<strong>cultivar</strong>s. The pure acum<strong>in</strong>atas clearly predom<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>in</strong> number over the<br />

balbisiana clones <strong>and</strong> their hybrids. Another <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g observation is that<br />

practically all the acum<strong>in</strong>ata <strong>cultivar</strong>s are dessert bananas, with the exception<br />

of two dual purpose clones <strong>and</strong> four cook<strong>in</strong>g varieties, three of which have<br />

dist<strong>in</strong>ctive yellow bracts. On the other h<strong>and</strong>, all the pure balbisianas are cul<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

varieties. <strong>Banana</strong>s that are consumed either fresh or cooked are common<br />

among the hybrids. Some of the AAB hybrids are eaten fresh while none of the<br />

ABB <strong>cultivar</strong>s are considered dessert bananas.<br />

The great wealth of Musa germplasm <strong>in</strong> <strong>Southeast</strong> <strong>Asia</strong> <strong>in</strong>cludes some of the<br />

rarest <strong>and</strong> most unique <strong>cultivar</strong>s of banana <strong>in</strong> the world. The Pisang Kates of<br />

Indonesia bear large, solitary fruits per ‘h<strong>and</strong>’ <strong>and</strong> the ‘f<strong>in</strong>gers’ look like small<br />

papaya. Kates mean papaya. The Fe’i bananas of eastern Indonesia bears<br />

upright fruit bunches. The local name Pisang Tongkat Langit means banana that<br />

face the sky or reach<strong>in</strong>g towards heaven. On the other h<strong>and</strong>, the Pisang Seribu<br />

of Malaysia bears long <strong>and</strong> extended fruit bunches that hang <strong>and</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>uously
