The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lowell serves as a vital 

resource and safe haven for families in our community 

in need of a positive environment for their children 

after school and throughout the summer. We are very 

pleased to report that 2011 was another fantastic 

year at the Club. Thanks to your support, our members 

are participating in structured academic, athletic, 

recreational and cultural programs led by positive adult 

role models. 

A Safe, Positive Environment – Afterschool program 

hours were expanded until 8:00 pm Monday – Friday. 

In 2011, up to 250 children attended our afterschool 

program and more than 300 boys and girls attended our 

summer program each day. Many improvements were 

made to our facility both inside and out, including 

much-needed repairs to our roof. 

Academic Success – Nearly 170 members completed 

book reports as part of our summer reading program. 

More than 160 boys and girls participated in our Power 

Hour Homework Help program during the school year. 

Healthy Lifestyles – More than 165 boys and girls made 

a commitment to fi tness and achieved the President’s 

Active Lifestyle Award and 103 boys and girls graduated 

from our eight-week Healthy Habits program, improving 

their knowledge of nutrition and increasing their daily 

physical activity. 

Good Character & Citizenship – Boys and Girls enrolled 

in our Torch Club and Keystone Club leadership programs 

performed more than 500 hours of volunteer service, 

and several teens assumed leadership roles at local, 

regional and national forums. 

In the pages that follow, you will meet two 

Club members whose participation in our 

programs is helping them become productive, 

responsible and caring citizens. You will also 

learn how so many volunteers, alumni and staff 

make a positive difference in the lives of these 

youth. 

We thank each one of you who supported 

the Boys & Girls Club in 2011. Your support 

is literally transforming the lives of these 

children and their families. It is only through 

the generosity of our countless donors, 

sponsors and volunteers that we are able to 

offer our afterschool and summer programs at 

such affordable fees to ensure that no one will 

be excluded: $26 for the entire school year and 

$10 per week in the summer. 

We look forward to an even more successful 

year in 2012. Working together, we will 

continue to offer high-quality programming 

that is yielding life-changing results for 

thousands of youth. Working together, we will 

ensure a brighter future for our youth and our 

community.

The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lowell - Yesterday and Today 

In 1900, a group of caring adults and community leaders opened a Boys 

Club on Dutton Street in Lowell, “To help street boys, many of whom would 

spend their evenings on the streets and in bad company, if not for the 

Club.” In 1906, the Lowell Boys Club was one of the original 53 Boys Clubs 

that affi liated to become the forerunner of the modern Boys & Girls Clubs 

of America movement. 

In 1973, a brand new Clubhouse named after George A. Demoulas 

was opened at 657 Middlesex Street. In 1995, girls were accepted as 

members and the Lowell Boys Club was renamed the Boys & Girls Club of 

Greater Lowell. Although there have been many changes over the years, 

the mission to inspire and enable young people from disadvantaged 

circumstances to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and 

caring citizens has always remained the same.

The Club in 2011… 

The Club’s primary focus is to help members achieve success in the 

following impact areas: Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Good 

Character & Citizenship. 

• 1,654 boys and girls ages 7-18 enrolled as registered members 

• 211 members each day attended our afterschool program 

• 294 members each day attended our summer program 

• $26 annual fee for our afterschool program 

• $10 weekly fee for our summer program 

• $500 is the actual cost to the Club per member 

• 79% of our members qualifi ed for free lunch in their public schools

Making a Commitment 

Paul Diamantopoulos 

“It is great to see a young person you 

coached at some point, approach you and 

tell you how well things are going. You 

realize you may have had some positive 

impact on that particular child.” 

Paul Diamantopoulos has been part of the Boys & Girls 

Club of Greater Lowell’s Wrestling Program since he 

attended the Club as a child. He reconnected with the 

program four years ago to volunteer as an assistant 

coach, when his son joined the program run by Gary 

Perrin. Last year, Paul was asked to take on the role of 

head coach and oversee the program. 

The Wrestling Program at the Club aims to teach kids that 

hard work and focus will help them reach their goals. The 

program emphasizes the importance of respect; respecting 

their coaches, environment, competition, health and 

well-being. Paul believes that the opportunity of being 

part of a team sport instills valuable lessons and life skills 

including confi dence and perseverance. 

