IDF WORLD DAIRY SUMMIT 2009 

Exchange of information and opinion at international level is more important than 

ever during this time of rapidly changing world markets for agricultural commodities 

and market globalization, with dramatic repercussions on supply and demand in the 

dairy industry. 

The increasing importance of issues related to environment, energy sources and 

technological innovation with regard to milk supply and dairy processing will be 

key aspects addressed at the IDF World Dairy Summit 2009. Senior economists and 

government representatives will gather in Berlin to participate in various conferences 

and other parts of the Summit programme, providing ample opportunity for economic, 

political and scientific exchange on current issues. 

Berlin has become the capital of a united Germany. In the past 20 years that have 

followed the German Reunification and the opening of Central Europe’s borders, 

Berlin has become one of the most dynamic economic and cultural centers in the 

heart of Europe.

The International Dairy Federation is delighted to welcome you to Berlin 

for the 2009 IDF World Dairy Summit 

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, 

This is the leading dairy event of the year and once again it is expected to be a major 

gathering in Europe, after Mexico in 2008 and before Auckland in 2010. 

Over the years, the IDF World Dairy Summit has significantly evolved and has 

become a “must” for all dairy experts, leaders, stakeholders, … of the world’s dairy 

community. 

The core values of IDF will continue to prevail: scientific excellence, industry applicability, 

strategic networking in many new areas and topics related to the current 

opportunities and challenges facing the global dairy sector. Beside a full programme 

of technical and scientific conferences, the IDF Forum of Dairy Leaders has become a 

key element of the annual IDF World Dairy Summit, gathering views of top industry 

representatives, politicians, authorities, economists and other stakeholders of the 

dairy sector.

DAIRYING IN GERMANY 

Germany is the 6 th largest milk producer world wide 

Approximately 29 million tons of predominately cow milk are 

produced in Germany annually, thus making Germany - with its 

19 % contribution - the largest producer of milk in the European 

Union. In an international ranking by milk production, Germany 

is placed 6th following India, the United States, China, Pakistan 

and Russia. 

In the year 2007, 96% of the total milk produced in Germany 

was delivered to dairy factories and processed there. This 

proportion of delivered milk is considerably above the international 

average. The German dairy factories process the second 

largest amount of milk in the world after those in the United 

States. 

In 2007, approximately 100,000 agricultural farms kept a total 

of 4.1 million dairy cows. The average number of cows per 

farm was 40, yet the spectrum of farm sizes varied widely. The 

average per-cow milk production in 2007 was just below the 

7,000 kilograms mark at 6,944 kilograms. 

Milk processing in Germany is highly developed. About half 

of the total milk delivered is turned into cheese and a third 

into fresh dairy products. The proportion of milk processed into 

cheese and other fresh dairy products has been increasing for 

years. Germany is one of the most important exporters of milk 

products, in particular of cheese, milk powder, condensed milk, 

but also of butter and liquid milk. 

Milk products play an important role in the nutrition of the 

German population. Level of milk consumption in Germany ranks 

among the highest when compared internationally. In 2007, 

each German citizen consumed on average 22.2 kilograms of 

cheese and 6.4 kilograms of butter.

modern and productive cheese plants 

in Germany. Production facilities were 

expanded in 2002, and nearly 110 Million 

Euro were invested in modern and nearly 

fully automatic means of processing. 

Milk, a product of nature, is now 

processed in a new, fully automated

On the second evening of the Summit, 

farmers from all over the world will be 

meeting at the Maritim Hotel Berlin 

(conference venue) for the Farmer’s 

Gala Dinner 

The Gala Dinner is the social highlight of 

the IDF World Dairy Summit 2009. Enjoy 

a celebratory Gala Dinner at one of the 

most important historic sites in the heart 

of the city: Hangar 2 at Tempelhof Airport 

- with a unique view of the once largest 

building in the world, and it’s no longer 

active runways. The first Zeppelin landed 

here, and Berlin Tempelhof Airport was 

the first commercial airport in the world. 

During the Berlin Blockade 1948/49,

Quarter, the Berlin Cathedral, Museum 

Island, the New Government Quarter, 

Bellevue Castle, and Tiergarten park.

Where was the Wall? 

You will visit the former Checkpoint 

Charlie, which mirrors the tragedy of the 

divided city. There are elements of the 

Wall left to see as well as Wall memorials; 

some are reminders of failed attempts 

to escape to the West, and others are 

reminders of the impassibility of the Wall. 

Visit a street that was divided by the Wall 

and one of the most famous places to try 

to escape.

New Architecture & Reichstag 

Visit the Reichstag – the building with 

the plenary hall that was set on fire 

in 1933, and reopened as seat of the 

German Parliament, the Bundestag, 

in 1999. The restoration by British star 

architect, Sir Norman Foster, included the 

addition of a pedestrian glass dome. This 

tour covers highlights of contemporary 

architecture, including Potsdamer Platz. 

