Chers amis du public,
6, le chiffre dont la symbolique est la clef, celui de l'ouverture.....
Celui de cette année..
Quand je pense au futur du New Year Music Festival in Gstaad j'ai toujours
Festival in Gstaad un événement unique, mon affection!
Notes
The Festival thanks the Fondation Fellini pour le cinéma, Sion for helping to make this evening possible.
Dans le cadre d'un partenariat
qui sera inauguré à Gstaad le 30
décembre 2011, le New Year
Music Festival in Gstaad et le
Venetian Centre for Baroque
Music souhaitent co-produire
plusieurs projets dans les années
à venir, créant un axe de
programmation commun visant
à présenter à Gstaad et à Venise
le fruit de recréations mises en
oeuvres avec de jeunes artistes.
En 2011 et 2012, deux projets
sont lancés,le premier avec le
jeune ensemble "Il Gene
Barocco" intitulé "La Soavita
Veneziana" et le deuxieme étant
la recréation d'un opéra pour
marionnettes, "Caligola delirante
de Pagiardi" avec un cast de
jeunes chanteurs doublés par les
Marionnettes de Mimmo
Cuticchio. Enfin, toujours en
2012 nous recevrons-dans le
cadre de ce partenariat les 35
étudiants du département de
musique ancienne de la Haute
Ecole de Musique de Genève qui
auront travaillé Gabrieli et
Monteverdi pour ensuite les
jouer à Venise.
In the first half of the seventeenth
century, Venice began a
new chapter in the history of art.
It invented the public opera
house and gave instrumental
music its pedigree. For more
than a hundred and fifty years,
La Serenissima transformed the
art of Euterpe. In taking the
names of the two composers
who inaugurated and concluded
that golden age, the Fondazione
Monteverdi Vivaldi aims to tell a
story that was written by many
creators, and is scattered with
masterpieces that are often
overshadowed by The Four
Seasons. A centre providing
resources and promoting the
dissemination of information
and knowledge, the Venetian
Centre for Baroque Music carries
out fundamental work in the
fields of research and interpretation.
Punctuating its editorial
activities, an international
festival is scheduled each year,
along with an academy for
young artists, with the aim of
reviving those unknown gems
which deserve to be well known
the world over.
multitalented genius, he is also a symbolic figure
of Polish - Swiss friendship.
For many years he lived in the French speaking
part of Switzerland where he not only composed
and gave concerts but also was engaged in charitable
work for war victims. For example,
Paderewski together with Henryk Sienkiewicz, the
Polish writer and Nobel Prize Winner in Literature,
set up the Swiss General Committee for Polish War
Victims' Relief in Vevey in 1915.
The music and memory of Ignacy Jan Paderewski
is still very well known and popular in Switzerland.
There is the Ignacy Jan Paderewski Museum
in Morges and the monument of Maestro
Paderewski in the centre of Vevey. I am very glad
that thanks to the cooperation with Princess
It was Polish pianist and composer,
Frederic Chopin who totally transformed
the art of playing piano in the
19th century. His beauty in playing, romanticism
and technical innovations
were recognized by Schumann who
famously remarked "Hats off gentlemen!
A genius!" While his own, short
life ended in Paris in 1849, before he
reached the age of 40 years, Chopin's
popularity and style of playing continue
to dominate piano music and
performance today. Virtually everything
he wrote remains on the concert
repertoire. Respected and admired by
musicians in his own times, the legacy
has been a constant one. A hundred
years after his death, Alfred Cortot
wrote a poem on Chopin's hands. The
leading musical lights in Chopin's own
life were Bach and Mozart. But he acknowledged
those around him too:
about Liszt he wrote "Liszt is playing
my études....I should like to steal from
him the way to play my own études."
What is remarkable is that all of this
legacy came from few public appearances
- perhaps 30. He played virtually
all of his concerts in private salons
and his music was only available in
written form - and very, very difficult
to play for anyone trying at home.
Until the recordings of the 20th century,
Chopin's legacy was in the hands
of the stage performers. He made his
way as a composer and teacher of society
ladies. A typical day of hour long
lessons started at 8am with a Pleyel
grand for the students and a small piano
for Chopin himself. He intended
to write a book on piano teaching but
died before he could develop his first,
short notes.

