TODAY TODAY Thursday, May 19, 2005 3 LLUMC celebrates better speech and hearing month Loma Linda University Medical Center’s department of speech therapy recognizes May as better speech and hearing month. “Communication for Life” is the theme for this year’s better hearing and speech month. More than 42 million Americans of all ages have communication disorders. According to research, 10 percent of children entering first grade have moderate to severe speech disorders, including stuttering, and 1 million adults suffer from aphasia as a result of stroke. Hearing loss is the most common congenital disorder in newborns, and 28 million Americans suffer from hearing loss. Awareness and early intervention are critical for prevention and treatment of these problems. Vietnames refugees remember… Continued from page 1 MD, who coordinated the group’s arrival to Loma Linda. “Coming to Loma Linda was a salvation for us,” says Pastor Giao. “As many as 300,000 Vietnamese refugees died at sea while trying to escape or died in ‘re-education’ camps instituted by the government after the fall of the South Vietnamese regime.” Several months after his arrival to the United States, Pastor Giao received a letter from a friend back in Vietnam. It read: “If you were here your grave would be covered with green grass by now.” “Saigon Adventist Hospital existed in Vietnam only with the direct help of Loma Linda University and Loma Linda University Medical Center,” Pastor Watts notes. Pastor Watts, who served as chair of the board of directors for Saigon Adventist Hospital during the early 1970s, noted that Saigon Adventist Hospital signed an agreement with the United States government with the understanding that we would provide health care not only to the Vietnamese who needed it, but also to the foreign community still living in Saigon. “The Adventist Church agreed to step in, provided that physicians and other medical professionals be brought in from Loma Linda as needed,” Pastor Watts noted. By April, 1975, the fall of Saigon was imminent. Saigon Adventist Hospital workers believed they were at high risk of being targeted by the North Vietnamese because the hospital had a contract with the United States government. “We were branded with the name CIA,” said Nghiep Le, then an administrator at Saigon Adventist Hospital who now lives in San Diego. “We had to leave.” At a luncheon following the church service, the Vietnamese— many who returned to Loma Linda from as far as Florida, Hawaii, and Alaska—expressed their heartfelt appreciation to Pastor Watts and Loma Linda. ≤entennial ≠oments PRESENTED BY THE HERITAGE ROOM, DEL E. WEBB MEMORIAL LIBRARY Eleanor Baxter Burden—She also served Eleanor Baxter Burden, like so many Seventhday Adventist women of her time, probably is best known to us for her working association with her husband— John Allen Burden—as well as for being a faithful church worker. Beyond the blurring that time brings, one can discern Ella, as she was called, as a woman of purpose, a partner in pioneering. Born in Philadelphia on November 13, 1865, she came to California with her parents in 1877, and here she and her mother joined the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Starting in 1883, she attended Healdsburg College, and completed a degree there. She and John Burden met at college. They were married April 12, 1888, and she joined him in his work at St. Helena Sanitarium (now St. Helena Hospital and Health Center at Deer Park, California). There they were united in service— he as the manager and she the bookkeeper—for nearly 10 years. In 1899, John and Ella were invited to begin sanitarium work in Australia. There they assisted in founding the Sydney Sanitarium (now Sydney Adventist Hospital), again working as manager and bookkeeper respectively. They returned to California in 1904 to continue their efforts in founding other Seventh-day Adventist sanitariums, first at Glendale and then at Loma Linda in 1905. At the Loma Linda Sanitarium, Ella was equal to her new position as matron. During the first few months after the purchase of the Loma Linda property, her task was to convert the furnishings and equipment of a health resort to those that would be suitable for a medical institution. In the words of Keld J. Reynolds, “like her husband, [she] seemed to be omnipresent and omniscient. And she could pinch-hit. When her husband bought a printing press, she learned to set type and run the press.” Thus she became the printer of the first issues of the 16-page Medical Evangelist —the little periodical that became familiar throughout the United States and elsewhere as the representative of the College of Medical Evangelists for more than 50 years. Once more, in 1916, Ella and John Burden teamed up in the managing of a new medical institution—Paradise Valley Sanitarium near San Diego (now Paradise Valley Hospital). Again, he was the manager and she was the matron, a position in which she continued until her illness and death in 1933. The Burdens lived simply and frugally. They poured their gifts and creative energies into Church endeavors throughout their entire lifetimes and saw their reward as being heavenly rather than earthly. One of Ella’s favorite poems, found in her Bible, has a verse that sums up her philosophy of life: “Fading away like the stars of the morning, Losing their light in the glorious sun; So let me steal away, gently and lovingly, Only remembered by what I have done.” LLUMC observes ‘National Day of Prayer’ On Thursday, May 5, at 11:30 a.m., in the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital lobby, the Medical Center and Children’s Hospital chaplains led out in observing the National Day of Prayer. The theme “God Shed His Grace on Thee” set the tone for this year’s event. Special requests and praises were shared before small groups formed circles with a chaplain who prayed.
