4 Thursday, May 19, 2005 TODAY Medical Center, Children’s Hospital celebrate volunteers Loma Linda University Adventist Health Sciences Center celebrated the volunteers that donate their time and efforts to the Medical Center and Children’s Hospital at the annual recognition banquet on April 21. In keeping with the Medical Center’s centennial theme of “Fulfilling the Vision,” the banquet featured the history of volunteers at the institution. The Wong Kerlee International Conference Center filled with volunteers and their families to recognize the dedicated hours put in during 2004. In total, volunteers contributed 190,907 hours (the equivalent of 91 full-time employees) to the Medical Center and Children’s Hospital. Denise Winters, director of volunteer services, provided the official welcome to start the program and thanked the volunteers for their generous contributions of time and energy. She introduced the master of ceremonies for the evening, W. Augustus Cheatham, MSW, vice president of public affairs. “We’re very proud of all that you do,” Mr. Cheatham said in thanks to the volunteers. In a letter written to the volunteers printed in the evening’s program bulletin, Ruthita Fike, MA, CEO and administrator of the Medical Center, applauded their dedicated efforts. “Your partnership with us in caring for those in need is such a blessing,” wrote Ms. Fike. “Your acts of kindness and service have a direct impact on the lives of patients, families, and employees.” More than 700 volunteers actively participated throughout the year in such programs as the Kids Care Fair, Children’s Day, Health Fair Expo, the Cheerful Encounter program, and the Bring A Smile and Cards 4 Kidz Dr. Hadley is married to the former Donna Olsen, whom he met while interning on the unit where she worked as a cardiac surgery intensive care nurse. They were married the following year. They have three sons—the oldest of whom, as a member of the class of 2005, is a fourth-generation alumnus of Loma Linda University School of Medicine. Speaking to graduating School of Dentistry dental hygiene and dental students will be Charles Bertolami, DDS, chair of the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery and dean of the School of Dentistry at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Bertolami completed the doctor of dental surgery degree program summa cum laude at Ohio State University in 1974. Five years later he was awarded the DMedSc in oral biology from Harvard University. After graduating from Harvard, he completed a residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he served as chief resident from 1979 to 1980. Between 1980 and 1983, Dr. Bertolami taught at the University of Connecticut. In 1983 he returned to Harvard, where he taught until 1989. Later in 1989 he relocated to the west coast after being appointed chair of the department of oral and maxillofacial Surgery at University of California, Los Angeles. He was named dean of the University of California at San Francisco School of Dentistry in 1995. Dr. Bertolami’s academic and administrative excellence has been noted and honored by both his alma maters and other institutions. He was named distinguished alumnus by Ohio State University College of Dentistry in 1996 and by Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 2000. Phillips visiting professor at Columbia University in 2002, and in 2003 he was the recipient of the Paul Goldhaber Award of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. He has also been honored as the Vincent A. Barr visiting professor at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Bertolami’s professional expertise has been utilized broadly and extensively. He co-chaired the National Institutes of Health workshop on biomimetics, tissue engineering, and biomaterials (1998); chaired the American Association of Dental Schools committee on future faculty (1998 and 1999); and co-chaired a blue ribbon panel on research training and career development in 2000. He served as president of the American Association for Dental Research (2002 and 2003) and as a member of the Harvard University overseers’ visiting committee for the faculty of medicine and dental medicine. He currently serves on numerous advisory and editorial boards, including the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Dr. Bertolami still retains strong research interests in—and has published many book chapters and original articles related to—orofacial tissue repair, the biochemistry of hyaluronic acid, and the use of sodium hyaluronate in the treatment of mandibular disorders. Dr. Bertolami is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and a fellow of the American College of Dentists and of the International College of Dentists. A number of awards will be presented during the ceremonies. These will be reported in the next issue of TODAY. SPH offers LLUAHSC employees scholarships in health administration Loma Linda employees who are ready to finish their bachelor’s degrees now have more options available to them. The School of Public Health is offering not only a new BSPH degree in health care administration, but also providing a matching scholarship to Loma Linda University Adventist Health Sciences Center employees who gain admission to the program. Employees with tuition benefits can use their eight hours of annual classes to take two free classes each year toward a bachelor of science in public health in health care administration. If they then pay for one more class that year, the School of Public Health will give a scholarship for the fourth class. Employees can check with the employee benefits office if they are unsure whether they qualify for the tuition benefit. This offer is ideal for LLU- AHSC employees who already hold associate’s degrees, said assistant professor Brad Jamison, PhD, director of the BSPH program in health administration. “A bachelor’s degree is foundational in today’s job market,” Dr. Jamison says. “Furthering your education helps to reinvent yourself and opens new possibilities.” The class schedule is geared toward working people, with all health administration core classes scheduled in the evening. Interested employees can start the program any quarter, but the School of Public Health would like to see as many people as possible begin this summer with HADM 409, principles of health care administration, taught by Stewart Albertson, JD, LLM. The class will meet Wednesday evenings June 20 through September 1 from 6:10 to 10:00 p.m. While a bachelor’s degree in health administration is most obviously suited toward careers in health care, the degree incorporates a core of business classes that make it applicable across a wide range of fields. Admission requires a cumulative grade-point average in previous college courses of 2.5. The BSPH in health administration is new this year. Once a Thank you! student has completed the BSPH in health administration, it can make for a smooth transition into a master’s program within the School of Public Health.