Some of our Wrestling Program alumni have moved on 

to have successful high school and college careers in 

wrestling, winning state and regional championships. 

Dedicated volunteer coaches like Paul serve as positive 

role models for the kids. “They see the commitment we 

make to them as coaches and hopefully they will then 

make the same commitment to their teammates.” 

Paul hopes that the program will continue to grow so 

that as many Club members as possible can participate, 

and take with them the core values they learned while 

being part of the Wrestling Program. He thanks Mike 

Witts, Kevin Dillon, Mike Dillon, Jim Dillon, Ricky Thyne, 

Pat Coughlin, Todd Bazemore, Kevin Broderick, and Frank 

McCarthy Sr. and Jr. for their help in making the program 

successful. 

Thank you to Paul and all of our program volunteers who 

help make the Club a safe and positive place for our 

youth! 



Serving Club 

and Community 

Tony Lobao 

“When I walk through the doors, 

it’s kind of like home for me.” 

Every day after school, 15-year-old Tony Lobao 

walks from his house in Lowell’s Back Central 

neighborhood to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater 

Lowell. The kids at the Club call him “Mr. Popular,” 

and once he is inside the building, he is greeted 

by dozens of longtime friends, schoolmates, and 

Club staff that he’s known for years.

Tony is a member of the Keystone Club, a program 

that fosters civic engagement through community 

service and leadership opportunities. He enjoys 

working with Club members and staff to plan 

special events and community service projects. 

In February of 2011, Tony and his fellow Keystone 

members led a group of volunteers at a two-day 

park cleanup at Lowell General Hospital. In the 

spring, he participated in Comcast Cares Day with 

staff and volunteers from Comcast to repaint the 

Teen Conference Room. 

Tony is now the Vice-President of Keystone. 

In November of 2011, Tony and his fellow 

“Keystoners” attended the annual regional 

Keystone Club Conference held in Nashua, 

New Hampshire. At the conference, members 

of Keystone chapters throughout New England 

congregated to share ideas and resources. 

Tony credits his experience with Keystone and 

the Boys & Girls Club with having made him 

a stronger individual. “I’m defi nitely more 

confi dent,” he said. “I wouldn’t be the person 

I am today without the Club.”

Kenemassa 

Jordan 

“Meeting new friends at 

the Club has helped me 

be more confi dent in my 

decisions and I feel safe 

at the Club” 

At age seven, Kenemassa Jordan 

stepped through the Club doors for 

the fi rst time. Few of her friends 

from school were attending then, 

and she really wasn’t sure what to 

expect – only that it was a safe 

place for her to go after school 

and there were programs she could 

participate in. Now, at age twelve, 

Kenemassa has been involved 

with more than nine programs on 

topics including homework help, 

Photoshop and animation, Internet 

safety and writing. Her two younger 

brothers are now attending the Club 

with her. 

The staff members at the Club 

each have special qualities that 

Kenemassa admires. Some are really 

funny, some teach her about new 

technology, some help her keep 

her grades up and some teach her 

the importance and characteristics 

of being a good leader. All of 

these great role models have 

infl uenced her personal belief in 

the importance of the Club. “The 

Club keeps me responsible. Before 

coming to the Club I used to get 

in trouble a lot, and now I don’t. I 

am getting better grades in school 

because the staff help me.” 

Kenemassa’s favorite program is 

Torch Club. With other members 

ages 11-13, she helps run various 

community service projects, 

represents the Club at Lowell 

community events, and strives to 

take on leadership roles both at the 

Club, and in her everyday life. She 

enjoys Torch Club because “we get 

to help people around you and have 

fun at the same time.” Kenemassa 

looks forward to continuing her 

participation in more activities and 

programs at the Club in the future.

Example 

Michelle Taylor 

“I see a lot of myself 

in these kids. The Club 

offers great opportunities 

for kids of all ages, races, 

and differences to learn 

and grow.” 

Michelle Taylor grew up just down 

the street and started coming to 

the Club with her brother on a daily 

basis when she was nine years old. 

