Introduction
How do we foster the capability and emotional
wellbeing of children and adolescents in the
21st century? As parents, teachers and mental
health professionals, access to practical,
science-based information is critical to success.
Adam Cox, PhD, is a leading advocate for
fostering the cognitive abilities and emotional
wellbeing of youth. He provides a revolutionary
perspective in how we understand and foster
child development, and as some of you know, he
was here at St John’s for the International Boys'
Schools Coalition (IBSC) Conference. Dr Cox has
been commissioned by the IBSC to conduct a
school-based research study on "Locating
Significance in the Lives of Boys." This
worldwide study includes site visits and
interviews with students in the US, Canada,
Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Africa and
some of our boys at the Prep were part of this
process.
I found Dr Cox’s address very interesting as
often I feel we get caught up in looking at the
institution (St John’s) and we forget about the
individual and how the individual boy
contributes uniquely towards the school.
A few of the interesting facts that came out of
his research are:
• The key aspects of an ideal boy are
emergence, achievement, motivation,
congruity and belonging.
• When giving boys tasks, these must be
novel, and they like doing them with their
peers. Boys also like to be recognized.
• Boys must be given purposeful work that
must be challenging – boys will settle and
be comfortable with whatever level of
challenge they are given. By giving boys
purposeful work, it provides information
of who they are and increases energy.
• Boys are disengaged from beauty (other than with the opposite sex of course!)
• Real time achievement is key.
• Boys need to know if things are urgent and necessary and whether they will get
recognition.
• Girls want to help people; boys want to be heroes.
• Boys are sublimated by relentless competition.
• The two things in life which are most significant for boys, particularly in Africa,
are technology and nature.
• Boys would be happy to let social networking go if everybody else did.
I look forward to listening to Dr Cox in London in July once he has completed his
research and I am sure I will be able to report back with some more interesting
information about boys.
I wish you all the very best for the last few weeks of term – I cannot believe we are
The Weekly Whatzup!
The Weekly Whatzup is a central “venue” where every single activity for the Prep is
recorded for the week. This communication is posted onto Communicator every Friday
for the week ahead. In addition, copies of The Weekly Whatzup are posted all around
the Prep throughout the week. It has been fantastic to see the number of boys who are
now reading this around the school.
As a parent, you will be able to have a look at The Weekly Whatzup one week in
advance, in order to plan the following week accordingly, as you know exactly where
your son is involved, on a daily basis. Occasionally, there may be a sudden change to
an event, and so it is immediately updated and re-posted onto Communicator. In due
course, Communicator will be available on your cellphones.
The Weekly Whatzup is a very important piece of communication that we feel is very
valuable to you as a parent. If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact
me.
New Prep School Book Bags
For some time the staff in the Prep have been getting increasingly worried about the
size and weight of the school bags that the boys are carrying from class to class. Boys
have been getting bigger and bigger bags to carry more and more.
Unfortunately the bags with shoulder straps are not being worn over both shoulders, as
per the design, and are carrying up to 20 kilograms on one shoulder. Notwithstanding
the damage they are doing to their bodies, we feel that boys should not be carrying
heavy bags all over the school, and should rather be practising good organisational
skills, by only carrying the books they need for the lessons ahead.
All boys in the school have a locker in their locker room. Boys will be required to visit
their locker before school to drop off their big school and sports bags, together with the
books for the lessons after break.
At break time they will then revisit their locker and swop books, dropping off the books
they have used, and pick up the books for the lessons ahead. This will apply for all
boys, except the Upper 1s, who will continue to use their cloth book bag.
During the school morning the only bags the boys will be allowed to have with them will
be the new St John’s Prep Book Bag, and their pencil bags. This will have many
benefits: the reduction of clutter in the corridors and classrooms, helping to preserve
the boys’ shoulders, reduction in theft out of bags and loss of whole bags, and also
helping to develop the planning and organisational skills of the boys.
The new bags are on sale in the school shop from Tuesday 22 March, and will be
phased in over the Trinity Term. By the beginning of the Michaelmas Term we do expect
all boys from Lower II – Upper III to be using these bags.
Afrikaans in the Prep School
After a close examination of the way in which Afrikaans is taught in the Prep School
over the past few months, we have worked together to develop a programme that
includes a far greater oral component, balanced with the requisite language structures
and creative writing.
We are all aware of the fact that English-speaking families are no longer as comfortable
speaking Afrikaans as they once were. We no longer hear the language spoken in public
buildings, nor do we listen to it regularly on radio and TV, with so many other options
available. This lack of incidental language learning has impacted on the learning of
Afrikaans as an additional language.