Renowned architects such as Renzo Piano 

and Helmut Jahn have created a unique 

new city center. An additional highlight: 

Daniel Libeskind’s Jewish Museum.

in before visiting the Reichstag. We ask

Tour 5 

Potsdam – The Royal Tour 

The way to Potsdam leads us across 

Glienicke Bridge, famous for the 

exchange of spies. Potsdam reflects the 

splendor of Prussian history throughout 

various historical eras. You will visit a 

palace within Sanssouci’s park grounds 

and admire the famous gardens. Cecilienhof 

Palace was built in the style of an 

English country manor for Crown Prince 

Wilhelm and his family. In July 1945, the 

Potsdam Conference, at which Stalin, 

Churchill and Truman were present, took 

place, the post-war future of Germany 

was discussed there.

Each year, the largest folk’s festival in

exploring Bavaria’s most beautiful region, 

visiting Neuschwanstein, dream castle of

Hgi Hotel Reservation worldwide is responsible for handling 

the entire booking process. 

Bookings will be accepted only via the registration form, filled out completely, 

including valid credit card details as a guarantee. If you have not 

received confirmation of booking within 5 business days, please contact 

HGI by telephone: +49-221-82008-20. If the hotel desired is already fully 

booked, HGI will inform you prior to booking you into another hotel. 

The prices indicated are per room per night, including VAT. Any increase 

in VAT will be borne by the customer. The customer is required to pay all 

costs incurred for accommodation, food and drink, as well as extras directly 

in the hotel prior to departure. In addition, the customer is required 

to meet any costs to the hotel in case of cancellation and non-attendance

The fees include

Single day registration: Access to the conference booked, access to 

the exhibition and poster areas, conference bag with the current program, 

lunch including beverages for the day of attendance. 

15 th ZMP Dairy Forum: Participants of the 15 th ZMP Dairy Forum pay 

a fee of 150.00 euros exclusively to participate in the Forum. This fee 

includes the Farmer’s Dinner. Registration to participate exclusively in 

the 15 th ZMP Dairy Forum is available according to the above-mentioned 

terms until September 21, 2009. 

Students: Access to the conferences, access to the exhibition and poster 

areas, conference bag with the current program, lunch including beverages 

on all days of the WDS. 

Accompanying persons: Access to the exhibition and poster areas, 

lunch including beverages on all days of the WDS; Welcome Reception 

and Gala Dinner. 

Additional events: Full registration includes participation in all evening 

events. Participants with single day registration may book social 

events individually: Registration for Social Events and Tours (see also: 

www.wds2009.com). 

Tickets for the Technical Tours and the day trips in Berlin can be booked 

there individually as well. 

Registration – details 

1. After registering online, you will receive an invoice from the organizer 

with a list of the events you have booked. 

2. You will receive a confirmation of payment when we have received it. 

3. Participation in Berlin: Please bring both your invoice And your 

confirmation of payment when you register in Berlin; they entitle you 

to get the tickets you have booked as well as the WDS materials. 

If you did not receive your confirmation of payment before traveling to 

Berlin, please register at the Summit Office in Berlin with the invoice and 

a proof of payment of the events you have booked. The Summit Office will 

be open from September 17 th to 24 th , 2009, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

Your name tag serves as your ticket to the entire World Dairy Summit, or 

for the single days you have booked. 

You will receive individual vouchers for participating in the evening events, 

the Technical Tours and the social events. Please present the vouchers 

upon entering the events. 

Speakers / Chairs 

Speakers and chairs receive free entry on the day of their presentations 

(value of a single day registration without social events in the category 

booked). This reduction in price will be taken into account in your invoice. 

Please indicate on your registration form on which day and in which conference 

you will be presenting a paper or chairing a session. 

Students 

If you would like to register at the reduced rate for students, please register 

and, within 2 weeks, also fax a copy of your personal identification 

document and your student ID card to the following fax number:

of the conference fee together with the confirmation of registration. 

Please present your student ID card as well as the other required documents 

(see above) when you register in Berlin. 

Please note that participation in the social events, Technical Tours and 

City Tours is not included in the reduced conference fee, even with full 

registration.

On-Site Registration 

If you would like to register on-site at the World Dairy Summit, please pay 

the conference fee in cash or by credit card in the Summit Office. 

English and German are the conference languages. Simultaneous translation 

will be provided for the lectures. 

The Summit Office will be open from September 17 th to 24 th , 2009, from 

8 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

Terms of Payment 

Bank transfers are accepted in euros only. Any banking fees are payable by 

the participant. All prices are per person and include 19 % VAT. If the rate 

of VAT is increased, the prices will be adjusted accordingly. 

Terms of Cancellation 

Cancellations must be made in writing and must be received before September 

1, 2009. An administrative fee of 100.00 Euros will be charged 

for cancellations received before September 1, 2009. After September 1, 

2009, reimbursements are no longer possible. However, you can transfer 

your registration to another participant anytime before September 20, 

2009, provided you inform us before the World Dairy Summit begins.
