Ist annual Raffle a Huge Success
An overflow crowd filled the Michael Walsh Gymnasium for the 1st
Annual Notre Dame Raffle. An estimated crowd of over 1,000 enjoyed a great
afternoon of fun, excitement, and camaraderie. It was a sellout with all 2,000
available tickets sold. Door prizes, food, and beverages, and 50/50 raffles were
all part of the fun leading up to the drawings that gave out $80,000 in prizes!
Old friends and alumni mixed with new friends and community supporters.
Jim Roddy, ND Class of ‘61, represented Notre Dame’s first graduating class
and Florence Hagan, 102 years young, who put three generations of children,
grandchildren, and great grandchildren through Catholic education were among
the alumni and supporters on hand for this wonderful event. Thanks to all who
helped make this event a tremendous success!
Philadelphia Mission Trip
This past April break Notre Dame students
went on a mission trip to Philadelphia. While
most young people are thinking about vacation
and sleeping in, these students had other ideas.
The day started at 6 am with mass and prayer to
center ourselves and begin our day in service to
the poor. Notre Dame students saw the face of
Christ among children, the homeless, and others
whom we served.
We were hosted by the Vincentians at the St. Vincent de Paul Youth and Young
Adult Center in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. During the day, our group
was split into teams that went to different service sites such as:
• Dawn’s Place - A women’s shelter
• Mercy Adult Day Program - Working with mentally challenged adults
• Inn-Dwelling Project - Rehabbing homes for the working poor
• Thrift Store - working in the thrift store
• St. John’s Hospice Soup Kitchen - Helping to serve the noon day meal to homeless men
• St. Catherine’s Infirmary -Visiting with the elderly and sick Vincentian Priests
• St. Martin De Porres After- School Program and /or Beacon Program
Throughout the week, our students were able to grow spiritually and have an impact
on the world around them. The students did an awesome job at taking ownership for
each site they were assigned to. We hope to continue serving others in the future.
Barry Donalty, ND ’64 Honored
The Honorable Barry M. Donalty, ND Class of ‘64 was presented
with the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award on June 8th, during
the 51st Notre Dame Commencement Ceremony. Judge Donalty’s
career has been one of service to his community, county, and state.
By not only choosing to serve in this capacity, but to excel in
every office and position he has held is a lasting testament to
his integrity and character. As an alumnus, Judge Donalty took
with him all of the knowledge and values that he learned at
Notrre Dame to truly distinguish himself in his chosen field.
Judge Donalty was also the Commencement Speaker for this year’s graduation,
where he inspired the Class of 2012 on this very special evening.
Notre Dame Jr./Sr. High School
Notre Dame Alumni Ordained
Dan Horan, a 2001 graduate of Notre Dame Jr./Sr. High School, was ordained on
May 19, 2012 at St. Camillus Church, Silver Spring, Maryland. Dan attended Our
Lady of Lourdes Elementary School prior to attending Notre Dame. Thanks to a
suggestion from his high school guidance counselor, Mrs.
Kirkpatrick, Dan attended St. Bonaventure University and
graduated in 2005. Having always had a deep love for the
church, St. Bonaventure introduced him to the Franciscan
Community and he knew that being a priest is what he wanted
for himself. Dan said his first mass at St. Francis Church in
Triangle, Virginia, where he had served as a Deacon. On May
27th, he returned to his home parish of Our Lady of Lourdes
where he celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving. Catholic
Education was a major influence on Dan and his three brothers
all of who have attended Our Lady of Lourdes and Notre Dame. Notre Dame provided
an intimate nurturing environment where he could explore his faith while receiving an
excellent education. Dan has currently earned two Master’s Degrees and will be going to
Boston College in the Fall to pursue his PhD.
Anthony J. Brindisi ’96- NYS Assemblyman
Anthony, J. Brindisi, 1996 graduate of Notre Dame Jr./Sr.
High School, currently represents the 116th Assembly
District. The district is situated in the heart of New York
State centered in the Mohawk Valley and includes the cities
of Utica and Rome as well as the towns of Floyd, Marcy,
and Whitestown. He was elected to the State Assembly in a
special election on September 13, 2011.
Born and raised in Utica, Brindisi studied history at Siena
College before receiving his Juris Doctor Degree from Albany Law School in 2004.
Brindisi was admitted to the New York State Bar and Federal District Bar for the
Northern District of New York in 2004, and is a partner in the Utica based firm
Brindisi, Murad, Brindisi, Pearlman, & Pertz, LLP. In addition to his professional
duties, Brindisi has held board positions with the Children’s Museum of History,
and the Greater Utica Commuity Food Bank.
He wanted his children to grow up with grandparents nearby, just as he did, so he
returned home to Utica after graduation where he lives with his wife, Erica, an
adjunct professor at Mohawk Valley Community College(MVCC), and their two
children.
As a former Utica School Board member and the father of two young children,
Brindisi is committed to making sure kids have all the tools they need to succeed.
This includes a safe environment to grow up in and our fair share of state
education funding. Through all his accomplishments, Brindisi looks back at Notre
Dame as his foundation.
“I will always have fond memories of the time that I spent at Notre Dame. The
connections and friendships I made there have lasted to this day. While Notre
Dame is a smaller school, it has wonderful teachers and excellent academic and
Catholic education. At Notre Dame I found many friends in both my classmates
and teachers. I will always remember the great times we had on various field trips
and school activities. I learned so many wonderful values at Notre Dame, especially
the value of learning about our Catholic faith. I was so comfortable in that kind of a
setting that I continued my Catholic education at Siena College.
Annual Appeal Supports Notre Dame’s Academic
and Extracurricular Programs
Notre Dame’s Annual Appeal is a must in providing our students the best academic
and extracurricular programs. Last years appeal was instrumental in assisting
Notre Dame in maintaining a strong program as well as continuing to grow our
Science and Technology Departments. More importantly, this appeal provides
tuition assistance for students and their families. While the Annual Appeal doesn’t
officially kick off until September 2012, there is an envelope enclosed so that we
can get a head start on making this our best fundraising year ever!
All contributions are fully tax deductible.
