February 4, 2012. An official competition of the West Virginia Music Teachers’ Association, students
performed works by Noona, Hadyn, Mozart and Mendelssohn, vying for cash prizes at the junior,
intermediate and senior levels. The Senior Level winner will perform with the Shepherd Preparatory
Orchestra on its April 25, 2012 concert at the Frank Center Theater.
There were forty‐five entries from the studios of participating teachers: Faye Bonner, Nancy Breth,
Ruth Raubertas, Carole Kriewaldt, Gary Mullenax, Jenny Anderson, Suzanne Tabb and Scott Beard.
Judges of the competition were: Dr. Yu‐Hsuan Liao (Piano professor at Shepherd University), Jeffry
Newberger (Conductor of the Shepherd Preparatory Orchestra) and Kari Edge (Assoc. Conductor of
the Shepherd Preparatory Orchestra).
Dr. Scott Beard founded the competition in 2007 to promote the study and performance of concerto
repertoire. The competition is named for two of his former teachers: Judith Siegel, NCTM (now of
students, promoting the performance of concerto and ensemble repertoire. The competition became a
WVMTA/MTNA Commissioned Composer Program
Our Composer Commissioning program supports the creative musicians living
among us, and offers a superb performance opportunity. Every WVMTA member is
urged to continue to take every opportunity to aid or encourage a composer.
Composers need talented, well‐trained, and enthusiastic performers to perform
and record their works. Promotion is virtually impossible without performance,
and few composers can afford proper venues on their own. Performers who
champion new music receive the greatest admiration and respect from their
peers. Musicians must help each other make the world a better place with more
beautiful and expertly crafted new music. Please continue to play a part in making
our musical era the most exciting in history long after we are gone.