“At home I didn’t have a yard, a 

basketball hoop, or anything to do. 

I looked forward to coming to the 

Club because there was always a 

burst of energy inside. The programs 

kept me organized and busy. The 

Club made me feel like there were 

endless possibilities and the staff 

made me want to succeed.” 

Staff members were especially 

important to Michelle when she 

was 17 years old and her mother 

died. She began to realize that staff 

mentors modeled a different way of 

life and opened her eyes 

to new opportunities. “They had 

college degrees. They were happy 

and comfortable. They had a safe 

place to go at night. I knew one 

day I wanted that.” 

Michelle went on to college, 

graduating with a bachelor’s 

degree in nursing from Salem State 

University while spending her 

summers working with Lowell youth 

at the Club’s summer program. 

Michelle now works as a Registered 

Nurse at D’Youville Senior Care in 

Lowell and makes a point of visiting 

the Club whenever she can to serve 

as a positive role model for today’s 

Club kids. 


Elliott Vargas 

“The best thing about 

working at the Club is 

knowing you’re making a 

difference in a kids life, 

even if it’s just making 

them feel like they 

belong… Watching them 

grow and succeed makes 

me feel like I belong 

here.” 

Elliott Vargas started his journey 

with the Club when he was only 

13 years old. As a member, he 

was involved with the leadership 

group Keystone Club; the Money 

Matters program, teaching youth 

smart ways to manage and save 

their money; and Junior NBA and 

NFL Flag football as a coach and 

referee for games. Today, at age 

22, Elliott is a Gym Assistant and 

leads various programs for our 

Club members, including topics 

such as nutrition, fi tness, and teen 

development. 

Elliott was positively affected 

by the Club and our mission. 

He attributes the Club staff and 

programs in helping him stay on 

the right path in order to succeed 

and make positive choices. Most 

importantly, he realizes that the 

members that he sees every day, 

look up to him to be a positive 

role model. Growing up in Lowell, 

Elliott believes he can relate to 

the environment that many of our 

members are growing up in now. 

As a teen member, while attending 

Greater Lowell Technical High 

School, he began to develop 

relationships with peers at the 

Club, who are now still some 

of his closest friends. He built 

meaningful relationships with 

staff, including the Club’s Athletic 

Director, Billy Gilmore, who he 

considers his mentor for both 

professional and personal advice. 

Looking forward, Elliott would 

like to continue his education in 

youth development at Middlesex 

Community College.


Giving Back 

Brian Chapman 

“Back when I was a kid 

and now, the Club creates 

a sense of belonging and 

community, a place where 

everything is positive.” 

As an elementary school student, 

Brian Chapman and his older brother 

walked to the original Club on 

Dutton Street just about every day. 

He remembers fun games and sports, 

hot dog and movie nights, and fi eld 

trips to parks, museums and the 

Boston Garden. “As a kid, the city 

of Lowell seemed so huge. The Club 

not only taught us that we were part 

of a community, but also provided 

us with lots of opportunities to 

see things outside of Lowell that 

we would not have had otherwise.” 

Brian recalls how Boys & Girls Club 

staff members like William “Bill” 

Lapointe built positive relationships 

with all the kids and were always 

there to help you get through 

anything that was happening 

outside the Club. “Bill really gave his 

heart and soul to the Club.” 

In 2001, Brian established his 

business, Mill City Environmental, in 

Lowell and decided to do what he 

could to give back to the community 

that helped him so much as a child. 

“I chose to get involved with the 

Boys & Girls Club because of my 

experience growing up in Lowell. 

The Club is a unique place where 

kids can be kids. They learn how 

to get along with each other and 

the positive reinforcement they get 

every day from their peers and Club 

staff is very important.”

Holiday Auction 

Over 350 guests gathered at the Lowell 

Memorial Auditorium in December and 

bid high to support the Club’s Afterschool 

Program. Close to $170,000 was raised 

including $24,850 designated to fund the 

Nutritional Meal Program and activities 

that help Club members develop healthy 

lifestyles.

The Club is very fortunate to have