Piano Sonata in B minor
“Nostalgia Urbana - Astor Piazzolla" - Transcriptions for piano solo by Ilan Rogoff
Fin du concert 20h30
Notes on the music & composers by Ilan Rogoff :
Franz Liszt -
Piano Sonata in B Minor
Liszt chose to call this great work
a Sonata. We can attribute his decision
to the freedom Romantic
composers took in giving a title to
their works. This great work bears
no resemblance to the traditional,
or classical Sonata form. It could
be legitimately titled a "Fantasy"
or a pianistic Tone Poem, a term
Liszt brought into symphonic
music. This great work was Composed
in 1852/53 during his
Weimar period (1848-1859), a period
which saw Liszt at his most
creative and fertile stage as well
as personally happy - after giving
up on a brilliant concert career
(1847) and dedicating himself to
composition, championing
Wagner (who later married his
daughter Cosima) and to his beloved
Princess Carolyne Sayn-
Wittgenstein who he met in 1847
and who lived with him in
Weimar until 1859, when the princess
left for Rome - causing Liszt
to give up his post in Weimar and
follow her there, eventually becoming
an Abbé and hoping to
obtain the church's permission to
marry his beloved. The structure
of this work can be described as
that of a "non rigorous cycle", in
variation form - where the variants
are either rhythmic, harmonic
and/or melodic, with surprising
diversity, flexibility and mobility
of ideas and sounds.
The composition starts with an
eight bar introduction (in the
Greek Doric form) with a descending
scale, giving way to the schematic
exposition of the principal
theme in B minor. This theme, titled
"Energico" has two principal
elements, which are in constant
conflict and lead to the first of the
"Grandioso" sections in D major.
After a brief, peaceful and graceful
section, we return to the more
combative principal theme with
show of contrapuntal virtuosity. A
great fervour animates this section
in which all previous themes reappear,
including the beginning
descending scale and the initial
"Grandioso" section is reaffirmed.
A short and melodic Andante section
in F sharp major leads us back
to a remembrance of the opening,
which sounds like the conclusion
of the cycle. Instead, Liszt takes us
on a masterful, dramatic and contrapuntal
whirlwind tour-de-force
of a fugato, using the two elements
of the principal theme -
which brings us to the recapitulation
of all that has happened before.
The closing section, a more
peaceful variant of the opening
theme leads to the same Hungarian
descending scale which ends
with vast, ecstatic chords in the
Notes
Sigismond Thalberg
Born in Geneva on 8 January 1812,
Sigismond Thalberg was one of
the romantic pianists who "all decided
to be born at much the same
time" - Mendelssohn 1809, Chopin
1810, Liszt 1811 and Henselt 1814.
As Harold C. Schonberg wrote in
his 1963 treatise on "The Great Pianists."
By the 1830s the piano had
taken essentially its modern day
form and was the social instrument
in European homes of the
day. All new compositions - symphonies,
concertos - were quickly
written for piano and thus it became
the way that music spread
throughout Europe and to the cities
of the Americas. With so many
people able to play, they also
wanted to hear. Thalberg understood
the role of the concert performer
to put on a show. He developed
a technique, learned from
a harp player, to play music to
sound as if he was playing with
three hands. Essentially he
brought out the melody with both
thumbs and surrounded it with
arpeggios and was so named "Old
Arpeggio". A hard working musician
with a flawless technique he
played without any bodily movement
- in contrast to the flamboyant
and constantly moving Liszt.
Mendelssohn compared the two
musicians in an 1840 letter. For
him Thalberg was calculated and
polished. Liszt a performer whose
musical perceptions extended to
the very tips of his fingers. He
wrote that the two men, alone,
represented the highest class of pianists
of his day. Thalberg made
an astonishing career and retired
a rich man in 1863. He went to live
in Italy as a winegrower - without
a piano in the house.
uppermost register - culminating
in a last breath.
The two elements in the principal
theme were described by the
French interpreter Alfred Cortot in
this way: "One is Exclamative, ferocious,
desperate and resolved,
while the other is Sarcastic, deceptive
and demonic". These dualities
of which Cortot speaks are evident
in many of Liszt's works and
often attributed to his fascination
with the figures of Faust and
Mephistopheles. However, the
qualities Cortot attributes to the
two principal elements can be easily
amplified by most interpreters,
and in turn by listeners, experiencing
their own individual perceptions
and emotions aroused by
Liszt's masterpiece.
