it all are rolling hills, green forests
and the shiny mirror of Lake Mjøsa.
Fagernes is region centre of Valdres with restaurants,
art galleries and folk museum, and the host
of many large and small festivals throughout the
year.
FjellNorge’s vibrant rural centres are situated in
close proximity to the Jotunheimen, Reinheimen
and Breheimen National Parks. The mountain areas
and rural communities offer untouched nature,
fresh air and good, traditional food.
The many centres in FjellNorway allow
you to feel the pulse of a region where
the outdoor pursuits otherwise play a
role in relaxation and recreation.
RECOMMENDED TRIP 3: Oslo - Åndalsnes
RECOMMENDED TRIP 4: Oslo - via Dovrefjell til Trondeim
Via Lillehammer - Gudbrandsdalen - Rondane - Dombås
Follow the E6 from Oslo towards
Hamar. At Hamar, we recommend
a stop to see one of the world’s
largest indoor ice rinks. It is an architectural
building depicting a Viking
ship, hence its name Vikingskipet.
Domkirkeodden is also worth a visit.
Here lie the ruins of Hamar’s ancient
cathedral built in 1152/53. The ruins
are encased in glass.
From Hamar, the trip continues along
the E6 to Lillehammer, Olympic town
in 1994. Make time for a stroll along
the town’s pleasant pedestrian street.
Lillehammer Kunstmuseum, one of
Norway’s leading art museums, is to
be found in an elegant, modern building
in the heart of Lillehammer. For
breathtaking views of the city, climb
the ski jumping facility Lysgårdsbakkene.
And don’t forget to visit the
open-air museum, Maihaugen, Norway’s
largest museum outside Oslo.
From Lillehammer, you continue
northwards on the E6. The area
around Hafjell and Hunderfossen is a
mecca for families with children, with
two amusement parks, children’s
farm and downhill cycling. Continue
through Gudbrandsdalen and visit
Ringebu stave church. The venerable,
old, vibrant farms Sygard Grytting
and Rudi Gard, are venues for cultural
events in Gudbrandsdalen.
a fantastic mountainous landscape
for hiking, cycling or simply beholding
the majestic mountain peaks.
At the northernmost point of Gudbrandsdalen
you come to Dombås,
to head west to Åndalsnes and the
fjords or north over Dovrefjell
Norwegians are
“born with skis on their feet”.
The countryside is made for trips
along snowy white winter roads
between the old wooden buildings,
knowing that a crackling fire
awaits you
in the cabin at the end of the day.
winter Norway offers
the opportunity for adventure,
with fresh snow and the promise
of a well-deserved break
on the mountain top.
winter is synonymous with FjellNorge.