As an Afrikaans department, we are anxious to find ways in which to address this. We
have several new strategies which we hope to implement over the course of this year,
for example:
• We will be introducing Taal Tuesdays, where on designated Tuesdays, the whole
school will be encouraged to speak Afrikaans wherever possible, such as using
morning greetings, birthday songs, assembly announcements (within reason!),
weather reports, asking to go out of class, etc. We hope that this will also be
extended to homes in the afternoons and evenings. The first Taal Tuesday will be
on the 8 th March. We will also be doing this in Zulu in the near future – so be
warned!
• Several new classroom strategies are being implemented, including the use of music
to develop an understanding of the rhythm of the language. The use of class
readers is also being encouraged with the support of a reading card system. A
selection of Afrikaans magazines has also been ordered for the library.
We ask parents to try out some different strategies as well to assist with the
development of vocabulary and the rhythm of the language, for example:
• Use the week’s vocabulary in real situations like identifying clothing,
furniture, food, and so on.
• Try putting words on flashcards and sticking them on the relevant objects to
encourage the learning of vocabulary.
• Set your GPS on Afrikaans when travelling in the car – this is a wonderful way
to learn direction words.
• Tune in to an Afrikaans radio station on your way to school in the mornings.
Page 6 St John’s Preparatory School
• Give instructions and use terms of endearment in Afrikaans where possible.
• Allow boys to watch Sewende Laan on SABC 2 at 6:30.
• Listen to them read aloud daily, even if they know the comprehension passage
off by heart.
• Encourage boys to learn the rules of the language. Even boys who are exposed
to Afrikaans regularly need to learn these formal structures.
If you find that you don’t understand the language – get your son to teach you! This is a
perfect way for him to consolidate concepts and to ask questions about the work he
may not yet understand.
We will continue to encourage our boys to work at improving their vocabulary and language
skills. During the course of the year, we are hoping to make recordings of the
texts and vocabulary that boys are using in the classroom, to assist with pronunciation
and understanding at home.
Please contact me if you’d like any further information or if you have further
suggestions for improving the development of this special language.
Kind regards
children in my family.
The eldest is Jhadi.
She has so much fun
with me! The second
eldest is Amber (living
in Cape Town for a
year). When I was 4
and under she used
to make jelly with me
and last, but not
least, me. I am the
youngest out of all of
the family.
My face has sharp ears
because I hear very faint
sounds. I have a small
mouth because I don’t eat
a lot. I have biggish eyes
because I can see far.
My age rings show that
my age is 9, my sister
Jhadi is turning 24. My
sister Amber is turning 23
and my dad, I think, is
turning 44.
My favourite subject is art as you can see. Where I think I get it from, is my mom called
Deborah and my sister called Amber. My hobby is cycling as you can see by the wheels
on the Totem Pole. I like cycling because it improves your balance. Where I live is in
Orchards on Orange Road. I have my own 2 year old Yorkie, she is so cute she always
makes my day. I am so glad to be a St John’s boy. My life is so good this year!
the teachers. Their
names are Mr Johnson
and Mr Poco. We
are working on tin
shakers.
My hobby is cricket. I really like it, especially batting
and bowling. I don’t like fielding because it is really
boring. I made the A team this year, here are my
scores: 38, 3, 0, 6, I have had a great season!
My face is very important to
me as it holds my eyes, ears,
nose and mouth. I wear
glasses as I have what is
called ‘astigmatism’. I also
have a very keen sense of
smell. I have lost eight teeth.
I have nine age rings. I am
turning ten in September on
the fourteenth, three days
after Nine Eleven. According
Jordan Van Der Walt, (UIIIF) is challenging all boys and the St John’s community
to take part in his “Just One Bag” initiative. Everyday thousands of children go to
school hungry; by donating a bag of mealie meal many children will be supported.
All boys are encouraged to put their name on a bag of mealie meal and hand it in
to Mrs Taylor’s office. This initiative will run from Monday the 21 st of February
until Friday the 1 st of April. Let’s show them what we can do!

Dads and Lads Golf Tour – Mpumalanga
Over the half-term break, 24 th – 27 th February, eight boys: J Lees, J Montgomery,
B Vermuelen, C Roets, J Niehaus, E Peters, R Bentley, B Dunbar and their dads
travelled to Mpumalanga to play in St John’s first golf tour. We played three beautiful
courses over three days in one of South Africa’s most beautiful regions.
The first day involved a very early wake up and drive through to Skukuza Golf course in
the middle of the Kruger National Park. Skukuza is one of the only golf courses where
you have to sign an indemnity against being attacked by wild animals, as there are no
fences and animals are free to roam around the course. Unfortunately it was a scorching
hot day and there was little to be seen - including birdies and eagles... all due to
the heat of course. The highlight of the day was the 18 th hole, a par 3 over a dam, hitting
your tee shot over a herd of hippos, an incredible experience for all.