Astor Piazzolla
Nostalgia Urbana - Transcriptions
for piano solo by Ilan Rogoff
(from his CD)
The "breach" between Classical
and Folk Music is far less than we
are accustomed to believe, as
many composers draw inspiration
from the culture in which they are
nourished. Folk rhythms and
melodies form an integral part of
works by Schubert, Chopin, Liszt,
Dvorak, Debussy, Ravel, Sibelius,
Tchaikowsky, Mussorgsky,
Smetana, Mahler, Strauss and
Wagner among others. Twentieth
century composers followed the
same path: Stravinsky,
Shostakovitch, Copland,
Bernstein, De Falla, Albeniz,
Granados, Villa Lobos, Ginastera,
and of course, Astor Piazzolla. In
1924 Piazzolla's family moved
from Buenos Aires to New York
City, where they stayed until 1936.
At the age of nine, Astor Piazzolla
started playing the Bandoneon,
became familiar with American
Contemporary music, including
Jazz, listening to Cab Calloway
and Duke Ellington, as well as
meeting Carlos Gardel, who was
charmed by the young bandoneon
player and invited him to appear
in his last film. In 1937, back in
Buenos Aires, he played traditional
tango as bandoneon soloist
in Anibal Troilo's orchestra. In
1940 he composed a work for
Arthur Rubinstein who was in
Buenos Aires on a tour. Rubinstein
recognized Piazzolla's talent and
told him to take composition lessons
with Alberto Ginastera, with
whom he studied for eight years.
Between 1950 and 1953 his compositions
won prizes and awards,
including first prize in France,
entitling him to a scholarship to
study with Nadia Boulanger at the
conservatory of music in Paris.
The importance she had in his life,
is best illustrated by Piazzolla recounting
his arrival in Paris
in1954, with 50 kilos of scores and
saying to her: "I am a composer, I
would like you to analyze my
music. After she spent two weeks
looking at my scores, her comments
were: 'Interesting....... It is
a little Bartok, Stravinsky,
Hindemith, but not Piazzolla.
What does Piazzolla do?' Quite
ashamed, I told her that I play the
Bandoneon in a nightclub, on
which she asked me to play for
her. After listening to a few bars
she said: 'Mais voilà, that's it.....
Piazzolla! Not these 50 kilos of
music I analyzed.... This is the
music you should be working on!'
That was the day I began to believe
in Astor Piazzolla. I launched
myself into the world with that
music in hand, the music Nadia
Boulanger considered to be good."
The following year he recorded
fourteen of his compositions with
the strings of the Paris Opera orchestra,
Marital Solal at the piano
and himself playing the
Bandoneon. On his return to Buenos
Aires he formed two groups,
a strings and bandoneon orchestra
and his famed Buenos Aires
Octet. After two difficult years in
New York (1958-1960), he returned
to Buenos Aires to create
what became a fundamental
group in the trajectory of his music:
The Quinteto Nuevo Tango
(Bandoneon, piano, violin, electric
guitar and double bass), which
caused a fury among university
students and other segments of
the public, including vitriolic criticism
against his innovative approach.
In the 1960s, Argentina's
military government condemned
his work for being too avantgarde,
with critics calling him a
clown or paranoid. Paradoxically,
this proved to be beneficial as he
gained publicity and new audiences.
In 1972, after leaving his
homeland again, he started gaining
recognition in Italy. During
that period he increased his musical
group from a quintet to a sextet
by adding a second bandoneon
and replacing the violin with a
cello. This group was also increased
to an octet, and later to a
full symphony orchestra. More
than 300 tangos, Milongas and
songs, instrumental, chamber and
symphonic music, compositions
for the theatre and ballet, as well
as the scores for nearly 50 films,
give testimony to Piazzolla's creativity,
originality and genius. His
convictions are those of an innovative
composer who took his inspiration
from the depth of
Argentinean folk music, while rejecting
the traditional, conservative,
and often purely popular
approach. He revolutionised and
brought the Tango and Milonga to
their extreme esthetical limits,
thereby gaining its acceptance as
music for concert stage. As happens
all too frequently, it was during
the decade after his death that
great accolades and due recognition
were accorded to Piazzolla
with many recordings, some with
the world's best-known performers.
