LETTER FROM THE BOARD
Dear Caring Friends,
PEOPLE
HELPING PEOPLE
HELPING PEOPLE
BRIDGE as defined in Webster’s dictionary is
‘a structure erected over a depression or an obstacle carrying
a roadway for passengers.’ Thanks to you, our
caring friends, Care Center serves as a bridge to many in
our community. This “care” bridge connects people who
find themselves in a difficult circumstance with folks
able to provide a ‘helping hand’ across the bridge to a
better situation. People moving from dependency to independence,
families moving from homelessness to transitional
housing to their own residence, youth moving
from ‘at risk’ to high school graduate and people moving
from hopelessness to a place with a brighter outlook for
tomorrow.
The obstacles that this ‘care’ bridge spans in-
clude spiritual emptiness, poverty, illiteracy, drugs, isolation and/or prejudice. These barriers can
overwhelm a person or family preventing any progress toward desired goals. With the help of
many caring friends, Care Center works hard to form that bridge of opportunity. How? By being
the common resource for those that need help and those that have the means and desire to give
help. Through our programs there are ways to provide funds, goods, and services to our neighbors
in need.
Read and enjoy our 2011 annual report. In it you will find glimpses into the programs that
make Care Center a sturdy bridge of opportunity and a look at the many wonderful people who
make our mission of ‘people helping people helping people’ possible.
MISSION STATEMENT
Lake Wales Care Center is a faith based
community service organization which
demonstrates Christ’s love by building
bridges between people in need and
people with a desire to serve.

After Hours event hosted by Care Center.
6th ANNUAL EMPTY BOWLS
In an effort to raise awareness of hunger in the world and in our town, Care Center invited
the community to participate in a national program entitled EMPTY BOWLS.
“Empty Bowls” is a program to fight hunger, and is personalized by artists on a community
level. This program was designed to heighten awareness of hunger in the world and
in our own towns. Each community’s events are self-developed and independent.
Many celebrities from the community were invited to paint a bowl. These bowls,
painted by clergy, business owners, teachers, city officials and, of course, artists, were
sold at auction during The Lake Wales Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours
event in October.
The $8,000 raised from this event is used to further the hunger relief programs offered
through Care Center including: The Backpack Program-for identified students at local
schools, Meals On Wheels-hot meals delivered week days to the elderly and shut-in,
‘A bridge for families in crisis’...tangible
resources such as food, clothing, furniture,
household items and financial assistance
for those in short-term crisis was
provided for more than 5,600 families in
2011 by Lake Wales Care Center.
On an annual basis Care Center will provide
nearly $415,000 of short-term cash
assistance utilizing and coordinating
funding from Salvation Army, Federal
Emergency Food and Shelter Program,
State Agriculture and Labor Program,
Progress Energy Good Neighbor Fund
and resources from our own budget
through community donations.
In addition to interviewing each family to
determine their immediate needs, case-
Meals on Wheels provides well-balanced noon meals each weekday. Meals are prepared fresh daily by Lake Wales
Medical Center and delivered to the recipients’ homes by volunteers. Each meal consists of a hot entrée, vegetables, a
salad, dessert and a drink. Through this program, area elderly and shut-ins receive more than a good healthy meal. Dedicated
volunteers offer a warm smile as they greet each recipient. This provides an opportunity to make sure the person is
well or has any concerns.
Recipients for meals come to be in the program for a variety of different reasons. Some may have just been released
from the hospital and need help for a few weeks as they get back on their feet. Others may
have recently lost a loved one and need meals as they grieve. A few are disabled and by having
food brought to them hot and prepared relieves them from the struggle of preparing it
themselves. Many are
homebound and MOW’s
enables them to have a
nourishing meal and visitor
each day.
The cost per meal is
$4.00. A sliding scale fee
is available for those who
need assistance. If you or
someone in your family
could benefit from the
program or would like to
volunteer please contact
What a wonderful holiday season!!! Volunteers from Lake Wales families,
clubs, schools, organizations and churches came with joyful hearts
and helping hands to pack food boxes, wrap gifts, and make deliveries to
area families.
Food and gift donations were a tremendous blessing. Special thanks to
all who provided “Caring Trees” for the gift drive and food barrels for
the food collection program. Upwards of 5,000 items were donated during
the Christmas toy and gift drive and twenty-one tons of food was
collected during the Thanksgiving food drive. Wow!!! Such a caring
community!!!
A mother of an adopted family called the adopting group to share,
“Thank you for the gifts and food. Your family has really blessed my
family. I am so grateful for all that you have done. May God bless you.”
From a parent who adopted another family…. “We were so thankful that
we were able to adopt a family. It was a blessing for me to see how my
Stories from Transitional Housing
♦ A mother and her 4 children left an abusive situation and sought
help through Care Center. Placed in a Transitional Housing unit the
mother completed her GED program and was able to find adequate
Outcome: The Mother and children were able to move into
STAY-AT-HOME-WORK CAMP - 350 Campers - 55 Projects Completed
I Count the theme for the 26th Annual
Work Camp. The scripture verse is
found in Luke 14: 25-35.
Camp provides an opportunity for youth
to complete home repairs for local homeowners
who are either physically or
financially not able to do the repairs
themselves. Campers work as teams not
only in completing the task given each
day, but in working toward the Camp Goals.
Games and activities focus on the central
theme and developing the special gifts and
talent of each person.
THANKSLIVING CAMP - 101 Participants
During the Thanksgiving school break,
101 campers and counselors attended
Care Center’s ‘ThanksLiving Camp’. The
emphasis for this camp focuses on relational
service in the community.
pointed to the Free Clinic
and said that she had helped to
paint it during work camp. I was as
proud as she was knowing she is
serving in the community.”
target specific music genres are held
on site once or twice a month.