The next morning we headed to Sabi River Sun Golf Course, a beautiful 18-hole course,
which was undoubtedly the highlight of the tour for many. There was some good golf
played all round and we all enjoyed the incredible hospitality. That evening we headed
into the Park for a night drive: it may have been the tired eyes or noise levels, but
unfortunately we didn’t see much. But it was an incredible day filled with lots of
laughter and good memories.
Our last course was Kruger Park Lodge Golf Course, the course is situated in the resort
we were staying at. It is a short 9-hole course with magnificent views and an enjoyable
layout.
There was some excellent golf played and the following boys need to be congratulated
for excellent rounds: J Lees, J Montgomery and C Roets.
That evening we had our final dinner and prize-giving at a beautiful restaurant in
Hazyview and celebrated all the achievements and reflected on many of the memories.
The tour was a great success, with many new friends being made, great memories
created and a very special time for all sons’ and their fathers.
Thank you to all who helped organize the tour, in particular, to Mrs L Roets.
Well done to Colin Kinghorn and Justin Standish-White for their participation in the
Inter-schools’ Quiz at St Katharine’s last month. The quiz is a termly event attended by
boys and girls from a number of different local schools. The teams are made up of four
pupils, one from each of the various schools taking part. It is really a wonderful
opportunity for the Grade 7 pupils to mix and have fun too. This term the quiz theme
was the Oscars and each team was given the name of a nominated film. Our boys were
able to answer many of the questions and seemed to enjoy their interaction with other
team members.
iLife Awards
Last year a number of Lower IIIs (UIIIs this year) completed projects for the iLife
awards. These were all IT-based projects using Apple’s Photo Book or iMovie. The Lower
III F class, read books and then produced wonderful book trailers about the books they
had read and submitted them to the iLife competition, run by Apple. Other groups
chose the very topical subject of rhino poaching for their presentations.
A group of boys attended the awards last Wednesday and although we were not placed,
it was fascinating to see the winning projects and the way that subjects like the
Football World Cup, the A-Z of South Africa and alcoholism were tackled and some
exceptional movies were made.
The Diocese of Johannesburg has agreed that all the
churches in the diocese should use the same material
and run a common Lent Course this year. We will be
using the “Life of Jesus” Course.
“The Life of Jesus course is a book club with a
difference. Over six sessions you will watch a full scale
documentary on the life of one of history’s most
intriguing figures. You will also have the chance to read
one of the ancient biographies, the Gospel according to
Luke, on which the documentary is partly based.
The purpose of the course is straightforward: to provide
the inquiring, the sceptical and believers alike with an
opportunity to explore Jesus’ life and to consider its significance for today. Whatever
your current perspective, we are confident you will be informed and entertained.”
The Parish will be running the Lent Course on Wednesday evenings from 19h00 to
about 20h30 in the College Divinity Room (north-western corner of David Quad)
starting on 16 March.
Please do join us for these 6 evenings.
St John’s Preparatory School
Art club and extra classes
From the beginning of next term, Mr Poco is starting an Art Club (for LIII and UIII boys) and extra art classes for junior
boys. Senior boys are encouraged to join the Art Club on Tuesdays from 14h00 -15h00 or Thursdays from 15h00-
16h00. Juniors may arrange extra art lessons with Mr Poco at alternative times and on alternative days.
We hope to see the senior boys joining the Art Club to create various exciting art works with mediums they do not
normally use in class, such as print making, photography, oil painting and many more. This will be a fantastic opportunity
for any boy who wishes to develop his art skills.
For further information e-mail Bruno Poco on poco@stjohnscollege.co.za
I’VE LEARNED…
…that when you’re in love, it shows.
…that just one person saying to me,
“You’ve made my day!” makes my day.
…that having a child fall asleep in your arms
is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world.
…that being kind is more important than being right.
…that simple walks with my father around the block on summer
nights when I was a child did wonders for me as an adult.
…that we should be glad God doesn’t give us everything we ask for.
Page 26
…that it’s those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular.
…that the Lord didn’t do it all in one day. What makes me think I can?
…that when you plan to get even with someone,
you are only letting that person continue to hurt you.
…that everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.
…that when you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.
…that a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.
…that when your newly born grandchild holds your
little finger in his little fist, that you’re hooked for life.
…that it is best to give advice in only two circumstances;
when it is requested and when it is a life threatening situation.
…that the less time I have to work with, the more things I get done.