"Urban Nostalgia"
The academic nature of his early
compositions and printed versions
of some piano works often
result as unplayable, leading one
to suspect that they were meant
primarily as a base for extemporisation
by the performer.
Piazzolla claimed that he "never
interprets a work in the same
manner twice" and "We (the musicians)
get bored by always play-
ing the same music". Although he
claimed that "my music is 10%
pure Tango and 90% contemporary
classical music", his need to
constantly improvise, revise and
reorchestrate his works often prevented
the existence of a definitive
version,
Transcribing to piano solo works
composed for a group permitted
me to be faithful to harmonic content.
However, playing various
voices in the same register, while
easily distinguishable when
played by different instruments,
either becomes muddled on a piano,
or creates a sound world,
which is alien to Piazzola's music.
This obliged me to separate voices
into different registers. Melodic
lines presented a greater problem
in some works, due to the nature
of the piano. As opposed to the
human voice, stringed and wind
instruments, once a long note is
struck, maintaining, varying or
increasing volume or intensity is
not possible, which causes great
difficulty in maintaining the illusion
of "legato" and the resulting
melodic flow and continuity. Nevertheless,
once these difficulties
are met, I feel that the power of
Piazzolla's music, its originality
and beauty, overcomes these instrumental
obstacles and shines
through. My hope is that the transcriptions
and arrangements I
have humbly assembled, recorded
on CD and as a "playable" score,
will facilitate the enjoyment of the
essence of his music, while maintaining
the option of treating the
text with the same freedom
Piazzolla has claimed.
It struck me that although the
works chosen for the recording are
varied, there is a common denominator,
which I can only define
as "nostalgia". Piazzolla admits
to nostalgia being a motivating
force in his creativity, whether
remembering his father's tears
when listening to Tango music, or
for his homeland while working
abroad. An urban nostalgia associated
with humanity, rather than
with nature. Virile, passionate,
sensual, pensive, sad, bitter, or
loving are all terms which come
to mind while listening or studying
his music. Human and urban
elements, rather than music which
celebrates nature, yet without
making any use of typical or noisy
elements associated with city life.
The urban is made obvious even
in titles such as the four
"Estaciones Porteñas", referring to
the Four Seasons in Buenos Aires,
yet devoid of association with the
seasons in nature, or in "Los
Pajaros Perdidos" using blind and
lost birds as a metaphor for a lost
love. After all, urban - is nature
designed by man. Some of the
Thanks to The Embassy of the State of Israel for their contribution to the evening
works are inspired by very personal
events in Piazzolla's life.
Foremost is "Adios nonimo" composed
in Rome when Piazzolla
was notified of his father's death.
It is a homage and a personal requiem
to his beloved father. Likewise,
“Los Pajaros Perdidos”
(The lost birds) is a beautiful song
using the images of birds flying
blindly over the sea on a dark
night as an analogue to a lost love.
These compositions represent different
styles mastered by
Piazzolla. From the "Coral"
(Fugata) inspired by Bach's counterpoint
and his classical training,
through the "impressionist,"
"Valsisimo" soulful Milongas,
Songs and Tangos, he draws on
jazz elements, popular music and
classical composition technique to
create a new style, entirely his
own, later admired and imitated
by others. The most striking elements
are simple classicist structures,
containing beautiful melodic
lines, complex and rich harmonies
and typical rhythms derived
from Argentinean Folk Music.
Nearly all the works are originally
composed for a small ensemble
and various versions by
the composer as well as other artists,
playing them with different
combinations of instruments have
been recorded. Although many of
his compositions are rooted in
music, which was traditionally
danced to - much like Chopin's
Waltzes, Polonaises or Mazurkas,
Piazzolla's compositions are essentially
music to be listened to.
In Piazzolla's own words: "This is
no dance music like traditional
tango, no easy listening music".
His total identification and belief
in his music goes beyond his artistic
and musical convictions, as
is reflected in a statement made
about one his last recording; "This
is the music I can give to my
grandchildren and say, 'This is
what we did with our lives'."
