Examiner in Mental Physiology in the University of London ; Lecturer on Psychological
Medicine at the Charing Cross Hospital Medical School ; co-Editor of " The Journal
of Mental Science."
ASSISTED BY ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-SEVEN CONTRIBUTORS.
This Work, tho first of the kiml which has becu attempted, aims at providing
information, more or less systematic, in regard to the Delitiition, Etymology and
Synonyms of tho Terms used in Medical Psychology, with the Symptoms,
Pathology and Treatment of the recognized Forms of Mental Disorder, together
with an abstract of the Law of Lunacy in Great Britain and Ireland.
A large number of short Definitions of words have been introduced.
Articles of greater length treat of tho most important subjects which fall under
tho head of Psychological Medicine.
Tho Philosophy of Mind is expounded in a separate Introductory Article, and
is not lost sight of in tho Shorter Dtilnitious and other Articles ; but it is to bo
borne in mind that the fundamental aim of tho Dictionary is directed to Morbid
Psychology, and not to Mental Science in its ordinary restricted sense.
An account is given of tho methods of Psycho-Physical Research which have
been introduced in recent times into Psychological Laboratories established in
various Universities in Europe and in tho United States ; also of tho results which
have been reached in regard to the Reaction-time of Mental Phenomena.
Tho History of the Insane, and the reforms undertaken to ameliorate their
condition in varions countries of the world, have been fully given.
An important feature of the Dictionary is the introduction of Bibliographical
References in connection with the most important subjects treated of in the
Articles ; and, in addition to these, a copious Bibliography of English works
bearing upon Psychological Medicine will be found at tho close of tho Work.
Illustrations of the various types of Insanity arc given, and in addition,
Engravings intended to facilitato the understanding of other subjects described
in the Dictionary.
" It is not too much to say that it is the best and most favourably known to
the medical and legal professions, by both of whom it is quoted as the highest
authority. It has acquired this enviable standing from the high reputation of its
authors, from the correctness of the views and opinions expressed, and from
its fulness. More than any work by English authors it deals with the subject of
insanity in all its relations."—Amer. Jour», of Insanity.
